I’ve owned the prior generations as well, all base for 987.1 and 981 models. I loved all of them but the 718 handles incredibly well and low down torque helps it’s usability in daily driving. Otherwise, I actually think the 987.1 was the most fun to drive off the track.

    I test drove the TTRS and Cayman S. TTRS has the performance but does not feel special. Its also quite cramped. Cayman S has more of a sense of occasion and you know you're in something a little different. TTRS is a straight line projectile and tends to under steer but the Cayman is glorious in the corners. The Porsche is more of an involved drive with higher engagement. Loved the 5 cylinder on the Audi and would always pick it over a 2 litre turbo. Which is why I went for the 981.

Also, the frunk combined with trunk make it able to carry plenty enough to be a viable daily driver.

      I agree with your comments, though the drinks holders is hardly much of an omission. I have the same car as you, and I get somewhere in the 27`s ( MPG ) 99% of the time. Trouble is, this is motorway driving, and even if I go light on the throttle, the figure barely changes. I might if I am lucky get it to 28.0 mpg, though recently, in a weird day of driving, the car hit 29.1 mpg for the first and only time !! Go figure ?? By comparison, my Audi 2 litre TDI ( 2004 ), easily gets 52-55 mph in typical 70-80 mph driving, but I can easily see 61-63 mpg on driving like Miss daisy but still moving along at 70 mph.

      Yes John, I agree with you, though I would say comparing the quite sporty little Audi to a van is not a great comparison !! My car has the sport pack with 6 speed and lowered suspension and bigger wheels. Drives wonderfully on back roads. Actually has a little more torque than my Cayman at very low rpms, ie, under 2000, and has a firm but very comfy ride, wonderful steering and brakes. It really does amaze me at times and I have it 7.5 years now and going very strong at 135k miles. Sails through emissions tests too !! The Porsches big pluses to me is the looks and sounds. Naturally it handles amazing, and the brakes are great, but don't feel any better than the Audi to be honest. Clutch on Porsche not as progressive as Audi. I love both cars, but the big passion is for the Cayman of course.

      The times I have had 4x4's up my arse going over speed bumps and rough roads while I'm in my Cayman only for me to drive away once the road opens up.
      On the right road at the right time the little Cayman S can lift me to driving heaven, were everything just gells together and I actually enjoy driving again, I don't want it to end but when it does I have a big smile on my face and pat my Cayman like its my favorite pet.

    Hired a 718 Cayman S from the Porsche Museum at Stuttgart a year ago for a few days, drove on the Autobahn (could never go above 220km/hr before running into traffic) to Switzerland for a few days. Drove it on the Furka, Grimsal and Gotthard passes. The car has grown in proportions in comparison to the 987 and also put on a bit of weight. So it is no longer a small nimble car the 987 was and you can feel the weight penalty. The flat spots/lag in acceleration is noticeable especially going around tight corners. I much prefer the immediacy of the NA flat six. I would rather trade the improved engine performance for it. I also prefer the smaller 987 chassis over the 981/982 chassis even though the latter looks more masculine and better proportioned over the 987 Cayman (which suffered because it wasn't designed to be a hardtop from inception but adapted from a roadster design).

    Perfect car. I would only like to see a true sequential gearbox (which is kinda manual like on racing cars -- it nothing to do with PDK whatsoever or any such system on any exotic car but the new PDK is okay -- Porsche, at least corrected one thing that was wrong with old AT Porsches) one day in such a car, rather than being constrained only with Radical cars. But I wouldn't consider an H-manual stick nowadays. Although it *is* cheaper, it *is* more responsive but.... slower speed, a redundant clutch pedal, and going back to braking mostly with the right foot again - Nay, I'm not that nostalgic or that old. As to the exhaust noise -- the quieter the better! I love quiet exhaust. I don't need a GT3 R (street illegal, of course) for civil use. That's crazy. I do want some of the features of it, like a true manual sequential. But I don't need no fluff like they put on those exotic cars. I'd better go with a Spartan Radical RXC, although it's not perfect for civil use. But, I'd choose it over expensive uber cars every time without a single second thought, even if I had millions to waste. Those are just-show-off cars to me which have nothing to do with racing tracks despite their ads. That said, I have to admit they have their luxury things that should cost something. I just don't care that much about jewelry, mechanic watches (or gold watches, gold is heavy and impractical, mechanic windups go on the fritz -- the price tag doesn't matter -- it's a matter of time -- quartz watches never break down, not in 25 years of constant abuse) and show-off cars (they all have low mileages on them -- they are not that reliable despite crazy price stickers). Sorry. *This Cayman is a real deal though IMO. It's a worthy car.* PKD is bit of fluff to me. An old H-manual, well, it's kinda blast from the past -- at least in pro racing. So, it's even worse. I get it: it's just business. It's just that people need H-manuals to think they can drive race cars. Hush-hush, but they can't and never will. And this Porsche is as civil as hell, or as for a grandma. Sorry this comment is gonna be castigated, I recon, by all civil Schumackers out of hand as well as by habitue tourist sessionists on the track.

