Im from part of the world where no women cuts hair that short. I always wanted it. Finally at my 40 i gathered courage. Im living it. Yes, free hair day, product day. Some people hated it, many loved it. I love it so much. I feel liberated, strong and beautiful in different way.
Good for you! There is something to be said about stepping out of your comfort zone to make you feel liberated and confident. And all that matters is that you love it.
I always had long hair - then, after a traumatic end to a long term relationship with a man who was obsessed with my hair being long, I went from waist length to a pixie in one cut. It was the most liberating feeling in the world.
I am in the minority (I hope) in that I lost ALL my hair due to chemo. Going short is also something you have to be ok with mentally. You will feel more exposed in a way. Going from long hair to bald was a shock - but I learned to accept myself and now I am keeping it in a pixie. I’m still learning what products work for me and the style I want. I’ve purchased many different products but watching your channel and many other tutorials of women with short hair has really helped. It can be quite fun!
Sorry to hear you are in the unfortunate club. Same thing lost all my hair, but had had really short hair in the past, not the same as bald. I loved all the different styles I had when it came back and the colors. Came back gray, colored it and now I’m back to gray after 3 years no color. If I went bald tomorrow I’d be ok, pop my beautiful wig back on and good to go. I miss that thing, wigs over a bald head look dynamite and you can’t tell one bit. Thick beautiful hair! Anyway, I hope u feel better❤️ chemo is no fun.
@@laurieelle1420 Thanks - my treatment ended in 2020 so doing great! If I went bald tomorrow I’d be ok to - only I never did the wigs - just cute hats made for bald women. It was so freeing! I do know have thin hair and have thought about trying out wigs just for fun!
@@JulieNick28 it’s definitely fun, my hair is on the fine side, and this wig I had was real hair custom made and long beautiful hair, I wanted something totally different from my shoulder length dyed brown hair at the time, I wore hats and caps too, but oh I love my wig, it’s not as comfortable when you have hair.glad u are ok, I have been good since 2015, non Hodgkin lymphoma.
❤ 2019 chemo graduate. I just got a pixie cut yesterday! I’ve been styling it as a pompadour. Mine came in gray with chemo curls that relaxed over time. Contemplating funky color next 😀
I love you walking us through all the mental/emotional steps of going short! Sometimes, the decision isn't yours, cancer may take the away, BUT, the message is the same. You just need to learn to rock with your short hair!
As a 72 year old hair obsessed woman, my best look is a Bob. That being said, countless times I have had pixie cuts to shake things up a bit. Pixie looked good but did not really showcase my thick shiny hair. The grow out from pixie to Bob always purgatory and took over a year. A year of my hair not looking great, at all! Everything Justin says is spot on!
This sounds like my life 😏 I could just cry for getting my mid length bob with a long side fringe & flick up on ends in to layers with a ‘big mistake’ by hairdresser to cut a dead straight fringe 😩😩. Yes, 12 months of hell coming 😂
I agree with you. Justin is spot on! I also used to have a short style. I think that I look more feminine & feel better with my hair longer... I also like the fact that I can pull it into a ponytail.😊 Since going through menopause Imy texture has changed some, but I love my hair & I love watching these videos!❤❤❤
Have done the same and everyone agrees that the bob is my best look. However, I love the ease of the Pixie. It wouldn’t be easy if I had to see a hair dresser every 4 weeks because my hair grows very quickly and it needs maintenance every three weeks (not much but to keep the style looking nice, it needs clean up at the ears and back). Like you growing it out is UGH! I look horrid in the in between stages. Have gone through the process at least 5 times. Survived them all. :D
Proportion: the size of your head in relation to the size of the rest of your body. I discovered (the hard way) that cutting my hair short made me look almost like a “pinhead”. To further compound the situation, all of my larger scoop necklines no longer flattered me as they did when i had longer, looser hair, and about the only thing that even came close to working were V-necks. Also, facial features figure prominently as well. Do you have good facial bone structure, such as high cheekbones? Do you have a prominent nose, a less-than firm jawline, or other issues that need to be softened by a longer, looser hairstyle? These are just a few issues that I was confronted with when I cut my hair short. Hope this helps !
Justin is absolutely correct regarding short hair. My mother had five daughters in five years, yes, we were boomers, and she had all of us in pixies for years. No tangled hair for her. I am 71 years, gone through chemo, and flourishing! My face looks much better with a pixie. I have fine brown-silver wavy hair. When it was long, I wore it up in braids or a bun, as I was an RN, and it looked pretty, and it was off my face. You need a huge dose of confidence to wear a pixie, but as I have worn a pixie a most of my life, I know what style pixie to wear. When my hair thinned to nothing with chemo, I used Minoxidil 0.5% topical, and it helped restore and maintain my hair to its former fullness. When you are older, you might need to change your makeup to enhance your features, not necessarily more, just different shades.
Agree! And I would add - we need 'mature makeup' channels from women who are not 30-40-50... those years are when skin is still bouncy and lovely. Can we please have something for and by women age 60-70+? We have the money for the right products, we need to know what they are and how to use them to best effect!
Well, as a near-single then single dad, my 2 daughters (19 and 15yo) got the same treatment as you, thus, it's a family thing to not stand hair growth so they were in to be short haired like all women in my family, but had they inherited from their ex-mum, they'd have been in for pixie-cuts anyway: I wouldn't had been able to deal with two Rapunzels... They have cute round faces, it suits 'em really great. Well, the way to go if you get your young daughters pixied : no trousers, earrings ASAP and a stylist that does great job : you don't want them being confused for boys😉... And it's more interesting having them growing their neurons than detangling their hair
@@CatherineKuceraI get short hair without wanting them. Every time I get a trim is cut shorter then I asked for it . I have never been able to stay with hair dresser for longer than 3 cuts. At age 76 you thing you find one that listens to you. Frustrating 😮😢
I was the "ponytail" girlie all my life.... Until i cut my hair above shoulders few months ago... And the fact that i cannot put it into ponytail was quite a shock at first. I learned to live with it and now I love my hair shorter, learning more about them then if i left them long.
