15 UGLIEST Cars of the 1970s Ever Made | WHY SO UGLIEST?

  • 70S ICONIC UGLIEST CAR| Counting American Muscle Cars?
In the realm of automotive design, the 1970s weren't exactly a golden age. Picture this: big hair, wide ties, and cars that make you wince. Let's take a stroll down memory lane and cringe at some of the ugliest rides of the era.
First up, the 1970 AMC Gremlin. This car seemed like it missed a few vital design meetings, ending up looking like a chopped-off version of a real car. Despite its questionable appearance, it was a hit on the sales charts. Maybe ugliness sells?
Then there's the 1970 Buick Riviera. Talk about a fall from grace. Its earlier iterations were sleek and sexy, but this one? Not so much. The grille looked like it was trying to escape, and the rear fenders were just plain odd. Sales took a nosedive faster than you can say "design disaster." Ford didn't escape the ugliness either. The 1970 Thunderbird decided to sport a giant beak, because why not? Seriously, Ford, what were you thinking? Porsche's 914 also makes the list. While we love Porsche, this one missed the mark with its awkward proportions and square-ish body. It's like they were aiming for dorky-chic but landed squarely in dorky territory. Saab's Sonett III didn't do much better. Its elongated front end looked like it was trying too hard to impress, and Americans just weren't buying it until the 900 came along and saved the day. Subaru's GL Coupe tried to add some style to the mix but ended up looking like it got a botched haircut. Maybe it was a shipping mishap? Who knows.
And let's not forget the Leyland P76, a big, wedge-shaped disaster from down under. It had all the charm of a rusted-out tin can, and sales reflected that. The Reliant Robin is another gem, or should I say, disaster, of automotive history. With its three wheels and goggle-eyed headlights, it was the epitome of automotive despair. Malcolm Bricklin's SV-1 tried to blend style and safety but ended up with oversized bumpers and malfunctioning gullwing doors. Oops. Even the Mustang II couldn't escape the ugliness, especially in its Ghia variant with opera windows and padded roofs. It's like they were trying to make it fancy but missed the mark by a mile. The Vanden Plas 1500 took badge engineering to new heights, trying to pass off an Austin Allegro as a luxury car. Nice try, but no cigar. The AMC Pacer, with its oversized windows and cake-frosting taillights, looked more like a goldfish bowl on wheels. And let's not even talk about its gas-guzzling ways. Datsun's 200SX tried to join the sports car club but ended up looking like an electric shaver on wheels. Rust was its only saving grace. And finally, the Leata Cabalero, a Frankenstein's monster of a car made from a Chevy Chevette and a whole lot of Bondo. It's like a train wreck you can't look away from. So there you have it, a cavalcade of automotive horrors from the 1970s. Let's just be glad that era's over, shall we?

I agree. I was way too young at the time to drive a car, but I remember cars like the AMC Pacer and the Gremlin. I like the 1975-77 Pacer, but I've always found the 1978 Pacer hideous. I also love the AMC Gremlin. I found the overall body styling attractive to look at.

The Gremlin was a good little car, not at all bad looking, very practical and did all it was designed to do. AMC was a good company building superb cars, but the top brass did make some bad decisions. I loved the several AMC cars I owned back in the day. AMC never made a "bad" car. 😮

Here's something to seriously consider ; The AMC Pacer would probably sell Great today. Another thing to understand about the Pacer is that it was ahead of its time. Almost ALL vehicles today are somewhat shaped after the Pacer with regards to to WIDE underframe wheel base and narrow upper body.

Pick any car of the 70s and it can’t hold a candle in ugliness to the hideously boring designs of today. At least you can tell the difference between makes and models of the 70s. Most all vehicles of today you have to look at the badging to tell what it is.

Really? The 1970 Riviera was unattractive, but the 1971 boat tail version was beautiful? That was one of Buick's worst botched styling abortions. It's hilarious that you (correctly, IMO) find the 1971 TBird beak to be ugly. But, honestly, it just transferred an ugly boat tail to the front and made it an ugly beak. BTW, On Porsche: It's pronounced por shuh, not porsh. On the Pacer, yes, quite unusual styling that didn't appeal to all. I, however, liked it when it came out and continue to like it for its aerodynamic shape and great interior space utilization. On all the others, I largely agree.

Boy the commentator got a lot of things wrong. This is what happens when inaccurate stories are repeated again and again. The SV-1 was quite good looking for its era. It was poorly assembled simply because it was underfinanced and attempting to use bath enclosure materials for the outer skin of the car. Something not done before or since. With more money Ford or GM might well have been able to make this car work. The workforce is often blamed, yet some of the assembly workers were actually working in the Ontario big three plants, and returned to New Brunswick in hope of having a job close to family. In other words they were experienced autoworkers who knew how to build cars. They just had a lousy company, completely underfinanced to work for.

I'm not into non American cars, so I will overlook those. The ugliest American car of the 1970s was the 1979 Foxbody Mustang. The '78 and '79 Monte Carlo wasn't pretty, but I wouldn't call it ugly either. The Bricklin, while not made in America, used a lot of American parts. While it was a flawed car, it was absolutely gorgeous and is a highly sought after collector today. The Mustang II, both versions, were beautiful. Maybe their beauty is what made the hideously ugly Foxbody Mustang so disgusting. The Gremlin and Pacer were two of the coolest cars ever. The Olds Cutlass and Buick Century Aeroback cars were not pretty, and wouldn't have been my choice for a car. But as far as being ugly, the disgusting Foxbody Mustang has them beat by a mile. Oh and while the earlier Thunderbirds were certainly not ugly, the '77-'79 Thunderbirds were probably the most beautiful cars Ford ever made.
"imf" bumpers? LB doors? You need to improve your AI. You should also probably pick some other topic besides cars, which you seem to know almost nothing about.

So unexplained it could only be the work of destructive creatures ?.I seem to recall church carparks being full of Vanden-Plas 1500s . The Robin was merely different exploiting a legal loophole that classed it as a motorcycle and side car thus cheaper to tax and insure and enabling motorcycle licence holders to drive one with out taking a car test.
