EGR Valve Cleaning - 2001 Isuzu Rodeo

- Опубликовано: 8 фев 2025
- This video illustrates the method I used to remove, clean, and replace the EGR valve on my 2001 Isuzu Rodeo. I was having problems with the check engine light coming on, and each time the code was related to insufficient flow from the EGR valve. Once I cleaned the valve, the check engine light went off within the first half hour of driving afterward and stayed off for a couple of months. It eventually came back on, so I decided to repeat the cleaning process, except that time I also cleaned the EGR tube that feeds into the intake. That solved the problem, and the check engine light has not come on since (about 6 months to date). This process can be seen here:

I am obviously not a professional mechanic. I am just someone that likes to try to take on small repairs myself, and I have been greatly aided by other helpful videos on RUclips. My goal in posting these videos is to try to return the favor and help someone that may have encountered one of the same problems that I have. I'm sure there are better, more efficient ways to do things, and I am certainly open to constructive criticism. However, I hope that in some way my videos will be helpful.
My videos are not intended to offer professional advice. Always reference your vehicle's service manual for official information, and please do not attempt any repair that you are not comfortable doing.
Thanks for watching!
Great video Matt! I have lost count how many of these engines I've seen in junkyard with the stainless steel EGR down-tube inside the intake that are completely clogged and had brand new EGR valves installed on them. I guess people gave up on them since they could not get them to pass emissions, not knowing about the EGR internal down-tube. I always pull the EGR valve off, access the end of the EGR down tube inside the throttle body by propping butterfly open with screw driver so I don't have to remove throttle body. Plug end of internal down-tube by jamming a rag into end of it it with a rag, then fill it with carb cleaner or brake parts cleaner, let it soak for about an hour & monitor level & re-adding more as leaks into rag to soften & loosen deposits in tube. Straighten a metal clothes hanger or a 18" Nylon Pipe Brush, 1/4" Brush Diameter and run it up in the tube to break the junk loose and then finally flush with more brake parts cleaner or carb cleaner through the holes on top where EGR sits and re-assemble. Not cleaning that tube will do no good long-term.
Thanks
Where is that video?! Lol

3 years going...this has worked every year to pass inspection...Thank you one again, Matt!!
You save me time identifying where the EGR was on this car. In another car that I changed the EGR it was behind the intake manifold, and I had to take the whole thing apart. This one is super easy. Oh one thing, your car was cold so the Idle Speed Control was the one responsable for having the revs high. You are supposed to wait till the temp gauge is in the middle. If by then the revs are higher than 1,000 RPMs, then you have a problem. In other words you were seeing a problem where there wasn’t one. Thanks for the video.
Nice video! If you haven't already, I would clean the throttle body thoroughly with throttle body cleaner, clean the Mass airflow sensor with MAF sensor cleaner, and clean the EGR valve. My 01 usually idles nicely @ 750 rpms.
Matt, I was sure hoping that you lived near me in Colorado, but from the look of your home page, probably not! My Check Engine came on this morning, and I've noticed for a few weeks that the startup idle is higher than I remember. We've had a cold February here and some snow, but today is a nice 60 degree day. The Firestone garage man just wanted $100 to read the computer, and then told me his scanner didn't have the software for my 1999 model, anyway! That might be a blessing. Sure sounds like your EGR problem, but I'll get a code, first. I'm just too old for this kind of stuff anymore. It is difficult for me to get my body into some of the positions auto mechanics requires! I never looked at it this way before, but it's a little like sex. :#) Thanks for the videos. God bless you, wherever you may be.
Thanks for the videos Matt. They sure have been helpful. I have been struggling to figure out what is going on with my 2000 Rodeo. I replaced the EGR valve a couple months ago with a new one but things have just gotten worse. I decided to take a look a cleaning the EGR tube this time and when I took of my new EGR valve I could see that it had failed and was stuck open by a metal shaving. That explains the intake manifold gasket symptoms. It was throwing me off because I don't have an IMG leak. So needless to say, I will put on another new EGR valve this weekend and clean the tube as well. I wouldn't have ever caught this broken part if I hadn't taken it back off to the clean the tube. So thanks again.
mstates888 I'm glad to help! That's what these videos are all about. Great work on identifying your problem on your own! Did you figure out where that metal shaving may have come from? How is the vehicle running now?
Thanks for watching!
Great video. I would have liked you to include the torque setting you discovered. But, it’s easy enough to find online. I’m having the exact same problem with mine. Glad to hear there may be an inexpensive remedy. Thanks.