Justin, you are spot on about short hair. I was one of those women who could rock short hair, and I did so from 30yo to 66. Every 4-6weeks it was a cut, color, for a long time highlights. Sometimes it was just long enough to tuck behind my ears, but most times it was cut around my ears. Then I decided to let it grow out. Took me 2yrs, and after the first year I moved to TX from Southern PA. Afraid to go to a hair salon, as I knew no one, I started coloring it myself...and cutting on it too. After all, I wanted it to grow out! It looked okay, but I really wanted to see what it would look like gray. I'm German/Sadinian, so the Sardinian side gives me my darker olive complexion, and I have green eyes. I've always admired Black women with gray hair, any darker nationality, as well. And although my gray was always in the crown, it was now showing all over. Sort of a blend of gray, white, and my natural ashy brown, with some color still growing out. I was getting so close to getting it cut short, but wearing a LOT of baseball caps in this TX himidity😅 I was getting used to seeing it pulled back without all the height on the top. That was the thing I had to get used to...seeing more of my face, instead of my hair saying who I was. I'm an Integrative Health Coach, and I had an online get-together with other businesses. I decided to just wash/dry my hair, pull it back, add makeup, and go with a little bigger jewelry. My coming out, so to speak.😅 I liked it so much, snapped a pic of myself to update my FB profile. My gosh, I got a TON of compliments. It was such a different look for me. One of my friends said it was a more sophisticated look. At my age, that's a good thing.😂 Honestly, I love the simplicity!! Moral to this story...I am so glad I didn't get it cut, for ALL the reasons you mentioned! I had to wash, dry, style it every day. With this humidity in TX, even short hair doesn't survive. I love the outdoors, I'm a horse owner....and a person can never own enough hats when living in Texas.🤣
My hair grows quickly so I always get a cut every 5-8 weeks. I am 70 and have a chronic illness. I just got a pixie cut. I love it!!! I also have a large home to take care of inside and put. With th I s cut I can wash in minutes, use tiny bit of shampoo, and just comb and let it dry. It looks great, feels great and is wonderful to never have yo worry about my hair. I won't let it grow longer again.
I have worn a very short pixie for so many years now - and I absolutely love it. I decided to "cut it all off" when I decided to stop colouring my hair - I decided it was the only way I would be able to deal with the "skunk stripe" I would have (I went white in my early 20's and continued to colour my hair for 20+ years) - the pixie cut saved me. I had my stylist put in some blond highlights and then cut my hair into a really short, textured pixie - I continued with getting it cut every 4 weeks (I still do) and I have never had any colour in my hair since. And I kept the pixie.
I went for the pixie of my childhood a few months ago; my hair was chin length and since menopause, it got very (VERY) wavey. It demanded daily washing and blow-outs, and I couldn't find the "right" cut to work with on the days that I didn't want to straighten it. So off it came. I told my trusted stylist what you said about a softer neckline, shaggy almost, following the natural 'W' since I have a shorter neck. He listened and it was an awesome cut! Second cut? he took it too straight across my neck, and overall it was way less feminine. Next time, I'll have to remind him about that. Overall, I LOVE my pixie, and yes, I use a pomade and a touch of spray because I do have cowlicks lol but I never forgot something I read YEARS ago (here goes, gonna get some flack for this one!) "Long hair seldom looks expensive." It's true! next time you see a woman with a really sharp short style, I bet you'll say to yourself, wow...she really invests in herself. Long, healthy, glossy hair isn't as easy to have as one ages. I get compliments from total strangers and yes, almost envious glances from older gals who are walking around with hair that's too long, dry, over-processed and depressing and I've heard TOO many women say "My husband likes long hair!" Great! let HIM style it for you everyday! I have a 31 year old autistic son who is very much in his own ego-based mind (understandably!) yet yesterday at dinner he suddenly said to me "Your hair looks pretty like that" I nearly choked on my food! Good enough for me! PIXIE FOREVER! Besides, they just don't grow out as fast as they did when I was young! Love your channel, thank you, Justin!
I’m so glad the natural hair line works for you. It doesn’t work for me as my nape is long and ends up flipping out the hair in very strange ways when the rest of the hair is quite straight. So I have to keep up with it by using a comb razor. So wish I could get the piece-y look. I agree with your assessment about a sharp short cut. As my pixie begins to grow out, it looks more dowdy and flat and requires more styling to look good. Since I cut it myself, it’s easier to just go ahead and keep it trimmed than to work with it getting a bit too long.
My hair also changed after menopause. Make sure to check your thyroid, chances are you will need to adjust your hormone levels and it will help. Also, when Covid happen, I started to take vitamin D and B complex regularly, and in a few months I notice a very nice change in my hair texture. I can’t tell which of the vitamins helped, so I just continue to take both.
I'd love to be able to wear a pixie. Or anything else successfully, for that matter. Fine, straight, thin hair here. I settle for an approx. chin length bob, which is all stylists have ever suggested, recognizing the limitations. But it doesn't suit my face shape. So I'm researching wigs at the moment.
I have never felt so confident with a hairstyle as when I had short hair. With longer hair, I feel drab, part of the crowd, blah, like I have no hairstyle. I love short hair.
Been going to a barber for years, I have sent him so many new customers . Men and woman compliment me on my hairstyle, I feel the time and product it takes is worth it😁
I had waist length hair since a child, I cut it shoulder length and hated it. Months later I went short Bob and I've loved it ever since yes, I rock this short style. It also made me look years younger ❤ thank you Justin for your videos, plenty to learn.
