no matter how many videos scotty does on cleaning EGR valves, I always look forward to the next new one.
Thanx Scotty! As a retired auto mechanic now selling Auto Parts and handing out repair advice I've suggested this to many of my customers and shown them how to do it. Most of the time they come back doing virtual cartwheels saying "Thank you so much! You've saved me $75!" That makes for repeat customers!
Only $75? My EGR valve was $150!
They spent half that in gas $ instead just buyn part and installing hiself not long after i bet he bought egr why risk motor damage over 75or150$ called matainence stop bein tite asses lol
@@stevehall4586 Give me your money sucker. Motor damage from a stuck egr? LMFAO!
You sound a lot like me. Passed my wrenches down to my sons and starting selling parts. I sell people the gaskets and a can of carb or TB cleaner and tell them how to clean it. $20 vs. $200 always gets them
The cleaner is 12-15$
I love your channel, and all of your videos Scotty. Lately I've watched the "EGR cleaning" video and the "clamp for radiator hoses" videos. I always learn so much here. I don't want to spend oodles of cash at the shop when I can do most of this myself, and having mostly older vehicles (1990 F250 XLT, 1998 Nissan Sentra [insert sad face here], 2000 Mazda Protege) I would be spending more than just oodles to get them running decently again.
I'm getting a bit more comfortable tackling larger repairs, and I wanted to thank you for making these jobs a little easier to handle. Keep up the good work and REV THOSE ENGINES!
Took my '94 dodge colt to 2 different professionals who couldn't diagnose why the car was running poorly. I started doing some googling and youtubing... thought clogged egr sounded right. Man that thing had chunks of carbon coming out... ran like a top after that. Learned something about my car and " professional " mechanics
Did they still take your money?
Pep boys billed me $100 for an hour diagnostics... they got it to run a little better for a little while. Come to find out they did that by fully advancing the distributor/timing. My neighbor who worked at an indie shop did not charge me... he swore it was a temp sensor.
I only own rwd redblock volvos now and diy what needs done... very simple cars to work on.
Yes a very professional 'solution' How to increase engine wear, decrease fuel efficiency, lose power and fark up emissions. Google is our friend.
So does the erg valve being dirty cause a car to stall out and make idile go low . Trying to see what wrong with my van.
Randi Evans yes a faulty or dirty EGR can cause rough idle, stalling, and decreased mpg

Someone should put a Scotty kilmer struggle sound compilation video up on RUclips. Hilarious when he tightens up a screw or pulls a part out of car he grunts
I had the same problem. Check engine light for egr. Dealer said it is a digital egr and must be replaced $500 🏃. I took it apart, cleaned, changed 3 silver gaskets and check engine light gone.
Jose Garcia wow
Good job avoided unsafe bareback sex , dealer wanted to bend you.
Did you plug in a code scanner and did it say all your cylinders were misfiring? My car is running fine, but the check engine light is on and I'm getting codes that say all cylinders are misfiring. Some forums are pointing to the egr valve
you cheated the owner of the dealership out of $500 of profit.
Unsafe bare back sex hahahahahha 🤣😂🤣 bro
Thanks Scotty! As always, a great video. All the best from Dublin in Ireland!
I had my EGR valve replaced by a mechanic, but it was defective. he refused to replace it, and I wasn't about to pay another mechanic to do it. So I replaced it myself. But I'm adding this video to my favorites, so that I can learn to keep this EGR valve clean and functioning well for years.
On this particular V6 Toyota engine that he's working on, the old 3VZE (which I have) also exists the EGR probe (~6" long) which goes inside the intake plenum next to the EGR. That should be removed and cleaned as well as it gets corroded with deposits. And as you will see, there is also the EGR Modulator in front of the EGR which looks similar in that it has a round top. The EGR Modulator has 3 vacuum hoses (P, Q, R). There is a small disc-shaped filter in the top of this unit and it should be removed and cleaned out. Other things to look for in this smog system are the PAIR reed valve unit (further behind and lower from EGR), the Evap "charcoal" cannister on rear left fender, and lastly, check the inlet / oulet temps of the Catalytic converter with a laser thermometer which should be ~80 to 100 degrees in difference for a working cat If under 75, the cat is on its way out.. If under 50..replace it! Replacing the oxygen sensor down there is also not a bad idea.
Those are all the main smog items on this engine.
Great video! I needed this video specifically!!
From One Vet to Another, thanks Mr. Kilmer for your videos
Thank you, Scotty. Your videos are so helpful!!!
Scotty, you should have told folks to check the EGR passages into the block etc. They often plug with carbon and need to be cleared out.
You say clean it with "any type of solvent" but giving some examples of good solvents would help. Thanks!
Perfect timing for this video Scotty. Thanks!
Always my first stop for DIY car repair videos
Scotty is manic but that’s part of the appeal!
The main part is the range of good tips and help he gives.
Thanks!
You really don’t want to soak the EGR valve upside down - that diaphragm is made from material, not metal, and the carb cleaner or solvent can actually destroy that. It may also be a good idea to try to clean the passages that you see, when the EGR valve is off the car, as carbon can block those passages as well.
C'mon man go you know the thing

