Ruger is keeping up with an important market, the 'lets make a good entry level pistol to get Americans into shooting" market. Kudos for that, we need all the passionate shooters we can get.
pinkiewerewolf It's my first handgun. People don't understand. The difference between $300 and $500 is significant to more people than we apparently think. I wouldn't be in the market for a handgun at all if they started at the 19's price. I shot this and the gen4 19 and could not understand why one is $300 and the other is $500. And this is American made. I wouldn't hesitate to buy foreign but will choose American when when all is equal. But it wasn't even equal. I liked the grip on the Ruger much more and wanted a manual safety with my first handgun.
pinkiewerewolf if you buy Ruger, you will find no need to buy a Glock or other high (overpriced guns). Your only problem will be wanting to buy more Rugers.
I bought 3 of these (have 2 sons) and 6 boxes of ammo today for the price of a single popular sig/glock/ hellcat....went straight to the range and had some fun. I trust Ruger and have lots of them and they all run.
I think Ruger is the only manufacturer in the world that does not copy any other design. I love Ruger because Ruger is a rugged, reliable, affordable, extremely accurate and over all it simply works.
How is a Ruger 5" 45acp SR1911 any different than a Springfield, Colt, RIA, or Kimber 5" 45acp 1911? Is it designed different? Do they have a part that is only exclusive to the SR1911?
This pistol handles beautifully! I wasn't too sure about the grip when I got it, but once I got onto the range and ran a few magazines through it I was, am, in love.
Derek Wilson , I think its all a personal choice Derek. My experience with Ruger has always been great. I carried and used, in my profession, the same Ruger revolver for 20 years, and hunted with Ruger longarms, without so much as a missfire. To each there own. 🖒😁
Derek: I'd recommend you try one out at your LGS, you might be as surprised at it as I was today. Hickok doesn't seem to like the trigger but I did. IMHO it's better than a Gen 5 or even M&P 2.0. Feels "right" in the hand and is a 1/4" slimmer than a G19.
Derek Wilson Thanks for giving us your permission. Ruger has always manufactured a quality gun for a reasonable price. I have owned several and have never been disappointed. Ruger is the Ford, Chevy, or Dodge of the gun world. I think I will get in my Ford pickup, and go down to the range and test one of these. For $300 bucks you probably can’t go wrong.
Got a chance to shoot one over the weekend and I actually liked it. It's not replacing my G19 or M&P 2.0 but I'd definitely suggest this to the first time buyer on a budget. Amazing value and ruger is known for good customer service, all in all a good little pistol.
Mike Black I like the looks of it too tbh, it didn't feel bad in the hand either (personal opinion). It'd definitely be the gun I'd suggest if somebody was looking in the $300 range and didn't want a used firearm or have the experience to look over a used firearm so they weren't buying a brick / defective gun. I put about 50 rounds through one myself over the weekend while the owner put around 200 himself downrange and not a hiccup. So like I said great affordable gun that I would suggest to someone on a budget.
Great honest review. I purchased one recently. I dig the trigger, no hangs up, on target, easy break down, easy recoil, double taps on point. The price has gone up a bit in five years since this video. Store price is still under four bills. I find it on par with those eight-hundred-dollar jobs. IMO.
Here we are three years later. This is a wonderful review. You answered the types of questions I wanted to ask of someone who knows firearms regarding a pistol I am interested in getting. Thank you.
You have to realize that hickok has shot probably more guns than we can imagine, and I'm sure some of those guns dropped his jaw in amazement at every single aspect of them, so it's necessary that he says "a great gun for the price" because he knows better than most that if you drop enough money on a firearm you're going to get what you pay for, which at the top tier is perfection
I have the pro model of this gun which gives it steel tritium night sites from the factory, three magazines and no magazine Disconnect. I love it although I have had a couple of failures to eject only when it was new. Since then it’s been flawless. However, my Glock 43 which is a sub compact single stack 9 mm has never had a single failure. I’m actually this gun is an exact competitor of the Glock 19. Same weight same size same everything
@@chucknagy553 Agreed, I felt the same way. I’ve tried a few Glocks myself, and they feel great but the recoil is something to be desired. My Security 9 has very little recoil, and is actually manageable while I’m shooting. Think I’ll stick to Ruger. Taurus isn’t bad either.
So I finally got my security 9 the other week! My first gun purchase! I love everything about it. And another thing is the magazine has a perfect tip to remove that take down pin. Just an idea for chapter 2. The magazine is the tool. I haven't had a single malfunction. Shot 75 bullets through her 15 being hollow points. Cleaned twice. Best gun for the money anywhere right now. As Hickock makes very clear. My girlfriend doesn't like shooting very many guns but she has gone nuts over this one saying how easy and fun it is to shoot. Thanks again Hickock! And looking forward to chapter 2 still :)
Just wanted to say thank you for the information here. I just purchased this for my conceal and carry and your information helped me feel more confident on my purchase. Its perfect and now I feel like Im safe. Especially now.