#5 absolutely! I am 66 and have wavy hair, it has never been thick, but now is getting very thin on top (hereditary 😒), and have some weird cowlicks (thanks Dad). I fought and obsessed with my hair for YEARS, in the 70's it was trying to make it straight, of course 80's was big hair era, not easy when you have thin hair, finally cut it in the 90's and wore it various lengths, from short to shoulder bob, but still never really happy with it because I was always fighting against my natural hair, it would take me 1/2 hour (or more) just to do my hair every morning (wetting, blowdrying, straightening, etc), always having to 'adjust' during the day, not to mention that my color is blah, more so as I got older, so I highlight it, so damage was always an issue, it was just so stressful. A couple of years ago I just suddenly said to hell with it, I'm done. I now wear it in what I guess would be called a longish pixie (top is a couple of inches, sides are layered to just below my ear), I just wet it, put in gel, tousle with a diffuser, and done, takes me less then 10 min, never touch it again the rest of the day, looks way thicker than it actually is (thank you curl, very much appreciate you now 😁), wish I had done it years ago. I still highlight but damage isn't an issue any more, since it's curly (ie grow out not as noticeable) I only need to get it done every 8 weeks (and my stylist only goes regrowth), it is trimmed every 6 weeks, and I am no longer using all that damaging heat every day. So much happier
A year and a half ago, I got a very short pixie cut. I’d never gone shorter than a chin-length bob before. I had the right face shape for it and I loved how low maintenance it was for me (though it sounds like that isn’t always the case). I did grow it out. As odd as it may sound, I just didn’t recognize myself in the mirror. Not literally, but the woman looking back at me in the mirror was not the same one I’d been used to seeing my whole life. I looked liked a completely different person. I missed my “old self”, so I decided to go back to what I was used to.
Very glad this video showed up in my feed! I have been contemplating the "big chop," and it's so good to be reminded about the need for product, etc. My usual instructions are "leave it long enough to put back in a pony." I made an appointment yesterday to get my hair cut/trimmed, and I'll have a chat with my stylist about the possibility of going shorter in the future given the thickness and waviness of my hair--and also the recession.
Justin, in the past year I have transitioned from long hair with long layers to a bob (not the most flattering style for me), to a bixie, and yesterday I went with a softly undercut pixie with a neutral part so I can switch it up. The hairdresser I have used during this transition is actually my son's barber, and she really knows how to do short hair to create a flattering facial profile on me! I find myself going super short every 7-10 years for a while, then I grow it back out into some type of shag or layered style. I agree with you that there are a few steps in the grow out when the shape might not be the most flattering, but experimenting with products and different styling techniques is extremely important with a shorter haircut.
Thank you 🙏🏼 for sharing your years of knowledge and expertise. I had my haircut short at 50 I loved it. I should have done it years earlier. I know it’s different for everyone.
I've been cutting my own hair short for the past 20 years. I love it! I spray some volumizing spray on it while damp, and then dry it with the round volumizing attachment. Spritz a little finishing spray and I'm done. It takes only 5 to 10 minutes. My twin sister has extremely long hair and she has to deal with it for at least a half hour. I think many women have a misconception about short hair. 😊
I didn't realize how confidence is part of wearing short hair. I hated hair in my face and my actual hair... Growth patterns and the time it took trying to make it look ok..at best. So I went and had it cut off to the dismay of some of my friends. I like how it feels and how little I have to do to it. Since my comfort is more important to me than my senior citizen hair... I own it! I'm getting great responses about how good it looks. So I couldn't be happier. Happy to have watched your video.. Thanks!! ❤
For me, my confidence in myself does not hinge upon my hair because my hair does not define me. Having said that may I also say that sure I would like my hair to look good but 2 things immediately pop into my mind. 1. No one cares what my hair looks like because typically they are too focused on what their own hair looks like. 2. I'm not the one having to look at my hair...everyone else is 😂 Great video 🤗
Confidence IS key. I love my pixie cut, I own it, and I can style it 100 different ways. It's never the same style twice So many women think short hair will be boring, it's NOT! And it's not unfeminine, either. It's very liberating. 2 minutes if I fuss with it, 1 minute if I don't, and I'm out the door and on my way with windows down and sunroof open. Try it, ladies!
@@kelly3560 nah, depends on the style. As a tall plus sized lady I still find that hair that doesn't reach my shoulders looks far better on me than just long hair. Especially if it's an asymmetric cut. Pixie is not really a look I wanna go back to, but it's far better than boob length annoying hair that I just have to get into a ponytail (and I hate pinning my hair or gathering it in any way). But yeah, depends more on the hair texture and everything, with my thin fine wavy hair that has 0 volume unless it's pretty short, I'd rather have shorter hair than longer
I am with you on this one! I LOVE short haircuts! And I personally look way younger and more edgy with a short haircut. Also, I do not fully agree that short hair requires more maintanance. For me it's quite the opposite! 1-2 minutes, okay 5 mins max and I am ready to go. However, regular visits to the hair salon is a must every 4-5 weeks.
Justin you are so real!!! I cut my hair shot and let it go all white. I love it and you are spot on with your 5 tips. I do rock this. My hair is very fine and short is my best look! Thanks for what you do
At 73, I have short layered hair and love it. Layers are longer around the crown, tight in the neck area. I have it trimmed and shaped every 6 weeks, grey roots colored every 12. I use volumizing root spray. I NEED hairspray because I feel great when my hair stays put! 😊Every time I grow it out in a bob I feel frumpy looking when other women my age look beautuful in a bob. Shirt hair slims my face. Simply put, I look and feel better with it short. I LOVVVE my Laifen dryer! I have the beautiful pearlized pink one & the pearlized white one. Fantastic dryer at a very affordable price. Your channel is the reason I have my Laifens. Thank you so much, Justin!
