Thank you Mark for doing these tests for us Flight Simmers 😊
Thanks Mark great info! Now i have a i7 9700K with my 3070, it would be a big upgrade for me BUT I'm not ready just yet. MSFS is still running good for me
If your happy, then don’t change it 👍
you need to get amd x3d cpu , differnece is huge , intel is dead@@SimHangerFS
Nice job trying to pull this together. By its very nature, one can only really look for trends or “FPS on X appears 5% above Y.” Thank you for not fixating on “decimals of precision” when no such precision actually exists for this setup. Your diligence around test procedures is appreciated; a nice complement to the aircraft/scenery/utility reviews.
Thanks Mark, great to see this comparison. You always try to answer the questions that would otherwise follow - ie capframex! Would of loved to see this comparison in VR too - but guessing you didn’t get the opportunity while at their headquarters 😎
I recommend the X3D cpus from and for vr - they perform way better than Intel atm. because of the l3 cache - esp. in msfs this makes a huge difference rn
Very nice video. It confirmed what I've heard and more or less understood. Thanks, Mark! Love from Norway ♥♥♥♥♥
I have a 12900, i was considering the 14900kf for its 6ghz max potential, if it can be cooled well enough. Not sure that the fps will change for VR, the main point of interest for me (pimax crystal), might be just as well waiting on msfs 2024 and multi threading if it comes.
I started with the 10900K and 3080 soon after MSFS came out. Performance wise Not bad, not good, a bit better than FSX was! I then went for the 11900K(3080) and I'd say similar to slightly better performance. Of course in my never ending quest to achieve that almost perfect Flight Sim experience I did go for the 12900K , DDR5 ram and a 3090. Much better performance for sure. When the 13th gen came out I did not go for it as 12th gen was ok except for KJFK, London Heathrow and KLAX as well as a few others that are graphically demanding where low FPS and stuttering was the norm . I did grab a Asus Tuf 4090 and I had the money to spend, burn, waste... whatever so by the time I decided to upgrade the CPU(Once again) the 13900KS came out promising the 6 Ghz out of the box. I'm the happiest I've ever been with MSFS 13900KS and 4090, DDR5 ram 6200mhz I can fly in KJFK with FSLTL traffic and full ultra without DLSS3 frame gen on and still have a wonderful high FPS and no/minimal stuttering experience. So my recommendation is anyone with intel 12th gen or lower will be quite happy with the 13900KS/14900K.
Man im stuck on i7-10700K cpu. Might want to upgrade. CapframeX has been a great tool for me and I'm only scratching the surface with it.
Good info, thanks. I had a 14700k in my cart to upgrade from my 13700k. It has now been removed from my cart. :D
I have a 12700F and am most likely going to upgrade to a 14700K, thanks for this video iit was very interesting.
I went from a 11th gen to a 14900K with a 4090. I don’t regret it for a second
me too! was a lot of money but so worth it!
Enjoy that heater 🧯🧯
@@caribbaviator7058 I will enjoy my custom built computer specifically for MSFS. I will also enjoy getting over 100fps with every single addon I use.
In the meantime enjoy your low end rig!
@@Cloudybox12 has your cpu die yet? My I9-13900K died, im getting an i7-14700K
@ No. I’ve had my 14th Gen for over a year. I’ve never had an issue with it. People have issues that have insufficient cooling. I run a Corsair H150i triple fan.
An interesting comparison would be the 13900k to the 14700k, they look on paper quite similar, but quite a big difference in prices.
Commenting before I even finish watching. Running an i7-13700 myself. So this should be interesting 😁
Got all my PCs and upgrades from Dan at Wired2Fire, lovely chap and always super helpful.
Honestly, in MSFS and X-Plane, an AMD X3d is the only logical buy
Great video. Be interested in how the 12th Gen compares to 13/14th Gen........
12th to 13th gen…as an average + 9%
@@SimHangerFS cheers mate. Appreciated. Upgrading soon from 12900K to 14900K.
The Sim needs to be configured better to use the Multi core cpu to its full potential , hopefully MSFS 2024 when it arrives will do this, the current batch of processors are really only using a fraction of their power in the sim.
Can confirm 13700k is more than enough. Im running it and a 4070ti at 1440p. Its a great experience.
Upgrading from a 10th Gen (Comet/Rocket Lake) to a 13/14 Gen (Alder/Raptor Lake )would be a dead end upgrade at a very high cost.
It would require a new MB, Ram, and the Processor. 14 Gen is the last CPU on LGA 1700 and has no upgrade path, 15th Gen (Arrow Lake) will be on LGA 1851.
It rests assured that half decent performance in MSFS2024 will require a system based on AMD's AM5 or Arrow Lake.
