    We just purchased a 2020 thirty foot coachman 5th wheel that is permanently set up on a lot on the Texas gulf coast. The AC system works but can not handle the mid summer texas heat. I will be using this method in the next week or 2 to install a window AC. Thank you and rest in peace.

    I love this. My top AC unit works fairly well, but the shroud on top is trashed from hail storms and snow. It will be cheaper for me to install a window AC unit than to replace the shroud, and a window AC unit will use less power and cool my camper more efficiently. I don't have a lot of time to figure out how to install it, so doing it like this will be perfect for me for now. Thanks so much for posting this!

    • @PortDixieandTheJourneyDogs
      @PortDixieandTheJourneyDogs 2 года назад

      Yes! WINDOW ACs R SOOOO much cheaper!!!! For instance! A 5000 BTU will use like 4/450 watts! While a PORTABLE AC of 8000btu which is equivalent to a 5000btu window... Will use like freaking 950 to 1000 watts!!! Ur getting much BETTER cooling with all the heat exhaust outside like a roof one.... While cooling far better for only half the damned watts!! And IT IS THOSE WATTS THAT DRIVE UR BILL SKY HIGH!!! PLUS!! A SMALL WINDOW AC.... ESP IF U HAVE AN EM WINDOW.... AS MOST CAMPERS HAVE AT LEAST 1 EM WINDOW!! LOOK FOR ANY EM WINDOW AND USE IT!! MAJOR SIMPLE!!! POP A WINDOW AC RT IN UR WINDOW OPENING USING A PIECE OF PLYWOOD ON UR INSIDE WALL WITH A HOLE FUT FOR UR AC! I WILL GLADLY SEND U PICS IF U PM ME!! AND ACS GO BAD EAP UR ROOF ONES DUE TO TONS OF DIRT AND DEBREE IN THEM!! MOST FOLKS CANT GET UP THERE AND CLEAN THEM OUT OR FIX THOSE MONSTERS!! ESP WO DAMAGING UR ROOF!! BUT A DMALL WAC CAN JUST POP OUT UR WINDOW AND THEN TAKEN OUTSIDE AND POPED APART AND SPRAYED AND WASHED OUT WITH BLEACH SPRAY AND A WATER HOSE!! THEN TURN IT ON OUTSIDE AND LET IT BLOW OUT! THEN TAKE BACK INSIDE AND POP RT BACK IN!! LIKE MAYBE AN HR AND UE DONE!! FREE LABOR!!! AND IF THE DAMNED THING DOES GO BAD THEN HELL FOR 40/50$$ GO ON OFFER UP OR CL OR FB AND BUY U ANOTHER ONE AND POP IT BACK IN!! Roof ACs don't last once they get dirty or plugged up! They QUIT!! Usually rt when it's freakin 90-120?? U go out come home and fall out the door with a freakin heat stroke!!?? 😂 Or the pets r dead from one!!
      Hell just having one in for a backup is a MAJOR Good ideal!! But keep in mind ur power won't run both wo shutting DN most likely!? U will need an external 110 120 plug to plug into!! IF u r using both roof and sep AC! Or 2 or more individual ACs! ✌️👍
      Anyways I just tryin to help so I hope this does!? If u need picks PM me!

    Thanks for this i have been trying to decide if i should try my luck with a portable unit with exhaust hose kit etc there easy to set up but extremely inefficent power wise & take up space etc here in Australia a good brand 7000btu -10,000 btu is around $600 -800 where as a window box around is $400- $500 delivered, it gets really hot here can get up to 42 degrees C outside !!! average 30-35 summer so window box inverter type is a better long term bet your Vid solved my delema re permanant fixture cutting glass etc etc some plywood and lite timber and fix all screws and im sorted thanks for sharing my lifes better for it . Heck if ur gonna do a cargo like I'm thinking of doing.... Just get EM RV WINDOWS!! Then just pop it open and pop a piece of plywood with a hole in it on the inside of ur window frame enough to hold af inside and make it set rt! Then pop ur small AC rt thru the ply and window! The window popping up over the AC outside will keep tons of water and debree etc out of ur window ac!! Then in cold weather u can just pop it out and pop the window shut!
      Just adding to ideals here! I did this with my EM RV window and IT TURNED OUT GREAT!!! I LOVE IT!!! CAN SEND U PICS IF U PM ME!? ✌️👍🖖