Thank YOU for trusting me! I’m so glad you’re loving the Laifen. I also love that you’ve recognized the most important aspect of all of this…the ONLY thing that matters is that YOU feel great in the style you wear! I’m sure it looks great on you but you loving it is the true test!
A negative you didn't mention: If you're a woman and you have short hair, you will frequently still be charged for a "women's haircut", while men pay much less for the same haircut.
What's stopping you from visiting a barber? Answer: A barber doesn't take the importance of mens hair (and the consequences of screwing it up) nearly as seriously. That's what you're paying for. For a professional who better understands how important your hair is to how you feel about yourself.
I go to a barber shop to keep my short haircut cleaned/shaped up. It’s much cheaper and I never had any anxiety about anyone “messing up” since, despite being a woman, my ego isn’t tied to what grows out of my head. 😃👍
Great information Justin!! I've always had a bob length or longer, but at 70 facing a thumb surgery with a long recovery I need an easy care haircut. No styling or drying, products are OK. I've got a two weeks to decide, but these these five reminders are great!! Thank you!!
This video was so helpful! Thank you for addressing these five important points that I hadn’t considered when debating whether to go with a shorter style. ❤
I recently cut my hair into a pixie a few months after I cut a bob, and I hate that I have to shower every single morning before work or else my hair looks a mess. I miss showering the night before and not having to do anything to my hair in the morning. Also, I LOVE that I don’t feel as sexualized by men now that my hair is super short. It’s a noticeable shift and I’m all about it.
I had a pixie for years and loved it. I had a stylist who warned me about point #4 and also that because my hair was so very fine I would need to use tons of product. In the end I grew it out because I was so busy with grandkids and starting to go grey. It turned into a great way to transition to grey. I think #4 is one of the most important points. PS love your channel.
Great points! I have had my hair at all different lengths and colors. Have finally landed on my natural grey/white hair in a spikey, short pixie and love it!
I shaved my head. Hands down the single best decision of my life (thus far.) I save money, time and frustration. I don’t care about the weather. It’s better for the environment. My house stays cleaner. And if want to-I can just put on a wig (but I don’t.) Men have understood for years that the time spent on frivolous things like hair can be better spent on other pursuits. I’m never growing my hair back.
A collar bone length bob has been in my future for the past 2-3 yrs. For some reason after the last time I had blonde put into my hair it keeps breaking off even with trims every 6 wks! So frustrating! (Thyroid is fine but peri menopause has arrived with a bang so this could be PART of the issue) Getting my hair cut this week to a short bob. I’ve had it short before but I’ve learned a lot about ways to style hair since then so hoping I will be happy. Hoping this cut will get rid of the damage and my hair will feel and look awesome. Very nervous but excited to get rid of this damage!
I'm convinced I'm going short again. Been through this entire process a few times and I actually have more fun with my short hair. I don't like hair in my face but I don't mind a longer top. Styling is key and regular trimming is required when growing out and to avoid the cut losing it's shape. Spot On. Thanks for the sound advice Justin!
I've had very short hair a couple of times in my life and loved it. The reason I haven't gone short again is due to high maintenance and need for daily styling and product. This video is spot on.
The last pixie cut I got professionally was a disaster in an “old lady cut “ way so I had to texturize it all over myself through point cutting and it MUCH improved the look. Now I just trim it myself every few weeks and it looks great! With all the products out there and the messy look still in you can’t tell with a pixie if there are any mistakes anyway! 🥰✂️
The texture is a must! I do a proper cut about every 5 or 6 months, but in between am able to simply hack away at it and it works, maybe because mine is curly/wavy. My last excursion to a salon resulted in a worried looking stylist as he slathered more and more product in, trying to fix his mess :)
I find that I feel MORE confident with my super short hair! I grew it out once and kept it long for a little over a year and I felt so much less confident. With my pixie I feel younger and edgy. I have found that it is super important to find a good stylist and give them feedback about how it's growing out, what you like and don't like. Also, I enjoy that I can sometimes go a little shorter or change my part and get something that feels different to me.
100% agree with #5 in particular. I always think I can rock a short cut then HATE it and regret it and have to go thru the grow out process (which I am doing right now after getting a bixie that just wasn’t great). 😞
I like the tip you gave on a previous video. Blow dry downward to keep down frizz. It works🤩 such a small tip has saved me time! I went for 20 minutes to around 5-10 minutes🥰. Thank you!!!
Thank you for the helpful information on going short. You'd think short hair, less fuss. Nope!! I found that out the hard way. It wasn't really short, but enough that I couldn't put it in a quick ponytail or bun. That is my go too. Someone said hey your in your sixties, you should have a short hair style. Never again because I didn't know how to style it and just felt frumpy. So I found it doesn't matter about age it's how you feel about yourself. I love watching your videos, and you're seasoned advice. Thank you and keep smiling 🤗
You are so right on all counts. My hair length has been up and down all my 67-year long life, and I have never really liked it short, even as a young child, but I do occasionally get a bug to cut it off - and I never, ever really like it that way for long, even though I have always had great hairdressers and excellent cuts. I cannot *stand* having to deal with product, and worse, having to wash and blow it dry more often. I simply look best in a simple chin-length bob (simple because see above about product and styling), so I'm kind of resigned to sticking with it. I'm feeling bored with it again lately, though, so I may take another shot at short, especially after seeing some of the great cuts you've shown, but what *always* slows me down is knowing what the grow-out process will be. Anyone who doesn't consider this above all before chopping longer hair off is going to be very, very frustrated and upset at how long it takes to grow it back when and if they decide to do so. It's frustrating enough when you already know what you're going to face.
