- EQ or compression first?
With the ability to use many plugins in whatever order we want, endless possibilities have been opened up! Unfortunately, this also causes some stress and worry that we are not using plugins in the right order. I think it's best to try and ask yourself what you want to achieve with the sound, what's the end goal? and then think about the best tools to get you there.
This is where I'm supposed to make an analogy about building a house and starting with the foundation first then the walls then the roof etc...but let's not waste any time :)

Another great video from you ❤️💯
Great video great explanation ✌👍👍
Great video if you haven’t access to a compressor with side chain filter.
Thx FAMILY
Channel after channel of trying to learn this stuff. You are the only one that gives us a detailed WHY and not just a WHAT. I swear everyone else’s content is just “do this and you’ll get this” and I’d never really utilize it. Your channel is exactly what I’ve been looking for. Thank you so mucchhhhh
Best mastering chain:
1.soundgoodizer 2.soundgoodizer
3.soundgoodizer 4.soundgoodizer
Patcher with a LOT o' soundgoodizers
Exit Strategies I’ll let my right hand man, mixcentric, handle that
How about OTT? Ruins the sound pretty much the same way if you crank everything to much and remove midrange lol.
soundgoddizer overrated ott will win
Dmans dnagles deidölz How do YOU use OTT?
There are a lot of tutorials that explain the "basics". Then there are tutorials that explain really advanced concepts. This tutorial hits that hard-to-reach middle spot that most RUclips tutorial-makers dream of hitting. Great video
well said Nate, that made perfect sense to me.
Exactly
Stop on
That's it!
exactly
3 years in. still just twisting knobs in compressors and hope for the best.
5 years and I do the exact same thing. Changing the knee knob like “ooh what does this one do” 😂
@@chidzhustle3570 It's honestly the way to get the best results. Yes, there are some guidelines that may help you, but if it sounds proper, then who cares if you know what you've actually done with the knobs ;)
Get a drum track and run it into a compressor. Set threshold as high as possible, set ratio to max, set attack to minimum, set release to min, set make-up gain to 0. Start the drums rolling. Bring the threshold slowly all the way down and listen to what it does when it starts hitting the peaks and when it gets into the body of the sound. Leave the threshold low and slowly increase the attack. Listen how it lets more and more of the hits of the drums through. Dial back the attack and then slowly increase the release. Listen to how you can time it to the drum beat. Now experiment with less extreme settings.
The hope for the best part is so relatable 😂
Mixing is and will always be your own taste bro
ive literally learned something from every video ive watched from you, what a lad.
Nice! Glad to be of help :)
me too, the man is a God send :)
I agree! Also I cancelled my netflix a little while back so now I guess I binge watch music production videos!!
Ahhh, Demon got me!
All Kinds you getting all kinds of gain
at this point you are probably tho only youtuber who i trust with teaching production. good techniques, very good teaching
check firewalk this guy is also a great producer
Very true💯
@@libEluLLah Agreed. Simon Servida knows what he is talking about
Check busy works beats
He needs your trust thank you. 😅
In 10 minutes you have taught me more about EQ and compression than most other videos over and hour long have done. Thanks so much.
Thank you, I'm so glad it helped. I might make a specific video about EQ and Compression
I subscribe to a lot of mixing channels, and I keep up with a lot of them rather densely, and I have to say - you're is easily the best in terms of useful information. I've been mixing and mastering now for about 15 years, and I learn from this channel rather frequently.
I didnt know that a compression of the low end will make my highs reduced aswell!! This is a gamechanger! Thank you so much! 🙏
The most amazing thing is how well the original guitar track was played. That was flawless. Precise and crisp.
This is really helpful.. ive been doing EQ>Comp... now ill do EQ>Comp>EQ
Seriously, I must give you mad props. Your videos are always to the point, there is a clear message, you use proper terms but often clarify them, you repeat the important stuff, you speak clearly in proper English, you show both yourself and the DAW and you don't just show how to do stuff, but also why. I've been using FL since version 6, but I was always too lazy to look for tutorials, mainly because I am impatient, but also because there is a lot of crap tutorials out there, and it's hard to look for new knowledge when you don't know what you are missing. I am clearly seeing now that watching any of your videos will not be a waste of time and I will always learn something, even though I'm experienced. Thanks for sharing!
