Full Floor Pan Replacement At Home - Fast, Cheap and Easy On Your Classic Car!

  • This is a video I have been very excited about to make! Everyone always talks about replacing a full floor in a classic car instead of patching together the existing floor. I have done A LOT of floor patch work in my day. I always had the attitude "make it strong and cover it with carpet". After doing the full floor replacement, I don't think I can go back.
It does look much cleaner than a patched together floor but that wasn't the selling feature. It was FAST, so much faster than a bunch of patches and welding individual braces. Plus once you cut all the old floor out, you're working with nothing but new metal! I will be doing this from now on for sure! The pan cost a few more dollars but you save in time, welding, grinding and you don't lose your mind.....
This ratty Tri 5 Chevy is coming together pretty nice. Stay tuned for the new video where the motor and transmission to go in.

I am old enough to remember when there were no MIG welders to do body work. Only BIG heavy industrial spot welders and Oxy Acetylene torches. I used these to do any body work that I could manage. Also patch panels from any dealers were astronomically expensive. So needless to say many of these older vehicles were relegated to the scrap yards when they could have been easily repaired. With the available parts and such now a days it has become much easier. I admire you're efforts to save what's left.

Good job Dan, although I must admit I was a little nervous when you started lifting the car with just the w.w motor hole. Glad you added the chains. Other than that, you made it look quite doable. And when you pay $300 for a 56 Chevy, you gotta expect to do some serious rust repair. Thanks for the video, looking forward to the next one, as always

Going with the whole floor was ABSOLUTELY the right call, Dan! Did the same for my ‘53. It saved a ton of time and several hundred dollars compared to what buying in pieces would have cost. You did a great job, and can’t wait to see what you do next!

Good question! ‘53 Chevy 150 2-Door. Grandaddy bought it in 1957 from the Red Cross. Poor thing was beaten to death and super rusty when we started saving her. That floor pan made a HUGE difference getting her back to being solid.

Great job on the floor install. I'm old school, but the disk brake conversion is the most cost effective way to go, I went with drums on my 56, and after rebuilding the entire system, plus new wheel bearings and going through 3 junk remanned master cylinders I had damn near $1000 cad invested.

Looks great and very doable. Your tool selection is great! I was 16 and bought a ‘62 Pontiac Laurentian 2 dr hard top with a broken frame. My tools were a jackal, hammer, chisel, and hand tools. Paid 25 bucks for the car and 10 bucks for a frame in a 61 Chevy out in a pasture. Me and dad got it all done and it was fun! All I’m saying to anyone is don’t let conveniences dictate what you can do. Just START the job and DON’T EVER STOP! You’ll surprise yourself.

They are loud but they do a nice job around the bolts, nuts and welds etc. I bought mine from Harbor Freight and I’ve used it for years! I had a body shop for years and it worked out well. We driving it to high school blew the head gaskets, we turned around and drove it home ! Smoke was comming in from engine bay,

Ahh, that was great therapy for the start of the day! Watching it basically self install itself was great. One step closer, keep the videos coming. Great job by the way!

I was kinda thinking along those lines but just take tires off and set the frame down on blocks, under lower control arms. Wood blocks just big enough to keep the brake drums off the floor. It would pitch/rake the frame forward. Actually give him more lift travel for the body if he needed it.