The PCV value can get stuck open in these and if it does it will allow your intake to pull from the hose right at the throttle body. After awhile the the Idle Air control valve and area will become very dirty and can cause high or unstable idle issues. Engine will also be consuming small amounts of oil over time. About 10mins of work and could cheap parts. After you remove the idle air you'll be able to tell instantly how/if its bad/dirty. From EGR valve into intake getting clogged is also pretty common.
PCV value: $3-$10
Idle air control: $6-$30
Thank you for your video, you are a life saver, after I watch your video, I did clean EGR valve and EGR tube, wo....la........ my car check engine is gone, total to fix is $6.00
$2.00 for the EGR gasket and $4.00 for the carb cleaning,
Again, thank you so.......o........o......much my friend
+Charles Ng Great work, Charles! I'm so glad my video was helpful. Congratulations to you for taking matters into your own hands!
i had this same issue on my 99 rodeo. it was also the throttle body control valve sensor. i replaced it with a new sensor and so far no real issuse. the check engine light still on. even after i clean the egr. and still pulls up on code check. thanks for video. now im dealing with leaking rebuild trans i just got put in. love how it has no dip stick and have to use a pump to fill trans. i just used a gear pump for boat motors i got at walmart.
Lord speXt Thanks for watching! This is definitely a common issue with the Isuzu engines. Once you know about it, you can prevent severe EGR clogging with a few routine cleanings each year. If you are still getting an insufficient EGR flow code, I would check the EGR tube that runs from the valve up into the intake manifold to make sure this is not clogged, too. I have another video demonstrating that procedure that you can watch by clicking the link below. I would guess that may be part of your problem.
EGR Valve & Tube Cleaning - 2001 Isuzu Rodeo
That stinks about the transmission issue. And I totally agree - not having a dipstick is a huge pain in the butt. I'd love to strangle the engineer(s) that made that decision. Good idea on the pump for the transmission fluid!
Good luck!
I'd like this video it helps me a lot....I just paid $400 on Pep boys cleaning my EGR...Thank you for this.
Gulliver Gimeno Thanks Gulliver! I'm glad this was helpful. It's a shame you were charged so much to have this done. Now you know how to do it yourself next time!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks obxguy1! Yeah, I cleaned the throttle body at the same time I cleaned the EGR valve, and in another of my videos I show how I cleaned the EGR tube. I have also cleaned the mass airflow sensor. I am still experiencing what I consider a rough idle at startup, and I have a feeling my thermostat is getting stuck open and may be causing the engine to run cold, and I am also suspicious that the intake manifold gasket may be leaking. I plan to remove the intake soon and address all of that, and I hope to post another video of that process.
Thanks for watching and for your comment!
Matt Payne s
Replace the Mass Air flow sensor - on my second one 98' Isuzu trooper with 238,000
Listen to my advice. Please remove the air intake horn and open the throttle body. Look inside you will see a tube. get a coat hanger and cut it to about 18 inches, bend a small loop in the end and reem the tube inside the air horn. that air horn goes to the back of the egr.
Exactly Matt when you open the throttle body you can see the tube. With the coat hanger you can reem the carbon deposits in the tube inside behind the throttle body door flap. Get a flash light you can see it clogged. That should take care of your egr code.
Thanks for watching Brian! I actually have another video showing the exact process you describe above. I have edited this video to provide the link to this other video. As you point out, this process is very important to do when you clean the EGR valve itself.
Thanks again!
Great,I worked for Cerritos Isuzu and that was a common problem with that vehicle.
THANKS. I removed the throttle body and saw the totally clogged tube. I cleaned it the best that I could for now. I went on a test drive and so far so good. We shall see how long the check engine light stays off. Thanks for your advice!
brian willoughby Thank you. Mine was down to a pin hole at best. Good looking out.
brian willoughby WOW what difference that made. Already flushed out the egr and still had a rough idle. Followed your advice and it idles like dang near new.
Great walk through, and very clean looking under the hood! I'm gonna do the same to my 02 Rodeo when I get the chance, the previous owner didn't keep up on the maintenance at all so I got a short list of things to do lol.
***** Thanks!! Good luck with your repairs, and thanks for watching!
Nice video. I just did mine. Saved a lot of money doing it myself.
I wish you could make a video on how to replace timing belt kit, including waterpump on a isuzu rodeo 01. Kit cost around 150.00, but mechanics will charge u a fortune to do that....sometimes around 1000.00.
