This is one of the few engine designs that a fella can base an entire career on maintaining and repairing all the way from apprentice to master mechanic to retirement. They’ve been around for decades and will continue on for decades to come. I started my career in the offshore drilling industry with a triplet of 12 cylinder 645 E8’s that were manufactured in the late 1970’s. Good times learning the odd firing old 12 cylinders. Eventually I had quad 16’s in my engine room. These old EMD’s are some of the toughest, load living engines ever produced.

The 567 really paved the way for great progress from EMD. If something goes wrong, the engine shuts itself down before anything "hits the fan".
One thing is for sure, with the engine over speed trip system these babies have, you won't see a runaway happen. Heard a story once about and engine that would start rough and then shut down because one side of the overspeed sensor was out of alignment with the cams on its side.
Solution was to crank the engine over with the overspeed reset lever held in the reset position until they lined up again, she purred like a kitten.
    What a robust machine.

Rated in a locomotive at 3000 horsepower for traction.
Ran many locomotives using this engine, the extra horsepower is used by the accessories to run the engine auxiliary generator water pumps, air compressor etc.
    Every solid reliable engines.
As a locomotive fireman we got a alarm bell 10 minutes after leaving the yard headed west. Couldn't find anything wrong when I walked back through the power 4 units SD40-2's ( 6 axle locomotives) the unit I was on went to idle and the hot engine light came on in the cab, looked her over and found the control wire for the third 48 inch cooling fan had fallen out of the thermostat and after reinserting it the fan cam back to life but the spring loaded lock ring was broken. Seeing as we climbing the mountain we needed the engine so stayed inside the engine hood holding the plug in the thermostat to keep the engine online. Next trip I brought my shooting ear protectors along! That was a loud trip up the mountain.

Nice to see that engine fixed up and running. I worked for CP Rail maintaining mostly EMD locomotives for 33 years. The SD40-2 is a great locomotive. Reliable and good to work on. I will always remember them screaming at full throttle under load using the stationary load test feature. A great noise!

On a slightly different topic, we also maintained the SD90MAC fleet for CP. One of the strangest experiences in my railway career was opening the hood doors on an EMD locomotive and seeing the 4 stroke "H" engine inside. EMD has been building 2 stroke diesels since they started many years ago. Even inside the shop, you knew when they were load testing a 6000HP "H" engine. you could feel the ground shake!

Pure junk. Never had one load while in a consist. The SD/GP40s were good power, but the rest - good riddance. When we got the AC44s here on the Soo Line, they put everything else to shame. Never once had one go belly up.

Looks, and sounds, a lot like the twin 16-cylinder EMD engines that powered the offshore oil service supply vessel I worked on in the Java Sea in Indonesia in 1975, the MV Challenge, owned and operated by Offshore Logistics, on lease to Arco in the Ardjuna field off the northeast coast of Java. Challenge was one of the few boats in that field that had the power to tow wildcatting jackup rigs from one location to another in the field. One of the rigs we worked was called the Earle Rowe. Our engineer was very proud of those engines; he told me that they were otherwise used as locomotive engines. I salute the dedicated men and women of the offshore oil industry I had the honor to work with that year, and again in 1978 in the Gulf of Mexico!

That's a great story Geoffrey My hat goes off to the men and women in the offshore service. I have talked to some people in that field and can be a rough and rewarding job. I work with the inland waters and this engine can take some abuse. Thanks for your story Geoffrey and have a great day !

I worked with that guy in South Texas on a boat, and he told me he was the EMD mechanic for Mike Inc. Small world, Bobby is a bad mother fucker too I wish I could work with him more.

I worked on a 1000' long Great Lakes ore carrier that had 4 20-645-E7's. Love the EMD's they soldier on. I worked another ship with 2 Pielstick (Pig Stick) 16 cylinders and they were a hassle. Also sailed a ship with 2 Alco 16-251's which acted like standard Alcos. And a tug with a pair of 12-278a Clevelands. The museum ship I volunteer on has an old Superior Gen Set on it. Great video.

