      Saotome Alto You can say it’s good for anime, but is it really good for the viewer? A classic is mostly a thing that represented yourself/community in a certain time. If you can say that you don’t consider any show this year a classic, then you just consumed the shows without genuinely liking them. Consuming anime for the sake of consuming and nothing else. Watching without having fond memories, just like many people that go to the cinema, watches a movie and totally forget about it after. Finding shows that have a place in your mind afterwards, is rewarding and gives a nice feeling of nostalgia and fulfillment.

    Gigguk, I can understand your perspective on your statement near the end of the video. Anime has changed, for the better and for the worst. Large corporations like Netflix and Amazon are pouring money into the anime industry. But like you said, we don't necessarily have that one defining anime that would represent an entire generation yet alone a year. Because the fandom is now bigger than it used to be. But in my opinion, I think we haven't strayed to far from our roots. For example, 2018 was a great year for anime and for me too. Me and my mother both watched Violet Evergarden together an she loved it. She was invested so much, that she even balled her eyes out from a few episodes. After that she recommended her mother to watch it and she enjoyed it and cried her eyes out too. Introducing my family to something I love and finding out their interested in it has brought us closer. And that's something as anime fans we always wanted. We always wanted everyone to see and enjoy our garden of Eden.

      Psycho pass likely also can sit as a classic. But graphics will age badly since it looks so digitally made and tech focused.

    Your observation at the end of the video is very thought-provoking. I believe the reason why you feel this way is because it’s harder to identify the masterpiece when it is amongst high quality shows, and there are no obvious standouts in the crowd. The popularization of anime has resulted in us getting an incessant stream of unique IPs every season to accommodate viewers’ divergent tastes, but this has the effect of lessening the perceived impact of a show, since you’re constantly forming positive associations with likeable shows. I don’t believe this is a terrible consequence, in fact, I think more than anything this teaches us to appreciate what we experience and incites us to reflect upon what we observe.
    Another excellent video Garnt!

    • @WAIICRYSTALROSE
      @WAIICRYSTALROSE 5 лет назад +2

      I think some of the issues with finding "The new Classics" Is also episode lengths. Back before popularity, you'd have 24-26 episodes per season. A lot of time to develop characters, stories, philosophies and world building. The exceptional shows would sometimes get a movie and occasionally a second season that would then leave you wanting more. Now a days when you look at series you have 12 episodes, bonus ova's (which promote nothing but extra encounters), multiple seasons that features a new plot/villian but not enough growth, or the one season that's easily forgotten. I agree that there's a high amount of quality being produced now. Maybe it's just that we're getting older and what we have as "Classics" are so embedded into us that we just don't or can't see anything that's comparable to how these early shows touched us back then.

    • @henrytang7025
      @henrytang7025 5 лет назад +1

      This is great for people with niche tastes though, they don't have to wait 5 years for something to come along that blows them away, although the 50+ years of anime should mean that there's something for anyone anyway.

    • @DeuSCaNoN
      @DeuSCaNoN 5 лет назад +1

      Agree 100%. By having anime being this big now we have reached the point where the quality needed to become a masterpiece is just super super high, maybe too high to be realistically reached. However, while it may not be a terrible consequence I know why Gigguk feels melancholic.
      There was a great sense of camaraderie before the mid 2000s of anime where everyone you meet who was an anime fan basically all saw the shows you watched. This created this community that felt very close to each other. It may have been exclusive but I can't blame anyone that has fond nostalgic memories of those years (I do definitely). I think it's not so much about there not being classics anymore, but that by having anime become mainstream, we've lost the sense of community we once had. Anime has now become fractured just like any kind of mainstream media.

    • @waroment2989
      @waroment2989 5 лет назад

      @@WAIICRYSTALROSE That's a good point. Perhaps it can be said that first seasons these days have more of a promotional function than ever before; you watch 12 episodes, you're left on a cliffhanger, and now you can either hope a next season is on the way (and wait for it) or continue the series by reading the source material.

    • @waroment2989
      @waroment2989 5 лет назад

      @@DeuSCaNoN I understand this quite well, I grew up in a time when most around me didn't care for and sometimes even shunned any form of anime. So it's true that at the time, meeting someone who was a fan was a pleasant surprise and oftentimes they were familiar with your favourite shows. However, I really like that we've reached a point where anime is popular enough to be talked about publicly just like any other media, and I'm thankful we get so many amazing series each year because it gives us something to look forward to.

    The real reason we can no longer have a year with a ‘classic’ is probably mostly to do with the constant increase in quality over the years. In those Golden Years, there were really only a handful of shows, and an even smaller number of amazing shows. Those Classics were able to keep people talking because there were much longer stretches of time before “the next big thing in anime” came along. Not to mention many of those shows are longer than the 12-13 episode length seasonal anime have adopted. In a day in age where every season has at least a handful of incredibly well made and enjoyable shows, there is always a new thing to talk about. The fandom is constantly moving forward at such a quick rate that we never leave ourselves time to reflect on the past. We never leave ourselves time to create long lasting fond memories. It’s almost sad to think about. Anime has become mainstream, and continues to grow and provide better and better shows each and every season, but we’ve lost something that used to define anime’s past: Lasting memories.