    From the pictures it looks like the unit may be tipping in. this will cause water to run down the front *inside* the RV. A/C units should be level or slightly tipped back.

    • @HowWeDoIt_HowTo
      @HowWeDoIt_HowTo  5 лет назад +8

      Thank you for the comment.
      You are correct that these need to be slightly tilted back, and this one does. The top adapter mimics a pull down window and uses the ac unit's top bar to hold it in place. The bottom adapter mimics the window sill and the ac unit's feet rest on this and are clamped at the inside edge. Good call I forgot to mention that in the video.

    I LOVE THIS IDEA! Can you please tell me what size your RV Window was/is? I'm preparing to buy an RV Window to install in my 6'x12' Cargo Trailer conversion so that my Frigidaire 12"x16" 5000 BTU Window AC can fit through it. But no one seems to have the actual "opening" dimensions listed in their RV Window ad's. Thank you!

    • @PortDixieandTheJourneyDogs

      IF U WOULD LIKE PICS OF MY EM WINDOW AND MY AC SEND ME A PM!! AND I'LL SEND U PICS!
      AS U KNOW FOLKS SELL USED RV WINDOWS ALL THE TIME! SO IF U CAN FIND AN EM ONE THAT WILL SOLVE UR ISSUES! And if u can get more than one then just do all ur windows with EM windows!! 👍✌️ Hope this helps!! 👍✌️

    Will the bottom brackets of the window unit fit in a single hung track of an RV window? Or are they too wide?
    I did one in a window that I had to make a base bridge for, due to size of the unit and not being sure about the bottom. I was on a time crunch and had to plan without really knowing for sure.
    I have a small window of time to be able to open the windows for a short time before the place heats up to where what AC I do have can no longer keep the place cool.
    It doesn't get below 79 right now and won't for another couple of weeks.
    My windows are difficult to access since I've either covered them all to block heat or can't reach them well. They're also very difficult to open.
    I quickly measured the window on my other unit install and realized I may have made it too wide but there was no going back and I made it work.
    This second one I've planned almost as blindly, but it would be so much easier if I knew it would sit in the track like it's supposed to.
    I can create my own insulation on the sides if necessary. And it won't be in the window permanently. It's just to get me through the 100 plus temps.
    My current set up can only manage 19 degrees below outside temps that are 100 plus and that only cool to 80 at night. And only if they run at 72 at all times. It can't be good for them to run non-stop for 22 hours out of the day for more than a week or two. So I'm hoping this added unit will help give them, and me, a break.
    I have one real hot spot near the window I'm planning to put the unit in and am hoping I can just pull the unit out, attach the brace bar, and stick it in the window. Then add my own insulation in less than 15 minutes at the coolest time of the day.
    If you know if it will fit, please let me know.