250 rounds in one day, no burps, hiccups, stove pipes,or failures to feed. Guess I'm happy with my purchase, won $20 at the range from my shooting buddy.
My wife bought one of these for me recently, I took it to the range and shot 200 rounds out of it with one failure to eject. After it was cleared it kept going with no issue. My wife was shooting it as well and she loves it. Great gun great review. ALSO it was $280+tax. definitely well worth the money.
Security 9 is the first semi-auto pistol I bought (originally into revolvers). Still love it, it's still my main carry gun. Works well, reasonable weight, looks decent, and the grip is probably the most comfortable for my hands that I've ever owned. Might buy another one just in case the first one ever wears out, lol.
I've been watching Hickok45 for about a year and a half now. He roped me in with his "shooting for beginners" video, and then his videos on the Marlin Model 60 led me to my first ever gun purchase, a Model 60 of my own. I'm in the market for my first handgun (going to take a concealed carry class to get my permit) and I've been doing a lot of research on various pistols. There honestly hasn't been one gun I've researched that I wasn't able to find a video of Hickok doing a review for. Hickok is one of my favorite RUclips channels period.
teepee you sure won't be disappointed with the security 9, i strongly suggest you purchase one! Personally the only negative i found was the take down pin, never have been i big fan of them, other than that i really love this 🔫
Dammit, Ruger, just stop! Last year I bought an American Pistol, a 9E, an LC9, an LCP II, and a nice old P89. Now I gotta get a Security 9 this year. *sigh* 😀
First pistol I have ever owned and I picked up this gun. Reliable for the 200 rounds I have put through it, and it is small enough I will one day carry it for defense at home and on the go. Price was a huge selling point as well. I am one happy customer so far!
Hickok45 is probably the best place to get a non- bias review of any firearm out there, and he does have a negative opinion of a firearm or company he lets you know up front but still manages to keep an open mind an give a fair review of the product.
I actually like the design of the Ruger way more. The glock looks like a shoe box, pin point edges are not good to conceal. The Ruger looks futuristic.
After 2000+ rounds (Federal, Sellier & Bellot, Fiocchi, Speer, Aguila, Armscor, Remington, Sig Sauer) the firing pin in my Security 9 failed to retract, causing failure to feed/load. I sent it to Ruger, according to their excellent customer service. It came back repaired and runs fine so far. There is a lot about the Security 9 that I like: manual safety; magazine release; grip texture and feel/heft; slide stop (not release); take-down pin; trigger; sights; picatinny rail; recessed barrel; hammer mechanism; "shootability"; etc. I prefer my Security 9 to Sig Sauer, Glock, Smith & Wesson, Springfield Armory, and Beretta equivalents. Thank you for all your productions.
Bought a security 9 a couple months ago and its amazing. Slapped a light on the rail and it never leaves my side. Not a single thing I don't like about it
I love my carry guns! I actually love my tools too! I have a security 9 and it's great. It's accurate, dependable and fun to shoot. I don't think it knows it's a budget 9mm. It acts just like expensive pistols.
Thanks for the review! Picked one up for my truck on the farm and talk about “bang for the buck”! This is certainly it. Great little shooter but like you said the trigger reset is a bit long. My only complaint. Good Gun, Great Price! Thanks again for the review.
Just picked one up today cobalt Blue frame ...Love it... your review sealed it for me ...Thanks Hicock 45...also inflation hitting gun costs hard 4/22...Paid 400.00 for this NIB.... Well worth it!🙂❤
I like your analogy, A firearm is a tool, The Security 9 is like the Ryobi of cordless power tools, They aren’t DeWalt or Milwaukee, But they get the job done
Thank you Hickok45! I really enjoy your content! I am a big fan of yours! I bought my Security 9 on March 3rd and I really enjoy shooting this excellent firearm!
I just bought this one for personal and home protection. Glad to see this review! Strange how I didn't see your review when I was researching the gun. But now I feel a whole lot better in the purchase! Very cool! Thanks for the video!
“As I understand it is drop safe, well if it’s not someone will discover that right, somebody with a hole in there side hehehe. Uhh That’s not funny” - hickok45 😂
Ahhhh the sweet sound of lead clicking in the tin bowl and rounds being loaded into mags.... music to my ears. Keep up the great work Hickok45. Love your videos sir. God bless the United States of America 🇺🇸
I took it out shooting last week 2.56 seconds on 4 targets 12 feet out 3 feet apart side by side 2 shoots in each target. This gun is a beast. Put 200 rounds in it that day no issues at All none! It's now my new carry concealed gun. If you get a chance to pick one up do so.