Big Rons Hobbies THE TWO MOST MEMORABLE LOAD TESTS WAS A SD-45 EMD AND A ALCO RSD-15
      ALLIGATOR!
THE EMD HAD A NEW TURBO INSTALLED AND WAS SET OUT OF THE SHOP AND HOOKED TO THE LOAD BOX, READY FOR LOADING!
I CHECKED OIL AND WATER AND THE USUAL ITEMS AND STARTED NOTCHING HER UP 1 NOTCH EVERY 10 MINUTES!
ALL WENT WELL NOTCH 1 THROUGH 7!
WHEN I NOTCHED INTO 8 SHE CAME OFF THE GEARTRAIN
AND STARTED TO SPOOL OFF OF THE TURBO ALONE!
15 SECONDS LATER I HEARD A LOUD BOOM COME FROM THE ENGINE ROOM, AND THEN STARTED BREATHING A 60 FOOT
      FLAME OUT OF THE STACK!
I THEN SHUT THE THROTTLE DOWN BUT THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RUN AND WAS GOING INTO OVERSPEED.
IT WASNT BEGINNING TO SLOW DOWN SO I KILLED THE FUEL PUMP BREAKER AND THEN SHE SLOWED AND DIED!
A HEAVY GRAY SMOKE CAME OUT OF THE EXHAUST STACK AND
      THE FILTER ROOM.
THEN WE NOTICED THAT THE GRAY PAINT ON THE AIR BOX WAS TURNING BROWN!
WE LET HER SET AND COOK
FOR A WHILE, THE WE OPENED THE AIR BOX AND SAW THERE WAS A LOT OF CARBON GOO IN THERE AND IT HAD CAUGHT ON FIRE AND APPARENTLY FED THE OVERSPEED INCIDENT.
THEN WE PULLED THE PAPER FILTERS OUT AND SAW THE AIR INLET IMPELLER WAS TORE UP.
WE ALSO FOUND MORE IMPELLER PARTS IN THE AIR FILTERS, BUT THERE WERE MORE PIECES THAT WERE UN ACCOUNTED FOR!
WE THEN LOOKED AT THE ORIGINAL TURBO AND SAW THE IMPELLER CAME APART ON IT
AND SPIT THE PIECES INTO THE FILTER BOX WHICH DESTROYED THE NEW TURBO!
AFTER THAT THE WORKSHEET FOR EMD TURBO CHANGES REQUIRED THAT THE FILTERS WERE TO BE CHANGED ALWAYS
      WHEN THE TURBO IS REPLACED!
THE ALCO LOAD TEST WAS ALSO FOR A TURBO CHANGE!
THE 9847 WAS PROBABLY THE LAST ONE TO GET A TURBO CHANGE AT ARGENTINE SHOPS!
WITHIN A YEAR THEY WERE ALL SOLD!
I STARTED THE LOAD TEST , AND NOTCHED UP AS USUAL AND SHE DID FINE, JUMPING INTO THE NEXT NOTCH AND GRABBING THE HORSE POWER!
I ALSO NOTICED THE TURBO WAS SPOOLING UP MUCH BETTER WITH LITTLE SMOKE, THAN THE PREVIOUS ALCOS!
      I STEPPED INTO NOTCH 8,
LET HER RUN FOR ABOUT THIRTY SECONDS THEN STARTED TO LOOK AT THE OIL PRESSURES AND TEMP READINGS!
I THEN HEARD THE EXHAUST STACK TALKING LIKE NO OTHER
251-16 I EVER HEARD BEFORE OR SINCE!!
I HEARD THE LOAD BOX SCREAM LIKE A BANSHEE, AND THEN I SAW THE LOAD GRIDS WERE A VERY BRIGHT PINK COLOR!
I RAN TO THE CAB AND BROUGHT HER DOWN , AND MANAGED TO GET A QUICK LOOK AT THE VOLT AND AMMETER READINGS!
FIGURING HORSE POWER I CAME UP WITH 4000 HP!!
NOT BAD FOR A 2500 HP LOCOMOTIVE!!
      AN ELECTRICIAN WAS CALLED
      TO CHECK THE EXITATION
SETTINGS AND WE FOUND THAT SOMEONE HAD JIMMIED WITH THE HORSE POWER RHEOSTATS
TO TRY AND GET HORSE POWER WITH A BAD TURBO!
      THE MOST BAD ASS LOCOMOTIVE
I EVER LOAD TESTED WAS THE SANTA FE 5855, SD 45-2 WHICH
WAS REBUILT IN 1988 WITH AN CATERPILLAR 3612 ENGINE GOOD FOR 5000 HP!
THE NGINE WAS DERATED TO 4300 HORSE POWER TO ACCOMODATE THE EMD ALTERNATOR AND TRACTION MOTORS!
THE CAT ENGINE MAKING 4300 HP MADE 15 % BETTER FUEL MILEAGE THAN A 645-20 CRANKING A MEASLY 3600
HP AT 180 GALLONS PER HOUR!
THEY DID CUT THE HORSE POWER OF THE CAT BACK TO 3900 HP TO ACCOMMODATE THE ABILITIES OF THE EMD TRACTION MOTORS AND ALTERNATOR!
IF I HAD THE SAY , I WOULD HAVE USED G-E TRACTION ALTERNATOR
AND 752 -EF MOTORS AND LEFT HER AT 4300 HP!
      KEEP THEM ROLLING BROTHERS!!
      👍👍