Nice. Cheers!
This is the first video I've found on here that hasn't confused the absolute shite out of me. Thank you! hit a major breakthrough in mixing my beats finally.
Understanding how my tools work to shape my sound is becoming more clear thanks to you.
This guys Chanel is the reason you don’t need to go to university 😂😂
TBH
At some point, someone has to go to school for the real knowledge though. Not everyone can get a degree from RUclips.
You shouldn't limit your knowledge to just youtube
TheChosenOne That’s a very good point. I wasted at least 4 years watching people on RUclips who didn’t really know what they were talking about and I developed those peoples bad habits. In the mix is definitely a good one to watch but I still recommend an actual good education over RUclips. Good info here but a lot of the time it’s bro science
@@matrixate I agree that a lot of what you're refering to as the "real knowledge" isn't totally accessible on RUclips, but that information IS out there on the internet if you know where to look.
This dude is a life saver.
subtractive EQ+Compression+Additive EQ that is the best way working for me also for years
My goodness this is so helpful. Something I wouldn't normally think about
That part where you time yourself explaining EQ and compression is funny and enjoyable as an edit. I like how much care you put into these videos.
Beautiful explanation of how EQ and compression work together.
"As long as you got a vision in your head and you're following your ears, you'll be absolutely fine."
Really solid advice there and great video!
So far, this channel has helped me a lot as I slowly teach myself about music production and how to use compression. I'm here because I know that compression cannot do it alone in the mix and I'm glad that I get to take away almost every information you have given us here about EQ. I adapt most of your practices on how to use them and I'm really happy to be here! Thank you very very much!
Complex trechnical concepts made easy. Thank you for the detailed end easy to understand explanations.
Really enjoyed this video. Very well thought out, and I love you visually demonstrated what you were doing with the NOVA to show the EQ/Compression effect.
As I learn more about DAW, everytime the doubt I have is different. Then I always come back to this channel to laern something new or make sure if I get it right. Great job!!
Wow! Incredible value! Never thought about WHICH frequencys are triggering my compressor!
snap ;)
I was always convinced I needed to use compression first, but I found that sometimes (mainly when things weren't really recorded properly) I couldn't get it it to work how I wanted it to: it would react to peaks in frequency ranges where I didn't want it to do so. Game changer when I started using eq first in these kinds of situations.
I like the explaining using the term, 'energy', Well thought out!
Surfer EQ is another gem 💎
Thank you for this tutorial. I came to RUclips looking for an answer to a specific question I had, and you answered it perfectly.
If I could make one suggestion, I would’ve loved to hear six or seven seconds of the original mix, and then six or seven seconds of your what it sounded like after you made those changes. Just to get a better understanding of the difference that you made. Thanks again.
Yo been watching your vids for a minute and gotta say, you explain things in a way anyone can understand, thank you for taking the time to explain these concepts!
I've been watching you endlessly sir. You are such a help to the community. Thank you very much!!
How to master using izotope ozone 8 and with other izotope plugins?(make a video on it?)
Same here pls make a video on ozone 8 #inthemix
Izotope ozone 8 is very popular here in India FL user .pls make a video on it.
yall coming from the free ozone elements copy? :D
Yeah we all just got Ozone 8 E for a dollar! A tutorial would be neat but this plugin is fairly simple to use...
What you feed the compression will drive it.
I think I like to use EQ control first to tame the low end.
Maybe some EQ after compressor to polish the highs and clarity
in some cases the *bass* of the guitar in a mix would not be listened in this case we don't need a to add bass with EQ, but there might be parts of a song where we need that low end and we could automate or sidechain to raise the bass. Really nice tutorial learned something!
You're absolutely right Boris, all depends on the context of the mix :)
You take care of each n every fine detail in mix... thanks for this.... nice topic to discuss
I love the way you say things. Very thoughtful and concise. keep up the great work!