Thanks Scotty , I’ve done this before . Oiled and done a vacuum on it ! Very informative . Old school.

Good deal! I have the same engine, so this tutorial was even more helpful to me.

Great one Scotty!! If it ever freezes up, problems can occur for sure. . . idle speed, etc.
We love you scotty ♥️
True
Thanks scotty, my EGR valve has been throwing CEL codes for a long time now and I was prepared to take it to a shop. This I will try first.
What were the results? Did you fix it?
Tip ,use some never seize on the threads this will help a bunch when you have to pull off in the future
For my Toyota Prius 3rg gen, I used an extra reach 12 mm racheting wrench for the three nuts in the back and good luck reaching the 4th HIDDEN 12 mm nut underneath the EGR cooler. Good video
It would have been nice to see a before and after video of this situation. But thanks Scotty, i was not sure what that thing of jig did.
Scotty Kilmer, now with pictures, me like
Very informative video, helped me a lot. Thanks
Great video Scotty! Thanks for the info.
What’s up Scotty!!! Thanks for all the amazing and helpful videos!
hello! thanks for watching
I've cleaned and replaced many of these over the years. The best way to clean them is with an ultrasonic cleaner.
Thanks man!!!
@Rob in my case I already have an ultrasonic cleaner , so it makes more sense to clean it, assuming the diaphragm still functions . Even if you didn’t have an ultrasonic, it would still be better to clean it than buy a new one... again assuming the diaphragm and valve works .
Will mass air flow sensor cleaner work

Huge helpful video. I have an 02 Buick rendezvous that has this same issue, might have to replace the EGR valve. Thanks!
Hey Scotty great videos, very informative.
I took my car into the shop yesterday cause the check engine light. They're a really nice shop, good people, and they came to the conclusion that my EGR valve needs to be replaced. They want to charge me 589 dollars to replace. Am I better off replacing it myself or cleaning it myself? Should i ask if it just needs to be cleaned and not replaced? What questions should I ask? Also my car runs very smoothly. Thanks for reading

Also basically the same with a lot of Idle Air Control Valves. My Fords love to gum them up. Take them out spray em out and I usually throw some wd40 in there just for good measure.
the WD40 is why they gum up /facepalm
@@opvask no they gum up because of excessive blow by
Egr valves..... Good for the planet, Bad for the owner......
Martyn Lee also bad for the engine.
EGR should be banned. friggin EPA bs. There is something better out there.
Martyn Lee deisels can get egr delete but I don't understand that
@@Anguish88 im doing that and a repro
Honestly those EGR's are nothing but a stupid piece of crap. Feeding an engine its own poop is NEVER a good thing.

