If you’re going through anything, know that you’re absolutely not alone, even if you might feel so. Need to talk? Anything on your mind? Let’s chat down below. I’m certain that so many of us would benefit from hearing about what you’re going through to help us realize that we are soooo not alone in our emotions.
I love you guys sooo stinkin much. Thank you for your endless support. ❤️

I personally have been really struggling with anxiety and not feeling smart enough. This last quarter at school went badly. I ended up with two C and a C- in my gen Chem class and will be retaking it when school starts back up in January. I'm a freshman in college and I thought knew college was going to be hard but it's been more rough than I thought. I took college classes in highschool and use to getting A's and B's and it just feel impossible to go that in college. I'm currently on academic probation and the imposter syndrome is real. I also have felt lonely lately. I just want to say whoever is reading this that your amazing and I believe in you. Thanks for listening ❤️

i’m a freshman in college and it’s been SO rough so far, i’m a naturally really introverted person and i just feel like i’m missing out on the “college experience” and it seems like everyone around me is having the time of their life and i’m not. it’s insanely lonely and isolating and my anxiety has been really bad and i just don’t know what to do at this point :(

Hey Rach. I just wanted you to know that last year around this time your vlogs helped me out of a very dark and depressing time. I had to move away from my family in the peak of the pandemic in India to work and live alone. When I watched you, I would think " I want to be like her" so I learnt to cook and live alone. You don't even know what an impact you are creating and how grateful we are to you. Stay strong. This too shall pass!

I think we get anxious and afraid of the empty space (time) because we are afraid of being alone with our mind. We are afraid of the empty and it bringing negative thoughts in our mind, which is why we love keeping occupied, to keep the mind busy and away from those destructive thoughts. You are not alone, I am also feeling what you’re feeling.

Totally agree that breaks are the worst for me as well. I can’t just sit, I drive myself insane. Then convince myself how badly I’m doing/will do

  • @loverox777
    @loverox777 2 года назад +10

Hey Rachel, in a PGY3 Psychiatry resident. I know the feeling of needing purposeful activities or else guilt, anxiety or overwhelm sets in. What comes to mind as something to be aware of is how keeping busy serves you or does not-does it enable avoidant tendencies. Is being alone in the evening/school breaks not necessarily about needing to be productive but rather avoiding real life things that are too uncomfortable to sit with/tolerate? We all have our defenses that help us move forward which without we’d not thrive…the important thing is just to be aware of the “why” behind what we do/the source of our anxiety/our defenses/etc. suppression is one thing but chronic avoidance is another…the latter has mental health consequences like anxiety often times which can be alleviated by the not so comfortable work of unpacking our “stuff”. I always use the emotional backpack example…unless we open it up, unpack, dissect and it clean out (with the utmost compassion, grace and patience)…the weight will always show up in random places of our life, in disguise. I didn’t understand this concept fully until residency but wish I had know sooner, I was in survival mode, but I could have done it in a healthier more self aware way. Never too late.

This made me feel so much better. I feel the same way about studying, it's such an escape from personal life issues. Lmao, I got so afraid of my personal life just coming in the way of my progress in profession that I brought it to almost a zero in the past year. Just took major steps to just ghost people who weren't doing any good for me, gave almost no proper explanation just cause I didn't want to battle anymore, and finally, I was left with just my family, and a few friends I could really trust. I've just been cooped up, studying for step 1 for a while now as an IMG, and a lot of the changes with covid and pass-fail, and elective opportunities showing up then canceling, problems in the world of medical research, just so many ups and downs. I remember i caught a cold and cried for like 4-5 days straight curled up in my bed thinking that was the end for me to take step 1 numerical, cause I was so behind on getting through the material. Silly health issues would get to me. I had to stay at a friend's house to study for step for a while, and there were lots of issues in that house, and i ignored them, but it really brought my productivity down, looking back, as much as i hate to admit. Life just happens whether you're training for the Olympics, or step 1, or whatever big milestone, you can try to be a monk as much as you want, but living itself is an everchanging process. My mom would sometimes tell me to not plan so much cause half the time it doesn't go the way it should, in fact, it never does, but I'm glad I tried, and keep trying. It may cause me to break down and hurt, but trying as hard as I can, makes me feel powerful, and i'm sure i wouldn't even have the blessings I have now if I didn't try so hard. Thank you for choosing to share this side of you, I can only imagine how difficult it is for you to do so, let alone all the other work it takes to sustain this channel. I'm so proud of you, hope you match into the ob-gyn program of your dreams, and spread your positivity mixed with realism throughout the process. Your work is truly amazing.

I was diagnosed with ptsd about 3 months ago, and I started Zoloft 50 mg, coupled with EMDR therapy, it’s been truly transformational. I share this because although it may not be for everyone it may work for others, I once thought I’d always live in despair and turmoil, I had come to peace with it but there is hope for relief.

