  • Now Bindings are one of my all time favorite binding brands!
    Designed here in Whistler British Columbia, by JF Pelchat himself (one of the original Wildcat team members), Now Bindings are one of our most core local brands.
    What sets Now Bindings apart, is that they utilize a unique technology called Skate Tech.
    Skate Tech is a moving fulcrum in the middle of the binding that hinges back and forth, emulating the way that skate board trucks feel. When you lean in on your heel or toe turn, your weight gets displaced to either the front two, or back two elastomer bushings. This achieves better, more precise energy transfer directly to the edges of your board, therefore resulting in better edge hold and liveliness. It also helps to minimize foot fatigue.
    The whole concept is that your binding moves with your feet, instead of your feet moving the binding.
    Its super cool to have a binding brand that was designed in Whistler, for Whistler. It makes for equipment that is indicative to handling the type of terrain we have here in BC, at North America's biggest snow resort.
    I personally use the Now Drive, and have had many iterations of the binding since they first came out. I find that they are perfect for my style of riding.
    Follow along as I give an in depth look into the various binding models Now has to offer. I go through the bulk of their line, and mention key features on the way.

    I've been riding my Condas for about 18 months, absolutely love them. Actually bought them as my first pair, as a beginner, contrary to popular wisdom that beginners should be on softer bindings. I demo-ed them, loved them, and bought them. While I definitely needed a softer board as a beginner, I feel like the stiffer binding actually made riding easier, because all my movement/energy was getting transferred, nothing was wasted (but then the more forgiving board helped me if I made mistakes). I even bought a second pair in the colour I like so that when these eventually wear out I have another set ready to go!

    Great video and information - you do excellent product reviews with a ton of knowledge and zero drama so much appreciated!
    One thing I will say though is Now does not honor their warranty...and I asked very nicely....so the only binding I would get from them is the Drive and only on sale because of that issue. The Pilots are good...but not great and not enough of a difference to pick up another pair over another brand of bindings. The Drive's though - those are excellent bindings that really do make a huge difference. Maybe in the future Now will step up their game with respect to warranty and then I will come back to the fold with their other bindings.

    Awesome video man, new subscriber to your channel after seeing you in Kevin’s video the other day. This vlog was really interesting to get an in-depth review on all the different details/features in the Now lineup. I myself also came from years on Cartels to picking up a pair of IPOs a few years back on the rec of SkateTech from one of the board shop locals at Mammoth. This summer I bought a pair of Strata’s to see what’s up with Union Bindings. Decent binding for the first two days but when I switched back to the IPOs today the lively feel of the skate tech bringing you from edge to edge is so noticeable. Feel like I should have bought a pair of Now Drive’s instead as I was looking for a slightly stiffer more responsive binding than the soft IPOs.
    Lastly, noticed you didn’t include the Now Select’s in the vlog. What style riding are those for and what features standout to you. What are they most comparable to?

    My one concern about YES. bindings is something you never even mentioned or show, being the mounting discs and the adjustability one has with mounting them on their board. Specifically, being able to adjust your stance width and toe to heel both. From what I've seen, on their website, the discs appear that you can do one, or the other, but not both. In other words, you can do toe to heel but only if you're mounted directly over the inserts without being able to do any side to side adjustment meaning nose-to-tail adjustment. Or vice versa, you can adjust your stance width but then you're stuck in that toe to heel position without being able to adjust that. My boot size is usually 10, and according to their sizing chart, I'd be on the big side of their Mediums or on the lowest of their Larges. Therefore, I suspect with a Medium I'd have more toe overhang than heel and with a Large I'd have more heel overhang than toe, not to mention they don't have adjustable heel cups to do this either. This is the biggest reason I haven't bought any, although I think I'd more than likely like the way they ride. Is this indeed the case with their mounting discs? This is also why I don't like Burton Re:Flex, unfortunately.

