Fabricating the T56 Transmission Mount for my LS Swap Datsun Ep. 11

- Опубликовано: 29 май 2020
- Today, I'm installing the T56 Super Magnum 6 Speed Manual transmission to my LS3 crate engine. I work through the flywheel, clutch installation, get the transmission mated up, and fabricate a custom transmission mount to get it into my Datsun 280z.

Huge hurdles you're overcoming! Good to see someone using good ole ratchets and not impact drivers to "throw" everything together. Keep up the good work!
Always have preferred hand tools, just a lot more satisfying I guess!
The crossmemeber turned out slick!
Love the way you stay positive and work to solve the issues that arise during your build. You've got a great attitude, and your project is going to be something you can really be proud of once you get it "done".
There may have been some off camera cursing, throwing, and breaking things, but it didn't change the fact that it needed to get done to move onto the next stage! It's challenging staying optimistic with the trend for this car being 2 steps back for each step forward, but I'm thrilled seeing legitimate progress being made
Always dry fit the engine, trany and clutch assembly out of the car so you don't have to struggle as much what final installing. Doesn't hurt to have a tranny jack if you have space below.
I cant wait too see this thing when its finally done. A datsun 280z is my dream project car. Love your videos man. Keep up the great work.
Thank you so much! It's awesome watching things come together
Really good editing and video you should make some more videos
Hey thanks! I'm hoping to get back into it soon. Ive had some family medical things that took me out of the shop way longer than anticipated
Hey. Found your post on Reddit at the start of this year and subscribed but have just got round to watching it. Really enjoing the content and thanks for being honest about the bits you're struggling with, really good to see!
Im glad you had the chance to check out the build, welcome! I thnk it's really important to share the setbacks and problem solving parts of it. This project in particular has gone anything but smoothly, why hide that?
@@GrindhousePerformance Looks like you're doing a decent job. It's refreshing to see people not trying to hide that anyway, certainly for all of us looking to pick up with and get on with our own projects.
On point.
Hey thanks! 👍
Awesome stuff! That transmission is sweet!!!
Thanks man! Its It's a great combination for the build I think!
The leg Jack!!! 😅
Works every time LOL
Just subscribed! Love the content
Thank you so much! Welcome to the channel!
thanks for the video! keep it up.
Hey thanks Cody!
Just subscribe thank been looking for a dependable LS 280z series you rock
Welcome to my channel, glad to have you find us!
Waitin on an update!
Aiming to get the next update live on Saturday!
I just started watching. What you’ve done here is impressive!! What body kit did you use. It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for.
Hey thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying the build series. The body kit is the 280YZ kit from Ztrix Cars with integrated headlight buckets. I'm using a Coffey style air dam for the front, also from Ztrix.
legday, lol nice work mon
Excellent job, I like it. What is the torque you used for the transmission for bellhousing clutch and bellhousing clutch to the engine? His help would be grateful! Congratulations!
I don't exactly remember the sequence, I followed what the provided kit instructions called for
Do you know which t56 I would need for a lm7 and what parts to mate them I’m kind of confused on the different types of t56s?
I can't say I do for sure, I'm sorry! Good luck!
For this to work, which version of the tremec magnum t56 would be best?
The one I got was directly from GM Performance, but its loosely equivalent to an F Body's (with a few internal upgrades). You can probably make a GTO trans work fine as well, the shifter's still pretty far forward in mine. The GTO shifter is a little further back but a little higher. Apex Engineered makes a trans mount now for LS S30's and would be good to ask which units fit their mounts best if you're not wanting to fab one up
Nice! What rear diff are you guys using?
Thanks! Im using an R200 from an R33 GTR 👍
Is that the Eastwood welder you're TIGing with? How do you like it and what model is it? I'm looking for a bigger MIG or possible a MP welder.
Honestly I've been really happy with it and I've owned it for like 7 years now. It does get really hot doing the thick stuff, but any complaints I've had over time turned out to be user error. I did upgrade the pedal, and I use a FUPA12 cup most of the time
@@GrindhousePerformance I've had my Eastwood Mig 135 for about 5 years or so, and it's done well for body work (off an extension cord since I don't have any outlets in my garage), but I have a rear end to narrow, and some work on the frame I'd like to do later. Is yours the straight TIG or a Multiprocess?
What did you set the transmission angle to in relation to the pinion angle?
The driveshaft exits the transmission at a 1.5 degree down turn, then into the differential at a 1.5 degree up turn
Bad ass. I’m in the beginning stages of my dads 240z rebuild. I have a question.
Was the trans tunnel modified to fit that t56? Or is she just really snug
Hey thanks! I had modified the tunnel for a different trans before installing the T56... a lot of years ago. If I remember correctly there were two pairs of reasonably thick brackets that hung in the tunnel for the original trans that needed to be cut out, then a new hole needed to be cut for the shifter. Im not sure if the t56 would line up with the factory hole for the shifter since I'd previously removed the sheet metal there. I had also hammered out the tunnel previously in sections, but the t56 is more compact than the Mustang trans I had stuffed in there. 👍
@@GrindhousePerformance I’m in no hurry to build this. She’s been sitting for 42 years. She’s in great shape and currently have her on a home built rotisserie. I have t3 suspension and really want to go w a 383 and a T56. If I can fit the tranny w out mods to tunnel great. Also I just discovered aTKO5 speed that would fit well. I think your build is great and can’t wait to see when done. Keep up the great work. Thanks for reply.
What is your plan for the master cylinder set up? I’m currently working on the exact same thing but it was an automatic car to begin with.
I'm pretty sure I picked up a tilton 3/4 master for the t56 👍
GrindhousePE would you happen to have a part number? I did a google search and there’s quite a few choices that come up.
Tilton 454-75-750U is what I ordered. Have not fit to the car yet though!
What torque and angle wrench were you using?
I used a husky pro 39104 👍
What clutch kit did you use ?
I used the Chevrolet Performance T56 installation kit; it included the bell housing, slave cylinder, and an LS7 clutch and flywheel
How much does one of those transmission go for?
It's difficult to answer, prices/availability on these have been fluctuating a lot through covid... 4-5k new w/o bellhousing/clutch assly is pretty typical
Dude I can’t fabricate like that but damn would you be willing to fabricate one for me I’ll of course pay for everything !!!
It would be really difficult to, the floor and chassis has been modified quite a bit so there's a good chance if I just made a copy it would never fit right. Apex engineered sells one now that would be a good solution though for you 👍