Moacir Vascocnelos Thanks for watching! Great job on doing this work yourself. Like you said, you can save yourself hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars doing this kind of project yourself. Especially when you own a vehicle like an Isuzu that (at least in the U.S.) not many mechanics know much about. If I ever have to change my water pump, I will definitely post a video about it. The water pump was replaced about a year before I did this intake video, so I decided not to replace it while I had things torn down. That may not have been the best decision...time will tell...but I was ready to get the vehicle back on the road. Hopefully next time I have to dig that deep, I'll be able to it more quickly.
Where is the engine oil cooler Isuzu rodeo 99 6cly
Along with cleaning the valve take off the throttle in the front (4 bolts, one electrical plug) with a 1/4 wired line brush also clean the tube that goes to the valve from front to back. I cleaned the valve and it did not fix the issue until I cleaned the tube through the throttle body. There is no reason ever to replace this valve. 25 miles later the engine light was off and a big difference in low end take off.
thanks as i bought a new EGR valve but check engine light came back on for same egr " insufficient flow" code again. have to clean out port tube to block still.
@steven E can i clean the tube without removing the throttle body?
I have 2 rodeos and I had to replace both idle control valves and clean the throttle bodies, and one EGR valve.
Hi Matt. I have wanted an Isuzu Amigo 4x4 since I test drove one in 2000. Finally got my wish come true last weekend. In my efforts to make this my “project vehicle” I have scoured the internet for instructional, tips, and tutorials. I have found your page very helpful and I am curious if you still have this vehicle by happenstance. If so any more work? If not, any more tips for someone JUST getting into this. My FIRST order of business is, of COURSE, the starter. Ugh. But I’d really like to talk to ya, and get some tips if you have the time, patience, and generosity. lol thanks again!
I see you are in a similar situation. I loved Isuzu Rodeos when they changed body style in 2000. I had been wanting a new work vehicle lately, a truck instead of a sedan, and finally procured a pretty clean, rust free, 2002 Passport w/ 115k off the West coast. I flew in and drove it home 2100+ miles. Obviously, I have EGR code, that's why I'm here, and a tire bounce issue (probably bad tire as they are 10 years old) to fix and my tailpipe broke off in the drive!!! When those are fixed, I am good to go. I love it so far! How did your Amigo work out?
I'm sorry but, not sorry. Dude, i think you should honestly consider not narrating in your videos. That job needs to go to someone that can speak and not fumble every sentence. I skipped to pretty much the ending. Just some honest criticism. If not for nothing, the video was great and educating. Thanks, Cain
I have the same acceleration problem and I already cleaned the iac valve as you solved it?
Ver ruta de mangueras de vacio
I cleaned it and it still gives me the P0401 AND replaced it with a new EGR valve and the SAME code still pops up what do I do? 😣
You di not show us the final result afte the check enging light cleared. We do not know if what you did worked or not.
Great video Matt, didn't know OBD2 codes can clear themselves? Sense they store themself in a file like system in computer database and let's the cars computer work around the failing system until it's repaired.
Some codes need to be cleared by either removing power for a short period of time or a scanner. Others will clear themselves after the problem is corrected and computer no longer sees fault after a set number of engine starts. I have heard three but not sure about that.
Hey man am I able to use just wd40 to clean the inside and outside of the egr ? I have no seafoam or carb cleaner on hand
My car ISuzu Rodeo Pickup with 4JA1 engine shows engine light and has lost power. It has high idling now and revs alot
I was told be the smog guy that if you start the car while the ERG is off and it runs that the tube is plugged. If it starts and stalls out then the tube is okay. Any truth to this? Mine still runs without the EGR value on it?
what was the mileage at the time you cleaned it?
hello my 2000 honda passport have a problem when take off press the gas pedal something stuck it run not smooth and cross control light flashing same thing when im running normal when it bounds the same the cross control light flashing something stuck in transmission then goes run normal again. any body can help me with this problem ? please i need help ..thank you.
I'm sorry to hear about your issue, Edgar. I'm not familiar with the "cross control light" - do you mean the check engine light?
Let me know if you're still having this issue and I will do my best to help you out.
Is there no gas pedal cable hook up on the intake ?
todo esta bien esplicado y con lujo de destaye ere un buen maestro traduce esta pajina al espanol
+Rodolfo Cardoza Gracias, Rodolfo! Yo hablo un poquito espanol...me encanta de que te ayudan mis videos. Gracias por mirando!

Matt Payne please
What were the codes that made your check engine light come on. I got a P0137, P0157 and a P1171. Gonna clean my MAF today
Hey Dillon, sorry for the delayed reply. I believe the code I had was P0401 for insufficient EGR flow. It sounds like you may be on the right track with the MAF sensor to troubleshoot your problems. Check out this thread:
forum.planetisuzoo.com/viewtopic.php?t=559
Did you figure out your issue?