HI @In The Mix love your vidoes! I learn so much! QUESTION: How about you send the sound to a second channel with the EQ on it, and use that as a Sidechain for the compressor, so you get the range of the original sound, but it's still only triggered by the mid-low frequencies.
Smart idea! I’m not actually quite sure of why he didn’t also suggest this. However, one thing he mentioned was that with a more balanced, brighter sound, it might fit into the mix better.
If you have a sound that already sounds great, but need to compress it in a balanced way, definitely go ahead and try this. Great insight!
Again, the best teacher Ive seen around
Big thumbs up to you my friend, Thank you. You explain everything that needs to be explained in an excellent manner, and you have maintained the open mind of the student at the same time which is what good teachers do.
"It depends on each track but that won't help anyone" yeah, people that are new or confused about what they should do have problems because they (most of the time) can't identify what the track needs, having a method that works most of the time (and tweaking when needed) is better than doing everything from scratch, wasting a lot of time in the process.
Very good video buddy, keep it on :D
Thank you, I thought I'd add that line in because I often hear people brush off questions like that "well it depends..."... it's not very helpful is it? :)
Perfect yet again.🙌🏼
I watch alot of tutorials. Your's are by far the best. Phenomenol work 🙏
It depends! If you want to "make" the sound, use eq later, eventually.
But if u have to reduce peaks defenitly use eq first!.
Mostly i would just use ew first tbh.
Finally something really useful and coherent. Great vid man! ✌🏼
How can u make this things so simple to understand?!! Thanks man. U r helping me a lot with all your videos!
hey man, your channel is awesome and this video just blew my mind... I just starting with mixing so this is invaluable
Beautifully explained!! Thanks
Hi brother, i hope you doing well. My name is Quake i have been following your youtube videos about Fl Studio. Your video lessons have been so much helpful to me and we appreciate so much what you 've been doing helping millions of people all around the globe. May God bless you all your brother. So anyway would like to ask; would you please make a video for Maximus Compressor?
The same like what you've been doing to the previous videos thanks
You explain things so simple. Many thanks.
As others have commented, you have found a niche, exemplified by THIS video, where U show not only the why, the how and the what, but provide the ‘because’. At the root of this, your method of EQ/comp/EQ is really a subjective opinion, not that I disagree, but you had topped it off with the a healthy dose of ‘Because’. You explained, and showed the facts in a pleasant, non-authoritarian manor.
Tho I already practice what you are teaching here regularly, I did it because my ears told me to and I understand how compression works. My point is, even tho none of this was new news for me, seeing the facts in your presentation has helped me visualize the processes in my head better than I already had.
Nice job mate & thank you!
Well put. Get out of my head! Cheers!
This was an excellent explanation. Thank you
You also can use multiband compressor as fabfilter pro mb and choose the frequency range and compress only that part
Could you do without the subtractive EQ before the compressor by using a multi-band compressor instead? Just compress the frequencies that you want compressed and EQ (add and/or subtract) after the multi-band compressor?
No, even if you're feeding a multiband you still want to remove the nasties first. The multiband might eliminate the post-compressor EQ depending on a bunch of things.
Try it?!
Would also love video content on multiband compression (Maximus, OTT, etc). Thanks again for all your hard work.
Absolutely well done AND well shown !
nice tutorials, always on point, very useful and pretty easy to understand. Love your channel.
Thank you very much :)
thanks bro u really helped me a lot I've came a long way from where I started much respect
Very insightful. Thank you for the clarity.
To be honest, the trick you mentioned in the of the video, I personally prefer to use a multiband compression or multiband distotion to do the job. I think, technically speaking, it does not make sense to use a general compression to do that.
Excellent tutorial. Thanks bud.
Excellent instruction. Many thanks
GREAT TUTORIAL. Super useful to me. Thank you man!!!
This channel is gold ;) !
Sick advice dude. Thank you!
This was so valuable information that I had to watch it again!
Thank you so much for making these tutorials they are great!