    • @JamesDavis-kp4ll
      @JamesDavis-kp4ll 4 года назад +1

      Also, I do want to say this was a good video, very informative, and obviously it will help to sell them, but I like how you're basically letting people know most importantly what type of riding and/or rider each model is basically best for, in addition to all the information, selling points, etc. 👍
      #GreatJob 💯

    • @AndreasSchubertSnow
      @AndreasSchubertSnow  4 года назад +1

      Yeah I ride 2 sets of boots- one in a 10, the other in a 10.5. I use the medium size binding, and I have to slightly move the disc forward to get the binding centered. My boots have about the same level of overhang in the toe as the heel, so I find everything feels symmetrical. I don't really get too fussed about exact stance widths- I tend to ride most boards at reference, because that's where they are designed to be ridden. If you are super concerned about your stance widths and ultimate customization- you should get a Burton board with the channel system. Then you can finesse it however you like.

    • @JamesDavis-kp4ll
      @JamesDavis-kp4ll 4 года назад

      @@AndreasSchubertSnow , I just like bindings that allow you to dial in your stance width and equal out your toe and heel overhang both. You definitely don't need Burton's Channel & EST bindings to do that. But then again, you're more of an all-mountain, powder, "freeride" type guy, and I'm more of a true twin, rides perfectly centered everywhere on groomers 'cause that's all there is where I live for the most part almost all the time unless it's really deep, but even then I actually still prefer more of a "powder twin" type board, but then again variety is the spice of life and it's nice/fun to ride different kinds of setups on occasion to. 👍
      So basically, what I'm saying is, is it's not as important to you to have your stance width as close to "what is ideal" & your overhangs as closely matching as possible as it is for me. Meaning, that it's really important to me, more often than not, to have almost exactly the same distance from the tip of the nose to the center of my front binding as it is from the tip of the tail to the center of my back binding, although I do sometimes slide the front foot back about a centimeter farther than the back foot is. But because I'm trying to basically get that perfectly centered and symmetrical flex and pop going both ways, bindings that don't allow for much stance width adjustment can actually make a pretty big difference.
      If I'm stuck with only being able to mount directly on top of the inserts to get my boots centered over the edges, then I have 2 cm increments to work with. And therefore, I could have, as an example, a 22" option, or 23 3/5", which is amost exactly 4 centimeters bigger, to stay centered/true twin, versus having the nose being 2 centimeters longer than the tail and then the whole feeling being off, with a nose being weaker or "soggy" as far as pop goes in comparison to the tail. That's just over 1 1/2" which gives quite a different feeling if neither stance width is just right for your knees, etc.. Now if the inserts just happen to match up with your ideal stance width, for that board, then you're in luck! But that more often than not is not the case, therefore, you're stuck with 1 3/5" stance width increments, which is "crazy".
      For you, since you do tend to ride in deeper snow, not to mention where you live, toe or heel overhang isn't going to be as noticeable or have as much of an effect on your riding. But I spend a good amount of time, actually almost all of it because of where I live on groomers, and therefore, especially on colder/firmer days, it does make a difference, especially if you're into carving as well, especially on steeper slopes where it just happens naturally without even having to be carving so deeply.
      I was thinking about what I commented up above a couple days ago after I had, and I realized the main difference really comes down to just how you ride and where you are versus how I ride and where I am. For you, it's really not as much of an issue, but for me, it is, and many, many other riders out there as well. To be honest, I think I would love Now bindings, but only if they made a "medium/large" where my boot size would just happen to fall right smack-dab in the middle of the binding, and therefore, I wouldn't have to worry about toe and heel overhang and then could get my stance width dialed in just right, but as they are, you can only have one, or the other (toe to heel overhang centering or stance width adjustment) if you don't happen to just fall right in the middle. That's a negative point for Now bindings, to me, & Burton Re:Flexes, and some other brands I could mention.
      There have been many times where I was really stoked on a binding looking at it online, pretty much everything about it, but they never show the mounting discs, most of the time. So I wind up doing some Google research and/or contacting the company directly just to see exactly what their mounting discs look like. It can make all the difference between me going ahead and actually buying them, or not.
      In a nutshell, I just want the board to feel perfectly centered, ride the same way both directions, & have just the right amount of pop off each end which requires me to be able to get the stance width dialed in just right for that board. My stance width isn't always the exact same, it depends on the stiffness of the board and how much pop it has. In general, the softer a board is, the wider my stance winds up being and the stiffer it is, the narrower. Even if I'm not riding a true twin or perfectly centered, the same principle winds up applying just for the feeling of getting that right amount of flex and pop off the ends. That's why it's so important & such a big deal to me, basically just to get it feeling as good as possible and "just right"...,
      Anyway, take it easy, have fun, keep killing it with these videos, & go crush some of that pow for me! 😉😃💪
      Sincerely, a "not jealous", true twin, hardpack groomers ridin', Midwest "stuck" for now, wanna be more of a snowboarder than he actually is/or at least gets to do dude that wouldn't mind actually getting to ride where you are even with Now bindings having more toe overhang then heel! ✊🔥😜😁😎💯

