    Thank you for continuing to talk about this Rich. Baseball needs to check its old school boys club mentality. They took out a starting pitcher in the 2nd inning, it’s a huge deal and not to be glossed over.

    • @rayray4192
      @rayray4192 2 года назад +3

      The checking a pitcher for a foreign substance as he walks to his dugout protocol is poorly thought out. M.L.B. should go back to the old school procedure. I’d a manager protests the plate umpire walks to the mound and checks for a foreign substance. The old method eliminates tense moments and possible conflict. Madison needs to practice more self control. The conflict started before the half inning ended. Madison has a very bad temper. Check out some of his intersections with Puig.

      No, what they should do is use tacked balls like Japan does, and eliminate the problem altogether. Baseball screws with the balls every other way but for some reason they really don't want pitchers to have better command, even though it's what both pitchers AND batters want (and I'd argue the fans want it as well).

If a manager complains the plate umpire is compelled to check the suspect pitcher. When a pitcher has given up a home run it’s a bad time to interact with him. Just let him get into thr dugout and take a break. Their egos are fragile and they have hair trigger tempers. Leave them be.

    We've been tossing this whole thing around at work the past week: Why isn't there a mentorship/apprentice program for MLB umpires. Bring up a few top performers from AAA that work the outfield foul line like they have during the playoffs and maybe work a few innings at 3rd? These guys don't have any real responsibility but they get to see how things work in MLB. The MLB crews see that there are some younger umps with the drive to put in the work to get to the show. Also, those crews see that there are quality umps who could easily take their jobs if (read: when) they screw up. The union gets more members, MLB gets some good, young umps in the pipeline, and the current umps get a reality check that they could lose their jobs if they can't be consistent.
    I don't know the full terms of the current deal between the umps and MLB...I assume this is all a fairytail, but I really like the idea.

Somewhere in the crowd, a mom or dad spent a good chunk of change for the ticket, fees, parking, food, drinks, tolls, time off of work, etc. to be at that game with their families. So their child could have an irreplaceable moment of seeing their favorite team and one of the best pitchers in the game in person. To make memories that last a lifetime.
    And this umpire, a man that NOBODY paid to see that day, said "No, I need to make this about ME. I need to have MY moment. MY ego is the only thing that matters today so I'm going to bait this guy and change the entire trajectory of the game" and DESTROYED that day and tarnished that memory for thousands and thousands of fans.
    Not a good look, MLB. Not a good look at all.

    Human umpires are how Major League Baseball cooks the sports books. With sports betting federally legal now, this needs o be investigated, and people need to start being charged with crimes.

    The bottom line here is, nobody comes to baseball games to see umpires except their mommies. They should strive to not be part of the story and MLB should incentivize that in their contracts. The less an umpire is part of the story the more they should get paid.

    Someone else said it but I agree: this needs to be reframed as sexual harassment. The umpire made prolonged, unwanted, and unnecessary physical contact with a player outside of the scope of his job. If that was a ref to a cheerleader at an NFL game (or to a WNBA player, etc) this would be VERY different

    This ump proved that he is equal to Angel Hernandes in his ability to abuse his authority as a Umpire. Maybe worse because at least Angel pisses players off with bad calls.

    He wasn't even the home plate umpire. So, even if Mad Bum was barking a little over calls, it wasn't even at him. Being Angel Hernandez and baiting Manny or someone is one thing (still bad), but at least it's direct interaction. This guy inserted himself from FIRST BASE, then baited Bum into getting tossed. Absolutely unacceptable.
