  • TOP 5 UGLY but FUN 1970s Cars
The 1970s saw significant changes in automobiles, emphasizing fuel efficiency and lower emissions, while also focusing on automotive styling. This era produced many memorable cars, both beautiful and unattractive. Despite their looks, some of these cars were very fun to drive. Here are the top five ugly yet fun cars from the 1970s:
    1. 1973-1975 Pontiac Grand Am (4-door): Pontiac's entry into the European touring car segment, the 2-door model had sporty styling and performance. However, the 4-door version's formal roofline made it less attractive. Despite its looks, it was fun to drive with powerful V8 engines.
    2. 1974-1976 Bricklin SV-1: Built by a small Canadian automaker, this car emphasized safety with large bumpers that ruined its modern looks. It had gull-wing doors and a fiberglass body, making it fun to drive with either an AMC or Ford V8 engine.
    3. 1968-1978 Lamborghini Espada: This 2+2 sports coupe had an unconventional design, considered unattractive compared to other Italian cars. Despite its looks, it had excellent handling and a powerful V12 engine, making it a high-performance vehicle.
    4. 1970-1978 AMC Gremlin: Known for its stubby rear hatchback design, the Gremlin was affordable and reliable. It offered spirited acceleration with its inline 6-cylinder and V8 engines, making it a fun car despite its appearance.
    5. 1973-1974 Volkswagen Thing: Originally designed for the West German Army, the Thing had a rugged and unattractive look. However, its convertible nature and durable construction made it a fun and reliable vehicle, providing an open-air driving experience similar to modern Jeep Wranglers and Ford Broncos.
These cars, though not aesthetically pleasing, offered a unique driving experience and left a lasting impact on automotive history.

The 1974 Volkswagen Thing is so hilarious, when we were young my family had it, but it was very convenient to use because it is like a Jeep.

I had a Gremlin that I absolutely loved. I wish I still owned it. Despite the years of abuse, like off-roading and even jumping a hill Dukes of Hazzard style with five people inside (which broke the transmission in half), it kept running. It was truly unstoppable.

Pontiac lemans grand am , had350- 400-455 4bbl and handling improvements that put them just a rung lower than the high $ euro sedans.and with the bigger moters they would smoke say a 450sel and with the 2.79 rear they where just as good on the highway.

Volkswagen type 181.... diffirent name of Volkswagen Thing...The Type 181 was known as the Thing in the United States, the Safari in Mexico, the Trekker in the UK, and as the Kurierwagen in West Germany. Popular for its utilitarian nature, these cars were simply designed, giving them durability and allowing them to be repaired easily. Featuring the same mechanical underpinnings as the Beetle, the civilian Type 181 would be in production until 1980, yet production years for the US market were only 1973-1974.

The 1970s was by far the best decade ever for car styling. Some of the most beautiful cars ever made were from the '70s. No four door car is going to look good. There are no exceptions that I know of. But the Grand AM looked a million times better than any four door car made in the 2000s. I love the way the Bricklin looked, but would rather have had normal doors. Starting in 1973, ALL cars would have huge bumpers. That wasn't the car manufacturers fault. That's what you get when you allow the government to meddle in things that are none of their business. The 300ZX didn't even resemble the Bricklin, and was indeed ugly. The only Lamborghini I have ever like the looks of was the original carbureted Countach. The Gremlin was one of the coolest economy cars ever made. The VW Thing dates all the way back to WWII. It was the German equivalent of the American Jeep. It was a utility vehicle, and not designed for looks. They are now highly sought after, and command some absolutely absurd prices.