Request - Mark--Please give time for a settings guide to X-Plane 12 with your PIMAX Crystal. IMHO, X-Plane 12 users are not getting due attention by the various YT Flight Sim experts. Thanks.
I lived in Dorking many years ago 😃
Great review, Mark. I have the 13th gen i9-13900k with a 4090. My sim runs buttery smooth about 95% ultra settings, very high fps. 75-80 on the ground with heavy airport, PMDG payware aircraft and scenery add ons and about 130 plus in the air with a 4k monitor. I don’t think I’ll need to upgrade to the current 14th gen but I may to the 15th when it comes out and get a 4090ti to go with it. I get these results in DX 12 beta in sim, frame generation turned on and on TAA. Thank you for the info my friend.
The big question is whether MSFS 2024 will have multiple core support. If it does, it could be that existing CPUs are all that we need to get good performance. I would not upgrade CPU until FS2024 is out and we see if there is a meanigful performance improvment, and if there is not, I don't know why I would buy it.
Mark why not DX12 with TAA frame on or maybe just for test ? Thanks
Yes, unfortunately my time was limited.
So which one are you going with - I believe you were talking about upgrading from a tenth gen intel? I'm on the market for a rig for playing PCVR and I want it to perform as well as possible in the most taxing game at all. There is a great price for a used 4090 rig with 13900kf, but I can't get my mind off the 7800x3D.
I’m in the same boat… decisions decisions 😊
That's quite eye opening. I always thought MSFS was GPU bound.
I know someone who's running a 4090 with an i7-8700K. 4K big screen but runs the sim at 1080p. Looks like he would benefit from an upgrade to an i7-14700K.
Sounds like it would still struggle a little at 4k though.
I was running MSFS2020 on a 4790k with a 4070 32GB RAM on a 4K Samsung TV getting 50-60FPS with DLSS and Fram Gen turned on, then I upgraded to an i-7 14700 65 watt. Big difference.
Nice video! It should have been interesting to measure the GPU load on each scenario, to know if the configuration is GPU or CPU bound. If the setup is CPU bound, it can explain the huge FPS improvement. This is most probably the case with an RTX4090. Almost no improvement between 13th and 14th gen CPU can mean that the setup is now GPU bound (only a GPU load measurement can tell this), or, that Intel's 14th gen CPU have no significant improvement over 13th gen for the same number of used threads. Cheers!
The difference between the 13th and 14th gen has in various other channels already been determined to be marginal, and this test just proved that fact once again. It's a refresh, like Devil's canyon was back in the day.
@@VNAV_PTH Thanks for the feedback! But even with a huge improvement between a 10th gen and a 13th gen proc, upgrading a 10th gen proc can be pointless if the GPU is not fast enough ("limited by GPU" reported in MSFS). It would be interesting to perform this test with a 3080 or 3090 in VR, and high graphics settings. I guess that performance improvements between a 10th and 13th gen would be way more limited.
@@the-cinematic-note I agree, that would be an interesting test.
I wish Intel would stop with these baby step performance refreshes and instead put all the money into developing the actual real, next generation of CPU technology where we actually can see a substantial performance increase.
Hello Mark, first of all thanks in making video’s. I bumped into your channel today and seen some greeting video’s. At the moment I have an i9 10900k but I was more wondering what’s the impact on fps with the GPU? Since I am using an RTX3080 and the GPU in the video is really the best GPU there is this moment.
A faster CPU will provide a boost in performance as the sim is single core threaded predominantly. A better GPU of course helps too.
I don't see what the traffic was set at, that setting has a bigger affect on FPS than anything and is a known issue in FS2020 as it does not use the CPU very well, I am trying to decide if i need a better CPU than an 11900K to get the AI traffic to work.
If you are thinking about upgrading or building a new PC dedicated to MSFS, then go for AMD 7800X3D or 7950X3D. You will get much better fps and way less stutters.
Comparison video on my channel.
Everybody check the other video of SimHangar comparing 7800x3d vs. 13900k - AMD is performing ridiculously well in the 3D games realm with these L3-Beasts
if you're capping your GPU any 300-400€ CPU is good, any
@@kemc77 I am using a 2080ti and am capped on cpu - esp. in vr
the AMD X3d chips is really the only option unless your already invested in Intel.
Thanks Mark for the tests and sharing. Did you end up upgrading your system to Intel or AMD in the end?
Hi Mark. Thanks for doing this video. I feel I have a goos rig but I have a lot of struggles in bad weather or densly populated areas (LHR/JFK etc). I have these right now - RTX 3090/12 gen Intel i9-12900F/64GB Ram
What do you recommend I upgrade to to get the best results possible in the sim?
