Shogun 2 is still to this day one of (if not) the best designed Total War campaign experiences. Visually, difficulty, duration, scope, it's almost perfect. Honestly the worst part of the campaign, the sieges, are still way better than the sieges from most of the more modern TW games.
Ya know from the point of view of someone whos just played it for the first time and it being my first total war game, its the most accessible strategy game for new players that I have ever played, the UI is great being so simple yet having really good mechanics in terms of settlement/town expansion, plus the battles while impossible for me to win on anything other than normal right now are really fun and cinematic for a 10 or so year old game. for a new player experience 10/10.

The general is made up. HOWEVER, Tanegashima is the island off of Kyushu where the Japanese encountered the Portuguese for the 1st time. It also led to the Shimazu being the 1st to use Firearms in battle. Historically, Shimazu Takahisa had FOUR sons who fought for him. Shogun 2 features ONLY 3 of them, omitting the youngest, Iehisa. Granted he wouldn't be born for another 2 years in Shogun 2 (1547), but IMAGINE if you had FOUR sons at the start of the game!!!
Tanagashima sounds familiar, because he has the name of the Island, Tanagashima. Which is your vassal in FotS. Also the Portuguese first landed in Tangashima when "discovering" Japan. And yeah matchlocks are called Tanagashima. They are pretty guns.
Yeah, the Tanagashima General is basically an Easter egg dropped by Creative Assembly. The Shimazu get an early visit offer of firearms and to convert to Christianity which continues the story-line. :)
I've been a huge fan of your legendary let's plays on Shogun II for years. I was wondering if you have done a legendary campaign where you took Kyoto as soon as possible and then went for the Domination victory instead of conquering multiple provinces and building up multiple armies first.
Not specifically taking it, but I did do a campaign as the Ashikaga Shogunate where realm divide triggered after 4 turns, it's one of the craziest campaigns I've done, basically a "This is Total War" on steroids, because you're at war with the entirety of Japan, and they're all only at war with you, rather than being at war with only the people you meet and them still being at war with each other. ruclips.net/video/q_y92lEhIfc/видео.html
Except not keeping your town excepted from tax for 3 extra turns perhaps… Obviously I just want the population to love me and it had nothing to do with forgetting to change it back.
So, a minor tip I'd like to point out is attacking with generals as separate stacks. The primary general gets 10xp per win, each general in their stack get 1xp. Each other assisting stack gets 3xp for that primary general per stack. Max is 4 stacks, as usual. If I have 2 generals, I like to select every unit I'm attacking with in the main force EXCEPT for the 2nd general. That effectively brings that lone general unit in as a reinforcement. They can usually catch up with your main force easily enough. It's all about those early general xp levels, imho.
Everyone saying the Shimazu was their first campaign, while mine was the Uesugi, and after losing it in 5 turns, i seriously thought of uninstalling the game. Fortunately i didn't, but i still can't win an uesugi campaign :D
End game Uesugi though..... Bow warrior monks have basically guided arrows and massacre everything. Also playing as a badass is a plus too (same with Takeda though im too noob to really play with cav as a main army ingredient.)
I was not expecting this... probably my second or third favourite clan, alongside the Otomo. Dang, I just realised I haven't played the Tokugawa... Now I don't know if I have played as the Uesugi even though they are one of my favourite clans of the Sengoku Jidai. What is wrong with me... Welp, thanks for this pleasant surprise!
Not sure if you did an Uesugi campaign yet but from my experience its ridiculously difficult on hard and very hard, have you beat the campaign using that clan?
@@syedjafry1549 what usually works for me on legendary it's to ally with ashina and Mogami. Also ally with Takeda as soon as they show up on your door, even if I have to give some military access for them to accept. Betray the yamanouchi at the first opportunity, and expand south, to etchu and hida, you can destroy the ikko-ikki using your starting monk to incite rebellion. Join the Mogami and invade sado as soon as they leave the island unprotected, you can take it with 4-5 units easily. Just don't expand south past echizen, and when the Takeda declare wars on you, defend hida as they will destroy army after army on your high walls.
I have an idea for your next challenge video. Hopefully you haven't already done this: - Whenever possible you must seek out and acquire +%bushido/chi art mastery speed - Try and acquire at least one of the final talents on each tree, and use them if possible, to build a citadel or whatever - At the end of the video series, see how much +% you end up with You should spec your Monks for their +chi, generals for +bushido, get as many Confucian academies as possible (+33% for both trees, each), build and upgrade buddhist temples for +chi, and castles for +bushido (I think that's everything). You can play as any clan, but it might be beneficial if you play as one that starts with a lot of generals. It would be interesting to see how you compose your endgame armies with everything researched!
I just got this game and my immediate thought was that it's like an extremely updated version of a Genesis game I had and loved called Nobunaga's Ambition.
Tanegashima Tomokata was a prominent Shimazu clan general who conquered the Eastern half of Kyushu. Not particularly famous in the grand scheme of things, wouldn't expect people to recognize the name. But he was very capable. Yes, you can totally peace out with your first enemy if you want, assuming you intimidate them enough to make them want peace. When I play Uesugi I usually peace out with Jinbo right away and push east instead.
I always in the beginning sige osumi and with daimyo attack the force(Ito) outside the city and they don't run way after the fight I take the city Great episode so fast 3 city 3 trad
I agree. This is the best opening strategy for Shimazu. Also, fight the siege manually to take the fort intact, (so that you can recruit immediately), the fort can be taken with fewer than 20 losses. Disband the yari samurai as soon as the siege is over, that way during the end turn, the Ito army that withdrew from initial Daimyo attack, get the crazy idea they can take the fort back and attack (so you don't have to worry about hunting them down, or having them sabotage your buildings. After easily defeating their attack, the path to Hyuga is open. Shimazu start and taking Osumi is probably the easiest start in the game.
Keep in mind that the AI can spawn their army anywhere they want in the red zone just as you can in the yellow zone at the start of the battle. I think this is why the armies don't spawn exactly where you think they should be at the start of the first battle, based on the campaign map.
This aspect of spawning variation goes hand in hand with other aspects of battle in this game. By design, the attacking player and defending player (whether AI or human) have the right to deploy sequentially. Similar to the way the attacking player has the right to choose the weather conditions (dry, rain, fog, etc,)
Kinda like that you dont see the bar for realmdivide :D. Fits legenedary difficulty and realism , when you dont really know what the enemies plot against you (or when they Strike together)

