While some of the tactics shown in the combat scenes weren't strictly accurate, the violence *felt* authentic. I have seen movies that were more technically correct but devoid of weight and emotion. Pulled me right in. I was glued to my seat.

5:28 This use of music in the movie landed with me perfectly
From all the discussion on "you can't make an anti-war film" the one thing that stuck with me was the notion that, no matter how dull, horrific, or sad you make your war film, if you include combat, you will have failed. Put as "someone will always see it for the fireworks". I am this way, and a bit shameful about it.
While the photographers in Civil War are witnessing combat, war crimes, or their friends dying, the entire premise of the movie is they want to get "the shot", the story, or their quote. The photographers are there for the fireworks. "Say No Go" being played over summary executions is supposed to, I believe, pack that feeling into a nice little ball and throw it at your forehead as hard as it can.

Great podcast. Small consideration but an important detail - not real bullets, but blanks - People come here to learn both from an editor and how a director and his relationship with the editor work. It is a small detail but because of the nature of misunderstanding lately on sets and incidents, it important to note on the youtube timeline within the player that shooting on set with real bullets and blanks are two separate things. They used real blanks with the bullets removed.

He clearly said that they were blanks in the video... Just wondering, what do you mean "incidents" lately? Isn't it just literally the one incident with the armorer who was careless and arrogant and born into the job? The one who was angry about the effect that this would have on her career? Do you sincerely believe that this disclaimer was warranted? Was there really a risk of someone misunderstanding that portion of the video and then going out and using live ammunition in their productions?

Also not sure what Jesse Plemons was going for but if he was trying to nail your modern day combat vet he nailed it. This guy is clearly calm in this high stress situation and is very comfortable with his rifle. He wears an Army uniform with nothing on it which is understandable in a war environment given the camo, removing the black stenciling of name, rank, and service. Oddly, he chooses to wear a unit patch however, and the badge sewn onto the uniform is known as a Combat Infantryman's Badge (CIB). This award is only given to infantrymen, and special operations operators who are directly engaged in combat with the enemy. Alluding to his calm, commanding demeanor in this situation being due to it not being his first rodeo.
This scene is a super believable representation of a standoff with a combat vet for the time period. Completely non-chalant but aggressive, jaded, with just a dash of character and mental illness. Physically embodied by the sunglasses. *chef's kiss*

Poor story telling. Poor understanding of its source. Tropes mixed with its pulling from current events, while not taking risks.

Little semantic issue but they did not fire with real bullets, they fired with real propellant--powder--gas. The bullet is the projectile. Also, bullets have their own sound, a supersonic bullwhip crack. It's very unsettling and the movie could have used it but didn't, either bc they chose not to or they are ignorant of it. And since there is a scene in this movie where a literal tank cannon goes off 10 feet from our journalists wearing NO HEARING PROTECTION and their insides aren't turned to jello, I'm going to go with largely ignorance.

No colored arm bands, just multicam vs multicam? You can't tell between the two flag patches while in a gunfight. Fkn stupid. Use a gun truck to execute POW's but not to suppress and take the building? Tank on the ground but use an Apache to fly extremely low and slow (suicidal target) like shooting fish in a barrel for an RPG. This movie seemed like it had no military advisor and instead they watched multiplayer matches of BF4. The cinematography carried no weight because the story carried no weight because there was none. Also the music choice was off-putting at best. Congrats, you had everything you needed but decided to make the movie without any of it anyways. Great editing👌
