Tommie, you are filling a big gap in Snowboarding videos on RUclips. You're teaching the technique and the theory to progress from intermediate to advanced riding. Most instructional videos on YT are either beginner stuff or tips & tricks (no shade, love y'all) without getting deep into how the forces on the board. This is extremely useful for lots of riders. Keep it up man.
I've been riding for 10 years and these videos are still extremely helpful for me. They're helping me dial in my riding and fix some of the rougher parts of my skillset. Tommie, keep doing what you're doing. It's god's work.
@@tommiebennett id love to see more, also is there a chance you could check out the content on my channel, iveonly been up 4 days total on lost trails, would love if you could give me some pointers on what you think I need to work on most, I only have a go pro at the moment but next time we go up I'm gonna have another rider run my go pro a couple runs so I can get a better look at myself but because I've never used a gopro most of my body is shown lol. If you can't I understand. But love the content on here so far, think ill be able to improve my riding
These videos are so helpful. As a 49 year old on my second season keeping up with my 14 year old son on his 4th season is a challenge so these fundamentals videos are a real savior. I would love to see a video on how to avoid my board getting "floaty" when I'm on a flat run. Keep up the awesome work dude!
You always want to favor one of your edges slightly when you’re riding any where . If you’re on a flat run you always and I mean always pick an edge . You will most definitely be way more apt to catch a edge and crash if you’re just “flat basing “ ( my term for “floaty” ) it’s important as a novice rider to try and pick up your field of vision a bit and look down the trail more for two reasons . First , you can anticipate your line much easier . Secondly , it will make you more aware of other people around you and make you a better and much safer rider .
Yep like everyone said pick an edge. Speed is your friend. The slower you go the easier it is to catch an edge in my opinion. It takes time to get comfortable carving at high speeds but keep it up. It’s well worth the effort :)
@Sean Cusson: great to see a fellow dad taking the beating in support of the next generation. Just wanted to compliment you on picking up any difficult sport over age 40. We aren’t spring chickens but I picked it up at 30 and am now 40 shredding with the kids, because of videos like this. Tommie, thank you on behalf of the dads!
I’m 50. Been snowboarding 25 years. I’m in excellent shape for my age, but it’s super important that I focus on form and keeping things smooth as ever. I have a season pass to 2 mountains in the PNW, stoked as ever. New deck for this year. Thx for taking the time to teach dude, you’re a rare breed. Just the way you put ideas together for anyone to understand, many will get a lot out of these vids.
44 years old here and was just hitting some kickers on the mountain yesterday with 19 year old snowboarders, who says old guys can't hang, keep shredding my old bros!
Dude, Ive never seen anyone with more enthusiasm in helping fellow shredders....Ive been snowboarding 35 years, and just learned a SHIT TON!!!!! Keep up the friggin awesome work!!! To me, youve just made the BAMF'er list. Much love and respect brother.
The turn with your knees technique has been the single most thing that’s helped improve my riding. I started by constantly falling every time I went snowboarding. Thank you so much.
Hey Tommie I stopped snowboarding for like 6 years (family, kids, etc) but now I was able to go back and thanks to your videos I have fixed some of my postures and be able to ride much more easier. Thank you man! I really enjoy watching your videos!!
Tommie, I have to admit that your videos are revolutionary. Without watching your content I don’t know if I would have been able to advance from a beginner to intermediate-advanced rider. Thank you!
I watched this yesterday and I’m back to report. I have honestly never learned so much from a singular video and the spider/opening door analogy helped tremendously! I stopped falling often and everything felt smoother! Thank you and keep shredding!!!
bro I went snowboarding for the first time and had a fun time. I was probably slightly above average for a complete beginner. I looked up tips and found your channel. I studies several videos specifically ones about carving. Without any practice I came back to the mountain. On my first run I was able to shred down the mountain. This was possible just from looking at your movements and helpful tips. I swear visualizing good technique made the world of a difference. Thank you! Keep it up.