This battle is a perfect example of disorienting the player (Legendary difficulty!) The battle map is intentionally inverted/reversed from what would normally be expected based on the strategic map. Good luck, daimyos!
Turn 1: don't embed Daimyo, besiege with the main army, attack reinforcing army with Daimyo, don't auto resolve, attack settlement, don't auto resolve, attack retreated reinforcements with Daimyo leading. Do this and you got 3 battles turn 1 and Daimyo ranked up. Might even be possible to get all 3 battles led by Daimyo but you'd have to detach him to attack in the 3rd battle with the rest reinforcing.
8:25 you always start there. How often do you seige? It is one of the best parts of the game. This is the same map as the Otomo capital so the enemy will reinforce from the left.
You've got me playing Shogun II again! But Fots which I've never played before. Have you tried the fots historical battles? They're really good and I'd love to see you playing through them on Legendary!
hey Donkey has a mod which changes each clan spawn, like, Chosokabe instead of spawning with the Mid Yari Samurai, the spawn with the Bow Samurai, Shimazu spawn with Katana Samurai and vice-versa

I've had a takeda campaign where the Oda got done in by the saito and the jimbo kicking Ikko but then the honma takes their starting province. the tokugawa suvived somehow and i liberatet them from the imagawa. chaos if I've ever seen it
SHimazu has one of the most interesting legendary campaigns. I personally believe shogun 2 has THE BEST campaign map and diplomacy. Kyushu has very deliberately paced settlements. Paced so, it is hard to blitzkrieg the shoni, and on lengendary the saga and ottomo ill turn on you. On top of that the ottomo jamming christianity down the shimazu throat is tough. Once you control kyushu you have already won. Upgrade Buzen to a big castle, and you have the chokepoint. Eventually land on the chosokabe island and you win there. Then it is a slow relentless drive east/north east. The first 10 turns of a shimazu campaign are fantastic. Only comparable one is the Date, who have a similarly paced map. Ottomo campaign on legendary is also very fun, all those guns. Hojo can be fun too.
I prefer shogun. Obviously there are those that prefer 3k. Ultimately my decision is based on the, imo, bad spear mechanics in 3k it kinda makes the game a lot less enjoyable to me.
Over the past few years I have said that I prefer 3K, the campaign map is just far better than Shogun 2’s, but the more I play 3K the less I enjoy the battles, which are just top notch in Shogun 2. So basically it’s become like this. Shogun 2’s battles are phenomenal, and its campaign mechanics are okay, not great, but not shit either. 3K’s campaign mechanics are phenomenal, but its battles are a steaming pile of dung. Long story short, I’m going back on my word, and Shogun 2 is again my favourite Total War game, although 3K still isn’t that far behind.

