Hickok, check the backstrap and front strap and you'll notice that the checkering is different.

Same, I actually just bought one after holding different handguns in my local gun shop. My gun head family members alerted me what a good choice I made so I’m now watching people shoot it while I wait on paper work😅 to go pick it up

509 is definitely one of my personal favorites I have own so far. A very smooth gun with a nice grip and accurate as hell. Looking forward to own a Midsize whenever the time comes

Love the FN stuff, got the 45X with a silencer, next is this 509, I have a few of their older Browning designs, all are hi quality and wrk very well. Thanks Hickok, John.
I just got the FN 509 in ODG and FDE And I love it! It came with two 17 round mags and I purchased a 24 round mag that works great. I have just about 1,000 rounds through it and it has performed flawlessly and I love it!
The FN 509 tactical is one of my favorite shooters. Mid size should be a perfect carry option.
Before I buy any ammo or weapons I alway check your page for a full description and review .. thank you for your great job...

I just bought a black/FDE full size 509 about 2 months ago and I love it, so now I feel like I need to get this midsize one, awesome review.
i think the FN 509 is the most beautiful pistol ive ever seen it just looks good..
It would be the Browning HI-Power for me, I'm a traditionalist. I EDC the full size 509 though. One of the best out of the box pistols on the market imo

I started buying FN after watching Buzz a forty+ year instructor, he hasn't done any firearm videos lately nor does he do a lot of them. With that being said he is a FN, Beretta, Sig fan and sold me on my first FN which is now 1 of 5 with the full size 509 being 1. Good video Hick45

Just picked one of these up. I really like it. Very similar to the G19... Although, I don’t need to upgrade the FN 509.

You talked about holster fit. I have an FNX45 tactical and my 509M fits in the kydex holster for it perfectly. Good job by FN on keeping the frames similar
I purchased the FNX-40 for the same reason I love my CZ75: the DA/SA capability. Still love my GLOCKS & M&P's, but there still is life beyound the development of striker-fired pistols.

I’ve had a 509M for over a month ow and like it very much. Compares well to my PPQ M2. Almost same exact size.

Don't underestimate that grip. Tried an earlier gen glock on a hot day, it was slipping around a lot in my sweaty hand. This FN 509 didn't budge. I tried another pistol with an even more aggressive grip - can't recall what it was - but the notches were almost sharp, cutting into my hand and would likely scratch anything that rubbed against them. This 509 was just perfect. If anyone needs it for self defense or carry, the grip should be a significant consideration. You can practice all you want in an air-conditioned range, but in a real-life scenario, under stress, you don't want to be wiping your hand down to hold your aim on target.
So the grip is so good that you don’t gotta refurbish it?

Owned a Smith & Wesson SD9 & loved it for a full size defense 1st pistol.. Loss it in a pawn loan gone wrong. Bought a Taurus G2C for a budget pistol just to have something. I like the compact size over the SD9. Still haven’t shot it lol.. Never was a FN fan but I picked this FN 509 Midsize up last weekend and couldn’t stop thinking about it.. I bought it and it comes home in a few days. Love the size, fit, look, & round capacity.

Your FN509 video helped make the decision to buy one of those, and now you throw this one out there. I just got an amazing deal on a Mossberg. Been kicking around a version of the Glock 19. And now there is this one.

I Will eventually get a 509. I have a FNS 9 and it is my favorite polymer pistol. My P09 is a close second. I have been wanting an FNX as well.
It's been a year, I hope you got one. I bought one today with those sweet stimulus bux. I have a FN M4 so I knew they did quality and thought "what the hell!". Put a hundred rounds through before I left.

I noticed these are starting to get popular with local security
I got my first FN 509 for $450.00... It became my EDC after less than a month and 2000 rnds... Got 2 FN 509 Tacticals because I liked the standard 509 so much. I will be acquiring 2 of these also. ___I have dozens of very good handguns in my collection...at this time my favorites are the FNX-45s and the FN 509s.
Ordered my midsize the day it was released. Great gun. Has been replacing my g19 for carry.

You addressed the main thing i had worried about, love the G19 but its literally a few mm's too short for my hand. Hope one of my local stores has the 509 midsize in stock because it sounds like itd be a perfect fit. Either way my next purchase will be a 509.

Just ordered the FN 509 Compact FDE ..... looking forward to it.
I traded off my original 509 because of that mag release (and for a smaller reason the trigger) I had to get my thumb in the perfect position to drop the mag. Now that they’ve changed it in the midsize I may just pick one up again. It was a great firearm
They fixed that problem,I sold my full size for that reason ..

FN 509 is my favorite gun to shoot. Even over my Stacatto C2!
FNS pistols are very underrated they are superb weapons
Underrated doesn't seem accurate. The Hi-Power is maybe the most widespread semi-auto in history and it is FN.

I carry one everyday for work. Ive put well over 2000 rounds down range and have not had a problem. It has its issues but over all great gun.

Great video. I think Hickok was more accurate with his "weak hand" than he was both hands dominant side, LOL. I seriously considered the FN 509 for my carry gun. It came down to that and the HK VP9, which I ended up going with, but you can't go wrong with either one in my opinion.
HK makes retro-engineering since FN exist, buy the original... Fn's the best
Midsize is better than full size. Because you can use 15 round flush for carry and you can still use the 17rd with mag sleeve and have full size. Barrel is the same on both. So with the mid size is like having both guns.

This review sold the FN 509 mid size to me. And, I will carry it on the outside of the waistband as well. I'll start to save for It next month, and make it a Christmas gift to myself. Think I'm gonna get the G19 out of the safe, and wear that today!
Somebody may have already mentioned this (510 comments!), but the other change from the original 509 is that it used the optional (lighter?) gold recoil spring that comes with the Tactical model. I gather that some people feel that the original 509 was a bit oversprung. I can't wait until I can try one of these at the rental range! I have a FNS-40 and I love it.

Picked one up at the FN Pro Shop in Columbia last week. Good shooter. Love the trigger. I do think the Midsize name would fit a shorter barrell better. Nevertheless, great pistol.
I have noticed the Midsize mag base plates are sloped toward the back where the 17 round mags aren't. I think that the sloped baseplate makes the gun ever so slightly better for concealment.
Could you please do a video on the FN 509 midsize? Some of us drink a lot when we get home from work after a bad day.... And it's easy to get mixed up about what gun you are showing us before dinner..Lol!!

We are happy with all our FN models and they get beat up in training classes. With all the students hands they go through and rare thorough cleanings, these pistols are work horses. The only thing is the high grained 9mm rounds cycle better like the 124 grain.

Excellent video as usual and nice camera work John. Per your recommendation years ago, I still carry the FNS 9C. Awesome pistol and I know FN built the 509 and midsize for that matter around the FNS 9c. From what you've seen and shot with the full size and mid size. You think FN will make the Compact Version for 509? When it's still available and for good price. The FNS 9c is one of the most underrated guns ever and it was not marketed that much by FN. Thank you again for this nice video and the video for the FNS 9c. She has served me well over the years.
I don't know where the new "midsize" category came about. The ONLY difference between the 509 and the 509 midsize is that the midsize is 0.36" shorter. (3/8") EVERY other dimension is exactly the same. I don't get the point of this gun. It is not enough of a difference to make a whole new gun. They should have made the grip significant shorter and made the barrel 3.7" instead of 4", and called it a 509 compact.

I tried the FN 509 full sized and didn't like it but I'm going to give the mid-sized FN 509, looks like it will fit my hand better.