I went from long hair (mid-back) to short (almost a pixie). I simply could not get a handle on my long hair--too wavy to stay straightened, too heavy to hold curl. I actually WANTED a cut that would force me to style it every day. That was 20 years ago, and I haven't regretted it once. Best. Decision. Ever. 😊❤
Excellent advice! I wore my hair short for many years prior to COVID, then grew it out over the last almost 4 years and also stopped coloring. It's taken a while to adjust to the length (well past my shoulders) but I absolutely do not miss the upkeep of short hair. I would add that if you are sensitive to various makeups or lotions, etc, that you consider the possibility of being sensitive to styling products. I am extremely sensitive and really struggled to find effective products that didn't create sores all over my scalp.
I haven’t had a professional haircut since 2019. I color with henna. I’m 57 and my hair is thick and long. I hate getting haircuts all the time, hate blow dryers and product.
I had my hair cut short a few years ago, after having it shoulder length for years. Hated it! Decided to grow it out, then the pandemic. I also used to have foils done regularly as well. The last time I went to the hairdressers, it cost me a fortune for a cut and colour. Decided to toss the colour and let the natural grey shine. Turns out my natural colour is what the younger folk are paying a fortune for. That silver ash colour. 😊 and my hair is longest it's been since I was in my 20's. ( and I ain't telling you how long ago that was!😂)
Appreciate the reminders that short hair requires more work/maintainence/product/styling. Been thinking about going short - but I’m 90 & need easiest Style possible. Wish you had a. Shoo up here - Redding, Calif. Love your videos - thank you 🙏
So I’ve had long hair short hair, long hair, short hair, back and forth, but have found out long hair is where I should be now. MENOPAUSE 😫 I thought short was what I needed to help keep me cooler,ha can’t pull it up off my neck, so growing it back out. Love your info you give and all the ideas❤ Thank you!
I had a hairdresser Miss understand what I said. And gave me a pixie cut.😢 A little girl thought I was a man. I felt so bad. My sister was a hairdresser, she would cut all three of my sister hair. It was okay. Because we were little girl s then. But, I don't like short hair,on myself.
I was the same way. Thought shorter would be cooler but I was so disappointed when I couldn't find anything to keep it off my neck. And believe me, I was looking for anything and trying everything. I have been regrowing it back out for 7 months now....its better but I still can't get a ponytail that stays on the sides. I'm so frustrated...but I will get there....and I will never ever cut again lol.
Most important thing in your list was the grow out process. I went from long to short and I mean shaved in the back nape of the neck like a man cut short. Perm for lift on top. I LOVED Loved it! Eventually I grew tired of it years later. Again.....years later I finally did get it back to one length past the shoulder and permed. Now in my 60's, living keto and thinning hair, I NEED a trim. Hair feels shiny and healthy but thin. I am struggling to decide what is the next style for this time in my life. Justin your video helped to remind me of those stickily points to consider. Still don't know next style but you got me thinking. Thanks.💇♀
😊😊Several times in my life, I went short, short. But after a few months, I get bored and end up growing it back out. So now, I only cut it to my shoulders when I want a change.
I appreciate this content and how you addressed it😂 I am an active 50yo with an active household - 4 of our 5 kiddos still live with us. Two are adults and trying to find affordable housing. Two are school age and very social and active. I went short on the sides and back to save my sanity, and I LOVE it! Wash, shake, go!
Confidence is LIFE in my opinion…long, short, Bob, colored, not colored…no confidence you are not going to like any length or color!…I took the risk of growing my natural grey and I feel more confident than I ever have…everything you mentioned, are all spot on when going short!…I tried short a couple of times and both times did not like it, especially the grow out!!!!!…that was a great point, Justin!…another great video!…you are killin it!!!!👏👏👏👏👏💜💜💜💜💜
do you have a lot of grey hair? I'm bit under 35 but already having several grey hair, they seem to be appearing more and more. And like you, I also don't feel like coloring them away, kind of curious to see how that shiny grey will look near my face. 💛If you have seen RUclipsr Alisa Childers, her look has really inspired me..
@@AmericanDreamer it will be 4 years in March that I have been growing out my grey..I am 67 and have salt and pepper grey…I wish I had done it sooner!…the younger you are I believe the easier it is to adjust to the color…because your face still looks so young and you have time to adjust to the new look, as you age…I never thought I would ever do it, I am extremely vain and insecure…I am rockin it with confidence!..,more confidence than I ever had in my lifetime!..,doesn’t hurt to try it, you can always color it if you don’t feel good about it!💜
Loved the info you just gave! So on-point too❤I love short hair and found out a long time ago that my head CANNOT wear short styles😢broke my heart but I know now that I can go collarbone length and style to where it brings out my best looks! I am always on the look out for great combo looks too! Always look forward to your broadcasts🥰
Thank you! I totally know what you mean. I WANT to like my head shaved SO bad but when I shaved it…I looked like a convict, so….I’ll go ahead and keep some length! Lol.
It’s so true my confidence plummets if my hair is short and I find it so much work. When I was little I had gorgeous blond wavy hair. But my mum cut it in to a pixie and it really messed up my confidence. It was very difficult so I grew it out in the pandemic and my life is way easier with long hair, I love it.
I’ve had a pixie for about a year now, but I’ve had it cut in a pixie a few times before. My hair grows fast so fast, so I get it cut every 4-5 weeks, my husband and I do haircut day together, it’s become a special day for us. I have a nerve disorder, so before I got my pixie cut (a year ago), my hair was so long, over halfway down my back. I always threw it up in a messy bun because I couldn’t stand it touching my face, back, arms! I don’t have to worry about that now.
