IDGuy and in the UK this Omega is priced at £11,100 and the Rolex even with the 10% price increase they’ve just levied against it, is £10,500.
So I agree, if the Omega was £5500 I’d purchase one, but not at this price.

  • @robynsjp

Nice review. Unfortunately, the Daytona movement does not even come close to the Omega or rather the Lemania 2310 base. The 2310 base from Lemania started its journey in the 1940s and is produced still today - 80 years and going - and was adopted by Breguet, Vacheron, Patek and others. Daytona was worn by a Hollywood actor, while Speedmaster went to the moon in mankind's most important event in world history. So the market demand may push Daytona way beyond the price of a Speedy, but it has by no means the real historic status the Speedy has - and will never have. Old Daytonas belong in a an auction house, old Speedies belong in a museum.

  • @63worf

Yes, you can get an original 105.003 for the same price, but it almost certainly won’t come with papers, so you have no idea of the provenance, service history, what parts are original or not, the case has probably been polished over the years, etc. A lot of unknowns. This re-issue makes it easy to own a piece of history and the ceramic bezel and sapphire crystal makes is suitable as a daily wearer. As a bonus, you can admire the caliber 321 every night when you take it off, and every morning when you put it on.

Absolutely. I'm curious why so many people don't catch the point. The key is the cal.321, a column wheel hand-wound chronograph with decent finishing and probably the best behind-story among chronographs. Name another chronograph with similar properties(don't tell me the Daytona, it's far far different).

I read that there are 6 watchmakers in Biel dedicated to the 321-assembly.
My watchmaker in Zürich told me that it takes about 4 h to assemble the 321 with a practice.
That adds up to about 60 calibers per week.
45 work weeks -> 2700 watches per year.
How long will be the production run? May be 4 years🤔
So we’ll see between 10-15000 pieces of that...

I'm buying this watch if i get a chance. On the list with my OB. I believe the 321 will always be a small production piece that Omega will use in exclusive pieces. Maybe after making a few thousand they will do a 42mm professional with the 321. I will buy this also.
Comparisons with the Daytona??? If Rolex were to release a new Zenith Daytona but with all the benefits of the Ceramic then YES compare.
I own a 1969 861 Speedmaster, a 50th Anniversary Apollo 11, and I now have to have this. I also own a Zenith Daytona which is beautiful.

I am sure this watch has been released for a very specific target audience - the Omega enthusiast who wants a special Speedmaster, but does not want to but a vintage piece (due to reliability issues, fear of getting something that's not 100% authentic, ...) and has the funds to pay the asking price. That person will hardly consider a contemporary Daytona, it's just a very different type of watch with a different set of specifications. I doubt that this target customer will care about the lacking chronometer/Metas certificate and the limited water resistance.
Although I wish it would only cost the half, Omega would be foolish to price this watch any cheaper. It's an icon, it has been anticipated for many years, and while very expensive, it's not totally outrageous, as the platinum version was. I don't think that it would be a good idea to make a lower-cost version of this time piece. In my view, that watch already exists - the regular Speedmaster Professional with the 1861/63 movement.
In my humble opinion Omega got it 99% right with this model - without fauxtina it would be the perfect watch to me, but hey, I can live with 99% ... ;-)
    Great video, BTW ... ;-)

It’s not really a re-issue. It has the 321 movement and that movement requires some special hand fitting and attention. But there are a lot of differences too. The case back being sapphire instead of steel is a biggie. It’s a really, really cool Speedy, but in typical Omega fashion, they don’t really do a direct recreation. They like to do tributes.

@@begood5652 I looked on the Smithsonian Air and Space museum website. I looked at Neil Armstrong's Speedmaster. You can see that the case type is the 'newer' twisted lug style case. You can also see the movement and see the column wheel that identifies it as a 321. That is why I hope Omega will do a 321 Moonwatch reissue to go alongside the "Ed White." It would be expensive, due to the 321 being hand made and the low production volume of 321 pieces. But still I hope to see them release that one day in the not too distant future.