Dillon Thomson what was the issue with your Rodeo? I have the same exact 3 codes and have cleaned and replaced many things. Would love to know what was your problem. Thanks.
Great video-just curious what the torque setting was that you used to tighten?
Kyle Hooks Thanks, Kyle! My service manual states 18 ft*lbs for the EGR mounting bolts. I should add that information to my video...
Thanks for watching!
Can I use brake cleaner to clean the EGR?
Also, my brother showed me once how to clean one of the tubes. I think it was aluminum. Is that right? or brass? Skinny tube, fat tube?
Heavyboxes Brake cleaner will work fine, too. I tend to use a little of both (brake cleaner and carb/choke cleaner). It seems one cleaner will get some stuff out that the other won't, and vice versa. I do use them one at a time, though.
And yes, the EGR tube is aluminum, just like the rest of the intake manifold. It's fairly skinny...maybe 3/8" to 1/2" inside diameter. You can check out another of my videos about cleaning this tube here:
ruclips.net/video/E9kwgWvJQag/видео.html
Though I didn't have one to use in that video, a small wire brush is probably the best way to clean the inside of the EGR tube.
Thanks for watching!
could you make a video explaining the 4wd vacuums? when i try to engage it, the light keeps blinking
Hi Waseem, I recently had the same problem. I removed the two vacuum hoses from the vacuum switching valve while the vehicle was running, and that seemed to "free up" the valve, because when I re-attached the hoses, the 4WD engaged. If I get some time, I will try to make a quick video about this.
Matt Payne thanks man. that would be great!
I did what you suggested for the EGR and it worked :-) Thanks! Have you ever had an issue with an ABS sensor intermittently coming on? Doesn't throw a code, so I'm not super worried about it. Just curious - I've heard cleaning the sensors is an easy fix.
+Lauren Sanders Cool, nice work Lauren! I'm glad you were able to solve your problem. With regard to the ABS light - yes, I actually have an '02 Trooper that has the ABS light illuminated. Most consumer code readers won't read ABS codes, so even though you/the guy at Auto Zone might not see one, if the ABS light is illuminated, there is an ABS-related code stored. But - you can actually check these yourself for free. Here's how:
Put the key in the ignition and turn it to the "ON" position, but don't start the engine. Then, take a paperclip, and insert it into pins 4 and 12 of the OBD-II connector (the plug where you connect a code reader). This initiates the ABS diagnostic sequence, and you will see the ABS light begin to flash. It should flash once, then pause, then flash twice - this signifies Code 12 (one flash equals the number one, two flashes equals the number two, etc.), which is the self-diagnostic code. It should flash "12" in this fashion three times - you can ignore this, but it's the flashes that follow that are important. It should flash each stored code three times. So, for instance, in my Trooper, I got the "12" code three times, followed by six flashes, a pause, and one flash (this happened three times) and then six flashes, a pause, and two flashes (this also happened three times) - this means I have ABS codes 61 and 62. Once all of the codes are flashed, the cycle begins again with "12" flashed three times, followed by each code being flashed three times. This will continue as long as you have the paper clip "jumper wire" inserted in pins 4 and 12 of the OBD-II connector.
I am planning to do a tutorial video on this soon, but in the meantime, here is a really great thread about this process, including an illustration of the pin numbering on the OBD-II connector, as well as a graphic with the ABS codes:
forum.planetisuzoo.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=77314&p=739150&hilit=abs+codes#p739150
I hope this helps!
+Matt Payne Huh, cool trick. I'll have to try it. Thanks and keep posting vids!
Hello! I Have 96 Honda Passport , i jus want to know what kind of cleaner or spray to use to clean the egr valve and around it. Im planning to buy aftermarket egr valve and before i install what kind of cleaner do i have to use around it? do i have to clean also the throttle body? and mass airflow sensor as well? is it the same spray cleaner? thanks!
Hi i have a 1998 Amigo standard transmission. I got the code for the EGR, so my question is does it have to be with a shaking problem when I shift ?
p1120 throttle position sensor circuit 1 fault on rodeo 2001 if I fix this problem you think it will fix the rest of the code problems and do you know how to fix this problem how can I do it myself? Matt
I would probably try to find a replacement throttle body at a junkyard and swap that into your vehicle to see if that solves the problem. I am not sure if you can remove just the throttle position sensor from the throttle body or not. You can learn how to remove the throttle body in one of my other videos linked below:
ruclips.net/video/E9kwgWvJQag/видео.html
If that clears the P1120 code, I bet it will solve your other issues. However, it is possible that the problem is not with the throttle position sensor itself, but rather with the wiring, so there is no guarantee that changing the throttle body will solve the problem. That is why I suggest trying a throttle body from a junkyard instead of buying a new one, in case that doesn't solve your problem. At least that way you won't spend quite as much money.
