A friend of mine had one almost exactly like this in 1975. It was a very nice truck for that time period. He was early 20s then. We were talking about that truck recently. Still trucking today but has been a KW guy for a long time
Takes me back to my childhood and teenage years when we lived right beside a GMC truck dealership. Those were the days, 2 stroke Detroit music almost every day...
Cabover semis are cool & old school. You don't see many of them on the roads here in the USA anymore like you use to back in the day when the length law was different.
A series trips from Michigan to San Antonia at the end of August 1985 in an Astro with no A/C about not only put an end to my trucking career. It about killed me. After that I never put a load or a truck ahead of myself or my health. As far @s this nostalgia thing with +abovers. I’ll pass. I retired walking and being able to sit and sleep. I owe that 5o conventional Kenworth,Peterbilt and International.
@@fuzzybutkus8970 it was kinda primitive back then, that's when I started in 1984, late 70s r model Mack no a/c 2 stick triplex now like you I really appreciate my stretched out 379 with a comfy bed and good a/c !!
Nice Astro. One of the trucks I learned to drive on was a 1974 Astro. I drove the two 1985 Astros at K.O. Express and a 1978 with stoughkoff ready mix. The one thing I don't like about them is it's not easy getting in and out of the sleeper.
Yes pretty GMC if I can get with it I can make my 1978 GMC look like that. yes nice job showing and doing to that GMC , lot of working on that truck looks like nice job again have a good one see ya next time see ya bye.
O-H-I-O Porter greetings.🇺🇸 This is one clean looking cabover!🥰 You can surely see pretty well out the front with that big windshield. I’ve never seen one with both types of lights on the cab. Cool! I drove one for Cardinal Container in Columbus, Ohio. Several guys hated that truck, but I loved driving it. They treated it like a garbage can & I always cleaned them out when I drove them. That truck would still get up & roll with that 318 Detroit it had in it. I wish I had pictures of it. For a cabover, it was rather easy to get into the cab. Nice truck & it sounds good! 🥰🤩✌️
@@grumpymike4790 🇺🇸 I guess not all liked the cabovers, but there are those of us who really love them.🥰 Some we’re harder to get in/out of, but they sure gave you a nice view! 😎 Enjoy the ride! 🥰🤩✌️
My friend Lloyd Martin drove one for Dixie Steel and Dexol Plastics, they made water meter boxes out of recycled chicken coups.. They had one with a 318 and another with a 350 Detroit. Both had Fuller RoadRanger 13 speeds. Man it was loud in there and the passenger seat was solidly mounted and it would beat you to death.
@@grumpymike4790 I'm 65 now and after 45 years of oversize and heavy haul long hauling my left hip and knee don't like me anymore either .The kids these days they think these old cabby's are cool . they aught to get one and run it for a while .Then thy would know what real trucking is and how soft they have it today .Ya gotta earn the right to roll and make coal.
My neighbor back in the 70's drove truck and had a GMC exactly like this except it was a rear single axel. Just to hear him take off I would run out the door and watch him take off and listen to that Detroit scream.
That brings back memories of , even though I like Jimmy’s. While attending college in Klamath Falls , Oregon and in the late 70’s living at the North Entrance Motel across Hwy 97 at the other motel a group of log truck drivers had at least 10 of those Astro 95 cab overs as log trucks. They would start those trucks up at 3.30am and go into high idle at 1800rpm , every F--ing morning. I quit using my alarm clock. Then to make matters worse BNSF and UP main line was on the west side of the motel about 100yards west. If it wasn’t those F--ing log trucks , it was those dam trains.🤪🤪🤪🤪
Had a new one in 1978 290 Cummins 36,000 dollars. Then bought new one in 1982. I think was 60,000. Had a 300 Cummins. Good old trucks. Made some good money with them. Hauling farm machinery.
It's all fun and games until the rusty springs snap under your seat. From all the constant jounciness. Then you have to argue with a highly amused nurse. About how a seat spring is now lodged in your butt.
Never really cared for those Detroit Vs. Never reslly cared for the GMC and Chevy cabovers easy. To me they seemed if you hit your brakes stopped you woukd go face first. Took a little wile to get used to them with the drop windshiels snd lower dashes. But still wish I had one like this. So many on the road and now none. Sweet big truck though. Miss them. Woyld love to drive it but if you gave a new driver this truck they prolly wouldnt even fit in it or even know how to get in it. I would rather drive this Jimmy than the Pete in the background though.
Love the stock looks and the rims! oh boy... The exact ones i want for my 1981. Do they use 10.20s and are they still available new? (tires). Gorgeous truck. You are just missing the period correct CB antenna's! I also need some parts sources. Where did you get some items.

That is one badass GMC ASTRO!!!
A GMC Lorry. Can't Beat It.

Old aluminum front rims! Clean as the day is long 👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks, tried keeping it all original.
Down here in the south you see these trucks rotting away in fields in abandoned lots
sad but true.
