An old timer told me 40 years ago. Slam your hand in the door before you drive a 2 stroke Detroit and get fighting mad. Also if they aren’t leaking oil get worried. They are out of oil lol
Used to run a snub-nosed LN 9000. Tach her out at 2300 loaded and let her work. Running empty, tach her back to 1800 and let that 6-71 sing "Roll On Big Mama".
When I was a kid growing up in the 70s, I wanted to be a truck driver in the worst way. My dad would take me down to the truck dealerships on occasion and the salesmen would let me sit in the cabs. Quite a thrill for a 10-year-old boy. I thought those Jimmies with the wraparound console were the bomb! Very impractical in retrospect. Seeing this guy driving shows how physical the job was, and how brutal this would be on a body day after day. Times have changed.
Back in the day this single axle Astro with a 318 and a 10 speed RoadRanger was a furniture mover's Cadillac! And power steering was for girls...also, note the custom (truck stop) gear shifter!
Designer: How much visibility do you want with this? GM: Yes. 😁 By the by, that interior is phenomenal. It's this, Ford's CL9000 and Pete's Corvette dash in my Top Three
I drove a 1978 cab over Kenworth with a V6 Detroit about 20 years ago. Great memories. These old Detroit's sound really TUFF. The closest comparison is the old EMD locomotives. They sound really TUFF also.
Brings back memories of driving without a/c, and wearing a straw hat to keep the sun off. And hanging on to that big steering wheel when hitting bumps. In the winter the switcher would pull them around the yard to start them. It was a different game in the seventies.
The roughness of that ride reminds me of a guy I knew that quit trucking back in the 1970s because his back and shoulders just could not hack it anymore.
I never liked the GMC Cabover, not sure exactly why, seeing the inside of one for the first time, I instantly liked what I saw. The Operations console had a nice wrap around which gave the driver instant view of all the gauges & buttons & switches so it was easy to view & get your eyes back on the road. I didn't expect this Model to be so organized & simple like this. I very much like this truck now & watching how it moved & especially the sound still gives me trepidations as I once had as a young kid. I have only had one trip in a transport about 20 years ago, it was a conventional White or General, I cant remember but my first impression was WOW cause I was up high in it & wasn't quite expecting the movement or vibration of it. It was a day truck as I remember it but fear came over me when we went over our communities Skyway Bridge & that's a high bridge so when we went over it, the guard rails that separated the pedestrians & the edge of the bridge where simply no longer there as I looked out the passenger window., I did & wasn't happy about it cause all I saw was WATER no bridge at all. Immediate freight came over me & almost panic LOL My Stepmom was the driver :P a small 4'7 roundish woman cowboy boots & all the lady accessories a woman could have & she was a force you didn't want to deal with. Her career started in the 60's I believe when her first husband had a heart attack at the wheel & my step mom now had no choice but to move her husband over best she could & take over & her husband to the nearest hospital. TO make a long story short, this is what started her Career as a truck driver. I judged a cabover by many aspects & usually if not always by what kind of reaction I had to it & most times it was with disdain & a frown LOL and by its paint & markings plus its physical profile as it was moving & often I would get an emotional response from these types of Trucks, most of them made me have a pending doom feeling & some just outright frightened me simply because of the loud sound as it up-geared followed by a plume of thick black smoke spewing out of its pipe(s) & its movement up & down shimmy & side to side rocking action & I swear these trucks had evil personalities and souls, if it had a paint job that gave it the appearance of having angry eyebrows especially if it had a single headlight on either side of that eyebrow & the cab itself was one that had a slim profile giving the driver very little room at all for stretching, I remember these quite well because when they started moving from a dead stop, the cab always jumped up & forward & then down as it shifted gears giving it the look of charging at something or you if it where in front of you generating a horrific fear within prompting you to get the hell out of its sight fast cause that truck meant serious business & you had no time to run away kind of fear they gave me LOL Holy Smoke I am writing a story here, well I guess this truck inspired me to get it out of my system lol I loved this video, thanks for the drive & inspection & a sense of how soon is this video over LOL I would seriously hate to see you in my back window coming up hard & fast LOL I am scaring myself LMDAO
That engine brings back memories. I used a 68 cab over Kenworth with that engine and a 10sp Fuller to haul equipment around. When you had a motor grader on the back, you had to be paying attention on the hills. 😊 Sometimes they sneak upon you.😅 That engine makes you work!
I had to watch this again. Back in the early 80s I drove a 71 Diamond Reo snub nose with the 318 and a 15 speed double overdrive. It was a blast to drive, such quick acceleration . My boss always wanted me to take the R model Mack for the mileage , but I would always jump in the Reo. A couple local guys here raced and used the 318s , they were quick motors. Just listening to this makes me smile.
Hi, I'm an old guy now but back in the seventies I bought a '73 Transfer with a 318 Detroit and I took the mufflers off and put 4" chrome stacks up high. It was the loudest thing I've ever heard when under load. They blocked me from driving thru the Chesapeake bay bridge tunnel. I pulled a 42' reefer, always loaded with frozen foids. Uphill to she would scream!!