Good luck! Let me know if you figure it out.
Hi car people told me it effects mpg but by how much?
my 98 passport started stalling out on me last night out of nowhere it was 4 degrees and today it got up to 35 and it drove just fine i have 140k on it change the oil every 3k to 4k.do you think cleaning these problems that i have read about in your comments might help
William, I'm sorry to hear that! Do you have any check engine codes present? If not, it's tough to say what may have caused your problem yesterday...but certainly cleaning the EGR valve is a regular maintenance item and can't do anything but help the performance of your engine.
I hope you get your issue sorted out. Let me know how it goes, and feel free to message me if you have any questions...I'm far from an expert, but I more than willing to try to help you in any way I can. Good luck!
yes i have the Egr code popping up so tomorrow i plan to cleaning up everything and see if it helps...ty for responding back😎
Hey William, just checking back with you...were you able to get this sorted out with your Passport?
what do you think about my 2000 rodeo that starts but takes a least 2 times to start and runs. check fuel pump, change fuel filter, clean mass flow sensor and throtle body. could be the egr and the tube or something else? thanks for the video is good.
Felix Velazquez Felix, sorry for the delayed response...I'm not totally sure what may be causing your problem, but it sounds like it could be a variety of things. I suppose you could have clogged/dirty fuel injectors, worn out spark plugs, or a faulty spark plug coil/boot. Have you gotten any check engine codes?
Thanks a lot for watching my video!
Not a all brother. I already change spark plug and change fuel filter. I think could be a bad fuel pump cause the only thing I did not have to test is the fuel pressure. If you'd have any idea what is the pressure on it so when I buy a pressure dial I'll check it. And thanks for the response.
Felix Velazquez Felix, I think the fuel pressure should be as follows:
Ignition On, Engine Off = 38-40 psi
Ignition On, Engine On = 32-34 psi
I would definitely start with a fuel pressure check. If your pressure is low, check your filter first to make sure it's not clogged (even though it's new). Then you could move on to the fuel pressure regulator (I have a video showing how to replace that). If you do that and still have bad fuel pressure, you may have a bad fuel pump.
Good luck, and let me know what you find.
Thanks and have a great day!
Check your fuel pressure regulator. Mine was leaking fuel into the intake and it took a few tries to get it to start. A quick way to test it is remove the hose from the FPR (on the fuel rail, next to plug #5) and see if gas begins to dribble out the regulator. If so then it needs to be replaced. It's a cheap part and requires snap ring pliers. Theres some stuff in the way you need to remove to get to it, or you can just take the fuel rail off. It's easier to just remove the metal shield that's next to it.
hi matt my 2001 Rodeo everytime I stop at a red light it will shut off
Is your check engine light currently illuminated, and if so, do you know which diagnostic trouble codes are present? The stalling could be one of many different issues. If you have no trouble codes present, I would probably start by checking the fuel pressure at the fuel rail. I will try to post a video about how to do this very soon.
hey matt it was my egr valve
10-4!
Hey, will this work on a 1998 Honda passport?
thanks
+gary voss Hi Gary, yes - this should work the same way for a 1998 Honda Passport. It is the exact same vehicle as the Rodeo, just with Honda badges.
Thanks for watching!
I did that and still get a p0401 think maybe the steal tube on manifold
question on this car took. the car to get an oil change at a local service. and it was denied due to oil splattered all over the pan just purchased this vehicle so nothing about it someone said it might be the gauge that is probably broken do you have any videos on oil changes also for the transmission i know for that it uses dextron and it is under the driver's side so where is the gauge for the oil
That is interesting...I've never heard of a shop refusing to service a vehicle because of an existing issue. Was this a shop that only does oil changes?
I have posted an oil change video - check the link below:
ruclips.net/video/4MSxlkLKNeA/видео.html
As for the oil pressure gauge, I have never had to replace one, but it should be located near the oil filter, in the area underneath the radiator. You can download a factory service manual on the "About" tab of my RUclips page.
Thanks for watching, and good luck!
Yeah i tried looking for the factory service manual on your page but only see dodge ram manual isthat the one?