Man you don’t know how much I needed this comment. Everybody tells me that I should be happy about my breaks from school but I spend the majority of it feeling depressed because it’s like I’m not progressing at all. Have to constantly remind myself that it’s okay to relax and find other stuff to occupy my time. I find it beyond difficult to ever actually sleep in or “ take a break” .

I like how you mentioned having a sense of purpose when working and feeling off during breaks. I realised that I feel really similar (it's beeen worse because of COVID and WFH) but I also burn out if I don't take breaks so it ends up being sort of a catch 22 situation. Picking up a hobby to progress towards has really helped me with taking actual time to relax (I draw and take some art classes during holiday breaks).

I totally get the part about your anxiety creeping up when routine isn't in place and there's a break. As well for the whole 'Anxiety saying HELLO at the most vulnerable times (night).
This holiday season has been especially challenging due to dealing with few mental illnesses at once.
Specifically for anxiety, I received an incredible gift from a company "SAJE" and it's a little reflexology item, ring, that's so relaxing and helpful. I even try to go for nature walks if I can.
I am not attending any medical school but pursuing a degree/ working in the human service field as a child and youth care worker. It's so hard to navigate the world when mental health is on the rise. To do self-care is so important. Thank you for making your content and allowing safe space and the vulnerability.

I totally agree with you, Rachel. I'm in my last year of nursing school and basically my life revolves around school, school is my life. Whenever school is over, I feel like my life goes back to being boring again and I just start missing school. I just got out a 10 month relationship (my longest relationship and I lost my virginity to him, as well). The relationship meant a lot to me. I struggled with trusting him because he was just showing me things that I wasn't comfortable with, he didn't like the fact that I would be so busy with school and that I couldn't hang out with him for too long or always. I've accepted that the relationship is over but I'm still grieving, obviously. I really appreciate you sharing your mental health with us. ❤️

i totally relate with the feeling of being anxious when you're not preoccupied bc trying to do mindless activities feel purposeless. defintely a point to consider in context relative to yourself if you struggle with it - inadvertently it may help you stay more grounded during your other occupations by naturally having experienced more gratitude (fxn of resilience) in the mundane.

I know you go through alot, but honestly you have such a calming presence no matter how you’re feeling. I think your right about anxiety and that we deal in different ways. I think one of the best is a very direct connection to anything you feel safe with. There is so much out there that can feel unsafe, but in the right moments and with the right people or when you can step into what makes you confidant and safe and motivated it can instantly take you out of that place. My hope with anybody is that in the best moments you make that space for each other. Even if it’s just in one tiny little space you find your zen and connection and sanctuary. I think part of a great mindset is finding your way to joy in any situation. Really hard, but it’s always there. You definitely know how to do that.

I hate it when those feelings come crashing down, for me personally it becomes very difficult to stop crying or thinking once I enter that phase... and that messes up with my whole day or sometimes more!
I've always been told how much of a crybaby I am and that i should be strong, watching you have made me learn so much and how you can cry and still be strong like you always have Been! Every vlog of you is a learning experience and it will be a shame if i didn't say how much I've gained confidence over myself, my emotions my academics and how much I've learned to handle rough days and anxiety wether it be personal or academical... and all of this in just about an year... because i started watching you! I'm so glad I stumbled upon your channel on the day i was questioning my decision of wanting to go into medicine...
You inspired confidence in me and made me feel validated about how strong my emotions can get... I still have a long way to go and learn to be able to be better at handling these but you always inspire personal growth rachel! I'm sorry for the ramble I'm just back on your channel after a few weeks and i missed this weekly dose of rachel!
Love you so much and thanks for being this amazing!♥️♥️

Rachel, thanks for being so transparent and real in your videos. It’s what got me hooked on your channel because I am not in med school or going lol. But as a student (recent,y graduated) you kept/keep me feeling seen in my mental health hardships. I wish nothing but the absolute BEST for you, mentally, physically, etc., as you move through medical school and beyond. 💕💕

My school breaks also throw me off! It's so weird because I'm always looking forward to taking a pause from the nonstop assignments and exams... but when I have "nothing" to do I start having existential crises and moments of anxiety. It's extremely difficult to manage, especially when it happens to people like you and me who find purpose from studies and medicine. I hope you'll have better days ahead of you, and happy holidays, Rachel! Thanks for making such raw, relatable, and helpful videos.

Thanks Rachel for being so vulnerable and open in front of your viewers. I’m gearing up for Step 1 and this break has been driving me INSANE! I legit worked on a research project ON Christmas…not my best moment, but it’s soso hard to go from 110% to “relax” mode. I (like all of the Herd) hope you’re doing okay and wish you all the best during your OB rotation! You’re a star!