  • @roamy3605

Not sure why but I've been in love with the caliber 321 since I first really getting into watches. I owned four 321 Seamasters and several Lemania based CH27 caliber watches. But never took the opportunity to buy a 321 Speedy. Came close many times but it just never happened. When I first heard about this watch being made I believed it would be a limited edition of about 2,000 units. If this would have happened I thought the price would be approx. $12,500-$15,000 and well worth it for collectors and enthusiasts. But now that we know that this re-edition 321 will stay in production for years, albeit a slow production, I think the price should have come in a bit below $10,000. Still expensive, but not over the top.

It’s priced to differentiate it from other Speedmasters whilst still creating a ‘halo’ effect for the whole model line. It’s priced, together with inherent limitations on production and supply, to ensure a degree of exclusivity. And, almost certainly, it’s priced to go head to head with the Daytona as an aspirational piece. I don’t think there can be any serious doubt that it’ll succeed on all three counts and do exactly what Omega expects of it (which is to add Rolex-style value to the brand).

Perhaps it is even better watch than Daytona. But Daytona is the only Rolex chronograph. This Speedy has no chance in gaining such demand. It is one of many Omega chronographs, even one of many Speedmasters... It is for watch enthusiasts only. Not so special for anyone else. Hype for Daytona is much stronger, everyone wants it, it's a status symbol (no matter how pathetic it sounds...) for average joe. That's why its hot, not only because of small supply.

Really don't get it. I always heard that everyone waits for this model. Model that can actually compete with Daytona. Ofc it's not as rugged as Rolex, but I don't believe that this is why we are ready to pay extra. Imo Speedy and Daytona are legends not because of robust, but because there is history behind these models. Maybe this is the strategy that will allow Omega to stand as equal with Rolex.

Just 1 inaccuracy. The FOIS actually has a sapphire not hesalite crystal.
1 way to tell for certain is the act the dial has the big milky ring around it. I think it would have been such an amazing release if they had gone with hesalite.
One of the amazing things they did with the 2020 ed white is change the sapphire crystal used. Though sapphire, it doesnt have the ring that other sapphire speedmasters have which makes it more appealing by being durable but maintaining the beauty of hesalite

That's a crazy price for a movement that can still be bought in it's original format, albeit decades old! Im inclined to agree it's sided up against the virtually unobtainable Daytona, repeating history in contention for first watch worn on the moon - could be an interesting marketing strategy if that's the thinking! I was interested, even registered my want with Omega and a local AD, but at that price, I'll stay in wait for the Daytona.

13500euro is the price of this new 321 model, its is the price of a steel Daytona but it is also the price of a vintage Speedy Ed White in good state (but it is so difficult to find and so difficult to know if it is a Frankenwatch or not). Omega having Daytona in sight is as good as pissing in the wind. If we go according to the erroneous trajectory that buying a watch is an investment, then due diligence test must be applied. Omega has a track record of mass producing their limited editions, which will certainly apply to this model, how will it out perform Rolex Daytona with a good track record of not only holding value but yielding profits? Most people driving the desirability of Rolex are not watch enthusiast. Omega should look inwards and not at their competitor, if value is your priority then you buy Rolex, however if value for money is more important you buy an omega. That seems to be the trend but I stand to be corrected.

Why do we love mechanical watches? It’s the craftsmanship. We pay a premium for an inferior time keeping device because we see that what we get is more than just a device to measure time. We are buying into skill and artisanry that has little right to continue to exist in the modern era. This movement is finished and constructed by one person. What better expression of skilled craftsmanship is there? That process is painstaking in terms of man hours and can only be completed by highly skilled individuals. So why so expensive? The answer really should be obvious to anyone

I would take a different approach if I wanted a piece of history. I would rather have a 321 that was of the real era. You would be getting a watch that is not only a better investment, but historically the "real McCoy". This is what this individual is really after isn't it?

I think that you get the same amount of joy with the standard speedmaster for a fraction of the price. For this price other brands will come in reach and I would prefer a mint daytona or a VC overseas over this Speedmaster. I will buy a speedmaster one day. It is not on top of my shortlist.