GMC never figured out the steering knuckle thing like Brockway had... even though it wasn't power steering it still turned a hell of a lot easier than everything else on the market at the time. Nice sounding and running truck! I saved this video under music!
This old girl is as old as me... either meticulously well maintained or fully restored. Looking very good. I remember newer Astros in my hometown - I had a ride in one... larger grille and ten wheels.
My first job after ARMY discharge in '92 was for a Detroit dealer in Lafayette Louisiana. I haven't worked on them in many many years. I enjoyed your video and your spirit. "POW POOF"
@AVM-Music what I like most about Maximum Overdrive is it has several cabovers in it. Cabovers bring back good o memories. I know that movie was made back in the 80s & that was back when cabovers were common in the USA. Good times. These days the most common cabovers are only fire trucks, garbage trucks, yard trucks, crane trucks, front discharge cement trucks, concrete pumper trucks, military trucks, & non semi trucks like those smaller size ones. Those kind of cabovers are cool too but it isn't the same without a large number of cabover semis around.
@AVM-Music another cool thing about them is they're easier to maneuver in than conventional cabs with their shorter wheel base & being up close to the very front instead of being further back away from the very front. Sadly the new length law in the USA eliminated the need for cabovers which caused them to phase out & replaced by more conventional cabs. In other words, the overall length limit increased which allow conventional cabs to pull longer trailers now. Back then, longer tractor "conventional cab" meant shorter trailer, & shorter tractor "cabover" meant longer trailer.
my grandad had one just like this he used to transport hay with. fun rides loud as hell, we used to hook squeaky toys to his air seat to mess with him lol
Sounds awesome. Love those old Detroit Astros. Was always afraid that those single axle cabovers bareback would front flip over if you jammed the brakes too hard. 😂😂😂 Short wheelbase beats the snot out of you.
Mannnnnnnnn!!!!! I had a 68 V8 Mack cabover with a twin stick a few years ago but I always wanted a Detroit, that was the most theraputic 20 mins ever! Love your GMC , pretty rad truck.
A true 8V71 with large injectors is 318 horse power, add a turbo it’s 350 then becomes 8V71T, add a aftercooler it’s then a 370 horsepower called a 8V71TA . And that settles that
Funny, watching along thinking that area looks really familiar then it clicked it's around Edmonds when I saw the window store sign. Bet the king co. hippies love you roaring around in that thing! LOL
Man that Detroit just sings right along it sounds badass I never really knew much about diesel but always knew about a Detroit diesel that 2 stroke has its own unique sound.
Those old Jimmy's had such a unique sound. Takes me back to the days of Rockford Files, Love Boat and Fantasy Island! I do have to say though, the cabover Pete's were GORGEOUS in those days with paint schemes that blew your mind. ❤❤
Back in the mid 1990’s I worked in a scrap yard in Fairmont WV. I lost count on how many of those GMG Astro’s and Chevy Bisons were crushed and cut up. Piles of worn out 318’s and 671s ..blowers shredded up in the aluminum pile. Sad but they were just to far gone mainly eaten up by the road salt and abuse from rookie drivers. None of the veteran drivers including myself refused to drive those backbreaking no power in the mountains Astros. 😐🙁
Nice job shifting. Up and downshifting, no clutch. You didn't over Rev it. Detroit don't always have to be overrevved even though they can take it. Brings back some great memories of the sound that started my love affair with trucks. Great job!!
Under load, they prefer to be revved. But that's not over-revving. That's where they pull best. Most are designed to top out at 2150 RPM, which is exactly like my Cummins was.
@@4321grp Sounds about right. I'm sure my 6V-71 would be exactly the same. The 8v92 T I learned on liked a little less RPM, which makes sense due to bigger size. I've been told the 53 series likes to scream a little more
Driving in Nashville right off Donaldson Pike. Just passed my dentist office. Looks like he headed to Briley Parkway.😂 Notice all the pot holes this 2billion a year Nashville brings ins and can’t fix our roads.
When I did Truck Driver school in 1984 in Posen Ill it was in a twin screw GMC Astro cabover ( don't know what year the truck was but similar to this one) and thought how am I going to drink a beer driving down the road with all this windshield. Like being in a fishbowl. Don't worry folks in almost 40 years of shifting gears I never drank in a truck.(Rolling).
Never thought I'd see Prince Harry driving a truck. Sounds of the 70s. Fantastic!!😀❤
😂
🤣😅
😂😂😂👍👍👍
He got tired being a prince so he said screw it I'm going to drive trucks.
Just getting some time out from the insuffrable wife
The Detroit sings a great tune, love that arm strong steering and a great looking cabover to boot.
The sound of old disels running is music to my ears
An old timer told me 40 years ago. Slam your hand in the door before you drive a 2 stroke Detroit and get fighting mad. Also if they aren’t leaking oil get worried. They are out of oil lol
that's what I was told by the company that gave me a beater twin stick R model mack.
Used to run a snub-nosed LN 9000. Tach her out at 2300 loaded and let her work. Running empty, tach her back to 1800 and let that 6-71 sing "Roll On Big Mama".
I get why we all wanted to be truckers in the 70s. Looks fun.
The Detroit Deisel is one of the most amazing engines of all time. Long live the DD