      To add onto this, I think that it may be a matter of perspective and interest. To someone like me who didn't watch every anime that came out this year, I could look back and say, yeah, those shows I really really liked from this year are going to stick with me forever. When you consume so much content, like Gigguk or any other hardcore anime fan, it becomes more difficult for an anime to leave a lasting impression. However, for a casual viewer like myself, there's not a lot of hopping from show to show with no time to rest in between. I'm certain that in 10 years from now, there'll be shows from 2017 and 2018 that I'll remember very fondly. Also, it's hard to argue that Boku no Hero Academia didn't become a classic - there are so many people across the world who love that show.

    • @TeaReadsSometimes
      @TeaReadsSometimes 5 лет назад +10

      @@atanuchakravarty486 I disagree. It may not be, say Marvel or DC mainstream, but is it still mainstream. Beyond just random non anime youtubers, you have rappers and other artist and famous people who watch it now. Or at least are open about it. A few years ago In my mcjrotc, almost everyone watched anime. MHA and others are what's popular, sure. But anime as a whole can no longer be called a niche and mha and them are still anime. People are still watching an anime, popular or not, which will inevitably lead to more shows that they watch.

    Banana Fish had me crying, laughing, dying on the inside, at the edge of my seat, and at the very end of it: my mouth hanging open in disbelief. Why can't one of the most traumatized humans in fiction ever just have happiness? Why? Why must you do this world?

      The original manga series is very old (finished 25 years ago) so I don’t expect everyone to know what would happen to these men in anime. It was very famous back in old time when gay theme is still rare. I would like to say lots of Asian fujoshi watch this anime knowing all the plot and still get attached.

    between violet evergarden, after the rain and a place further than the universe, i had so many comfy calm tea sessions. i really learned the value of having something to look forward to all day, waiting for it to get dark, and brewing up your tea and fetching whichever snacks you'd saved or bought for just that episode. and then, just relax entirely for 20 minutes. rest of the year didnt really have any tea-worthy shows, but winter alone made it the best year yet for me

    For me my number one show of the year was Banana Fish. Not just for the relationship but for the portrayal of abuse and hardships, showing sometimes in the end even if life feels better because you have people on your side and you've created happy memories, your past always can catch up with you. It doesn't sugarcoat depression and abuse rather than showing it in it's most revealing and disturbing form, I could feel ash's pain and I grieved his hardships along with him. I love this show with all my heart and the meaning truly resonated with me. I'd reccomend this a watch to anyone who watches anime because in my mind it is a masterpiece.

  • @LaMereACaniche

    I'd argue that one of the reasons classics have become much more rare is because the general quality of anime have really gone up. What if we only got violet evergarden, a place further than the universe or (insert really good show here) amidst a pile of trash? Would they then be regarded as classics?

    • @Pilchowski01
      @Pilchowski01 5 лет назад +81

      This is exactly my view. It's the 'Mona Lisa' effect: they're not classics because 'they are classics', they're classics because it they were some of the few shows out in the West and everyone in the small anime community was talking about it.

Honestly, a part of me didn’t think that Banana Fish would get some of the attention that I personally think it deserves, especially from a big anime reviewer in the anime community, but just the fact that he did talk about it and didn’t stuff it into the yaoi category just because it has some homoerotic tones in the beginning filled me with so much joy!!!! (And the quick review on Dragon Pilot was awesome too!!!! XD) Congrats Gigguck, welcome to the Banana Fish family.

      @meowmeowchan1724 5 лет назад +13

      Ibrahim Al-Otaibi If that’s how you feel just because there’s a gay relationship at the center of it, that’s your opinion. But please let correct you on one thing, Banana Fish is not a yaoi, a yaoi is an anime that centers in the sexual and physical relationships between two men. Nothing like this happens in Banana Fish, unless you want to count the times Ash has been raped and sexually abused. Banana Fish is much closer to a shonen-ai, a genre of anime that centers around the emotional side of a romantic relationship between two men.But really, Banana Fish isn’t any of these two genres, it just has some shonen-ai tones more than anything. If you want to be digested at an anime because it’s “gay” that’s your opinion, I’m NOT trying to change it. Just use your terms correctly, because “yaoi” and “shonen-ai” and “dark gritty action mystery” and all very separate distinct genres.

This is because the ocean itself is regarded as a symbol for "voyage into the unknown" in literature. notice that each episode ending is the character of focus walking down the beach, that is because they are experiencing immense change in their lives at the moment of that episode, and the ocean symbolizes their unknown and unstable future (such as adolescence makes the world seem).