    • @HowWeDoIt_HowTo
      @HowWeDoIt_HowTo  5 лет назад +1

      OK, lots of questions, let me see what I can help you with. The bottom brackets of the unit are not designed for the narrow ledge of an RV window. That being said sometimes they do fit but will angle the unit into the RV and that causes it to drain the wrong way. The adapters I built are designed to be left in place for weeks or months at a time, however they can be removed in about 15 minutes, these do have some space to open the window but not much. The thing to remember is window units are designed to address one living space or room at a time. RV insulation is designed to be a minimum barrier. This combination works against each other, so even if you have to go back and build something over, it may be better in the long run.
      Start with how you need to mount the AC in the window, so that it drains properly and is secure. This gives you a foundation to work from. Then look at adding foam board insulation around the AC to block the heat from the rest of the window, especially if your windows are single pane glass. To get fresh air into the coach designate other widows and doors as being for this and make sure the insulation you use on these is replaceable, then when the outside is cool enough you can easily open it up and give the AC a break. Using this method can help with hot spots as well because the insulation can be used to block the heat from these spots. I have seen people use as much as 4 inches of foam board on walls in addition to what is in the walls, that was interesting and it stayed cool but it felt like they lived an ice chest.
      We replaced most of our metal blinds with vinyl roller shades to aid in blocking heat as well.

      @@HowWeDoIt_HowTo
      Thank you for the response. Unfortunately the only window I can use, the next biggest one, doesn't have a big enough opening because of the bottom sash. Or I should say, because of curve in the top sash. Otherwise it would fit.
      I found out the bottom sash is not removable. To use that window opening, I'd have to completely remove the window. With a 106 day looming tomorrow, and a 104 day today, there wasn't time to do this.
      So, I'm keeping the unit I bought in case the other one goes out, at least, though I may plug it in to make sure it works first.
      I found out the units I have currently running do get a short break between 5 am and 8 am, so I'm not too worried about them. And I'll survive 85 degree temp for a couple hours in my RV for a few days.
      But I may choose later to remove that other window and put a piece of plywood in there with a notched cut out for the window unit. It depends really on whether my landlord will allow me to get a canopy cover to help shade my RV or not.
      My only other option is a mini split, which would be smarter since I have no idea how much longer my current units will hold up.

    • @HowWeDoIt_HowTo
      @HowWeDoIt_HowTo  5 лет назад +1

      Mini split would be the best choice for performance and cost of use.