Yes it was a shop that does oil changes and tires
Thanks for the video lots of help for this vehicle it's a rodeo have you had to do the automatic transmition change or does it have on because because I am confused at the topnof the engine the container in front of the brake fluid is empty and someone told me that is steering wheel dluid goes but it says only use ATF Dextron is that the ATF AUTOMATIC tranmition fluid or steering wheel fluid sorry its all new to me I used to drive a cobalt mow I have to learn about this car lol
Rachel, I posted the correct link for the service manual in my comment above, but here it is again:
mega.nz/#!6QEkyBAY!OHgvdn6UMzCmj3Jw1meJN3HpPh1BUmLbnH76vYwx99M
Regarding the automatic transmission fluid - yes, you definitely need to have the transmission fluid changed at regular intervals. The manual I have says to change it every 20,000 miles with new Dexron III fluid. Unfortunately, General Motors (GM) basically manufactured this vehicle for Isuzu and decided to use a very weak transmission that was originally designed for lighter-weight cars. For that reason, it's very important to make sure the transmission fluid gets replaced regularly to insure proper operation of the automatic transmission, as Isuzu vehicles are quite heavy and even normal driving puts a strain on the transmission. Also, this transmission does not have a dipstick that allows you to check the fluid level from inside the engine bay, which is a real disadvantage. The fluid reservoir you reference inside the engine bay is for the power steering fluid; it uses automatic transmission fluid (ATF) as its hydraulic fluid. To check the transmission fluid level, you have to turn the vehicle on and let it get up to normal operating temperature, then crawl underneath the vehicle and remove the transmission fill plug (different than the drain plug) from the transmission oil pan. If the fluid level is correct, a small amount of fluid should run out of the fill hole when the plug is removed. This is not something most people are able to do on their own, so a lot of people never change the transmission fluid. For these reasons, there are a lot of Isuzu vehicles with bad transmissions.
Good luck with yours! My advice would be to do as much research as you can to arm yourself with knowledge and then find a good, reputable repair shop that does all types of vehicle repairs to maintain your vehicle.
matt the trouble code is P1120 p1125 p1295 p0440 p1515
You previously mentioned your Rodeo shuts off when you come to a stop. Do you also get a "Reduced Power" light illuminated on the dash? The P1120 code is related to a problem with the throttle position sensor, which tells the computer how far open/closed the throttle valve is so it knows how much fuel to inject, how to operate the transmission, etc. The P1125, P1295, and P1515 codes are also related to an issue with the electronic throttle control system. The P0440 is a leak in the evap system, which basically captures gas fumes and recirculates them through the fuel system and does not likely have anything to do with your vehicle stalling.
I think your issue is related to the electronic throttle body/throttle position sensor, or the wiring going to it. You can see how to remove the throttle body in my other EGR cleaning video:
ruclips.net/video/E9kwgWvJQag/видео.html
You can purchase a replacement throttle body new, or a used one from a junk yard, and install it to see if that solves your problem. If not, then the issue is likely related to the wiring going to the throttle body.
I hope this helps some - good luck! Let me know if you figure it out.
Serious question. Does your check engine light stay on. Even if you clear it on a scanner? I have a 2004 4x4 isuzu rodeo. I can't get that light to go off. Please help
+GoproZack Zack, your check engine light will stay on as long as the problem that caused the light to illuminate in the first place still exists. You need to find out what trouble code(s) is associated with the check engine light being illuminated. You can go to Advance Auto Parts or Auto Zone and they will read the codes for you for free. Then just google "Isuzu ______" (fill in code number) and it will tell you what the code is. Let me know what the code is and I'll try to help you in any way that I can.
Good luck!
***** thank you for the reply. I have been clearing and checking the codes for over a year and there all different codes each time I check it but mostly the egr valve comes up got a new one a little bit ago and it dident fix the problem
+GoproZack Was the EGR code associated with expected voltage being out of range? If so, and a new EGR valve didn't solve the problem, my guess is that there is an issue with the wiring harness going to the EGR valve. I would disconnect the plug from the EGR and inspect the wiring, starting at the plug and working your way back.
***** haha this might be a funny question but could it be my battery its self it's reading replace when I went to get my oil changed last week?
+GoproZack Is your code P0405? If so, that is not a battery issue - the computer is looking for a certain electrical voltage to be reported from the EGR solenoid based on the position the computer has commanded it to. If the voltage reports outside the expected range, then a trouble code is set and the check engine light comes on. A P0405 code probably means an electrical problem, or a bad EGR. I would start by inspecting the wiring. Here's a helpful thread about this:

Worked like a charm...I used this video and this link (5th post from the top) : www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=85576&highlight=egr and 15 miles later the light went off and I drove straight to Jiffy Loot for an inspection...PASSED!!! THANK YOU MATT!!!

