Cutting A Classic Car In Half To Fix The Rust!

- The 1956 Chevy is in the shop and it is RUSTY! Even though the car is already mostly stripped down, it still needs to come further apart before any repairs can be done. Once the front clip was off I gave the whole car a full wash to prep for going under the knife.
First the rockers were chopped off 1 at a time and replaced with new metal to keep the structural integrity of the car. Once I was happy with that I started cutting out all the rusty floors to make room for the new pan. Followed by a little repair to the quarter panel. This car was pretty rough, but with a little knowledge and some basic hand tools anything can be fixed.
Stay tuned for the next video where I replace the full floor in the car!

I agree with your other viewers. I will be following your progress on this 56 from start to finish. Good vehicle to rebuild. Thanks for including us in this build.
Thanks for watching!
I’m happy that you’re breathing new life into that ‘56. This build is going to be awesome to see go from junk to beauty. Keep up the good work Dan.
Nice work Dan.
55 and 56 chevys are my favorite cars good to see you bringing it back to life
Dan, I love watching you work on this ole 56. This car is the very same car as my first car that I purchased back in 77 when I was in high school. I owned that car for 5 years and ended up selling it because I was still a young Airman in the Air Force and didn't have the funds to repair all the rusted out areas on that car. I also needed the money for my new family so I had to sacrifice it. I'm still kicking myself for doing that. Maybe one day I can get another one. Good job man! Keep it up. I love your videos.
My trick to fixing a rusty car is just pretend that the rust never happened and ignore it and put a drive line in it and make it driveable then maybe think about fixing the rust, maybe lol. I just do it that way because everyone wants to fix all the rust before getting their vehicle running and "driveable" but usually those people never finish where if you atleast get it moveable under it's own power, things seem to actually get done, just my way, everyone's method is different. Good job, keep up the good work.
I did that with my daily but the peice of wood holding the seat up has fallen through the hole as it gets bigger.
@@Mercmad well as long as the rest of the vehicle is good and perfectly driveable, then it's worth spending a weekend and hackily fixing the rust and getting it back to good enough. Also try not to over do rust repair, everyone tries to do a chip foose job and they never finish where if you get done what you can and just make it work atleast something will get done.
Thanks for saving that great old Chevy!
From one body man to another nice job it's rough but nice job congrats.
Thanks buddy!
I learn something new every time . Good job Dan
I like it when you show the actual work even though it is time laps. I appreciate it
Cars look and feel cleaner neater with all the rot cut out
I am so happy to see the 56. Nothing like a little tri five action!
Nice to see you save that car from the crusher.
Great start Dan , I think this car needs to be a manual just to change it up . Love this build . Cheers .
Another Ausome video takes me back to when you built the 55 👌
That's a lot of work but well worth it in the end......look forward to the next installment!!!
Nice ! Good looking car!
That is exactly why I watch, to see your frustrations and tribulations. TFTV
Haha thanks buddy.
If I was your neighbor I would be at your house helping , it's so cool how you save cars and trucks and give them new homes or keep them !!! Keep it up
Thanks buddy
64 year old car , giving it life again .
The good news Dan is...you have done so many of these in the past and have already answered most of the questions, you are really blowing through this one.
And an endless supply of spare parts.
