Your takes on different media are addicting. Just the introduction on this video represents your channel so well.
This was more than a channel trailer. It was a mission statement. And one you've already shown you live up to.
Your content was one of the first progressive channels I ever encountered on RUclips and it has had a profoundly & overwhelmingly positive influence on who I am today. Thank you for everything 👍🏼
Same here! This work has been life changing and I'm incredibly thankful for the themes and messages I have learned from this content. Have another thanks for all of your hard work!
Would you recommend other progressive chanels please?
Edit: thanks to all who suggested channels. I recommend cck philosophy, if you are interested. I am from spain therefore most of the progressive channels I follow are in spanish, I don't know if there is anyone here who can speak spanish but, if that is the case, I recommend a channel specialized in feminism: ayme roman
@@n1c0lp2 not op but: coldcrashpictures, Lindsay Ellis, ContraPoints off the top of my head
@@n1c0lp2 gotta agree with @Nestor Mandela on ContraPoints. Her video essays are incredibly well researched and written, and her critical analysis is honestly top tier. plus, she’s funny as fuck. cant recommend it enough
Hard same. The video on toxic masculinity led me to ContraPoints and the rest is history.
A new trailer still counts as a new video.
I second that. I waited so long, even if it's just a few minutes long I was so excited! xD
I am sure this stuff takes a ton of time to research, write, record, and edit. I know it has been a while since the last video but we have to remember how much work they take.
Jonathan - I'm already a Patreon supporter but I'd encourage you to change your Patreon tiers from per-video to per-month contributions. You should be collecting enough money to support yourself and a small staff full-time doing this incredibly important work,
Oh, massively seconding this.
Yes! If you're clear that we won't get a video for awhile, that's fine. Just keep us updated or suspended as need be. Some videos are worth waiting for.
+1 for per-month, get that reliable cash flow!
I agree. Some of these videos are just going to take longer because more research, production, and editing is required. The per-video model doesn't work as well for the work you put into your videos.
Agree! Also makes it more predictable for patrons in terms of when we'll be paying for things. :)
I first heard of you by some right-wing guy when I was going down the wrong side of the road.
I recently discovered your channel via the tragedy of the droids video.
When I saw the credits I realized I had come full circle.
Happy to hear that :)
@@PopCultureDetective How do you feel about some other video essayists that analyze pop culture? I usually watch the Take, Captainmidnight and Hello Future Me
@Smash 123 why
@@David-bf2cg lol
The adorkable misogyny videos really rocked my world when i watched them. You articulated something i knew i saw but couldn’t describe. I might have to do a rewatch while i wait for your next project, I’ll definitely be checking out your patreon!
Amazing that you post this today as I am struggling to finish one of my final papers, the topic of which was chosen because of how impactful "sexual assault of men played for laughs" was for opening my eyes on just how embedded these toxic ideals really are. Thank you for being here on youtube, your work means a lot.
I’ve showed this channel to multiple English professors (and other English majors) and they all really enjoy it! One professor had told me that he had recently taught a class on sociological storytelling and had wished he had known about your Wall-E video on the subject because it would have been a very good piece for that class to watch. I wouldn’t be surprised if the same man told me that he was a patreon member of yours now, lol.
Born Sexy Yesterday has become part of my vernacular, and it’s only one of so many amazing lessons I’ve learned from watching your channel. I can’t recommend it enough, and regularly reference it in discussions on gender, race, masculinity and more. Your channel is a gem, and your work is astounding. Thank you for sharing your insights, opinions and knowledge! Can’t wait for the next essay
I've been watching Wandavision and I've noticed that Vision was born yesterday, is an a romantic relationship (albeit a complicated one), but is not depicted as sexy. Unless you really like British accents perhaps?
@@jimsandaluk1340 the most meaningful difference is that vision isn't naive, at least not in a childish way. He's ignorant of social conventions, but he's profoundly mature. He's not childlike in the slightest
I have learned a lot about this phone and it made legal rates across this entire device RUclips and all the information that provides and hell I'll sit back and watch your programs and learn everything about needs to be alarmed about this damn phone you can cut up cuz I delete Google without having to use them I was shocked
Is just Austin learning tool I never knew that has so much information to provide for free what is absolutely love it
Your work is incredible. "Sexual Assault in Pop Culture Played for Laughs" will always be the gold standard I judge all other videos and video series against, including my own content if I ever make any. I look forward to seeing more content for years to come! Keep up the amazing work!
I want to thank you. As it was your vids that helped me get away from the bigoted side of the internet and enlightenin me on the reactionary side of media.
Glad to hear it!
Just a minute ago I was wondering when you'd post again :)
Legit one of the best channels on RUclips, and perhaps the best essayist when it comes to delving into social issues in pop culture. Thank you for all the hard work you do. Looking forward to the podcast!

man, I can't imagine the amount of work just this trailer took. that was what, like 100 different clips that matched up with the script in a fun way?
I've lost track of how many people I've sent your videos to. they are amazing. thank you.