Big Ron.... Thank you for the posting of this video. The EMD design was and is, without doubt - Timeless. It was and is the "cleanest" and most reliable design EVER, in the history of diesel engines... and especially in it's own class of medium speed engines. As you probably know, Cat has dropped the 710G prime mover from its locomotive line-up for the US, effective this year(2017).... and has replaced it with its new politically correct "1010" 4 cycle prime mover.... which sounds and looks (from the few pictures I've seen of it) an awful lot like the Deutz prime mover used in GE's locomotives.
Fortunately, EMD is still the Largest builder of locomotives... Globally, with overseas sales Far in excess of GE... and to date, last time I checked (in May).... NONE of the railroads from Any country outside of the US (not sure about Canada, though) have placed orders for locomotives with the "new" 4 cycle "1010" engine (I'm willing to bet, that under the EMD gray paint, lurks CAT Yellow!!).... All of them are opting for the time proven reliability of the 710 Series, 2 cycle prime movers... Thank God for That, at least.
At the stated 3,207 hp.... what size injectors were being used?
I find it interesting and ironic at the same time... that in the world of Large, high output, Low speed class diesel engines... especially with outputs of 50.000 HP and above.... that they are ALL - 2 cycle !!.... especially, in Marine use. Thanks again for this great video, much appreciated.

2Stroke Diesel Power GE does not use Deutz engines. The U series through the Dash-9 used the FDL prime movers, the Evolution series uses the GEVO v12 prime mover

This engine would make more power if they insulated the exhaust manifold. The backstop screw is probably backed out all the in the governor. It should be set to about 0.96 inches. Moran Towing put external rack stops on their tugs engines probably to change it with the seasons with less fuel in winter and more fuel in the summer. Tugs can measure relative power by pushing against a dock or a bridge abutment (got in trouble with that once ) this overloads the engine and you adjust the backstop seasonally. On EMD peaking generator engine their is two positions that are adjusted seasonally.

Here's one of my favorite videos getting a pretty good rumble of a 645 on a SD40-2. The camera captures the low frequency rumble pretty well.

Hello Guys, can someone please explain the meaning of the Serial number and Model? I need to explain this to the insurance company. I have a EMD model: R20-645-E7 (meaning of R and E7? I know what is 20 & 645) and s/n: 75-k1-1103. Is 75 the manufacturing year? what is k1? Thanks in advance, I have not found any doc explaining these codes.

    • @bigronshobbies8209
      @bigronshobbies8209  7 лет назад

Hi Ricardo, the R is for right hand rotation E7 is turbo charged and application like drill rig or marine or generator and in the S/N K tells you the month EMD first built it ( A = January, B = February , and so on ) If you have a service manual it will be in the front. Hope this helps.

Skip I (H then J) for the serial number, that was never used, K would be the month of Oct, 75, the year, 1, the day, and I believe 1103 is the number of units built that year...

Looks a lot different than its 645E3 cousin in the SD40-2. Must be because it's not dropped into a boat or something ;) I find it interesting too that the 645E3 is rated at 3000 but the E7 is rated at an extra 200 ponies. Must be something to do with the turbo or something lol.

I did when I first started about 30 years ago but on the marine side they are hard to fine. Thanks to the EPA a lot of the company are repowering to the electronic 710 they are meeting the tier group, the 12cylinder electronic 710 replaces 16 645 on horse power and I have not worked on one yet.

Big Rons Hobbies well I got a question that would be better suited for the forums at Trains.com but I still want to ask you any way. Do you know how emd increased the hp of the 12-567 when they changed from the B series to the C series without changing the max rpm, bore or stroke?

    • @bigronshobbies8209
      @bigronshobbies8209  7 лет назад

I will have to do some research but in the C series the liner had bigger ports for air intake and then we go back to a different crown on the piston and injectors and though they run the same blower the drive gear is not the same and lets the blower spin faster.