Dude this is what I was looking for! I'm heading out on a trip soon and I've only been boarding once recently and it was a train-wreck. Been watching a ton of videos and I'm hopeful at being able to make it down the mountain this time!
I tried for 2 seasons to learn how to snowboard and I watched a few of your videos including this one and you explained everything so well, it really clicked and I have been progressing rapidly taking on all the blues at my local hill and some of the blacks... IN CONTROL. Thanks! I can now go out for a fun day instead of being stuck on the bunny hill being frustrated
Super informative video! I’ve been snowboarding for over 20 years and it’s nice to see someone break it down. You’re killing me with that “petting the dog” back hand though! You have the skill and balance to keep your your hand down, but it keeps edging its way up like a rudder. That’s something that was drilled into me by coaches when I was a kid and so it’s something I always pay attention to with others.
For myself: MM talks about gripped turns where you should weight the front foot during the edge change, and move to back foot throughout the turn. TB helped me realize that this is so that the back foot can naturally "skid out", and shifting the weight back tghrough the turn is to make the front edge come back in line to a carve right before the next edge change
Tommie! This video was exactly what I needed to get back out on the slopes after 11 yrs (broke my arm haha and swore off it) as you say, you won't learn unless you're out snowboarding! Squashing the bug n opening the door are the two tips I needed for it to click & and actually start controlling my speed on my toes as well as the transition to heels. This video alone was better than any lesson I had in person! You rock! New sub
I just recently started learning how to snowboard. Yesterday would be my 3rd day. I do have a slight skateboarding background however without your videos I do not think I would have excelled so fast. I want to thank you for the hard work putting these videos out. I plan on copying and pasting this message to all the RUclips videos that helped me so don't be alarmed if you see this on multiple of your videos.
Dude…. THANK YOU!!! My first day on a board yesterday in over 15 years was a total beating just trying to figure this out. I’m gonna give this a shot and I already know that it’s gonna help a ton. Much appreciated!
Your videos are awesome, man. Going to try a run for the first time in 20 years next weekend and I’m glad I found your channel. It was a nightmare at 14 and I never went again. Having your tips in my head makes me feel more confident in making myself look like a fool while having fun.
Been boarding for a week here in UT, have just tried out the bug and door analogy, amazing is all I can say, I can turn much better. Thanks for the video! 😉 Keep up the good work!
This video helped me become 100x better lol I went 2 weeks ago And I was having difficulty trying to carve and make turns after I watched this video and understood how the knee functions I was going down the hill without falling. Love these videos! Thank you!
This is super helpful. I am in my 40s and I went snowboarding today for the first time since 2007. I was wondering why some of my turns felt so difficult and this really answered my questions. Super helpful.
This guy knows his stuff. Listen to how he describes the turning. Absolutely perfect description on how to turn. I've tried to teach people and I've had some success but this guy explains it perfectly. Happy trails
11:17pm on christmas night and you just solved my fucking problem. I can't believe i didn't realize it, I'm not evenly distributing the weight on the board. I'm super new and coming from a long history of longboarding, and I arrogantly went into my first day of snowboarding. I came out with bruised hip flexors and tail bone, and sore as shit forearms. Whole new respect for snowboarders, not just for mastering something that looks so simple that's actually incredibly difficult, but also being so willing to help others.
Keep it going Tommie , this tips are been helping me to get better every time . Any video for off season work out so we can keep it going for the next season?
OMG I love your videos so much! They help me a lot and they are so much fun to watch. I realized I wasn’t putting my weight on my front foot but more on my back foot, so I have been working on it, and I laugh because I tell my self “come on Lorena, squish that bug... squish that bug!” Haha Learning in your 40’s is not easy, but I am doing my best so I can keep up with my skiers husband and child. (I tried and didn’t like skiing) This is my second season snowboarding and finally feel like I am enjoying it more and more. Another aha moment was the steering with my knee, once it clicked, it was night and day for me. Thanks Tommie!

