  • Haven't had much time this winter to get out but managed a short trip on the East fork of the bitterroot river, had a nice fire. Also learned GoPro Hero 8 batteries die very fast in freezing temps. Like once it gets to 90% battery it just drops to 0%.

    Haven't spent much time along East Fork. Seems like West Fork is where I end up most of the time. Looked nice, and especially peaceful with the winter surroundings. Appreciate you taking us along.

    Just recently came across your channel and I love it! Love the videos in this part of the country. Can't wait to get out that way one day myself.

    Fun little winter trip! Ya, those GoPro batteries die fast in the cold. 🥶 We learned that, too, while hiking and filming Sunday Gulch in the Black Hills. 😆 Thankfully, we had a couple of spare batteries to still film enough. Bring on spring! 🌺 🌼🌷🌱

    Great that you guys are getting out! Kind of a pitiful winter that we are having so far and I'm with you, if we don't get some snow or have a wet spring, we're in for a bad fire season!

      Once I get off night shift (after 1st week of march) I'll text you so we can get an early season trip going!

    Nice job getting out there in the winter! My Gopro 11 did the same thing on my little winter outing, so I think it's a feature. ;-) Just happened to have my old Sony Rx100ii along, which has been a trooper in cold weather and saved my vid that time.

      Yeah thats kind of funny that something that in their commercials are advertising winter sports can't quite handle it. Its a big problem it seems where snowboarders even have it shut off halfway down their run haha

    I used my kiddo today out on a hike in the Elkhorns. I believe theirs is an 8 as well, but it might be a 9. The battery drained so fast, and it was close to 50. I guess I'll have to pack lots of batteries.

    Nice little video, short as it was because of the battery. My Hero 7 battery never seems to last very long. I find myself always putting my iPhone in airplane mode and getting most of my video with that.

      My Sony Camcorder I use for my Spring-Fall videos batteries do excellent in freezing temps but I just don't want to put that expensive camera through the elements like I did with my first one which eventually led to its expensive demise.

    It's scary how low the snow pack is in Montana this year. Also the first wolf i ever saw was up the East Fork of the Bitterroot.

      That's pretty cool, looks like an area wolf would love. Yeah, snow pack isn't great. Hopefully it snows a bit more in February or at least we get a wet spring.

    Have you considered a longer hike the oregon desert trail? I like to watch that. "Seeking lost," a you tube guy has a has a great video hiking the ODT. Other than he gets a little negative and takes it out on the cows along the way.

      I would love to do a longer hike but don't really have the time for it. I get 3-4 weeks off a year and I don't really want to burn them all for one trail / area.

    Just curious what Elise ( sorry if spelling wrong) is always carrying in her right hand. Seen this in other of your videos.

    When it’s not winter do you need to worry much about bears up there?

    • @NorthwestWanderer
      @NorthwestWanderer  4 месяца назад

      In the Sapphire mountains there are Grizzly bears, it's not as dense pop% as say the GYE, NW Montana or Kananaskis Country but there ARE Grizzly bears. There were 2 male grizzly bears released in these mountains a year or two ago that were messing around near Stevensville Montana and another bear that was caught near Lolo and released in these mountains. Even in winter we practice bear safety because bears when they hibernate, especially in low snow years dont necessarily sleep the whole time, they will sleep maybe 2 weeks, get up and wander a bit for a week, then go back in den and sleep another 2-3 weeks.