+PrettyPaul Awesome, I'm glad you found this helpful! Congrats for fixing your problem on your own!
Hi math I have my trasf light on what can be the problem ?
+Arnulfo Sandoval I'm not sure I entirely understand your question....what light is on? Is it the "Check Trans" light?
Yo quiero ver comotraja elcable de las tran.micion de las lsuzu 2002
Hey Bro. thank you for uploading this helpful video.. But I need help with my 2002 Isuzu Rodeo the Reduce Power keep showing up, I just want to know what is the cause of this problem? thanks....
You're welcome, Kenneth! First, do you have any Check Engine codes present? Most often, the reduced power lamp illuminates in conjunction with an issue with the electronic throttle system.
how did you make out cleaned mine put new egr on drove about 290 miles and check engine light came back on for egr
You need to clean the steel tube inside the intake manifold. Take off the plastic tube that comes from your air cleaner box to the front of the intake where the butterfly is located. Twist the butterfly so it opens and you will see a steel tube about 1/4" in diameter that comes down from the rear of the engine. THAT is your EGR delivery tube. THAT IS PROBABLY CLOGGED! I see dozens of these engines in the junkyards with the front of the EGR tube completely plugged shut with carbon. Use a long philips head screwdriver to break through the carbon and then clean with Seafoam and a bottle brush or pipe cleaners until clean and code will go away.
will recheck and clean
same trouble with my 99 and has a new egr valve
Mine has a gas smell but can't find it n it's not leaking gas or nothing
my 2000 Isuzu rodeo big problem changed fuel pump last month now getting 35 psi but all it will do is crank and die what is wrong
What code was set
We put a new EGR but it still came back
Thank you so much!!
christian rodriguez You're welcome!
Whats the torque specs?
@@notsonoble1_294 thank you I need that in my life cause I'm no mechanic but I prefer to do it since I care about my vehicle
did you not disconnect the battery cords before doing this??
Rebecca, I honestly don't remember if I did disconnect the battery, but that is always a good idea. The odds of shorting something during this procedure are pretty slim, but it's better to be safe than sorry! Thanks for pointing that out.
Is not necessary when you desconnet the battery the computer system is goint out and you need run the car 65 millar to reinvent
thank you very mach my brother bcoz i have same problem thanks

mi izuso 95,está muy acelerado, que puedo hacer?? que alguien me diga algo por favor
Me to have this problem
Your idle is up because your engine is cold.
Yep. An EGR valve that's stuck closed will have no effect on idle at startup, and will only possibly cause the engine to run a little hotter. An EGR valve stuck open will cause the engine to stumble and hard start, and you'll have to give it a little gas to get going, and then it will idle around 300 rpm until the engine reaches full operating temperature.
DON'T USE SEAFOAM OR ANY OTHER PETROLIUM BASED CLEANER FOR THIS. I ruined a perfectly good egr valve and had to but a new one. If u are going to clean egr, use an alcohol based cleaner like mas airflow or throttle body cleaner
+J bands Haha yeah What happened to your EGR? I'm not saying you are incorrect, but I've never heard that petroleum based products could damage the EGR. After all, it is controlling fumes from the combustion of petroleum-based fuel.
Idk, a I know is my car was hesitating a little, I followed your instructions and cleaned the egr, when I put it back on the car barely made it to autozone... Like it wouldn't go over 25 mph, it was acting all crazy, they scanned the code, it said faulty egr so I bought a new one and it fixed it... It's possible that the egr was on its way out and maybe cleaning it just hurried the process, idk. The guy at autozone said never use PETROLIUM BASED products to clean the egr, I'm not a mechanic so I can't say for sure weather it's true or not
+Matt Payne MATT HAS NO IDEA IF THE EGR IS DRITY DONT U THINK THE TUBES R CLUGED ONE GOSE TO THE CAT. THE OTHER UNDER THE PLENTUN N THERES SOMETHING CALLED DRIVE CYCLES U KNOW NOTHING ABOUT
Good job thnx
Good....look.

What torque setting did you use, thanks

another code for small leak
lol,,, No change,,
hate videos where you skip all of the good stuff and just show us results as if we are pros!!
What exactly did you feel I left out? Most people would probably so I included TOO many minute details.
You're supposed to show how to. Clean it,
Really man? you're going through a ton of effort and money buying all that seafoam, gasket, etc. Just go online, order a brand new one for like $40 and bolt it on.