    Curious about your bootsize and size on the Drive. Im Burton Ion 10.5, so medium or large? Also, your thoughts on the Select as a freestyle binding. Where does it sit compared to the other FS from Now, yes / brigade / cpt. Fin / ? Seems like large is the way to go there cause its hanger 1.0..?

    • @AndreasSchubertSnow
      @AndreasSchubertSnow  4 года назад +1

      I use a 10.5 Burton SLX in my Medium Drives. Works just fine. But you could technically use either or. If your getting something with hanger 1.0, then yeah, I would probably get the large. The select is their extremely versatile binding. Its good for freestyle and park. Another cool thing it does, is that you can ride it with the low backs (without highbacks). Which feel super surf inspired.

      @@AndreasSchubertSnow , don't you get more toe overhang than heel with a 10.5 boot or do you just mount directly on top of/over the inserts without being able to do any side to side adjustment for your stance width? That's the one thing about Now. bindings that really bothers me and why I have never bought any yet, not being able to dial in your stance width exactly where you want it and toe to heel together at the same time.

    Looking for anyone's advice on this if they have experience with either binding.
    I currently ride some fix truce bindings, which do their part as beginner bindings and perform quite well actually, good response and pretty solid construction.
    In the near future however, I plan on investing in to a serious pair of bindings with responsiveness in mind (I'm looking for more freeride, carving, and jumps in my riding) and have set myself on two bindings so far. The Burton Malavitas and the Now Drives.
    I was wondering, from experience, which of these two bindings was more durable and which offered a smoother, more comfortable and predictable ride.
    Thanks

      Drives - just get all the various bushings and flip the straps to figure out which way you like them and it's almost a binding quiver by itself. Not for jibbing...but you didn't mention jibbing and definetly great for freeride & carving. Pretty much can't go wrong.

      Jones Mercury are a hopped up Now Pilot.....the Drive makes any board come alive but can be too much on a mid flex board...the Pilots are a safe bet if you are new to Now. If you have a stiff board then get the drives and don't look back. (I own both Pilots and Drives).

  • @wilso335

    Thanks so much for this vid Andreas! Torn between these or Burton. A friend is madly recommending Malavita's, but I've also got an eye cocked on the Drives... Riding taste similar to yours - not going near the park just want to get better at going hard downhill; I would say I was a developing intermediate skill level rider. I have a Ride Manic, so not the stiffest board for my intended purposes, but suits my current skill level.
    Would the Drives make sense on my Ride? Or should I listen to my friend and grab Malavita's, which sound like they're a wee bit softer than the Drives and might suit the board/my abilities better?
    Regardless, this is the awesome in-depth run through of the Now range I've been trawling for, thanks so much for taking the time dude!