I am medical school as well, and I totally understand what you mean when you say you go "stir crazy" during breaks. I actually went down a super dark path over the summer break that we had, and without going into details, I totally lost myself and those around me. YOU, Rachel, are not alone, and I'm honored that you shared this with us and that you chose to keep it in the video. I entirely relate. Keep working hard!

Thank you for your mental health chat. I feel like nowadays is still considered too much like a taboo and people that are going through a black period always think that they're alone and that nobody can understand what it's going through their mind. I suffer from anorexia nervosa since 2020 and sometimes is unbearable the pain I feel and even if my parents and my friends are as supportive as they can, I think that only people who have been through a mental pathology can fully understand. So, for anyone who reads this message, I hope that you know that you're not alone. If you're going through depression, anxiety, an ED like I do (or even if you are in a bad place in this moment), know that we can do it. It's really hard, too much sometimes, but we have to keep our heads up and continue fighting even when the pain is too much and nothing seems possible, because one day there will be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Idk for sure, my sister hasn't really been diagnosed, but I feel that my sister has anorexia nervosa as well. If you don't mind, describe to me how this condition affects you?

    • @josephdahdouh2725
      @josephdahdouh2725 2 года назад

My sister eats around 1meal/day(with almost an empty plate), is getting thinner by the day. I am sorta fat(+weak compared to most men), so I asked her if we could work out together, she accepted, but after we did workout for around a week, we measured our body weight, and she saw that her weight didn't go down, and she asked me about it. I told her that it was expected since muscle weighs more than calories. Ever since, we didn't meat again to workout(never really talked about it). Its like the thought of becoming fatter terrifies her. She dislikes most food, even when it really really tastes good, I don't get it. The only foods she enjoys eating are sweets really. But she isn't yet underweight. She is 14, and her weight is around 33kg.

I wish I was more like you+less like you at the same time. I never really go as deep as you as in I enjoy studying, but I also enjoy taking breaks. Moreover, I do get that being unproductive is stressful, and it happens to me a lot. I wish I was as productive as you, but I feel lucky that I don't feel as bad as you do when I'm not as productive.

Going through medical school and residency definitely took a tile on my mental health. I had to set fitness goals, do something else that I enjoyed apart from medicine to detach some. You can’t work all the time. Also, especially when you get to residency, you will see a lot of things that will bother you and you won’t deal with it in that moment. It’s really important to talk about those difficult experiences with people. For example, when my first pediatric patient died and I couldn’t save them. It will stick with you. Keep going. You got this.

I‘m really struggeling with coping with studying stress in a healthy way. I‘ve got all this irrational rules in my head and if I don‘t follow them, I struggle with a lot of guilt. It holds me back from experiencing life as a normal 20 years old and it often results in physical pain too. I went to a sort of therapist and what she says makes perfect sense; I‘d pass my last year even if I stopped right now doing doing anything. But i‘m still the same, there‘s this little demon inside my mind that tells me I need to be productive every single day in order to enjoy something. Otherwise I don‘t „deserve“ it or I‘m being „lazy“ and from there on everything will go downhill, I‘ll drop out and end up without anything; i know, irrational, but I can‘t help it

Wow. Thank you so much for putting this into perspective. I struggle with this constantly and people always congratulate me for working so hard but it’s literally the simple fact that if I’m not doing something my thoughts start to eat me alive 🤦🏿‍♂️. Even when things get tough , I hate asking for help because people always say “ just stop doing …. Or take a break from …” but it’s like engraved in my mind that if I don’t do something then I am waisting my life away

@@jwrivers2148 i feel u! Honestly is almost like a mental illness. You never feel enough, no matter how much u do. Every „success“ to me is just a „coincidence“, that‘s why I can‘t stop, bc everytine I‘m scared that my „luck“ will stop. We have to build up more self confidence, tell ourselves that it‘s all in our head, we have to learn to trust ourselves more, our brains, our intelligence

I know what you mean about anxiety. I had an anxiety attack during my competency and I didn't pass . So it's like starting over their was no understanding. But I got myself situated and still trying. Attacks happen out of the blue for me, so I never know when one will be triggered. Deep breathing exercises help me manage. But a big hug from one anxiety person to another. Rachel you got this, you are a bright, beautiful, and smart woman. Always remember that.

Hey Rachel, really liked the video, as usual. Wanted to share that I recently got diagnosed with depression and it has been shocking. I've been dealing with all the 'symptoms' and episodes for over a year now, but it still is hard for me to process that it's an illness. I'm glad that I have access to mental health services and I'm going to therapy now, but I'm currently getting out of a depressive episode and Christmas eve was rough, very greatful though. I just needed to share this with someone, I know is a bit long, thank you if you read it
