I am so excited to be beginning the Year of Sinnoh! Pokémon Diamond and Pearl were the games that changed everything for me - they introduced me to the rhythms, textures, and harmonies of jazz music, while also providing me with so many lovely childhood memories. They are hands down my favorite video game soundtrack of all time and Pokémon game ever, so I hope that comes across in the music!
Lately, I've been working on arranging some Sinnoh music for a larger ensemble (more on that to come soon!), but I thought for my first "just me" Year of Sinnoh video, I thought I'd keep it pretty simple and just write a tenor saxophone feature! And man, am I glad I did, I personally think this is my best saxophone playing in any video yet. Something about the combination of the awesome reed I had while recording this with the solo ideas I played just makes me so happy, and I truly feel that this video is a representation of what I can do on saxophone when I'm playing music I really really care about!
This arrangement has several unique influences! When I was arranging this, I reflected back to my Professor Rowan's Lab guitar cover (which was a solo guitar cover at the time because I was recovering from wisdom tooth removal!), and thought that the texture of guitar would really suit this simple song, and sort of tie my arrangements of those two themes together thematically. I then thought about some light palm muted bass, some subtle percussion, and I was starting to get into Vulfpeck territory! Then, in a move in sort of the opposite direction, I listened to the album "Cityscape" by Michael Brecker and Claus Ogerman once again, which is a terrific album, featuring Brecker's awesome saxophone underscored by Ogerman's terrific orchestration and string writing. I wanted to use that style (with a little less drama) for this song, so I added some strings and some other orchestral instruments in the background!
Really hope you like this arrangement, and I hope you're excited for more Sinnoh videos! I've got some good ones planned :)

I remember when I biked to gamestop to get a copy of Pokemon Platinum and paid full price, 40$, with my birthday money. I felt like I had seen another world here I started Pokemon with Platinum. I lost this childhood experience because I was afraid of Giratina and ended up with Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. I am thankful for what I got, but I always had regret for not getting Platinum. Thank you Carlos, because of your music, I remembered Platinum and I am at peace with my old self.

While I do think it's the best and most nostalgic generation, I still find gen 5's story to be superior.
While Gen 4 is the best overall generation when you add everything up, don't forget the Gen 6 anime!

I literally have tears in my eyes. This briings back waves of nostalgia of a simpler time in life when you could come home after school, open up the d.s. (because let's be honest, who actually turned it off when you could just close the screen and have the game pause?), and explore one of the best regions and stories Nintendo has ever produced. For me platinum was the first game I played back in grade 1, and some of the fondest memories of my childhood are sitting on the living room couch on rainy days looking out the window playing Pokemon and listening to this incredible well of music. This cover makes me feel like I'm right back at home in Twinleaf town like the good old days.
Jazz is not about maths, this is pure feeling and you truly have the spirit of this genre. Jazz is made for you and you're made for Jazz :)

I was having a somewhat rough day today and this just made my day soooo much better... Platinum was the game that got me into Pokémon. This tune brings me so much memories since it was the start of my journey and played after defeating Cynthia when you return to Twinleaf Town. You get that somewhat nostalgic feeling when you hear the tune again after exploring Sinnoh, toppling team Galactic, collecting gym badges, making memories, and more before coming back home. Truly an amazing version of this tune!

It's always been said that people do their best work when they're really passionate about something. Of course you've always been really passionate about music, but you clearly have just as much (if not more) passion for Generation 4 and its soundtrack. In recent years the quality and scope of your projects have definitely reached milestones----The JVGM Medley and Pollyana Live performance just to name a few---but it may be safe to say this is your most ambitious project yet. For this "Year of Sinnoh" I hope the goal not only continues to be the creation of amazing music to be proud of, but to also to document your love and passion into the very history of this channel, our lives as the fans, but most importantly, your life as the creator. I've been along this ride with you for a total of 5+ years, and it's amazing to see how far you've grown (and funny enough, how much I've grown based off the syntax and grammar of comments I've left throughout the course of your channel lol). Super excited to see your continued progress this year for The Year of Sinnoh, the Singing in the Rain Album with Adri, and any other future projects that may come! I may not be able to comment on every video, but never doubt for a moment that on the other side of the screen is someone being touched by your talent and passion for music!

What I love about this is that I would really hear this music playing as the game opens and your journey begins. The opening phrases sound so much like they would accompany panning camera shots of Sinnoh before settling in on little Twinleaf Town.

I don't know what the hell you do to make all your covers so perfectly arranged, all of the sounds combine in such a perfect way, subtle percussions, simple and sweet guitar, expressive sax, warm flutes, dope piano, everything matches so damn good! Congrats!

Thanks Bethany! I'm going to redo all of them, I think, or at least bring them up to my current standards of quality. They might not all get videos, but I plan to do as much as possible!

Carlos, I just wanna say thank you. Last year was such a rough year and when I found you, you would just make my days better. Your covers would make me have a sense of happiness and forget about whatever was stressing me or whatnot.
I was like, let's subscribe! And you have made me feel so happy and motivated to keep going and make new friends. Through the dark and through the good, you were always there. I never followed the instruments and the notes and how music worked, and then I joined your Discord. Yes, I have been busy and not been able to get on there, but the people there are just great.
This year has been a good year so far. I've been making more friends, I got my driver's permit, I'm learning how to drive now, and I'm in my third year of high school. And I wanna try to find more hobbies like playing instruments (like you!). But things are looking good. And then you announce that you were going to be doing a year of Sinnoh, I was so happy. I wanna meet you in person and just tell you everything. Obviously, I can't go to any conventions as I am only in 11th grade, and my parents don't really like me getting to invested into video games, but who knows, maybe I can make something happen.
And lastly, I'm gonna say it again. Thank you. For making me see other great video game osts like Persona 5, Undertale, Deltrune, and many others. But thank you for being the best you can ever be. And I hope we can keep going and maybe I will meet you.

Insane, I would like to personally thank you, for seeing you at the York Music Camp, a great concert man. This song has been putting me to ease lately when I think of someone. Recently, someone who my best friend was close to decided to end his life. We all had no idea, everyone is quite in shock. Listening to some of my favourite music helps me calm down. Pokemon platinum was my first game I ever played and I have been playing games my entire life it brings a smile to my face remembering that this was the first theam you hear went you step into this game (plats also my favorite game ever)

It'll probably be similar to the non-piano 209 arrangement I did a few years ago, but with updated recordings and structure. Can't wait to do 201! That one is going to be a challenge to arrange!