Totally different character. In my OP I was originally referring to cars like the 76 model 912, some of the larger displacement 914’s, and also the early racing 4 cylinder Porsches. This Cayman reminds me of those. Btw my Audis were two B2’s (81 4000 5+5 and 86 Coupe Quattro) and a C3 200 Turbo.

    • @daithilacha1
      @daithilacha1 5 лет назад +1

      Yes. Most people hate it, espc those used to the former models and they way they sounded. But there is a younger contingent new to these cars that love it.

    • @JD-ze2fy
      @JD-ze2fy 5 лет назад +2

      No not really. You should go listen for yourself “ live”. Like most people, I’ll guess that you will like the sound in person. I know people like to rattle on about how glorious the Audi TTRS sounds, but in the end the 718 always gets picked in head to head contests. That tells you how good this new version really drives. The 718 with turbo flat 4 is a major step forward for the Cayman. The 981 may sound better for most people but the 718 is a better all around car. On the other hand you can pick up a used 981 GTS much more cheaply, it just won’t drive as well. By the way, I also have a 987 and I can’t say that sounds better than the 718. Different but not better.

      Jimmy I’ve test drove the 718 s, Boxster and cayman, on three occasions, it has not got an “monotonous” exhaust note, as described in this video, comparing a 718 to an Audi TT, sure its dropped 1 third of its engine to make room for 2 turbos but, this makes the car better in every way, including in my opinion the exhaust note. Trading my 987 Boxster S for a 718 GTS would be better than trading it inn for a GT4 or a TT

  • @kylemartin6448
    @kylemartin6448 5 лет назад +5

    The new Porsche hierarchicy:
    2.0 4 boxster
    2.5 4T boxster s
    2.5 4T boxster GTS
    3.4 flat 6 CT4
    Then you buy a 911
    Fact is the old 981 was eating into 911 sales and re-alignment was necessary so that the cayman did not compete with the 911. Porsche has now fixed the problem and the cayman has taken a big hit for it.

      My previous car was a TT. It's a perfectly good car to drive and to be honest, 200+ bhp and front wheel drive is a very safe option and as much car as you need in the UK due to our poor roads and speed enforcement. It also beats the Porsche on tech. However, it is no match for the 718 dynamically. It doesn't even come close. If you want a nice looking 3 door coupe with some rear space for your coat, get a TT. If you want the best handling car on the road for the money, get the Porsche.

      @@davepuma1537 I would agree. I mean I currently drive a mk3 TT. The 2.0 manual 230 hp. So it's front wheel drive (my only criticism is they don't do a Quattro in manual) I really wanted one of these Porsches because they're beautiful and a head turner especially in the loud sky blue they do. But seeing this video all I'm seeing is the Porsche costs a crap load more, the interior of my car is 1000% nicer and no space in it at all! The only real benefit is a few more HP rear wheel drive ...

      There are three seat types and you can get 14/18 way adjustment in the sports(14) and sports plus(18). Did you try them all? I sat in all three before I decided on the manual sports plus seats. The 14 way standard sports seats gave me a sore back on a lengthy test drive but ironically the 2 way standard sports seats were okay so I can only assume that the 14 way weren't quite adjusted to my liking. I didn't want the weight or complexity of the electric seats plus they cost a fortune which I would rather spend elsewhere on PASM or 20s etc. As for looks like a Mazda, I have no idea what you're on about. The 718 in either Boxster or Cayman body styles is one of the best looking cars on the road today.

It reminds me of the build quality prevalent in the 1970s. Photographs of the issues with my vehicle have been sent to Porsche who replied that they are happy with the build quality of my vehicle. I can assure you that anyone reading this who purchased my vehicle would disagree! I have lost count of the number of issues I have had with it. The after sales support is criminal, my vehicle has been in the dealer for periods exceeding a month, not only have they struggled to repair the vehicle they have also damaged the vehicle whilst in their care. I have highlighted my issues to Porsche GB and they do not want to know.