    IF u have an EM window on one side end of ur trailer u can quiet easily use it! Just pop the window out leave it hanging open and CUT A LARGE PIECE OF PLYWOOD AND THEN CUT A HOLE IN THE PLYWOOD THE SIZE OF UR AC BOX! THEN TAKE SOME SCREWS AND SCREW THE PLYWOOD ONTO UR INSIDE WALL WINDOW AREA! BEFORE U SCREW IT ON GET SOME STICK ON FOAM STRIPS AND STICK THEM ONTO THE OUTTER EDGE OF THE PLYWOOD WHERE IT GOES AGAINST UR WALL! THEN SIMPLY WHILE STANDING INSIDE UR HOME PUT THE AC UNIT THRU THE HOLE IN THE PLYWOOD TIL U HAVE IT ALL THE WAY IN THE WINDOW! THE EM WINDOW WILL MOVE OUT AND UP AS U SET IN THE AC! AND THEN U CAN EITHER LEAVE THE WINDOW LEANING ON THE AC WHICH BTW ALSO KEEPS RAIN AND WATER OUT!! AND ALSO ALLOWS U TO REMOVE THE AC AND JUST POP IT OVER ON UR BED AND THE REACH THRU UR AC HOLE IN THE PLYWOOD AND PULL UR EM WINDOW SHUT AND FASTEN IT! THEN POP BACK OUT AND IN ONCE PARKED! THOU HONESTLY A TINY AC LIKE A 5/6000 REALLY DOESNT NEED REMOVING!!?? BUT U HAVE THAT OPTION IF U LIKE! I TOOK A WATER IRON THAT FOLKS WITH METERS USE TO TURN THEIR WATER ON AND OFF AT THE METER WITH AND USED IT OUTSIDE TO PROP MY WINDOW UP!
    I ALSO USED 2 METAL ARMS I GOT CHEAP AT WM AND PUT STICK FOAM STRIPS ON THEM BOTH AND HUNG THEM OUTSIDE TO ALSO SUPPORT THE AC OUTSIDE! THOUGH ONE THIS SMALL DOESNT NEC NEED IT!!??
    IF U DONT HAVE AN EM WINDOW BUT CAN FIND ONE OUT OF SOME OLD OR DAMAGED FOR PARTS CAMPER ETC THEN SEE IF U CAN FIND ONE THE SAME SIZE AS THE HOLE U WANT TO PUT UR AC IN AND THEN JUST EXCHANGE UR WINDOW FOR AN EM WINDOW! AND REPEAT!
    1 SMALL AC IS NOT GONNA BE ENOUGH TO COOL A LARGE CAMPER!! SO U WILL NEED AN AC AT EACH END! IF U INSTALL A 6 AT FRONT AND 6 AT THE REAR U HAVE A TOTAL OF 12BTU!! So like whatever TOTAL BTU u need!? Then split that diff IF U CAN?? And put half the diff at one end and half at the other!
    OR install a window AC where u have an EM or where u have a window opening big enough to put an ac thru!? And then install a Portable at the other end!
    KEEP IN MIND IF U MUST RUN MORE THAN ONE AC A 30AMP CAMPER WILL NOT SUPPORT IT POWER WISE!! BUT IF U HAVE A SEPARATE EXTERNAL 110/120 PLUG AT UR SITE U CAN USE THE SEPARATE PLUG! WHICH IS WHAT I DO ON MY BIG RIG!
    WINDOW ACS R HANDS DN THE BEST ACS PERIOD!!!! BECAUSE THEY R CHEAP AS HELL!!! U CAN OICK UP A USED ONE FOR LIKE 40 50 BUCKS!! U DONT NEED BRAND NEW IF UR ON A BUDGET ESP!!! WITH A SMALL 5/6000BTU IF ITS EASY TO REMOVE U CAN SIMPLY POP IT OUT TAKE IT OUTSIDE POP IT APART AND BLEACH IT OUT AND HOSE IT OUT!! ALLOW TO RUN ALL THE WATER OUT AND DRY A BIT WHILE PLUGGED IN OUTSIDE! Then simply reinstall!! IFFFU WILL GET SMALL WINDOW ACs AND TAKE THEM OUT YEARLY AND BLEACH AND CLEAN THROUGHLY!!! THEY WILL LAST U FOREVER!!! KEEPING UR AC CLEAN AS NEW AND BLEACHED OUT WILL KEEP THEM RUNNING EFFICIENTLY!!! AND WILL KEEP THE AIR SMELLING NICE AND CLEAN AND FREE OF MOLD!!! KEEP THEM CLEAN AND FREE OF MOLD BECAUSE OTHERWISE U R JUST BLOWING MOLD INTO THE INSIDE OF UR HOME!!