  • @NOGINT
    @NOGINT 5 лет назад +124

    You'll never get that feeling of "instant-classic" in the modern anime climate, not unless we get a terrible season where 1 or 2 great shows can overwhelm our perspective. The older shows that we acknowledge to be classics stood out as classics because they were incredible shows that completely dominated otherwise standard-grade periods of time. In 2018, we got classic after classic after classic. If you were to imagine Megalobox, Violet Evergarden, a Place Further than the Universe or a few other shows from 2018 standing by themselves in a year without (m)any other stand-outs, I bet you can see yourself seeing them as classics.
    These shows are of a quality that deserves the reputation that was given to those old classics, but...it's kind of like that idea the Incredibles plays around with. "And when everybody's super...no one will be." These shows are all classics, they just seem less like it because their shockwaves couldn't be as great when they were all interfering with each other's. When those older classics landed, their shockwaves weren't nearly as interferred with.

    • @MercenaryX10A
      @MercenaryX10A 5 лет назад +14

      I think that what defines a show as "classic" was never its popularity or quality, but it's universality.
      And there is no universality in the anime community anymore.

      I don't understand what you mean by universality. Are you referring to titles that helped to define and popularize certain genres in anime? If that it is the case I agree. But I also think nostalgia plays a big role in what is defined as classic. Give these shows another 10 to 15 years and I think that some of them might be considered ones too.

    In regards to your 'final word' I do agree with the fact that anime has really strayed from the 'classical' 'seasonal shows' that dominated our hearts when they aired, but I would never say that it is anything other than a benefit. I like to think of these new seasons straying from the classics as a growth in the community. When I think back to when there were only a couple of good 'classic' shows airing as you listed that were extremely popular like evangelion, gurann lagann, etc, I see it as a sort of disadvantage as the community would only stretch their minds to what was the 'norm'. Here in 2018 we got sooooo much new shows that allowed us socially to delve into the season with a plethora of waifus, husbandos, great fight scenes, incest shows, etc. I feel the past was something that in fact did inspire the community to begin to talk about the future, but now with so much conversations about all the new ideas and concepts found in contemporary shows, I see is as a pure benefit for this community.
    Today with my current friends group we are almost never talking about a single show (except me cuz I like favourites). We talk about everything about the season, not just the best show of the season. Not just the classic 'norm' of the season.

      On the one hand, some "classics" became such because they didn't have good competition, so this is certainly a benefit. On the other, some "classics" became such because of how profound they were. 2011 may have had a lot of anime that I followed at once (even though 2018 had more anime, the number I could watch hasn't increased much), but it did have Madoka Magica, which was one of the most uniquely-written/directed shows I've ever seen. It took Japan and the otaku anime community by storm, even spilling into the mainstream without being broadcast in the West. It's stuff like that that jumps out and says "It'll be hard to forget about me" because it isn't just a great version of what it looked like. It was a great version of something nothing else looked like.
      That defines a "classic" to me.

      @@Junosensei But was it unique because it was superior or was it superior because it was unique? To put it another way, would it have had that same impact if it aired alongside other shows with the same high standard of quality? If yes, which is certainly possible, then fantastic, a truly outstanding masterpiece can indeed occur, but wishing for only shows of that high caliber is folly, because if every show is that good, none of them can stand out like that. That's where we are now, and I for one love it. More good stuff is by definition an improvement.
      That said, I can't speak about Madoka specifically since I never watched it. Not a huge Magical Girl fan and call me a sucker, but I hate shows with super dark, psychological endings. So based on how my brother tried to sell it to me, I gave it a hard pass. That's not why I watch anime, especially not back then, but even so I have nothing but respect for well crafted art. I'll trust your judgement on whether or not any show I haven't seen is a masterpiece or a "classic", at least until I verify it myself.

      Agreed. To go out of the anime industry plenty of films and Tv shows are now classics but were no where near the status when they were first released. Even anime that was great on its own merit like Bebop had the huge advantage of being great because many of the shows surrounding it were either good, bad, or just passing the minimum. With 2018 being the year almost saturated with great shows it’s harder to see which ones, if any, will be that year’s defining anime or even join the pantheon of “one of the greatest anime ever” period.

    I'm not a fan of Yaoi but i Just went on and watched banana fish because I heard it was really good. I didn't have much expectations for it but Damn; it was brilliant. After I finished it I had to sit for like an hour in bed and just let it all sink in, and I just kept thinking about it for the rest of the week. It's been a while since an anime got to me on such an emotional level but this one just kept haunting me. Definitely on my top 5 anime of all time or even higher, and AOTY no doubt. The characters are so beautifully written in such a raw realistic way. The plot was really good, always keeping you on edge, the way they handled the mature themes was phenomenal and the whole setting made it one hell of a rollercoaster. My feelings sadly didn't make it out alive but it was worth it. Would definitely recommend it. For those who are still considering wether to watch it or not: Don't judge something before you watch it, and Let your thoughts be only yours and not just a copy of other people's opinions.