Thank you for this video! Getting my first pixie this week and I'm typing this out more for myself but if anyone else is in my position they might enjoy this rationale: 1) I can finally afford maintenance and my hair dresser has been the only one that has touched my hair in 9 years so seeing her every month or two won't be terrible. 2) I am SO excited to use product. My hair is down to my butt, very fine, very straight, and very tangly. It does NOT bend with heat or other curling tools. The only product my hair will take is detangling spray LOL. I've never been able to "style" my hair in my entire life. It's just in a bun and stuck to my head daily. 3) My hair being in a ponytail daily I swear is causing it to thin out even more than it already is. My scalp is sensitive and it hurts. I'm probably going pretty short with my pixie cut but I'm totally willing to use a headband or pins if it falls in my face. 4) I won't be growing it out. My mother has had a pixie cut my entire life and we have the same face shape. My current 3ft+ long hair causes me SO much pain that I will not see it as worth it to grow it back out. I'm a stay at home mom, turning 30 this year, and I am done with brushing my hair 3 times a day, crying because it hurts, not showering because I'm dreading getting it wet, etc... 5) I am SO confident because I genuinely don't care what people think. Everyone in my inner circle will love this decision I've made and I don't have social media so I won't be facing unwanted opinions. I've been thinking about this for years and just never committed due to the cost of maintenance, literally. I have ZERO fear or hesitation. :D LETS GOOOOO
Agree with all of these. I went from lower back to a pixie and it was the product usage that finally got me. Going every 4-6 weeks for a cut to maintain it also got old after about 2 years. I'm in the process of growing it back out now and finally got it below my shoulders.
I have gone from super long (hair to my waist) to not quite pixie short or bob several times in my life. The time I did NOT do it in stages I was shocked at how exposed I felt losing my length! Took a while to feel comfortable again. I'm currently growing my hair back out after losing a lot of it to 'rona fallout. Feels a tad thicker now. That's a huge win for me with such fine hair to begin with!🎉
That’s a valuable piece of advice I should have added to this video. Going short in stages is a great option if you’re not sure about going short!!! Thanks for sharing that with everyone!
Another great point to add to Justin's! Oh boy I had the same shock doing it all at once from longer hair. Took an instant to know it was not for me and forever to grow out.
Off topic, but I received my order of JUST DEFRIZ and absolutely love it! I have fine, thin gray hair and it is amazing. Does not weigh my hair down. No oiliness or greasiness. Thank you. Now I'm waiting for you to release other hair products. ❤
I recently went really short, boyish in length. It took me about 3 weeks to really settle in with it. It had been decades since I went that short. After a little trial and error I learned what made it look the way I wanted. Got a ton of compliments. Should have done it awhile ago. BTW I am 70. A very young 70 if I say so.
I agree with most of those. The one I would add is that if you have sensitive skin, and with the shorter cut, your hair touches your face more often, it will exacerbate acne... especially if you are using product in your hair. I have pretty much always worn my hair long, but decided to go for the Kate + 8 cut way back when that was popular. It did not go well. I hated the maintenance, hated the products in my hair, hated the hair in my face (constantly having to find my barrettes), and hated the way it looked on me... and it took sooooo long to grow out. Wish I had seen this video back before I had attempted it. :)
Justin, I enjoy your videos. Just a suggestion though...I find the music playing in the background, while you are talking, to be unnecessary & well, kind of annoying. Just my thought.
The confidence element is really interesting to me. I have had pixie to chin length cuts most of my life, including 4 years with a buzz cut, and I feel comfortable, natural and “me” in short hair. When I’ve grown it long is when I actually felt like I needed more confidence. Which I don’t really have, so it was always in a pony tail or bun. I wonder if the amount of confidence a style requires depends on whether it’s something you grew up with as a “default setting?”
yeah, probably. I had straight bangs when I was a toddler and all throughout my childhood, and funnily enough, that has been my go-to hairstyle when I need to boost my confidence. Right now I'm wearing my whole hair long and I do many different braided hairstyles and at first it was a bit weird because it's not something I was used to wearing, but now I love it and I don't think I'm going short or getting bangs any time soon. I get so many compliments on my braids and I feel like myself again.
Same, I don't feel like "me" with long hair, it ends up looking heavy + weighing me down/hiding my face. Short is much cuter + easier to deal with for me. I've also had it for most of my life, so it's not scary, it's just normal for me.
I LOVE short hair. It’s a style, as opposed to hair scraped back into a ponytail. But I agree totally with this video, especially the confidence thing. Love these videos 😁
I would never tell you to shut your face. 😂😂. Everything you said is absolutely true! I had a pixie for a while and it took forever to grow it out and the in between stages were the worst. Once I grew it out, I vowed never to go that short again unless I was going to keep it short forever. As fun as short hair was, I never felt like it was me, so at 58 I'm going with long hair and love it! Thanks as always for your insights!
Haha! Trust me, if you did…you wouldn’t be the first! Lol. I love what you said, you didn’t feel yourself! That’s so key! Even if it looks great, if you don’t feel like yourself, you won’t be comfortable or confident in it!
@@justinhickox my husband loved it short and still wants me to cut it, but as you've said over and over, if I don't like it, it doesn't really matter what anyone else says.
I live in an area that gets extremely hot in the summer (Phoenix area). Having said that I am done with shoryer hair as I can't stand hair in my face and in the heat no matter what product I use it no work!! So now I am going thru growing out phase which is torture. Some say just cut it shorter but with fine hair shorter feels like I have no hair (been there and tried it) I salute all you ladies who can rock a shorter do, have seen many that look fabulous. Just not for me and, yes, takes a lot more work. Too many other things to do in life than fuss with my hair all the time. Thanks for a great video, Justin😊
Same here. I'm in interior northern CA, very hot summers, so long hair, all one length, for me. Air dry, ponytail. I HATE the imposition of having to blow dry hair to get out of the house, which short hair requires. Plus not styling hair results in healthier hair.