Thank you so much for this. The bug squish and door open are honestly game changers for me. I'm not so scared of keeping on falling hard anymore. Going to Italy in a few weeks. Can't wait.
This is my 20th season riding and I'm a pretty damn good boarder, but I just learned something from you Tommie. I'm going to have to work on not facing forward so much! Good video man.
I learned snowboarding on my own at the age of 13 without any assistance, teaching or internet to check stuff out... and it was obvious for me not to do these things... i wonder what people are thinking to do these things to "look cool" or what ever... You start using stuff like low posture or "swinging around a pivot to change your edge without turning" when you're more advanced with the board when situation NEEDS it.... not just to look cool or what ever :D It's good and important that someone out there is teaching kids properly, good video!
All the mistakes you demonstrated at the beginning I am doing and wondered why it's not working. Thanks for showing the proper techniques. Will be practicing these when I hit the slopes this weekend.
Sweet, I've been stuck in intermediate. even though I can do some blacks I've been using open/close shoulders to anticipate letting board follow. It burns a lot of energy. I will work need to work on knee turning, it looks very efficient and relaxed.
Daaaaaamnnn I don't usually comment RUclips video but this video is a real deal. Thank you so much for the knee tips for my turn. Still catching edge once on my toes but I can finally link my turns now. You're the real deal, thank you sooooooo much. I can finally go forward in my learning as speed gain (still afraid to 😬) Champ!
My goodness I kid you not . 11:09 after to tried front knee steering wooow way less tiring and less back leg steering. It really helps and I can turn easily! I was skeptical first but just try my 1st whole Whistler run with that and can't believe I did it without all heel side 🤣
The thumbnail picture portraies me 💯 I think the open shoulder position is also caused by natural fear of speeding - at least that’s what did it for me - and then it only leads to faster falling over the smallest bump…improving gestures is such a journey
As someone who has been learning this season your channel has been invaluable. Just starting to be able to go down the easy trails but struggling with my toe edge. Going to be practicing all of these tips this coming week and I'm really stoked. Thanks man.
This is awesome! I got on the board after 25+ years this weekend... had a total blast (I'm way out of shape though.. lol). While I was riding I thought to myself how back then we taught ourselves how to ride. There were very few instructors around. I'm looking forward to getting back out there with these tips! Maybe with some conditioning and more efficient technique I won't be so out of breath at the end of a run. Thanks!
Tommie, these videos are outstanding. I'm getting over a huge knee injury (not from snowboarding) and watching these is keeping me motivated and ready to get back on the snow when I'm healed up. I'll almost certainly be a better rider even with the downtime because of them. Thanks, mate!
This is super interesting - I've heard the theory that left foot forward is "regular" because most people are right-footed and having the right foot in the rear makes turning easier. But your tips are related to the front foot ... Gonna try this when I get up on the hill next Saturday!
Tommie, THANK YOU SO MUCH for Ll of these amazing videos. 🙏🙏🙏 They have helped me become a better rider!! My carving has definitely improved because of your tips. Keep on being awesome!!!
Nice demos & explanations in your video! Nicely exaggerated to show the effects. Whether skiing or riding, friends/acquaintances don't want to change. And they know that I'm an experienced instructor! We need a campaign sticker, "Friends don't let friends tailswish"!
amazing video!! really helpful stuff for my next run in two weeks. I couldnt help but howl laughing at 9:05 when I see a stack in the wild. I love the snow :)
If Tom Holland's Spiderman did Snowboarding tips RUclips. This is what it would look like. Good content. Will practice this tomorrow. I do think snow conditions play a part in breaking form. Just natural fear/fall avoidance. Anyway Subscribed!

If Tom Holland's Spiderman did Snowboarding tips RUclips. This is what it would look like. Good content. Will practice this tomorrow. I do think snow conditions play a part in breaking form. Just natural fear/fall avoidance. Anyway Subscribed!
Anyone see that fall in the background at 9:07