I bought it, took it out to the range today and ran 200 rounds through it, I think it shoots great, sites were a little off out of the box and it did jam twice but I think it might have been the ammo I was using. I have it filled with hollow points and it's sitting by my bedside. It's the first handgun I have purchased.
Glad to see that I am not the only one who had the same issue with it hurting the joing of your trigger finger. Just purchased the sec 9 a couple days ago after watching this video already 340 rounds through no complaints at all.
Hickok..... waited a good bit, and just picked up one. Can't be happier!!! Your review was a big help.... but also, holding it in hand made the difference!!
You are my shoot before buy guy. Was looking for a medium sized 9mm, and after the quality, reliability, and just plain good looks of my SR1911 and Vaquero(which were purchased due to your reviews), I had to get the Security 9. Love this firearm, absolutely love it. Thank you Hickok45
I own several hand guns from high end 1911's to polymers, mostly 40 cals. Bought one of these on a whim, cause it felt good in the hand. It's a great pistol, especially for the price. My wife came out and shot it today at the range with me, and she's been on line looking for one(in turquoise, lol) since we got home. Definitely happy with it. Thanks for another great vid.
i just picked up a security 9. i must say after 1000 rounds it is awesome. dead on accurate, low recoil, looks great. Ruger should charge more. but this is my new carry gun. my g-19 will ride the bench. for now.
My 1st pisol. Had a stovepiping issue first time out. Thought, this is a mistake. Took apart, cleaned, etc. I've shot hollow point and fmj since. No issues at all. Could have been my grip since I was new to the game. Or, new magazines. Took it out again last weekend. Flawless. A really well balanced pistol.
I work for a security firm, and have been looking to get a cheap starting handgun so I can upgrade to armed. Looks like somebody at Ruger can read minds...
I have own my Sig P220 45 for 10 years now. It was my first gun so Sig will always be my favorite. But on new year's day I finally bought a second gun. It was the Ruger Security 9. I have to say I like that little gun. Since then I have about a Smith and Wesson 40, Hi point 380, berretta 22, and a Taurus 38 special. My sig and my ruger are still my favorite.
I've owned several p series pistols mk2 93 92 90, sold them all because of that ridiculous takedown latch inside top of mag well and those obnoxious controls. Then I watched your video and was amazed to find out they eliminated this operation and completely remodeled the new line up. Thanks hickok45 thanks ruger, now only if l can find one at my local shop.
Just picked one up the other day for concealed carry. Love the gun definitely put it to the test when I bought it went to the gun range the next day after purchase shot about 200 rounds out of it, had a few jams I’m guessing that’s due to being just bought and hasn’t been cleaned and oiled yet. But now it’s cleaned and oiled and been running good since.
M&p 9mm m2.0 is my favorite pistol that’s out and available right now. But you cannot go wrong with this security 9 or the beretta apx or glock 19 or the FN-509 or the HK VP9. There are so many good handguns out right now. I’m thankful with all the options we have available to us these days and wide range of price points also so any ones budget can work in a good pistol.
I own 1. Didnt know much about it. Just went to the gun shop and saw it sitting there for 350 and asked if I could holdher. Love at first touch! Its light, its steady, its awesome. Has not failed me yet! Cheap and good gun.
Just got one of these for $270 at a Black Friday sale. Am looking forward to taking it to the range and shooting it. Hickok45's review convinced me to purchase..FOR THE MONEY!!!

Dammit, Ruger, just stop! Last year I bought an American Pistol, a 9E, an LC9, an LCP II, and a nice old P89. Now I gotta get a Security 9 this year. *sigh* 😀
Cro Minion oh don’t forget the pc carbine!
Im in about the same boat lol
Got 2 and i want the new lc9s too smh
That's a good problem to have lol
I have both the ec9s and the security 9 because of hickok45
GREAT video and informative! Bought the Security-9 as a birthday gift to myself recently and cant wait to take it to the range!
Love it. Ruger never fails to impress me. Everything they make is quality and built to last. They proved the impossible with the sr22.
@AK47 KUSSSHH I'm not sure about that. They're still on the ruger website.
@@Thecowboy69997 no their gone discontinued apparently. only the sr22 is available
Not a single thing I don't like about it
Best intro ever!!....hickok45 you out do Youre self every Time!
I love my carry guns! I actually love my tools too! I have a security 9 and it's great. It's accurate, dependable and fun to shoot. I don't think it knows it's a budget 9mm. It acts just like expensive pistols.
7:35 you can see the bullet traveling to the target. really cool
In case he shoots at me I can dodge them!!! LOL
@@heavymetaltrucking4599 Like Chekov says in Star Trek - if he shoots at me with that old thing, I'll just step out of the way!
I love mine, very smooth and reliable. Hickok45 is the go-to channel for firearm info, thank you sir!
