The Bhagavatam was written by Bhagavan Vedavyasa, as mentioned within the text itself. This great scripture consists of 18,000 verses divided into 12 Skandhas (Cantos). The 10th Skandha specifically narrates the life and divine plays of Lord Krishna.
After arranging the Vedas and composing the Mahabharata, Vedavyasa still felt a sense of dissatisfaction. When he shared this feeling with Sage Narada, Narada advised him to compose a work that fully reveals the divine form of the Lord. Following this advice, Vedavyasa meditated deeply and wrote the Bhagavatam.
Vedavyasa first imparted the Bhagavatam to his son, Shuka Maharishi, who later narrated it to King Parikshit. The king, having been cursed by a sage, had renounced all worldly attachments and was observing a fast unto death by the banks of the Ganga. It was at this time that Shuka Maharishi arrived and recited the Bhagavatam to him. A Suta (narrator) present there also listened to the story.
Much later, Shaunakadi sages gathered in Naimisharanya to perform a grand Yajna desiring heavenly pleasures. By chance, the Suta arrived at the Yajna. Recognizing that he had received direct knowledge from Shuka Maharishi, the sages requested him to recount the Bhagavatam, and thus the story was narrated again.
The Bhagavata Mahapurana we have today contains 335 chapters across its 12 Skandhas.