I’m aware, but apparently they’re still not that good with it because of their lower numbers and shorter yari, plus I don’t like using mods that change gameplay unless I go all out and use an overhaul mod.

It’s possible I will in the future, but I’m not super interested. One of the best things about Shogun 2 is that I can finish a campaign in a reasonable amount of time, unlike most other TW games. If I’d use extended, I’d have to ask my great-grandchildren to finish the campaign for me because it takes so dang long. I just don’t really find that enjoyable.
I know, but I don’t like doing that, feels cheesy. I used to do it all the time in my old let’s plays but then people would claim I can only do Legendary campaigns because I use cheese, so I stopped doing that.

Did you actively not sell military access or forget you can? Good way for some money from sagara early on, as they almost always die or declare war anyway.
I stopped doing it years ago because people would comment on my earlier campaigns that the only reason I win Legendary campaigns is because I use exploits like that. So I figured I’d stop using them to prove that Legendary is not a big deal either way.

@@Bondlurkus I both agree and disagree, I do understand why people can see it as an exploit, because 9/10 times the A.I. doesn't need or use the military access at all, yet they'll pay you for it handsomely as long as you border them. On the other hand they also often see it as an invitation to war and just park an army next to an unguarded town and stab you in the back, so it's a double-edged sword in that regard, but to show people it's no big deal to me I just stopped doing it altogether.
@@MrSmartDonkeyLP Going by that reasoning many things in the game are "exploiting", like selling warhorses, and to an extent just trading, since in both examples you (the player) use the resources much more efficiently than the A.I. The only exploit I feel is when the other party receive nothing, like the millitary acces to the shogunate. That's just my opinion, but I know the total war community is a bit split on the topic. With that said, I don't care if you do it or not, I enjoy watching your campaigns anyway. I don't have a strong opinion on the matter, I was just curious to why you didn't. I also understand your choice, sounds like the easiest way to go. Thank you for answering and insight into the matter.
@@Bondlurkus Yeah, that's a good point to be honest, selling warhorses feels very similar, but for some reason no-one complains about that. Either way, as you said, can't please everyone so I just don't bother anymore.
Shogun 2 is still the best historic TW title in my opinion. But there is one way that the original Shogun TW game beats it, and that is in the balance of Yari Samurai/Ashigaru. In the original, the ashigaru are glass pea shooters, useful only against other peasants or for supporting trained samurai attacks, and the Yari Samurai are the true backbone of any army. I often wonder why the Yari Samurai were not given the spearwall formation in S2, as it makes them uneconomical and weaker than ashigaru in their spearwall stance. Rapid advance has it's uses but is fairly limited. There is almost no reason to ever use them, which is odd for a game about Samurai for whom yari would be the most common weapon.

No mention of naval battles? If they were better the game would be perfect. The only good thing in Shogun 2 naval battles are gunpowder ships.