Consider this ruclips.net/video/U5qTUKpEvik/видео.htmlsi=gezM4qafOiY3bZzk Or wait for intel 15th Gen due out later this year would be my advice. If on a budget consider picking up an i9 13900k if you can find one.
How many cores can it utilise ?
Is it vest to turn off hyper-threading ?
They are more pertinent questions.
Hi Mark, thanks for the informative video!
I am a VR fanatic myself, with an Intel i9 10900, an RTX 4090 and a Reverb G2.
Do you think the same results hold true when flying in the virtual world?
Do you think it will be worthwhile to replace the 10900K with a 13th or even 14th gen CPU?
from 10th Gen to 14th Gen...yes...
Thanks for the video. I have an 7800x3d which I bought specifically for the sim but I'm worried about all the problems it has and the slowness of it in windows..should I stick with it or go for the intel 14th gen? I will have it paired with a Gigabyte rtx 4090 and a Gigabyte Aorus Elite mobo and G.Skill ddr5 6000mhz ram. I heard most of the issues have been solved with the BIOS updates. I don't do a lot of productivity work, but I care about speed.
You’re good with the 7800x3d. 14th gen will be a nominal improvement. Not worth the cost in my opinion if you already have the AMD chip.
@@SimHangerFSThank you so much for the reply. I'll stick with the AMD then.
Yeah you should. I picked up a new i3-14100 on Amazon for £105. It's literally nothing and it kicks arse
AMD 7800X3D is the best CPU for MSFS
Was thinking myself if replacing my 13900K with a 14900K would be worth it after watching the video linked below where the FPS increase between these two CPU:s seemed to be around 5-15 FPS where the majority of time during the short sequence, the 14900K gave around 10-15 FPS more vs the 13900K. That is quite a significant and very noticeable improvement.
However, after watching the test you did here Mark, I'm not equally tempted spending the money and I'm scratching my head, trying to understand the rather significant difference between the results you saw comparing these processors 🤔
This is the other test I was watching and I'm sure there are many more out there. Guess I need to watch as many as possible of them to get a good understanding what to actually expect.

Oke so witch cpu to go for MSFS ? 7800x3D or 14700K?
AMD 5800X3D and 7800X3D are the best flight sim CPUs
Would like to see a comparison with what AMD have to offer right now based on price and target audience.
See my tests with the amazing 7800X3D… ruclips.net/video/U5qTUKpEvik/видео.htmlsi=83Iel-e7DgYsV09-
Sorry this is a bit off topic:
Is it better to choose i7 13700K or i9 13900K for MSFS and X-Plane???
I really need help on this topic from real sim users ;-)
14700k 😂, since it will performe like the 13900k and cost like the 13700k, almost like but you got the idea
Both XP and MSFS are cpu single core bound. The faster the cpu the better. I would opt for 14700k.
@@SimHangerFS Thx . This is really helpful .
@@kemc77 Thx . This is really helpful .
Well I came from the i9990k to the 14900k. Believe me it's worth the upgrade if you're playing flight simulator. This game literally cripples your hardware. RTX 4080. 64GB DDR5 8TB gen5 NVMe. Bloody expensive gaming these days.
You still have the same recommendations today August 2024 as whenever you made this video ? I simply asking
@@salmopr I’m happy with my choice, but still wonder if the 7800X3D would have been a better choice overall on reflection
@@SimHangerFS thank you, sir
So are you going to upgrade to the AMDX3D chip then, as the 14th gen seems a cash grab by Intel to me!
This is the real answer. If you're primarily doing flight sim - X3D is king.
The 13 th and 14 th intel chipsets caused a lot of problems.
How are these results at 4k?
With a 4090 much the same actually 😀
@@SimHangerFS So would you say then that the CPU bottlenecks? I have a i7-14700KF + RTX4080 Super and want to go to 4k now however I am not sure where FPS would end up at and cannot find a lot of good sources, outside your channel of course. Do you have any tips that might help?
@@yosmch yes cpu will be your primary bottleneck
@@SimHangerFS So would upgrading to a 4090 make sense for my setup? i7-14700KF cooled with AIO, 32GB DDR5 RAM @ 6000Mhz, Z790
These graphics honestly look the same as I get from my xbox one x playing through cloud gaming 😂
Watching but I expect the real answer is - Just get a 7800X3D instead
I have a 12900k
Intel I must simply disagree but for many Intel is very good
naaaaah 12600k is juuuuust fine...
No because the game don’t need posh CPUs at all but you are an influencer who lures people to buy gear which is not necessary to buy ! People should be aware of this !
I’m reporting on factual test results for the benefit of the community…if you’re happy with your cpu then great, stick with it.