    THE MAIN REASON FOR ROOF ACs FAILING IS BECAUSE FOLKS CANNOT CLEAN AND MAINTENANCE THEM!! BUT IF U AVE SMALL WINDOW ACs!! U CAN!! AND IF GD IT QUITS WORKING!? POP THE DAMNED THING OUT AND GRAB U ANOTHER CHEAP ASS NEW USED ONE FOR FN 40/50$$ AND JUST POP IT IN AND WAM BAM ISSUE SOLVED!!! AND U DONT NEED A DN HIGH PRICED AC RV GUY TO COME OUT AND CHARGE U A FN FORTUNE!!!
    IF U NEED 2 WINDOW ACs OR MORE TO COOL UR HOMEAND CANT GET 2 WINDOW ACS IN THEN DO 1 WINDOW AND 1 PORTABLE!! PLUG UR PORTABLE INTO EXTERNAM SEP PLUG!! AND UR WINDOWN AC INTO UR CAMPER PLUG! AGAIN U WILL NEED TO DO IT THIS EAY IR U HAVE A 30 AMP! AND LOOK FOLKS!! UR WATTS DETERMINE HOW DAMNED MUCH UR BILL IS!! MY 8000 PORTABLE I HAD USEE LIKE 950 WATTS TO RUN! MY 5000 WINDOW ONLY USES 4/450 WATTS TO RUN!! SO I COULD RUN 2 WINDOWS FAR CHEAPER THAT I CAN EVER EVER EVER RUN A ROOF AC!!!!! AND FAR CHEAPER THAN U CAN RUN 1 PORTABLE!!! U CAN RUN 2 5/6 ACs FOR WHAT U CAN RUN 1 PORTABLE!
    ALSO....IF U GET A PORTABLE!? KEEP IN MIND THAT UR HEAT EXHAUST IS INSIDE AND WILL HEAT UR HOME MORE THAN IT WILL COOL IT!! THEY WORK AGAINST THEMSELVES ONCE THE TEMP HITS OVER 85!!! WHEREAS ALLLL UR HEAT EXHAUST ON A WINDOW ALLLL GOES OUTSIDE MAKING UR CAMPER 10 TIMES COOLER FOR MUSCH LESS WATTS!
    FIND THE LOWEST DIVISION OF WATTS THAT WILL COOL FOR THE CHEAPEST E-BILL!! GO WITH THE LOWEST BTU THAT WILL COOL! AND IF UR USING 2 THEN FIGURE OUT THE TOTAL NEEDED AND TRY IF U CAN DEPENDING ON UR WINDOWS...TO SPLIT THE BTU BET THE 2!!
    I WILL GLADLY SEND PICS OF HOW I DID MY EM WINDOW AC IF U CAN FIND A WAY TO PM ME!!??
    HAVINF SAID ALL OF THIS!? I NEED HELP WITH IDEAL ON INSTALLING ONE IN MY REAR BR! AS I ONLY HAVE SLIDEOUT WINDOWS THAT DON'T OPEN! AND ONLY 1 FRONT WINDOW TO DO AN INSTALL IN! THIS WINDOW IS NOT AN EM WINDOW!! AND I WILL EITHER HAVE TO REMOVE ENTIRELY! WHICH I EONT WANT TO DO WO AN EM REPLACEMENT TO GO IN THAT HOLE!? ORRR WO USING A GLASS CUTTER TO CUT THE GLASS OUT THEN SAW THE PIECE OF METAL OUT OF THE MIDDLE!! AS I DONT KNOW ANY WAY ELSE TO USE THAT HOLE!?
    THIS WINDOW IS BIG ENOUGH TO OUT A LITTLE AC INTO...BUT ONLY IF I CUT OUT THE METAL DIVIDER ACROSS THE CENTER THAT DIVIDES IT INTO 2 PARTS!
    CAN I DO THIS??? CUT THE GLASS OUT THEN CUT THE METAL BAR OUT WITH LIKE A SAWS ALL OR SOMETHING?? LEAVING THE OUTTER FRAME OF THE WINDOW INSTALLED SO THAT NO WEATHER OR WATER WILL GET DN INTO THE CAMPER WALL!! BECAUSE I EONT WANT BUGS AND WATER TO GET DN INTO MY WALL!!! DOES ANYONE WHO MIGHT READ MY POST HAVE ANY IDEAL IF I CAN DO THIS!? AND IF A SAWS ALL WILL WORK ON CUTTING OUT THE CENTER OF THE WINDOW MAKING 1 LARGE OPENING! ONCE I HAVE THAT OPENING I CAN SIMPLY DO WHAT THIS GUY DID RT HERE IN THIS VIDEO!? OR DO 2 PIECES OF PLYWOOD 1 ON EACH SIDE OF THE OPENING! AND SEAL AROUND IT WITH THE CLEAR SILICONE!?
    I NEED TO KNOW AND TO GET THIS DONE SOON B4 HOT WEATHER!
    I HOPE MY SUGGESTIONS HELP!! AND WILL APPRECIATE ANY SUGGESTIONS ON MY WINDOW ISSUE!?
    RT NOW I AM

      Im with you, but I think this adapter would work using the emergency exit window somehow...still brainstorming how to make this work and yet retain the egress option...
