  • You don't just want a review of the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas SE. You want the good, the bad, and the mediocre. All from the perspective of a woman, and in this case, a short lady. Trust me - that matters!

    I think this might be the first RUclips comment I’ve ever posted, but this was a very refreshing review! Instead of just reading off a spec sheet, you actually gave opinions. I really appreciate that, and I wish more automotive reviews were as frank as yours. Excellent job! 👍

    I have a 19 atlas, I'm 6'7" tall, I love it! It's the premium model, has all the bells and whistles! My wife is about 5'6 and does complain a little about the size, her depth perception is off due to the lg hood, and parking is an issue with her as well, but overall she too loves it! We drove , 3 explorers and ultimately settled on the atlas! The mpg could be better but an average of 19.5 is far better than her accord and of course my 2010 f-150. We give it a 9 out of 10 rating!

    Fadra,
    Nice review. However, I'm 6'7" and there are so very few vehicles that I can operate without experiencing physical distress. The Atlas is probably the most comfortable vehicle on the market today for folks my size. Your review was spot on! Excellent analysis and very fair. I was particularly interested in seeing your review because I feel that women should do more review of cars because my understanding is that women predominately make the buying decisions when it comes to automobiles.

    3 months in. Only 5800 miles. Been using it mostly for trips (it's one of 4 cars I have). Trip one was from home to Wisconsin. About 1400 miles round trip. Then to Boston, another 1600 miles. Then to Central and south eastern Tennessee, about 1600 miles. I'm still holding off on my pros and cons till I get some more in-town driving but In Nov, going to drive down to Gulf Port MS then western TN, KY, then back home, Expect at least 2500 miles on that trip. It's a nice long haul driver with exception of the small fuel tank. Sorry but 18 gal tank on a SUV this IMO is a DEFECT. My MPG has been 27 at best (UP of Mich) and running 80+mph on freeway, 24mpg. Avg has been 25.7 over all. Power is acceptable but nothing like my 283hp minivan (sorry but the Chrysler Penastar motor just has more get up and get then the boring V6 from VW but it's acceptable) The FCW and ACC are great. One of the BEST features on the car. The lane guidance needs some tweaking. In the UP of Michigan, seems the person painting the white edge lines was falling asleep every 100 yards or so and smeared the paint toward the inside of the road. So, the VW would try to "adjust" every time by pulling to the left. A couple of times, it felt like I was going to end up in on coming traffic.
    At this point my only issue is wheels/tires. I opted for the nice black 20 inch wheels. But after the 1st trip, one felt out of balance. VW Re-balanced it for me. 2nd trip, it wasn't bad. seemed to be fixed but not perfect. Drove on some very very smooth roads but could feel a little shaking. 3rd trip to TN. Noticed on the way home, was back to like day one. Took it in, was told weight fell off. They fixed it no charge "because it was the one we fixed before, we are not charging you". Like hell you would charge me anyway. This car has a out of balance feel to it as of day one and it's still not right, or perfect. It's not the nature of the beast ether. I have a 09 Jeep Liberty with 33's, lifted and lots of extra "armor" on it. It does not "vibrate" or feel out of balance at 80mph. SO, IMO, a $50k car should be as smooth as a catfishes skin when it's going down the road at any speed. My 2013 Passat TDi SEL Pre never felt that way at any speed. The faster you went, the smoother it got.
    Don't get me wrong, we love the car even with it's known personality issues (trans shifting isn't the best imo) but wonder if anyone else has had the wheel balance issues with the 20 inch black wheels. Car is the platinum grey with black/brown leather interior. I have the 2019 SEL Pre.

    As a 6’5” guy, I find my Atlas to be a good size. My 5’3” has never tried to drive it as she is very loyal to her Subaru Forester. I happen to be a disabled Vet with a prosthesis for a left leg. While I can walk using crutches, I like having my wheelchair with me. The dealership removed the captain’s chair from behind the driver’s seat which allows me to stow my wheelchair there. I purchased my Atlas in Jan of 2020 and, with the exception of a the auto “Start-Stop”, I really like the vehicle. One big thing that bothers me is the Owner’s Manual. It seems like every topic requires the jumping between multiple pages. BTW: I have the SEL trim level .

      I agree with your assessment of it being “soft.” The only adjustment is in the drive mode. By putting it in Sport mode, you’ll tighten things up a bit but usually it’ll cost you in gas mileage.

    Can you review the 2019 VW Jetta? I recently got the 2019 VW Atlas and I LOVE it. Especially the third row, it definitely gives other manufacturers a run for their money. I don't really mind having leatherette seating surfaces especially seeing as how eco friendly it is. You can adjust most of the lighting, like the led strips that are behind the center of the dash (from side to side) and in the doors and fee area.

    I test drove a 2019 Atlas a couple of weeks ago in the SEL with 2nd row Captains chairs. Loved the size of the vehicle, the legroom, and the good exceleration of the V-6 engine. Also loved the warranty. What I didn’t like was the gas mileage especially when I can get a fairly comparable size vehicle in the Honda Pilot with better gas mileage and real leather seating for about the same cost.