Most of my life I have had a short pixie however since covid no salons I grew out to a lob now I am embracing my grey and going back to all pixie again 🙏🙏🙏
I had waist length hair. Cut to textured pixie. Love it! Yes, I now need to blow-dry, but, get so many more complments. Save so much on shampoo & conditioner. I'm seen as a person, rather than my glorious locks! Donated my hair to Little Princess charity who make natural wigs for children after chemotherapy! That rocks!
All good points. I had wavy, fine hair that was high maintenance. I had to use multiple styling products and tools to style it. I had it cut into a pixie years ago and never looked back. I can wake up and not have to do a thing to it. I can easily style it different ways and change up the color. Oh and confession time; I trim it myself.
Had Pixie for years loved it! Grew it out to shoulder bob. Cut it to chin length bob after brain surgery. Trying to decide grow it back to shoulders or pixie it again. Wish I could visit you to help me decide.
All the tips are so on point. Thank you 🙏 also about being confident in your haircut… I think it was Vidal Sassoon’s slogan when you feel good you look good.😊so true. ❤your video content 🙋♀️
Tx you. After being bald after chemo i lost my confidence for so long whilst my hair grew out. What you say is so relevant. Losing my hair was worse than losibg my breast.
I seriously appreciate the content of this video! I think of myself as a "long hair" person and when I have had it shorter you are 💯 % correct about all 5 things that will change with a shorter style!
I have VERY thick wavy hair. It looks like a troll doll when cut short. I used to be able to rock it back in the 90’s and had fun with sticking it up and wearing a Mohawk, ect. Now I’m liking a shoulder length style as the natural color that has grown in is very unique and looks nice a bit longer. It’s a beige-platinum blonde/silver mix. I agree with you on the need to style the short hair. That and the right products are a MUST!
I've grown my hair to shoulder length and a few times to the middle of my back and always go back to a pixie of some sort. All of these tips are so true, but especially the grow out process . It's so grueling and all of the awkward stages are a challenge to endure.
Regarding number 5 I agree that's the most important one. I would love to go back to my short hair I wore when I was so much younger. But I really do not like my profile anymore. I I'm just not confident enough therefore to cut my hair short.
Love your advice! Please do a video to help out us older ladies that have been through chemo. Hair grows back thin. Breaks easy. Have very thin spots!! Help!!!
I personally don’t want the full pixie because my hair flips up at the end, and I know what that would look like if I grew it out. But I recently cut it to a bob, and I’m really enjoying myself. You just have to be honest about the hair type you have, and what your expectations are from the cut. You don’t want a lot of work every morning or to be fighting your natural texture.
Thanks for saying that. So many people tell me to cut my hair because it’s less work. But when I cut mine I actually felt it was MORE work to keep it nice
I 💯 am confident rocking my short hair! Have been for 20+ years. I used Water Wax until they recently stopped making it so use a pomade now. I always feel pulled together and well groomed because my hair looks good!
Great presentation!! I love short hair but now have shoulder length. I love the way you explained the different phases of growing out short hair if you don’t like it.
I went from sholder length to a shaved head (#8 first then #3 for a couple of years) and loved it. Now I am short and tight and still love my short pixie.
Justin demonstrates in another video some really good ways to grow out short hair that allows you to have a hairstyle while it's growing. For example keeping the back short while the top grows out a few inches, thinking about how the sides can be "styled" when at awkward lengths or again maybe even trimming a bit while other parts are growing out. Worthwhile view if you are interested. Thanks Justin!
I'm glad I saw this today for those reasons I was thinking of short, I have a bob style shoulder-length that I could ponytail on hot n humid days which seemed to be every day this summer I hate hair hanging in my eyes something that you brought to my attention also. So I will stay a bob mid-length. Thank you❤
I went from blonde long hair to s short Pixi cut and colour to light brown and I just knew one morning that I want it short and not blonde and no extensions anymore 😊I am super happy and even time to get it into shape daily is kinda quick fun &for me easy..love your channel&had my hair cut according to one of your videos 😊thank you so much
Great video Justin. All these points are stuff you just don't think about when you want a big change, but I want to encourage people to try something new sometimes. Change is good.
When I got my hair cut short, I was nervous at first, I wanted short hair for a really long time (I'm 17 right now, I was 16 when I first got it cut short, about a year ago) and I feared it'd clash with my overall feminine appearance. However, I love it. Depending on your definition, it's either a short bob or a long bowl cut or kind of a hybrid of the two (it's around ear-length but with a shaved nape). I'm kind of obsessive about maintaining things the way I like them and so I added a quick buzz of the back of my neck to my morning routine right after I put on makeup. I love it so much! I think it makes me look grown up and professional. If you know anything about teenagers, it's that we like to be taken seriously by adults and this helps give that great first impression. Oddly enough, one of the "problems" you cited that other girls have said to me "Sally, how can you stand that? It must be annoying" is something I actually _like_ believe it or not. I love when I'm leaning forward and my hair falls in my face. I really love how it looks so I don't brush it back (unless it's to be flirty with my boyfriend). It doesn't harm my peripheral vision range much at all, I just need to turn my head more, I'm okay with that, my long neck looks its most elegant when my head's turned. I apologize for sounding full of myself there. Two other things I feared also turned out not to come true. One is that it'd harm my modelling hobby (I've done really small-scale modelling), it actually _improved_ it. The other is that I feared my boyfriend would hate it because guys like long hair and all that, so I had a big speech prepared about how it's my hair and my choice, to my surprise he *loves* it. He kept complimenting me so much I was smiling and blushing nonstop. I did *not* expect that! But it was a good unexpected. He thought I knew he secretly loves short hair on girls and it was a Christmas present for him and I was so caught off guard that I was like "uh, yeah, sure". My favorite part about having short hair is that it just feels like me, if that makes any sese. Long hair always felt like I was doing what was socially expected of me (when I say long, I mean LONG, at the time I considered your example of "long hair" to be in the "short hair" zone). I'm really girly, though, I exclusively wear skirts and dresses and always have (even when I was little, I remember at age 6 I'd ask the night before "may I wear a dress tomorrow, please?" because I didn't want to hurt my mom's feelings if she laid out something else the next day, nowadays I only wear pants if it's part of a costume that requires it, or if I ever fulfill my dream of living somewhere cold like Antarctica or far northern Canada during the winter). Having super short hair as a teenager while wearing skirts and dresses subverts people's expectations, but my parents said I would've fit right in with them because I have a very 90's girly girl look (my dad was born in 1980 and my mom was born in 1985, so they were teenagers during the 90's, so they'd know, which is really cool! Wow, I wrote a lot. I apologize for the lengthy comment. I hope it wasn't too much to read.