I don't know what your old trailer was like, but this one certainly did its job. I just subscribed.
Thanks :)
haven't seen you in ages but im so glad you're still here. i nearly dropped my phone when i saw the notification. thank you for the interesting perspectives and discussions you bring to youtube!
@@Anubhavsengupta1902 i know, i still missed him
Was just thinking yesterday, "Wonder when that guy is going to make another video."
Me toooo!!
Pointing to the annotation about becoming a Patron was a nice touch! I'll be sure to do so when I have an income!
This is a beautiful video that perfectly summarizes this channel. I love the way you go about analysing media. Rather than yelling at your viewers with typically strawman, loose, or reactionary statements like pretty much everyone else, you provide great and well-thought-out points. I wish you all the best. Stay safe. Happy 2021. I am patiently waiting for the next video. 🙂
We miss your long form content!
your channel made me look at the content on movies in a different perspective honestly
You just became my first Patreon support. I'm thrilled! Keep up the good fight!
Thanks so much!
Was mine too. I started my patreon account way back when to start supporting this channel
I got so excited when I got the notification lol
I would like to say how much ur videos have changed my world. Every time I listen & watch one my mind is blown about the insight u have. The indepth research u do, the understanding u hav, & I enjoy how u look at things from a physiological perspective. Ur videos always gets me to rethink about the things that we are watching & the affect/effect it has on us. Ur the Sherlock Holmes of pop culture in my book much love & pls keep up the amazing work. Ur truly one of a kind.
I never shut up about how this channel is awesome and I recommend it to everyone I know. Can't wait for the next videos (and the podcast!)
Evidence of the value of this channel is easily found in the thoughtful, sincere, and nuanced comment section. I hope there are many years of Pop Culture Detective essays (and podcasts) to inspire this communal exercise in curiosity and critical thinking. 💖

I have learned a lot with your channel, thanks for doing a great job with your videos (I have seen them a million times). Every time I can, I recommend your videos to my friends. Much support and hugs from Mexico💛
From time to time I search your channel in hopes that there will be a new video from some weeks ago that I missed, but no. Your content is absolute top-tier quality!
just a reminder that your videos are really the best
I CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS! Your videos are always so introspective and critical of pop media culture. I love how much time and effort you put into them. I think because of this, I can consume media more thoughtfully to understand the subtext behind the author's intentions (whether they're malignant or not). The teaser already looks amazing enough. Can't wait to see the actual video soon! :3
Thanks so much for what you do. This sums up what you do so well.
Your work has definitely been an inspiration for my own.
commenting because I love this channel. pop culture Detective was my introduction to media criticism video essays and a segue to others of that niche on RUclips. I think the depth of discussion and respectfulness on your comment section surprised me at first, and I realised that it's because of the objective yet empathetic way you present your ideas. I still think your content, and therefore, your comment section, is one of the best on RUclips. I'm unable to support you financially, but thank you so much.
I tried recognizing all of the 70 clips of the video, but it seems I don't have enough film experience yet. Maybe next time I'll be able to recognize all of them. In the meantime, I'll be seeing a lot of movies like those, so I can form my opinion and know a bit more about all of the topics like the ones mentioned in these essays. Keep the great work, your videos rock!
i feel like kindred spirits. this is the exact type of work I'm trying to do as well with my own twist and glad to know there's others out there fighting for meaning amongst media. it's art and culture that make this whole mess worthwhile and tell us where we are and where we're headed
There's no channel I get more excited about when I see a new video, even when I'm not in the right space to watch some of them right away. I appreciate so much the amount of effort and care you put into every video, down to every transition. Your videos have given me both new perspectives and helpful ways to articulate feelings I already had. Thanks for all the work you do!
I wouldn't care to watch an ad in front of your videos. They are made so greatly!
The king has (kinda) returned
Does this mean more videos?!? Your stuff is amazing!
Even your channel trailer is a quality cut above the rest. Colour me impressed.
Wow. The incredible amount of work you did just for this trailer! Every single clip perfectly placed!
I'v been waatching you for a while and it's a pleasure to see all these perpectives i may or may not have considered. you truly deserve some sort of award for the work you put in.
100% right. One of the most special channels around.
Several of you videos are youtube classics, keep up the awesome work.
This chanel is my absolute favorite. So exhaustively researched and patiently explained. Thank you for your work!
I already support you on Patreon, and I'm gonna up my contribution. What you're doing is so, so, so, so important.
Thank you for all the paradigm shifts you have caused for me! Your videos have helped me understand why I disliked certain tv shows/movies as well as opening my eyes to tropes/storylines I hadn't realised were problematic. Everyone should subscribe to this incredible channel!
I am consistently edified by your content. Thank you.
We need SO much more content from you and like yours. Everything you do is all the right kinds of thoughtful.
this comment section is making me so happy, i am so grateful for this channel and the community youve attracted and created and incredibly proud of the quality of your videos. thank you
One of the first media-analysis channels I’ve ever followed on RUclips 😌 excited to see new content!
I agree and support your ideas of the importance of stories.
