    I recently purchased the Hi-Torque 3990 mini mill from LMS. After tramming the mill, which took an enormous amount of shimming, and adjusting the table gibbs, I have found it to be a very powerful and precise machine. Very much worth the investment. Wish I had gotten DRO’s with it, however. Maybe later.

    I just purchased a Seig x2 from HarborF. Degreased, oiled with motor oil 10w-30 SAE . Noticed my X-axis Table was slightly moving in Y-"back an forth" when moving left to right. Like slop or play in it. When I engaged Y-axis lock lever (under the table near X-hand wheel it stopped. So I adjusted the 2 gib screws on the Y-axis near locking lever. After playing with it for over half an hour, I got it very smooth with same amount of BackLash as yours "3 to 4 Thousand." Tip to viewers...take your time, don't get frustrated, walk away an come back later to tinker with it. Grab your X-table with both hands also and attempt to move forward/back "Y directions." Play with gibs until "No Slop, Table moves freely, shouldn't have to lock Y to use X slide.

      Sounds like you have yours all adjusted. I usually lock the opposite feed as a matter of old habit. I agree with you though.

      I'm am a bit up in the air on the mini concept but I have been looking at small metal lathes. I use my wood lathes a lot. My career as a woodworker builder left me with a shop full of wood tools but when it comes to metal I have a 3 foot metal brake and a couple welders I've seen a couple of nice old school craftsman metal lathes and then some huge engine lathes that were practically being given away I may look at a grizzly combo machine.

    Excellent presentation, Jose! I'll bet you have been a machinist nearly your whole life! You even use the correct terminology and articulate your ideas very well. Just subscribed. Thanks!

    This is in the US, is it? I tried to order one but the import charges are higher than the cost of the machine.

    but it has the spring suspension and plastic gears?

    Is this machine difficult to "tram" in? Assuming it sits on a fairly level table, will it be hard to indicate the machine in properly?

    I just bought the same model mill ,you mentioned the older ones used to be equipped with air piston system ,now they have upgraded it to torsion spring, well mine does come with a torsion spring and I am replacing it with the an air shock,I don't think the torsion system was a great upgrade, do you still have the same opinion about the air spring vs torsion spring?

    • @JTOOLMAN
      @JTOOLMAN  7 лет назад

      They used to come with the torsion spring. When to the air piston and now back to the spring. I am not sure this is a significant upgrade. They must know something we don't know. I prefer the model I currently have.

    Exactly the same as all the minimills made by SIEG for all suppliers of minimills world wide.. The screws wear out very fast and they do not like to run loaded for extended periods the motor will cutout when it gets hot. All the screws are metric so that is why the calibration to inch is a bit off. I have the Chester version of this lathe and the gas strut system is much better than the spring version. All in all you get what you pay for.

    • @JTOOLMAN
      @JTOOLMAN  8 лет назад

      +Gary C I agree! Their newer version went back to the gas cylinder again.

      +GnosisMan50 Well I get their tools due to the fact that I produce instructional DVD content for littlemachineshop.com and I have to represent! Besides all of the Steam engines I make are in Brass and Aluminum. No real need for steel.

    Thanks for the video! I just ordered the hi torque base from LMS to get more travel in the y axis , as I currently have the 4" y axis X2 mill. Getting the bigger Y movement will make me need a bigger Y axis Screw . How long does the Y Screw Measure on the 3960 HT Minimill ? Thanks again!

      That would help me so much, Thank you! I have a job coming up that requires me to machine 4.25" OD stock and my current, smaller X2 table only gives 4". The HT Base of 5" will be exactly what I need! I just need to know what length screw to order to get everything up and running

    • @mpix00
      @mpix00 8 лет назад

      +Jose Rodriguez .. Hi Jose. did you measure the ball screw length? Could you let me know when you get a chance? Much appreciated!

    • @cheo1949
      @cheo1949 8 лет назад

      +mpix00 The Y s few is about 7" in length. Total X/Y travel is 11.8" x5.1".

    • @mpix00
      @mpix00 8 лет назад

      +Jose Rodriguez .. Thanks Nice. interesting enough, my CNC fusion kit #2 y axis ball screw measures the same on my smaller x2 mill. hopefully this will be enough for the larger SX2 table.

    I don't see this mill on their site

    • @JTOOLMAN
      @JTOOLMAN  9 лет назад

      +Fierceflyer55 I just noticed the same thing. It appears that they replaced it with the 3990 which has the "Air Spring" counterweight system to control the weight of the head stock as you move up and down on the Z axis.I believe that is the only change they made.I stated that it was not as good but apparently it's been improved upon so they've gone back to that design.These mills have really improved during their recent evolution. The one you DO NOT want is the one with the tilting column that may still be sold by some companies. It might seem like an advantage but you would have to re tram the mill after every column adjustment. I am going to be ordering the Micro Mill pretty soon and will do a review and video on it.Joe

    I wonder why machinists work in decimals but use the imperial measurement system. Why not just use metric? So much easier saying 1mm or 1um.

    • @JTOOLMAN
      @JTOOLMAN  8 лет назад +3

      +ee8 dds17 I agree but until the USA completely goes metric, we will still be going back and forth. I like Decimals myself and just have not wrapped my head around metric yet. When I worked in a US Gov Bio Lab, we used Metric and Celcious.

    • @johnshaunfield636
      @johnshaunfield636 7 лет назад +11

      Because the imperial is a much better system. The Metric is for people that don't understand fractions. Why is it better? both World wars were won by the Imperial system. Plus 0.001 is a much better measurement than .254mm.Actually it doesn't matter both systems give the same results, its just which one do you prefer.

    • @petercoverdale5003
      @petercoverdale5003 7 лет назад

      because everyone else in the entire world thinks your wrong! You could also use an abacus if you want, but the rest of us prefer calculators because they are simpler and less mistakes are made. Its a brave new world this future we see coming. So how long is a cubit again??????

    • @basiclolcoaching4580
      @basiclolcoaching4580 7 лет назад +1

      The imperial system is actually defined in terms of the metric system. The imperial system as a whole is just an odd conversion of metric.

    • @alanhardman2447
      @alanhardman2447 7 лет назад +1

      BasicLoLCoaching - It's the other way around, actually. The "naturally-derived" meter was discovered some decades ago as being erroneously calculated. About the same time, the English (or Imperial?) inch was standardized as a function of a specified portion of the wavelength of the emission of a radioactive isotope. And the ISO meter is also defined the same way now. Where does anyone get the idea that the "metric" system is any easier than any other? A UNIT IS A UNIT!!! Humans have used a base-ten ( or decimal) system, regardless of the units used, since before recorded history because, what!?, Oh! We (most of us, anyway) have ten counters, or fingers. All makes sense, until you throw in the one factor that screws it all up - time!!! A base-sixty? Or is it base-12 or -24 system? Metrics, schmetrics. Someone just wanted to sell America's auto mechanics another whole box full of tools, that's all.