    • @Allthingsfadra
      @Allthingsfadra  5 лет назад

      The Atlas has a pretty amazing starting point for price. But you’re right. To get leather, you have to go with the top trim which jacks up the price. It is very spacious and has a good engine but I think you’ll find the gas mileage is all pretty mediocre in this class.

    • @Allthingsfadra
      @Allthingsfadra  5 лет назад +1

      Great question! If you’re looking for a smoother ride, you’ll want 18 inch wheels. If you want better, sportier handling, go for the 20 inch. As for road noise, it comes down to 2 things in my book: car insulation (which you can’t do anything about) and tire tread. If you find you have a lot of road noise at any size, you probably need different tires.

      It depends on what you mean by "better." It's better for animals, that's for sure!! It's a more inexpensive material, not quite as soft, but I would guess it's more durable and easier to keep clean. I still prefer leather.

      Natural engine is more smooth than turbo engine, and also people should take more careful and cost for turbo engine. VW target normal customer for this atlas , so they will lose some kind of customers but gather more people who just want to a family car. I have a SEL premium one, sometimes I wish they can offer 2.5Turbo or V8 engine for this car, but if the price increase to 60K(SEL premium cost 51K), there are too many luxuries car to compete with and VW is difficult to win

    Unfortunately the stop-start doesn't actually increase your gas mileage at all, in fact the only thing this system does is wear parts out quicker so the manufacturer can make more money from parts. Today's engines are so efficient out of the box you don't need this system. Don't believe me, research it, you would have to drive the car for 20-25 years for the amount it saves you to be worthwhile, by that time you have already spent three times as much money on worn out parts. The facts are out there, look it up.

    @6:14 Well that’s a dealbreaker for me believe it or not. I’ve never experienced a start- stop in a vehicle before but from what I read and what I know I don’t like it like many other people. I've might deal with it if you can turn it off and it stayed off but if it's going to default to always be on that's a no go! To me it’s mostly a gimmick I mean really when you're idling at a stoplight for a minute or two how much gas are you really using that you need the engine to turn off. Now cylinder deactivation to me probably saves more gas mileage.

    • @Allthingsfadra
      @Allthingsfadra  5 лет назад

      I double checked just to be sure and the start/stop feature is always on by default. It's definitely something you have to get used to. I'm wondering if it's on by default to help with the EPA fuel estimates. Ultimately, I think the fuel savings will depend on the type of driving you do. If you do a lot of city driving or "around town" you'll definitely see some benefits to the start-stop. I'm not opposed to it by nature. I've just seen it executed a little better. As for cylinder deactivation, I believe I had that on the GMC Sierra which was beneficial for such a huge engine, especially when you're taking it on the highway.

      Wow, I am sorry you had this experience. We bought a lifted 2019 Atlas SE with 4-motion, technology and R-Line last month and we are loving it. I have had people come up to me in parking lots and ask about the car because it's so impressive looking. I am 5'3" and the seat raises up and down and forward, so no problems driving. It is averaging 18mpg, but we had a 2005 Pacifica that only got 19 average for a smaller car. A Suburban we owned never got above 17 mpg, even going downhill with a tailwind and it was not a 4WD. ;) The only thing I would change is to have a larger gas tank. It is 18.6 and should be at least 25 gallons. The good part about having to fill up every 300 miles or so is you should take a break during long drives anyway! Another little perk I like: there are 4 velcro-bottomed plastic "corners" you can set around a bag or box or whatever you don't want to slide around in the cargo area.

    • @michaelaconover3936
      @michaelaconover3936 4 года назад

      Oh, and I use the on position for the stop/start function due to all the road construction and tree-falling being done in our area; we might be stopped by a flagger for 5-10 minutes every few miles.

    You have to drive the car an give a believable commentary if many people are going to follow you. And how do you know you'd go for the 4cyl if you haven't even driven it. You haven't touched the big items. A C- review.

    • @Allthingsfadra
      @Allthingsfadra  5 лет назад +3

      Of course I’ve driven the car! I have each car for 7 days before I review. As far as the 4 cylinder turbo, I’d like the opportunity for that engine in a higher trim level but it’s only available in the entry level trim. My point is a choice in engine would be nice for the consumer, especially those that are concerned about fuel economy.

    • @stephenjones62
      @stephenjones62 5 лет назад

      @@Allthingsfadra The car was stationary for the entire review. No commentary while driving the car. All you said is that you want good gas mileage. Seems you could have driven a 4 cyl to know more about it. What about NVH in general and under throttle on the 4cyl? How does the turbo handle the weight of the Atlas? What about driving dynamics? 20" wheels aren't necessarily better. Some have said the 18's ride better and the 20's are noticeably harsher. Did you drive both?

You can't SEE how well it drives but I can talk about the drive so unless I'm showing a specific drive feature, I don't film while I'm driving since I'm typically a one woman crew.
      As for the V6, once again, I said I'd like to see the 4cylinder turbo offered on more trims as an option. As for 20" wheels, I prefer big wheels - it's kind of my recurring thing.