Great explanation! Thanks.
Nicely done, thanks!
Great videos bro. Love it
This makes perfect sense, and I'll be experimenting with subtractive/compression/additive EQ on my mixes. Great tutorial. Thanks!
I better understand both compression and mixing as a whole after watching this
Great info in this video - thanks!
another GREAT video! Thank you
This is very helpful, very detailed and nicely explained yo
Great video man keep it up
Yeah i love it so much
That trick with nova 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Spot-on, as per usual!✌️
Thank you. Instructions very clear. :)
So compress everything equally and then use the Eq to pull up or down the frequencies you want to highlight....I knew I was on the right track... Good video👍🏾....
Thanks a lot Michel for a great explanation.. :D
Great advice here!
thanks, bro. nice tutorials
I've been doing it properly all these years by sheer luck aha Well, minus the additive EQ...
Hello Miavono (in the mix) I am a new sound recordist (dialogue & interview) in several documentary films in East Africa,
I'm so fond of your work in the sound professions with fl studio, because you do them very well in a very professional way
I would like to suggest that you help us subscribe to learn tutorials, just show us how you make your own tutorial and how you edit your own voice in your tutorial. I hope it will help me a lot is the others. personally I would be very proud to show you a piece of interviews that I would apply effects is advice you give us that will be useful
Thank you man!
How about multiband compressor ?
I think this guy could do a great explanation of Maximus...
1:29 You actually timed it.
AHA AHAHA
One reason to subscribe.
Wait... What...??? I thought only the peaks are being compressed when it passes above the threshold. But if not, what's the point of using compression then...??? I could just cut the peaks using an EQ. 🤔🤔🤔
because if you just eq then ur bringing down everything that comes with that frequency instead of just the peak.
Cutting a frequency in EQ may not necessarily reduce the amplitude of the overall signal - in fact, it could sometimes increase the amplitude due to phasing issues.
Try playing a sub bass at 0.0dB and sweeping a high pass filter - you'll find that often it'll go way above 0.0dB, even though the filter is subtractive.
@@rynabuns very true
hear this.. if you have a drumtrack and compress.... and assume you have it only playing deep bassy kicks.... and ultrahigh highhat. so when now one highhat is sitting there alone, but the other is at same time with kick.... then if they are at same time Peak is double so big, as when alone! means one time you have MOORE compression applied, cause gooing much higher ABOVE treshold! So it cumulates .. so if there is ONE PART in the whole Drumtrack wich has tooo much energy, like a way to bassbosted kickdrum, then....: it will set the OVERALL VOLUME HIGHER, namely TOO High. and all the highhats will be much more compressed than when no Kick hits...... So you principially SHOULD just eq firs befrore compressing.. Ever!! This is same for guitar, or whaterver track, or whole mix.. if there is some strong bassy frequence, it Triggers the OVERALL Sound to be REDUCED stronger then if you use the BALANCED Signal. Peace
Great Vid! 👍🏿
Thanks man!
another great video man love all your videos.. could you do one about drums? i understand there is not one technique for all drums, but i'm am have some trouble when mixing drums. do i assign my drums to a bus only? should i compress before the bus? should i keep them routed to the master as well as a bus? should i route my bus to a bus for parallel compression ? or should i get a bus to the middle of nowhere and just give up ?😭 sorry for all the questions but i would appropriate a video on this.
Yeah I definitely need to make another drum video
lol i saw that take a bus pun coming when i read your comment
In The Mix and I definitely need to find your other one.. what is it called ?
LaserChair I spent two years crafting that joke as well 😭😭
another great lesson . thank you :)
I think music producer doesn't need mixing because it will reduce creativity to making music
Thanks you so much 🙏 i like your videos 😊🧡
This is probably the same question that brought multiband compression into the world haha.
nicely done
That was about the best demostration of the effect of the EQ on the compressor input I've ever seen!
That said, that's where multiband compressors shine - or even better, the FIR compressor in the Reaper suite
Interesting way to look at it. I will give this a try. Do you think it works better than multi band comp?