Dear Scotty, next time you get a turbo diesel in, can you do a egr clean video on that one? The TDI models are so much more complicated looking. Thanks
Hey, not to be an armchair coach; but... when you're spraying carb clearner into that thing while it's turned upside down isn't there a risk of getting carb cleaner all over the rubber diaphram, thus deteriorating the integrity of the rubber?
Another epic intro from scotty

you crack me up Scotty..thanks for the info !!!
Great tip. Thanks Scotty!
thanks scotty my car would not idle that fixed it thanks
EGR valves are no good for a 90s model F150. You also have to breakdown the throttle body and clean out the ports where the EGR returns the gases. Carbon builds up in the ports and clogs.
Buen video para limpiar la EGR saludos desde México
i have that same engine in my Toyota, thanks for the video Scotty
i got a new EGR valve and i tested it to make sure it works and doesnt leak and it checks out fine. when i hook up the vacuum hose to it, my truck starts misfiring. when i unhook it, it runs fine. only code i am getting is knock sensor. any ideas? should i change my knock sensor?
i think nowadays most cars w/ LEV and ULEV with variable valve timing don't use EGR. VVT controls enough valve overlap that the exhaust reenters into intake to fight NOx.
Thank you. This is true. I learned something here after investigating. This may be news to many.
Thanks for explaining how a Exhaust Gas Re circulation Valve (EGR) works and also posting the diagrams of it.
Shame the video applies only to EGR's from over twenty years ago,not relevant on anything even remotely modern with electronic egrs, those old mechanical egrs are cheap to replace anyway and determined by how much build up you encounter if you don't clean the orifices to and from, including any fitted cooler you could still be left with a fault regardless.
This is why Scotty is waayyyyyy better than ChrisFix. Scotty doesn’t take the time to edit every single detail of a video that ends up being 12 fuckin minutes long.. Scotty gets to the point and puts it in a way to understand fast
Important for good EGR flow. Keep the environment clean! Never miss a video.
economic driving skills are a lot more important than egr valve.
i make sure my egr valve is clean by cleaning it with every oilchange but i drive like a fuckin maniac racing from stop light to stop light. my gas pedal has only 2 modes: on and off. +1 for keeping the environment clean #greenearth #dontpollute #itrusttheEPA #dieselgate
Ozzstar mine stays clean by blanking the bloody thing off.
That is like saying you can eat led paint because a led injection from a bullet is more dangerous.
You sir, are a fucking idiot.
Best thing to do is block that off with a thin piece of metal, that way the exhaust and carbon doesn't get in there to stop it up.
Yes, thanks for that.
Scotty is truly the best at what he does... his explanations of things make u feel like damn I should've already known that haha
Number one Scotty, thanks man
Should use a penetrating fluid such as PB Blaster on the threads to get the EGR off instead of WD 40.
PB blaster is great... liquid wrench is as well
What?? PB Blaster and WD40 were designed to do two different things. PB Blaster in a corrosive that eats rust and is also a lubricant. WD40 is a cleaner, degreaser and protectant; not a lubricant and is crap compared to Zep, Liquid Wrench and PB Blaster.
@@dennisrandall9698 yeah, probably why he said to use it to break rusted bolts and nuts free....did you use your brain on this reply? Or did you.....Nvm obviously you're not using your brain
I've cleaned my egr valve about 3 times, replaced it with a new one, checked all lines, and my car still runs better with it unplugged
. Okay but if you bypass the egr valve won't the engine light come on ? The reason I'm asking is because my former mechanic sold me a 1995 Toyota Camry and the engine light would come on when the weather was hot but it would go off by itself when the weather was cool I found out that I had a trouble code 71 egr related I cleaned the egr valve and the code didn't go away I went underneath the car to look for the egr vsv solenoid valve and noticed that one of the little vacuum hoses was discontinued purposely my former mechanic had done a bypass on the egr and not only that the other two little vacuum hoses that are connected to the vsv valve were switched I found this out after looking at the Haynes repair manual to find out the proper location for each hoses so I reconnected the 3 little vacuum hoses in their proper place and the engine light issue was fixed . That is why I'm asking this question because I'm thinking if my engine will run better if I bypass the egr valve it might be worth doing it I can always reconnect the hoses back in their proper place when the time comes to smog the car.