I just bought my Ruger Security-9 . Love it . Bought it at a pawn but cleaned it , took out to the range . Was very pleased
I bought one about 3 weeks ago it's a great gun at an affordable price. Ruger makes great products.
Thanks for the review! Picked one up for my truck on the farm and talk about “bang for the buck”! This is certainly it.
Great little shooter but like you said the trigger reset is a bit long. My only complaint. Good Gun, Great Price! Thanks again
for the review.
It's a great pistol for the money. I'm glad I bought it when it was $299.99. They sell for $369.99 now
Just picked one up today cobalt Blue frame ...Love it... your review sealed it for me ...Thanks Hicock 45...also inflation hitting gun costs hard 4/22...Paid 400.00 for this NIB.... Well worth it!🙂❤
I purchased one last year and love it. Accurate, easy smooth mag and slide release and a great price.
I'll say it,,,, "for the money" Ruger has hit a home run with this gun.
I would buy regardless of cost!😃❤
I like your analogy, A firearm is a tool, The Security 9 is like the Ryobi of cordless power tools, They aren’t DeWalt or Milwaukee, But they get the job done
I sure hope that wouldnt be true. I work in the tools dept at lowes and people ask me for ryobi batteries all the time because they went bad.
Ryobi is garbage lol
They are more like Hitachi
@JESSICA ALBERT Yeah... No. More like Black & Decker
@JESSICA ALBERT nope highpoints kinda work for more than 5 mins
I love my Security 9. Holding up extremely well.
Nick Busch my bad I’ll fix it
I thought it was funny 😜
😂😂😂😂. I thought it was hilarious!!!
I just looked at this one yesterday at the shop.... Best looking Ruger I've ever seen, the sights are great.
Ah! The good ol' days when ammo could be had like candy in tray.
I have a Ruger American 45 compact and I love that. Ruger always has made quality guns.
May I ask what ammo you used? I used Sellier and Bellot and I had about 20% of them misfire.
I bought it, took it out to the range today and ran 200 rounds through it, I think it shoots great, sites were a little off out of the box and it did jam twice but I think it might have been the ammo I was using. I have it filled with hollow points and it's sitting by my bedside. It's the first handgun I have purchased.
this gun is awesome. i have a glock 19, and loved this one. The slide is easier, trigger is slighty easier, and overall it's a great gun
If that wasnt the greatest opening to a RUclips video I dont know what is!
Hickok likes Ruger, he's a good guy IMO.
Ruger should charge more. but this is my new carry gun. my g-19 will ride the bench. for now.
Compact?
Anytime a block is on the bench is a good day.
Anytime a block is on the bench is a good day.
Ruger makes some good guns. My family has bought guns from them for years.
“R.I.P. headphone users” I loved that at the beginning. Clever lol
Love your videos Hickock and John! Keep up the good work!
Decided to get this pistol after I remembered your review on it. Absolutely love it, pretty easy on my wallet too since im in college.
I use a Bluetooth speaker and had it right by my ear, safe to say I couldn't hear a word he said after the beginning.
What?
Who puts a speaker right by their ear on a shooting video? Don't put your gun right by your ear when you fire it. Just an FYI.
Big difference between a speaker and a gun in case you didn't know the difference
He said Rest In Peace Headphone users 😂, even though your not one I think your case unique in
Itself requires a couple of R.I.P's 😂hehehe
My ears dieded
I just bought one as my first hand gun! Can't wait to try it out!
I work for a security firm, and have been looking to get a cheap starting handgun so I can upgrade to armed. Looks like somebody at Ruger can read minds...
Jonathan Pearson they already had the cheap gun for security the ruger SD9VE
@@bigpimpen045 sd9 is smith and wesson....
Your right
Mdamonette lol the Ruger ?
“Or is that security 18” hahaha love it!
Steven Ortiz iii
ken martin what?
"For the price" ima go ahead and make that my first gun purchase lol. Good review thanks.
RIP indeed... 👂☠
I have a security 9 and an EC9S and like both of the and carry them both!
Diddy! Well ssid.
Ruger is like 300 though
america ! 👍🏻 greetings from 🇩🇪
Guten taag!!
Thanks for the GSG Ak 22lr, sincerely me and America.
SuckMe and they don’t cost nearly as much fine German guns!
I love your reviews. Thank you for this one, had no idea that Ruger also had a 9mm in this set.
Honestly I don’t like listening to people talk but Hickok has my full attention always
I bought mine about a year ago as a carry pistol and not my first one but after shooting it I made it one of my favorites...a close second to my 1911.
My first semi-auto (as a poor college kid) was a Ruger... Wish they'd re-issue (and continue on with) the P-series... *Especially the P95!*
I have been shooting and carrying the Security 9 for almost a year and I have over 1300 rounds through it. It is as reliable as my Glock 19.
just picked up one of those before I watched this video and I like it I believe it's a keeper. Thanks for the good vids