David G David, I'm not sure if you're kidding or not, but I can't say I agree with you. First of all, the least expensive EGR valve I can find online costs about $85. Secondly, you have to replace the gasket whether you clean the valve or install a new valve, and the gaskets only cost about $1 each from Rock Auto. Sea Foam and carb cleaner are items I generally keep in my workshop anyway and use quite often, and simply cleaning the EGR valve doesn't require using an entire can. Finally, it's best to clean not only the EGR valve, but also the tube that runs through the intake manifold, so simply installing a new EGR valve may not solve your issue, depending on what it is. If you get check engine code P0401, it is recommended to clean both the EGR valve and the EGR tube. If you get check engine code P0405, I suppose you could simply just replace the EGR valve with a new part. However, I was recently able to eliminate the P0405 code for less than $5 by removing the valve, cleaning it with carb cleaner, and re-installing it with a new gasket. I didn't even remove the throttle body; I simply chocked the throttle open with a rag and cleaned the tube through the open butterfly, so I didn't even need to install a new throttle body gasket.
If the part is broken, by all means replace it. But I don't see the need to spend $85 or more when I can simply clean and re-use the EGR valve for $5 or less.
Thanks for watching.

$5 or less? just because you stock sea foam doesnt mean its free because you keep it anyways, all those times you mentioned you used it and the light came back, and even after this cleaning you said the light came back later down the road. Stop being a cheap ass. Your effort and labor is horrid, just replace the damn part, you're so technical when in reality its not hard.
David G David, we can agree to disagree, and I'm happy to carry on a civil conversation with you, but please keep your language clean. I want my page to be helpful, and that includes getting input from other viewers, so your comments are welcome; just please keep them clean and constructive. I'm not a professional mechanic, and I make that pretty clear on my main page and in my videos, so I welcome constructive criticism and tips that can help other people. In the end, that's what I'm trying to do by posting these videos - help people.
With regard to replacing the EGR valve vs. cleaning it, I can say that if you add up all of the money I've spent on cleaning supplies for EGR-related issues, and even assume that I was not able to use any of the leftover cleaner for other projects (which I have been), the cost would still be less than 1/3 of the cost of purchasing a new part. I put a can of Sea Foam in my fuel tank each time I change the engine oil to help keep the fuel system clean, and I had noticed that when I did that, the P0401 code cleared for a little while. I mentioned this at the beginning of the video not to tell people that's what they should do, but just retracing my steps and stating what I had done to that point. Clearly, simply adding Sea Foam to the fuel tank is not the solution to this issue, nor do I mean to suggest that it is.
On top of that, my efforts were compounded because of lack of experience. The first time I removed the EGR valve and filmed this video, I cleaned only the valve itself, and just the very end of the EGR tube where the EGR valve mounts. This temporarily solved the problem, but the EGR tube probably contributes the majority of the exhaust gas flow restriction, so my P0401 code came back a few months later. That's when I did some more research and realized I needed to thoroughly clean the EGR tube. This process was filmed later and is the video link that pops up at the beginning of this video.
What I should have done was clean the EGR itself AND the tube the FIRST time I did this. It's been almost 2 years since I cleaned the EGR tube, and I have not had a single check engine code related to the EGR system since then.
So, let's say someone watching this has a P0401 code. They can replace the part for about $85 or more (and that's ordering online; the part costs $150 at my local Advance Auto Parts). However, simply addressing the EGR valve itself may not solve the problem, as was the case with my vehicle. So, you could spend a fair amount of money and still not solve the issue.
The alternative is to simply clean the existing part AND the EGR tube (which in my opinion, is the main issue and the most important step), for a MAXIMUM cost of maybe $22 if you have to go out and purchase everything new (maximum of 2 cans of carb cleaner @ ~$3.00/each, 1 can of Sea Foam Deep Creep to clean/lubricate the EGR pintile @ ~$11.00 [though this may not even be necessary], $2.50 maximum for the EGR gasket, and ~$2.50 for the throttle body gasket, if the throttle is removed for cleaning). This should eliminate the issue, and as I said, I've not had another EGR-related check engine code for about 2 years.
If you prefer to install new parts vs. cleaning/reusing, that is perfectly fine, and there is nothing wrong with that. Where I disagree with you, however, is that doing so is somehow cheaper than simply cleaning and replacing the existing part. If I had simply cleaned the EGR tube the first time I removed the EGR valve, I probably would not have had to touch the system again for a long time. If done correctly, this problem can be corrected for much less money than purchasing a new EGR valve, and again - the valve itself is only part of the problem. The real issue here is the EGR tube.
Thanks again for watching and commenting. I am always happy to get input from other people; there are multiple ways to do things, and the more information viewers can gather here, the better off they will be. Again, the purchase of my videos is to help other novice mechanics such as myself.
Take care.