I've had everything from almost shaved off pixie to middle of back. I'm currently below the shoulders and trying to decide how short I want to go and the lack of ponytail ability is one that is a consideration. When I went natural, I went super short and so I got used to the growing out stages (with waves/curls it seems to work well if not super, duper longer than those with straight hair).
You go, girl! You be you and do what makes you happy.
I always had long hair - then, after a traumatic end to a long term relationship with a man who was obsessed with my hair being long, I went from waist length to a pixie in one cut. It was the most liberating feeling in the world.
Go Sister!
Love your positive attitude…..blessings ❤️
Thank you! The great part is that it sounds like you had the guts to change but also know what you feel good in!!! We’ll played!
1. AM GOING TO BE ,87 A CA NCER SURVIVOR. LONG HAIR. TIRED OF PULLING IT BACK IN A BUN.
I love a pixie cut. I have been cutting my own pixie cut since February 2020
Loving it
I was the "ponytail" girlie all my life....
I so wish you could post a picture of your amazing cut! It’s sounds wonderful!

Thanks!! ❤
I've had short hair since I was 16. I'm now 67. I've never regretted it for a minute! It's so easy!
Not for me. Looks lovely on petite women with small bone structure. I’m neither .
And very sexy
Going pixie tomorrow
Just got mine cut short. 11 1/2 inches chopped off! I’m ready for it’s challenges, but man! I’m loving the compliments and the freedom of styling!
Cierto, me cobraron más
I go to chain salon... who have stylists and they now charge the same price for the same hair length, man or woman.
Unisex places r best.
Great information Justin!! I've always had a bob length or longer, but at 70 facing a thumb surgery with a long recovery I need an easy care haircut. No styling or drying, products are OK. I've got a two weeks to decide, but these these five reminders are great!! Thank you!!
You are 100% correct in everything you said. From my experience you hit the nail on the head!!!
This video was so helpful! Thank you for addressing these five important points that I hadn’t considered when debating whether to go with a shorter style. ❤
You’re so welcome!! I’m glad I can help!
Your comments on going short are BRILLIANT! EVERY hairdresser should say that spiel to clients before doing a significant short style on a client. IMO
Know that feeling. Going thru growing out stage, too.
I like the tip you gave on a previous video. Blow dry downward to keep down frizz. It works🤩 such a small tip has saved me time! I went for 20 minutes to around 5-10 minutes🥰. Thank you!!!
That’s awesome!!! It makes all the difference in the world right!!
Thank you!! You’re so spot on. People that say age should drive your hairstyle are flat wrong IMO.
I’ve just gone short and I 100% agree with all the points you have made this video is very informative and helpful ❤
A lot of people go short to deal with hot flashes. It’s a mixed bag for sure. Hopefully longer will give you a bit of relief.
Darn straight! I've always felt that it's best to have my hair the way I like it, and feel good in it. Not what someone else thinks you should do.
Getting my first pixie this week and I'm typing this out more for myself but if anyone else is in my position they might enjoy this rationale:
1) I can finally afford maintenance and my hair dresser has been the only one that has touched my hair in 9 years so seeing her every month or two won't be terrible.
LETS GOOOOO
So glad I watched this! Gonna just pull my hair up when I want short hair for a while!
stop because you just made me realize why I've had perma acne these past few months. T-T
This summer I decided to go with a short pixie and I loved it! I could fix it in 5 minutes and it didn’t require any product besides spray to hold.
I loved this video Justin and I especially LOVED this set and lighting. Gorgeous.
I found getting a pixie very liberating. I also had an amazing stylist.
I LOVE short hair. It’s a style, as opposed to hair scraped back into a ponytail. But I agree totally with this video, especially the confidence thing. Love these videos 😁
Thank you so much! I appreciate that a lot.
One more thing- you need to do makeup when your hair is short. Cool thing is- you can be a little more dramatic with your makeup!
@@justinhickoxI have the swift in my cart-is the attachment magnetized? Love your channel! 😊
LOVE having the shortest Pixie I can get. Carefree and fun with my white hair. Blow it around until its dry and forget it for the rest of the day.
I just let mine air dry.
Was just about to go short...thanks for the timely advice ❤
You're SO welcome! Did this help?
@justinhickox sure did Justin.
Please suggest the kind of products to be used on short hair, especially fine and straight hair.
Thanks, good advice. Now I have to find someone to give all my beautiful clips to 😍
😂 just lose them, or forget them where you removed them last, like me.😅
I seriously appreciate the content of this video! I think of myself as a "long hair" person and when I have had it shorter you are 💯 % correct about all 5 things that will change with a shorter style!
So true about the hair falling in the face. Headbands became my best friends when working and I had a pixie😂
Help!!!
I love my pixie cut. I get compliments all the time. I don’t mind getting it trimmed every 2 months.
You talk so much sense. Great stuff.
Thank you!! I appreciate that feedback. Do you think you’ll ever go short again?
Thank you! I couldn’t agree more! Change is growth…even though it’s also really hard. I’m a horrible creature of habit so I get that!
This is one of the best videos you've done.