I regularly direct friends and colleagues to your channel. Your videos always hit home and I always look forward to your videos. The Adorkable Misogyny one kicked it off for me I think and it really helped me feel more secure about my feelings of distaste when I see similar behaviour that are then waved off by others as "harmless". Thanks for that!
Perhaps you could make a video in the future about how class is perceived and how popular culture (especially those targeted at women and girls) often validates the notion that rich people, especially old money rich, are of a different caliber than those who didn't grow up with money. Is such a weird trope but you see it so often. Even in fanfiction! Having grown up in a socialist household it always felt a bit off, but it wasn't until I went to teach English in South Korea and consumed a lot more Korean media, that I realised exactly how wretched the trope was, it being an absolute staple in Korean dramas (poor girl meets rich guy) and how it often felt very westernized. Seeing it contrasted so starkly in a culture that wasn't my own, made me realise how strange it was in my own culture, if that makes sense.
I LOVE your content you're my favorite media critic
I love the way your video essays flesh out ideas so thoroughly and thoughtfully
Ayy man. The legend is back. This trailer is a great rep of what you show my guy. Keep up the good work
I love your channel a lot. I follow you on Twitter as well and saw your analysis of the Marvel movies and would totally watch a full series of video essays about them. Same with the James Bond movies. would totally wats essays about them. Your videos are insightful and engaging and really well crafted. You are really helping to change the preconceived perceptions of what it means to be a man and fully calling out toxic masculinity and I am here for it.
I appreciate the work you put into this channel and the videos that populate it. Thank you.
Your channel is why I introduced my kids to Steven Universe and I am forever grateful ❤️
Me too!
Your videos are entertaining to watch and your attention to detail to types of
media is very interesting Great channel!
*Robin Hood (1973):* _if the rich are not distributing the resources fairly, you are morally obligated to steal their wealth and distribute it better._
*every other Disney movie:* _DON'T DO THAT_
I love your channel and recommend it to my friends on a regular basis! It also helped to change my mind on some topics and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Thank you for an amazing job!
So glad to see you back ! You're work is so insightful and invaluable !
Thank you for continuing to produce good and thoughtful content.
5:05 the use of this fight club scene was so beautiful. So simple, yet so beautiful.
That Steven Universe at the end. Gold!
I truly appreciate your work, and have been sharing links to your essays for several years. Will look into patreon support!
Wow, the trailer is amazing. I love this channel 😍❤️
Guessing the next 3 video titles:
1) "Alien Analogs: Veiled racism with Aliens in film"
2) "Dogs and Grief in Film"
3) "Sci-Fi and the myth of the post-scarcity world"
I have made multiple family members watch the adorable misogynist. And now that I know what lamp shading is it's basically 50% of humor.
Omg I missed your videos so much! I've seen almost all of them keep up the good work
Your work is always so well articulated and researched - you've shaped my critical lens and given me the resources to further deepen my media comprehension. Thank you so much for your insights, can't wait for more :)
PCD, because you were always saying you need funds for an agency, I never realized you were the suture of this channel. You’re an incredible person. We need you to keep going.
Pop Detective I love your videos essays. They are very eloquent and are helpful in shedding light about things that so many of us take for granted. The "born sexy yesterday" blew my mind, as I didn't realize something so sinister was going on in otherwise harmless lucking films.
There's a very harmful trope that surely you must have noticed. It involves portraying employees in film & TV as either mean, irrational, or stupid. Case in point, the hostess in that first Meet The Parents movie. A person doing her job, and presented as silly for doing so. Then Ben Stiller yells at because he was "having a bad day", and being somehow framed as a victim. Customers (I work at a movie theater) have often compared me directly to said hostess whenever I tell them to form a line, so the idea that media reinforces stereotypes can't be denied. Another case is Tim Curry and his co-workers in the Home Alone sequel. Their lives are made a living hell by a spoiled rich boy. It's bad enough they work in a hotel owned by you know who.
Cheers!
Your channel is by far the most interesting one I've discovered on youtube. The podcast sounds amazing :)

You deserve every dime you get but I also think there’s nothing wrong with ads on your content unless you have a deeper reason outside of “inconveniencing” your viewers or to “look authentic”. I think the channel Nerdstalgic does the same thing but reality is, not a lot of us can or are honestly willing to pay out of pocket. Some of us can support by watching ads or sponsorships however. It’s your choice in the end but I wanna levitate any possible worry or stigma you have about ads if I assumed correctly.
Hey there hope everything is good on your end! I eagerly await a new video. I love your content!
Your channel is my favorite one.
Thanks so much for your videos. They really opened my eyes to the truth.
Just looked at your wish list. I wonder if you have read or considered reading Bury my heart at wounded knee by dee brown, The open Veins of Latin America, by Eduardo galeano, or in the spirit of crazy horse by Peter Mathiesson? They seem to look like they'd fit into that list.
I'll look into those. Thanks for the suggestions!
I really enjoyed your Newt Scamander video and I went to look for it today, but I can't find it anymore. 😔
