    I own Semiautomatic versions of both AK and AR, and the question that always comes up to me is how do they compare to each other, My answer is think of the AK as a broad sword and the AR as a fencing sword. One is more harder-hitting and brutal and the other is faster and more precise.

    One correction. When talking about accuracy you said the M16 has a cold hammer forged barrel. It does not. The M16, M16A1, M16A2, M16A4, and the standard issue M4 M4A1 all do not have cold hammer forged barrels. The special operations issue URGI (sometimes called the Block III M4A1) and the HK416/M27 IAR have CHF barrels.

    I personally prefer the ak 47 as it's more practical for ubran style conflicts, assuming most are within 100 yards because they are why not have the gun that does the most damage? with enough weight behind it to effectively drive a bayonet, that's also designed for harsh weather conditions, most legal ak-47 & ak 74 respectively are semi automatic the accuracy issue is basically solved especially if you run a foregrip with a good quality stock and or a bipod to lay prone. Where as the ar 15/m4 series is weaker in damage and can't take the abuse a custom ak 47 with well manufactured parts can, Ar has its uses for sure especially for 200-350m range shots and has a very fine sense of penetration and have a shit ton of customizations to make it more versatile overall. All in all great video! Definitely slapping a like and subscribe.

    shot and owned more than a few AK47's and AK74's ...russian, chinese bulgarian, romanian, polish, j with wood and polymer furniture never in combat. they functioned well, took abuse like an ugly stepchild. the M16 shot it as a "professional" back in the late 1960's in a place called Vietnam, with the marines ,up so close to the de militarized zone you could smell the sardines the NVA loved to eat. I speak just from my own experiences .it was a good shooing weapon, had very little kick, easy to load and sighted well. I had trained with the M14 which had knock/stay down capacity. got to Vietnam, given the m16 with the 3 prong flash suppressor and carry handle.took awhile to get used to the tiny cartridges of the M16. I would see lots of AK47's and SKS'S during my tour. only got to shoot them we were standing down to come home and we were told to shoot any weapons we had...either ours or there's just to burn them up and leave them in country.i liked the cartridge (m 43) AK 7.62x39) it was a nice "just the weight" for hog hunting back home when I bought my 1st one in the mid 80s.had I
    to do it allover ,I would take the M-16 ,THIS TIME WITH 30 ROUND MAGAZINES!!

    Hickok gets the general idea down, but what he means by politics with the M-16 is that Springfield Armory (not the present day one) basically blackballed anyone who wasn't internally approved by those in SArmory, because that Armory was fighting to retain sole proprietary contracting for the US Army (as they'd done throughout the history of USA). They literally intentionally bunked these rifles and lied about it's effectiveness and made worse knockoffs (and used worse powders intentionally, despite evidence about the optimal powder) to keep their hegemony in power and discredit Eugene Stoner's ingenious rifle. A lot more complicated but its basically treason beyond reason once you keep learning about it.
    Not to mention, the military effectively said 'screw you' to issuing cleaning kits so much so that infamously people back home had to send their loved ones deployed cleaning tools. Wasn't til very late in the war that these issues generally smoothed over. Just a mess of a war, especially the shady shit we did in the neighboring countries like Cambodia.

    I was in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969. I was a recon patrol leader and used the M16 and CAR15. The M16 had all the bugs out of it by the time I used it. It was dependable if you kept it clean. It was light and easy to wield in the heavy bush. You could carry a lot of ammunition for it because the ammunition was light. At one point I carried 600 rounds, and, yes, that much is heavy but doable. It lacked range. That was the only drawback. Beyond 400 meters the 223 lost its punch and in the central highlands of Vietnam, we needed a quick light rifle for close work and a rifle that could reach out across ravines and valleys to, say, 800 meters or so.

    Hey there Hickok! Doc Lawson chiming in. Back in 87-88 we deployed with 1st MarDiv to Okinawa as the MEU. Went to the live fire mortar range and one of my Marines had an accident. He had his M-16 slung while dropping the mortar round. The round hit the M-16 barrel, continued downrange hit the ground and exploded, as you might expect. Well my Marine had a contusion from the sling being pulled away from his shoulder. He was black and blue for a couple of weeks, there were no other casualties except the armorer! I do believe he is still crying. Well sir, the barrel of that M-16 took an angle of about ninety degrees give or take a few degrees, rendering the weapon “unserviceable”. That means the M-16 could not be saved! Thank you for the videos. I enjoy them immensely! Keep up the good work, sir.

    Hey Hickok ! Shot quite a bit in Switzerland close to where I live, many great shooters and gun lovers over here just like you in the US ! Both platforms are much beloved here and owned by many. Their older service rifles are high caliber and a blast to shoot, though many also love the AR too, they are made by Sig, by HK, the american-made are rarer but quite the collection piece. Sadly too many M4s here are cheap Norinco knock-offs, the real OGs are highly sought after ! I have a weak spot too for cold war oldies, high powered rifles, but love me an AR anyday and also your great .45 caliber ! Thanks for the full auto showcase as it's quite the sight and pretty rare, even in the french army firing full auto with the FAMAS was discouraged as its rof is too high so it left the barrel blue and we didn't get a lot of spares ! We relied upon the belgian-made Minimi for that, I think the US military calls it the M249, awesome weapon and very lightweight for it's punch. The M16 seems more controllable than the FAMAS, no wonder why nowadays they replaced them with 416s anyway. It is a bit of a shame, any newbie could shoot reliably at 300 meters with it, and the old hands up to 800 meters easily, lightweight and compact, never jammed on me either except firing blanks. The AKM and the OG Armalite are both legendary firearms in any case, keep it up !