My first car was a 56 chevy 4 door sedan that I bought from my neighbor for 15 bucks when I was 14. I bought a 57 Belaire convertible from a family friend for $ 25.00 that had a blown 348, 59 engine & a wasted rear end. I put the two together, & had a sweet little car. My brother & I fixed it up, & then had it painted wimbleton white. White with a black top With Red & black interior. We found a console from a ford falcon, & plymouth bucket seats at our local junkyard, this was around 1972,or 73. That 57 convertible frame had a big X member built right in , cause it wasn't a hardtop, but still if you jacked it up with a bumper jack , you couldn't open or close the doors. Watching you do this reminds me of my youth, I'm now 63... We hadn't heard of a MIG welder , We had stick & Oxy-accetelene, but like I previously noted , it was 1972,& 73...
I once even owned a 1957, "150 " , 2 door sedan. It had stainless side trim like a 55, or 56, at the time I never realized what we had. We Stole it's complete front clip & trunk lid , Then we scrapped the rest of it. My Brother & I were buying every tri 5 chevy that we could find, for $5.00 to $25 bucks. We'd strip them then Scrap them, because they weren't hardtops. Most of them were 210 sedans, 2 door, 4 door, & a few station wagons , these days that'd be a sin. But back in those days We bought Quarter panel repair panels from Warshaskies, or J.C. Whitney, & all we had to worry about was that front seam, the top fell behind that 57 spear. There was some back panel blending, but remember we'd never ever seen a MIG., We were still diong hammer welding, with a torch , a body hammer, & dollie. We had to finish it much finer , cause our dad still remembered Lead Body Work. He taught me , that I had to get it as straight as I could before the leading ever began. We'd hammer & dolly, then we'd scrub that metal, polish it , till he said it was good. Then He would "Tin" the metal, prepairing for the lead.He used a neutral flame when the magic soon began . He would heat, & work that lead onto the panels made of steel, then he used an oak paddle dipped in bee's wax to work the lead into control. Then came that Vixen file, as it started to take shape.
It was a different time my friend, but , "Tri Fives Still Set The Pace"...
Always liked the 56 ... Looks like this one is off to a great start !👌Cool Car!
The next one should be fun, to see the entire floor put in place will definitely be a good one!
Two of my favorite vehicles, tri-fives and square bodies.
great save on a good ole classic. Thank You, Dennis in Virginia
Dan,
Thank you for all of your videos! They are very informative and helpful. I'm working on a 55 Chevy post with all of the same rust issues! Just finished the trunk, Next up is the rockers and floor. I'm glad you posted this video and another about the whole floor pan install. I have been going back and forth about replacing the whole pan or just piece part it, but after watching, I am going to tackle the whole floor pan. Thanks again!
Enjoying all the videos. Take care guys.
I used my engine crane with some tow straps to lift the body off the frame. Lift it up level by the roof through all 4 Windows.good time to replace the body mounts as well
Great job Dan! You sure do very fast work. That is a compliment. I love the ‘56 Chevy!! Keep on getting these Tri-Fives back on the road!!
I had a 57 hardtop I was going to put the full floor in but never did and sold it. When I was researching the best way to do it, saw a guy who lifted the body up, bolted the new floorpan to the frame with new body mounts, and then carefully lowered the body over the new floorpan, with the doors in place. Then went around and put screws in it and adjusted things till it fit well and then welded it in place.
Glad to see a new video up the 56 is going to be fun 👍
Lookin' good Dan. Thanks for sharing your hard work. You get more done on a Tuesday night than I do in a week.
I look forward to seeing to whole pan go in !
Its gunn be a battle haha
Love watching you work on your tri fives Dan.Can't wait for more videos on this Car.you got to keep this one.shes a beautiful Car waiting for you to find her under all that rust.
Nice work 👍
Dan, you're very lucky having that chassis in such nice condition
Floor goes back to the trunk pan. Nice work on the rockers. Good video Dan ✌
Your on a roll now Dan. As always it's great watching your work. Can't go wrong with a classic Chevy. I also love the same years of Buick. My Dad had a '55 Buick Special rag top. White over blue, dark blue top. Even though I was only 5 yo., I knew that car was cool looking.
Nice! Lovin' the Tri-5 videos, keep on truckin!
Great job. You make it look so easy. Can't wait till the next video. 👍