The deep, loud roar sound of an 8V-71 Detroit Diesel with big injectors is beautiful. Not the 6-cylinder engine, but the V-8 engine.
That thing has one hell of a tight short travel shifter.
Back in the day when the length law was different "overall length limit was shorter" in the USA, cabover semis were the king of the roads.
Yep. I remember these.
I'm getting old.
Did you also vote for Kennedy lmao
Perfect for when you feel like taking a cab over semi truck to the corner store
Definition of optimism, having a CB in a Detroit twostroker
Lmao 😂😂😂
they hear him coming
Lol
Old GMC sound good 8v71 Detroit Diesel love that sound..👍🏼

I LOVE the sound of screamin' Detroit. One of the best sounding diesel engines ever produced.
Thanks for sharing.
Only one thing better than the sound of a GM two banger…that’s one on the jake brake!
You definitely don't have to worry about arm day with this truck!!😂😂
Nothing like the roar of an old Detroit diesels, i like the low profile dashboard, kind of like a bus 👍
Good ol’ Screamin Demon! Pulled out all my Detroit specialty tools and almost shed a tear!😂

@Thetrucky69, the old EMD locomotives had 2-cycle GM engines too. Same basic engine, just bigger.
I used to drive a 1980 Astro loved that thing even though it was like driving a fish tank all glass.
It's got a great view in and out.
I fell asleep last night watching this. Something about the sound of an old 2 stroke Detroit Diesel has a calming effect on me. 😆
The standard engine for the GMC Astro. I remember them well as a kid growing up in Detroit, many of them were flat bed steel haulers.
Brings back memories of driving without a/c, and wearing a straw hat to keep the sun off. And hanging on to that big steering wheel when hitting bumps. In the winter the switcher would pull them around the yard to start them. It was a different game in the seventies.

2 stroke Diesels just hit different.

No power steering 🙋🦾 jimmy 💯
Many Astros had power steering, just depends how it was ordered.
Better know as "Armstrong Power Steering"!
I drove a '76 IH with the 8v71 318 13 speed, also the 671 IH 10 speed, mice sound to them
Marvelous sound.
That’s got to be one of the shortest trucks made.