    Let me start by saying that I grew up in a house full of weapons. My father was an Air Force pilot. I served with the Marines. When I was in boot camp I was issued the M16/A1. I absolutely loved that weapon. It was a lightweight and a very accurate RIFLE. I Came across the Ak47 years after I left the Marines, while I was with the "contras" in Latin America. I immediately realized that these two weapons were not even in the same category. The Soviet Union designed the Ak47 as a fully automatic fire suppression platform much as the PPSH was. The M16/A1 was a rifle with an intermediate cartridge, but it was still a rifle. And this is why you can't compare "apples & oranges." The Ak goes from safe to auto, the M16 from safe to semi. What I found is that in a jungle environment, the Ak is far better. Why? Besides reliability, the 7.62x39 doesn't tumble when it hits branches or foliage the 5.56 does. That's my experience.

      I had the A4 in 11B and 11C OSUT (went through Basic twice), which is as far as my military career went, but we put at least 100 live rounds and a ton of blanks through it per cycle in '06, and I didn't have a single jam between either of them. Those things were as reliable as the sunrise. Ditto for my home rolled rifles I have now, which are put together with a range of parts from budget to mid-tier. The M16 cartridge has a greater quantity of gun-powder and a narrower bullet, so it should have a higher muzzle velocity and better range, especially when the bullet isn't too light.
    The M16 also has lighter reciprocating parts with small travel distances, so it should also have much lighter recoil.
    The M-16 also has a barrel that is 4 inches longer, so should also have longer range and greater accuracy because of that.
    The M16 also has a muzzle brake, which should dampen both flash and muzzle recoil/barrel drift.
    The AKM/AK47 has a larger bullet with a smaller quantity of gunpowder, a shorter barrel, and larger reciprocating mass and travel, so it should have a shorter range and greater recoil.
    The AK74 has has a narrower bullet, with a smaller quantity of gunpowder, a shorter barrel, and almost the same reciprocating mass, but it has a muzzle-brake, too, so it should have negligible recoil, but a shorter range than the M16 because of the smaller gunpowder and barrel.
    I've not fired these in 40 years. It was difficult, but I could control the AK-47 on full-auto for 3 round bursts. I could control the AK74 almost indefinitely; it had very negligible recoil.
    I've never used the M4. Is it as easy to control as the M16 even with the shorter barrel?
    The AKM is crude, not well-machined, with larger clearances, so doesn't jam that easily.
    The M16 is finely machined, so can jam with just a little sand or dirt.
    I'll prefer the AKM for reliability, and, perhaps, carry the M4 in the vehicle, but only if I can keep it clean, or, else I might opt for the AK74.
    I've not used the M16 much, but the gas-impingement mechanism seems far more fragile than the AK's gas-rod, which would be very hard to break.
    Unless it's close quarter combat, where nano second delays can result in fatalities, I'd choose something that doesn't fail and requires very little maintenance.
    Both of these are iterations of the German STG44 that used a 7.92X33 bullet, and came into production towards the end of WWII. The Germans were impressed with the Russian PPSh-43's 7.62X25mm bullet that enabled it to carry 75 rounds and fire with very modest recoil, so they chose a small cartridge.
    The Russians came up with the Ppsh-43 after they'd been massacred by the Finns in forests where you couldn't maneuver a long rifle. They just copied the Finnish SMG, which was also based on the same Mauser cartridge.
    I think, the AK was successful because of its reliability and shorter barrel. The M-16's barrel wasn't too practical for most situations, and that's why you have the shorter M4.
    I, personally, prefer long barrels for hunting and smaller SMGs for vehicular and home defense.
    The Gewehr98 had a 29 or 30-inch barrel, whereas the Kar98 carbine, still had a 23/24 inch barrel, but then air power, artillery, and precision weapons came in, so, now, small arms are used at very close ranges, hence people prefer smaller ones that you can maneuver in enclosed spaces and are light enough to quickly point and aim.

    6:49 Hickok made a mistake here. The term "intermediate cartridge" refers to calibers such as 5.56x45mm (.223 Rem) and 5.45x39mm, which were made to replace their "full-length" counterparts 7.62x51 NATO (.308 Win) and 7.62x39 for use by regular foot soldiers. He mentioned the AK and SKS, which both fire the 7.62x39 cartridge. Most modern army's service rifles are chambered for intermediate calibers, whereas full-length cartridges are typically reserved for "battle rifles", DMRs, and some sniper rifles.