It's coming along nicely 👍👍🇨🇱 great job 👍👍🇨🇱
This car is gonna be a beautiful Beast
I love your videos way more then Sobering Restorations.

Can't make it any worse haha
You work is amazing simple but to the point Michael UK
Always enjoy your videos. Fun to watch!!
Wow Dan, this one particular tri-five is really coming together smoothly.. for now. Bringing life back into it! Rust is what's for dinner.
Do enough of them and its second nature i guess haha
@@DDSpeedShop Good thing! haha
Great video as always. Really enjoy getting to see more of the work being done.
its gonna be mint!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i've always wanted to build a car around a nice fitting door
Another fine ride
The frame on that 56 Chevy is really solid nice it's going to look good once you put that floor in 👍🏼
I Love watching your videos... It inspires me. Thanks Brother
The rocker and the quarter panel patch both look great Dan, nice work. Man you sure can get a lot of work done really quick.
And I love that bracing came to you after you chopped most of the floor out lol that is so Dan love you brother
Haha atkeast I'm honest?
Great job
Wish I had your ambition. Looking good so far.👍
Thanks for the video Dan! I didn't mind suffering through that at all! Thumbs up!
These are my favorite videos., taking on the big stuff and saving the car.
You can fix that rear quarter by skinning a couple of doors and making huge patches. Mine got rear ended, so I did this to repair the fold over the wheel well
Your videos are awesome because look how many cars you save
Not bad on the patch wield Dan
It's looking better all the time!!😀😄😊😁☺️😞
Before you know it,it will look almost new!!!
One piece at a time you always get it done. I think if it were me I'd go ahead and put a high x brace across the centerposts before I took it loose. Like no lower than door striker height. Just enough to kinda keep the sides from sucking in or spreading out. There will still be enough flex n room to get your floor sitting the way you want too. That was a really common color scheme back in the day. They liked it to use in the ads. Don't see it much anymore. Keep the junk in the trunk, take your phone with you lol.. Thanks for sharing
Haha stupid phone. Yeah the color is hit and miss for me. Looks good with all the trim
You're getting really good on the try five
Car's your going to be a specialist soon.
Good Job once again. Keep the videos coming.
Great video. The plan sounds good and it's gonna look really nice when it's done. As you say the car is in really good shape considering it's almost 65 years old.
Lots of progress, nice work. have a friend who did a 55 and he said he hated the way the car was put together, went back to 60s Camaros. After you played show and tell I understand why he wasn't thrilled with performing the restoration.
This is the reminder you asked for. But I forgot what I was supposed to remind you of. I did remember this part though
Music is actually compliments the video!
Very rare indeed!
Good job D+D
Awesome video, really looking forward to seeing this cool car come to life, you are killing it !
Coming together nicely 👍🏻
Awesome video dan can't wait for the next videos keep them coming buddy
Thanks for watchin
Great job once again on this tri five! Another awesome video! Keep them coming. I can't wait to see you put the floor in it.
I really like seeing a average guy working on cars in his garage love the videos keep up the great work maybe some ford's in the future best of luck
Thanks buddy
GREAT JOB BUD!! LOVE THE TRI-FIVE VIDS!! THANKS!!
Good job Dan. Looking good. cant wait to see you install the floors. Youre right. too. Every different part you need to work on your beast all ad up and can get pricey. Keep em coming Bro. From New Zealand.
One man prop rod hood removal trick, loosen all 4 hood bolts, then remove both front bolts from hinge completely leaving both rear bolt in, then remove one rear bolt on one side and drop hood on that side to the fire wall then walk around and remove the last bolt with the prop rod still in place, then remove hood as you did by pulling prop rod out to pull hood off, ( you can install a hood the very same way with a blanket across the firewall to protect the paint all by yourself ) Glade your taking my suggestions to hart as these are all tried and true processors :) Another trick, before you loosen any hood bolts take a sharp pointed scriber and scribe a line around the hood at the hinge location to let you save time installing the hood when it's time to re install it . ( yes I seen you fighting the hood back on your square body truck ) P/S Pleeeeese lube the door hinges on the 56 !! as them door hinges are not easy to replace lol
Luv this 56 project!!...its going to be an Awesome car!...
Can't wait to see that new floor pan
Man u got a lot done on your 56, really excited to seeing updates on this car. Would love cost updates on this old girl, best to u both!

Am impressed by the way you get after it and get a lot done in a short time. That"s a problem that needs work in my case ;)
I wish I would have seen this before I started to work on My 55 , all is not lost , I just have to take My bracing out rehang the Doors then do the rocker panels , I have the floor and trunk to do , I like Your ideas
Looks Good Dan. Thumbs Up !
Awesome 👍🏾😀 pitty you cant separate the body from the chase after you fix it , to sand blast it and paint it , but you will do what you did before on the others 👍🏾👍🏾
Looking good Dan love the videos and always looking forward to seeing more as usual take care
Cool car and great progress
Nice job with the 56 nothing better than seeing a Tri-Five being brought back .Hey just a shoutout when you put the headlight caps in and fit and weld them bolt the headlight bucket in and bezel for proper alignment to the fender cap roll on top and inboard to inner fender flange .I made this mistake and so have others after welding. My drivers headlight cap done many years ago is 3/8 off inward slightly on the top rollover portion to the bezel and its noticeable. Not a biggie on a daily driver so not sure if you care but just a tip. I will remind you when you do the video keep up the great work! Glenn a 55 owner. I have two videos showing it on RUclips ,......regards Glenn
Hello from Miami. Why has this channel not made it to 100,000 subs yet