You’re definitely right, but I always feel like it’s cheesy exp to gain, just doesn’t feel right to me. I do like min-maxing but to an extent.
This games deserves a remaster. Up the graphics, do some QoL fixes, squash the remaining bugs and I would buy it in a heartbeat.

hey Donkey has a mod which changes each clan spawn, like, Chosokabe instead of spawning with the Mid Yari Samurai, the spawn with the Bow Samurai, Shimazu spawn with Katana Samurai and vice-versa

I've had a takeda campaign where the Oda got done in by the saito and the jimbo kicking Ikko but then the honma takes their starting province. the tokugawa suvived somehow and i liberatet them from the imagawa. chaos if I've ever seen it

SHimazu has one of the most interesting legendary campaigns. I personally believe shogun 2 has THE BEST campaign map and diplomacy. Kyushu has very deliberately paced settlements. Paced so, it is hard to blitzkrieg the shoni, and on lengendary the saga and ottomo ill turn on you. On top of that the ottomo jamming christianity down the shimazu throat is tough.
Once you control kyushu you have already won. Upgrade Buzen to a big castle, and you have the chokepoint. Eventually land on the chosokabe island and you win there. Then it is a slow relentless drive east/north east.
The first 10 turns of a shimazu campaign are fantastic.
Only comparable one is the Date, who have a similarly paced map.
Ottomo campaign on legendary is also very fun, all those guns. Hojo can be fun too.

I prefer shogun. Obviously there are those that prefer 3k. Ultimately my decision is based on the, imo, bad spear mechanics in 3k it kinda makes the game a lot less enjoyable to me.
Over the past few years I have said that I prefer 3K, the campaign map is just far better than Shogun 2’s, but the more I play 3K the less I enjoy the battles, which are just top notch in Shogun 2. So basically it’s become like this. Shogun 2’s battles are phenomenal, and its campaign mechanics are okay, not great, but not shit either. 3K’s campaign mechanics are phenomenal, but its battles are a steaming pile of dung.
Long story short, I’m going back on my word, and Shogun 2 is again my favourite Total War game, although 3K still isn’t that far behind.

I’m aware, but apparently they’re still not that good with it because of their lower numbers and shorter yari, plus I don’t like using mods that change gameplay unless I go all out and use an overhaul mod.

The first siege actually shows an annoying feature of shogun 2. You fight on maps and not on procedurally generated fields as in Rome.

It’s possible I will in the future, but I’m not super interested. One of the best things about Shogun 2 is that I can finish a campaign in a reasonable amount of time, unlike most other TW games. If I’d use extended, I’d have to ask my great-grandchildren to finish the campaign for me because it takes so dang long. I just don’t really find that enjoyable.

I know, but I don’t like doing that, feels cheesy. I used to do it all the time in my old let’s plays but then people would claim I can only do Legendary campaigns because I use cheese, so I stopped doing that.

Did you actively not sell military access or forget you can? Good way for some money from sagara early on, as they almost always die or declare war anyway.
I stopped doing it years ago because people would comment on my earlier campaigns that the only reason I win Legendary campaigns is because I use exploits like that. So I figured I’d stop using them to prove that Legendary is not a big deal either way.

@@Bondlurkus I both agree and disagree, I do understand why people can see it as an exploit, because 9/10 times the A.I. doesn't need or use the military access at all, yet they'll pay you for it handsomely as long as you border them. On the other hand they also often see it as an invitation to war and just park an army next to an unguarded town and stab you in the back, so it's a double-edged sword in that regard, but to show people it's no big deal to me I just stopped doing it altogether.
@@MrSmartDonkeyLP Going by that reasoning many things in the game are "exploiting", like selling warhorses, and to an extent just trading, since in both examples you (the player) use the resources much more efficiently than the A.I. The only exploit I feel is when the other party receive nothing, like the millitary acces to the shogunate. That's just my opinion, but I know the total war community is a bit split on the topic.
With that said, I don't care if you do it or not, I enjoy watching your campaigns anyway. I don't have a strong opinion on the matter, I was just curious to why you didn't. I also understand your choice, sounds like the easiest way to go. Thank you for answering and insight into the matter.

Shogun 2 is still the best historic TW title in my opinion. But there is one way that the original Shogun TW game beats it, and that is in the balance of Yari Samurai/Ashigaru. In the original, the ashigaru are glass pea shooters, useful only against other peasants or for supporting trained samurai attacks, and the Yari Samurai are the true backbone of any army. I often wonder why the Yari Samurai were not given the spearwall formation in S2, as it makes them uneconomical and weaker than ashigaru in their spearwall stance. Rapid advance has it's uses but is fairly limited. There is almost no reason to ever use them, which is odd for a game about Samurai for whom yari would be the most common weapon.