    AK wasn’t actually based off the STG and has basically nothing in common with it mechanically. It instead was based off the M1 Garand (actually mentioned in Kalashnikov’s notes) and has clear influence from other American and Russian rifles, most notably the Remington Model 8. The only similarity the AK has to an STG is (maybe) it’s silhouette and the two of them can kinda fill the same role. The AR rifles however have a lot in common with the STG and even takedown similarly.

      Yeah, i wouldn’t rely on video games as the best sources of knowledge and information on firearms lol. Kind of like not relying on a game like fornite to teach you how to build a house or something. As far as gta goes, you would think the 5.56 m4/AR is a stronger, more powerful cartridge and firearm bc of how the game presents them since they make the AK a weaker rifle. And that’s is the complete opposite of the truth. The 5.56 cartridge doesn’t have S*** on 7.62. Plus the AK rifle itself, is the bigger beast

    • @glidershower
      @glidershower Год назад

      In FO4, I have to use mods to adjust the rate of fire for the handmade(AKS) and M4 mods because either they fire too fast or too slow compared to their real counterparts. Sound mods for them also add a neat immersion of realism.
      But yeah, one can hear the difference, for example, in a Type56 cycling at a realistic 550 rpm vs 700 rpm. Getting the cycling rates right on any gun is just satisfying to listen to.

    • @glidershower
      @glidershower Год назад

      @@jakeh6980The 7.62 does indeed deliver more energy, but the 5.56 is better at piercing armor. Depending on the system you use them in, there's also the occasional unintended tumbling of the 7.62 bullet as it travels, making it easier for armor to resist, but devastating any unarmored targets getting hit with it.
      They're different bullets that accomplish different tasks one better than the other, leaving the choice of which is better up to the user. I'm fond of the 7.62 for my jack rifle, altho I avoid surplus soviet ammo due to its corrosiveness. But it (well, used) to be cheap to get in bulk lolz.

Despite the fact that many youtubers claim that the ar15 platform is more reliable than the AK, I find it VERY hard to believe. My rifle always jammed or had some issue or another. Yes Ar15 is more accurate, has less recoil but thats all the point I can give it. The AK is still around the world for a reason.

      completely agree. Funny how service members who have shot m4's and m16's for thousands and thousands of rounds can always recall issues with them. My m4 jammed probably 8-10 times during just a couple of ranges. They're not ideal. AK is even easier to clean as well so if it's a cleaning issue you'll have less jams as a result of ease of access regardless.

    you have to do your homework first 1947 that was the first one and no one is using it anymore the first modification after that came in 1974 were two of them , AKM -74 in standard size in 5.56 cal.which is NATO standard 223 cal.and one in short size comparable to your M4, it's called AKM 74-U. so USSR was way ahead of United States at the time because, USA had only M -16 size in 1974 and they did not have short version of it yet which came out after 1985 in M-4 size, so basically USA copied from Soviet Union AKM 74-U so they would have shorter version of M -16 too. After that, another modification of AKM came in 2012 and 2015 and both of them have Picatinny rail I and they are made out of combination, polymer and steel no wood. Then the latest modification came for the army in 2020 weighs 3 pounds most of it is polymer and specially coated steel operational in temperatures -65 and +65 centigrate and all Russian ammunition is same operational at the same temperature, and all AKM modifications come in three calibres 5.56-223 and 7.62 and 5.54. And as far as combat efficacy resistant to water and sand and excessive amounts of dust, and mud, AKM's with capability like that manufactured only in USSR, or President Russian Federation because of manufacturing and welding secret. And as far as this is the weapon for peasants, not true, the simplicity of it designed to give a soldier ability to clean it when jammed as fast as he can, in high intensity, combat situation, unlike M-16 or #4 get jammed all the time because internal parts are too close to each other and gunpowder gases buildup too fast in high intensity combat situations. And M -16 is a bitch to take apart when your life is at stake. So basically, it's only good enough for Hollywood movies. Also, in Russia, there are other modifications of AKM - 200 or 300.

  • @AFreakinProblem
    @AFreakinProblem Год назад +46

    Ergonomics on AKs are different but not worse than those of the AR. The issue most Americans have is that they go with the more traditional upright stance whereas the AK demands you to take a far more aggressive and modern forward stance. It REALLY requires you to not be afraid to practically plant your face to the receiver. Once you get that down, it’s just as controllable as an AR, in fact I would argue it’s more controllable if you happen to be someone with a smaller frame. I would also argue that the AK’s manual of arms are easier for a novice shooter than those of the AR.

    • @burnyburnoutze2nd
      @burnyburnoutze2nd Год назад +11

      I would beg to differ on the ergomonics part;
      There was a series a channel by the name of "the wound channel" had made that he since deleted from his channel (but not before it was archived) where he would take brand new and inexperienced shooters, and challenged them to load (including loading rounds into the magazine), aim and shoot both an AK and an AR without instruction. It eventually changed to various other guns, but the first few involved only those two rifles.
      Of the 3 or 4 people he tested, all figured out how to operate the AR far faster than the AK, with the AKs biggest obstacle being the stiff safety most eastern bloc produced AKs have and figuring out how to insert the magazine properly.
      The AR just has objectively better and more intuitive ergonomics than the AK does, which is why everybody is copying its ergos vs the AK.
