Oh Rachel, you are so hard on yourself. I still love your content, regardless of what you share, and don't care if your videos are highly edited or not at all! When you said "You guys don't need me anymore" I felt a little pain stab me in the heart - not because I felt disappointed about your viewership, but because it felt like it's coming from someone who has some deep wounds and needs to be needed. And that's a totally valid way of feeling here. Perhaps that would be worth exploring for yourself, for your own happiness and contentment with what you do and the content you produce. I know "they" always say you should create the content that YOU enjoy creating, and your people will flock to you and enjoy watching. I think another point here is that you are not in the same place you were a couple of years ago, and as life stages change, so too will the people who view your content. It happens to the best content creators out there! And that's a good thing. I repeat - That's a good thing! It means that your viewership continues to self-tailor to the content you authentically produce - I call that a success! Wishing you all the best with your residency application - you've got this 💞

Awh you guys. I appreciate your concern. I feel like it was a bit misinterpreted. It’s more coming from a maternal-type feeling. Like when your babies grow up and don’t “need” you. Idk. I’m not really sure how everyone has interpreted that statement, but I didn’t mean it in a negative or salty/sad way. It’s been something I’ve just observed and whatever you guys do with your lives when you’re not on RUclips, I’m happy for whatever those things are. And I’m happy that I’ve gotten to be apart of so many of your lives.

I’ll tell you this: I am a 40 year old English professor with ZERO intention of becoming a doctor. Yet, I watch your videos - not all of them, but a good number of them. I’m amazed by what doctors do and what you all go thru to become a doctor. So I’m here for that. And as a not so young working professional woman of color, it’s beautiful to see another woman of color out there killing it in a professional field. So if anything, stay online for that! My female students of color constantly tell me how wonderful it is to see someone who looks like them in a position like mine. On that note, even seemingly boring content has a powerful impact. But ALSO, you are interesting to watch. Your energy and honesty is a breath or fresh air in a world filled with excess and an unhealthy desire to show off and one-up everyone.
Also, in life, we go through ups and downs and varied stages of life. Will everything be super exciting every day? Of course not. I tell my students, not every lecture will be the best lecture you’ve ever had. Not every book I assign you to read will be the best you’ve ever had. But remember that you’re here for the JOURNEY, highs, lows and everything in between.
It’s commendable that you always want to improve. We should always want that for ourselves.
In short, you are enough. This is enough. And it is plenty.
So, thank you for being here and shining some light in this world.

I liked reading this comment because it is good to know that there's another humanities person here who keeps up with Rachel! I'm currently in the last years of my PhD (hopefully!). The way she describes the first couple years as being super hard, isolating, and emotionally draining and then where she is now, out in the field and feeling so much better, mirrors my experience in the PhD. This, even though we are in such different fields! It's just nice to see someone else going through different phases in the course of their advanced studies. It is such a long road and her content reflects that.

You got this Rachel! Every creator goes through the cycle and your stories, whether or not you realize it, are impacting millions around the world. If you feel stuck, take a step back and begin making stuff that you enjoy rather than trying to always find an obvious way to make videos that directly apply to your audience. You'll be surprised by how sharing the small lessons you learn, even if it isn't med school related, can change someone's life. Best of luck in your application cycle and during your auditions :)

Rachel! I got into medical school yesterday. I hope when I matriculate I can find as much love and passion for the specialty I choose as you display. You’re an awesome content creator - I catch almost all your Saturday uploads. Whether you’re making breakfast sandwiches or talking about catching babies it really demystifies this daunting journey I’m about to embark on and gives me a lot to look forward to. Personally, I never notice what you may think are poorer vlogs. I see it as on Saturdays I get to catch up with a friend / mentor and see what they may have to share with me this time and I’m always grateful for it!

Rachel, seeing you happier is EXACTLY what we needed to see. As a current 2nd year, it gives me so much hope that things get better. It gave me sooo much joy to hear you say that you are a happier person now. I’ve been watching you since you started med school, and you are one of the reasons why I had the courage to pursue medicine, and I still get hope and happiness from your videos. I will watch your videos for as long as you will make them. As far as what I want to see, I would love to see you transition your channel to something you would truly love. If vlog-y style things aren’t working anymore, maybe a Dr. Mike style channel is in order lol, I’d love to see you comment on things happening in the world of medicine, or whatever else you want to do! It’s okay to rebrand if you wish, or if you want to stick with what you’re doing that’s awesome too 😊

I've loved seeing you grow as a med student. I really enjoy seeing your day-to-day as a med student interspersed with little moments where you tell us about a procedure you observed/did or something you learned (without breaking HIPAA obvs). Maybe you could throw in more of those moments - like what were those papers about that you had to read the night before? And like, what did that laproscopic game you showed us help you learn for real surgery?
But really, don't be too hard on yourself, med school I'm sure is way harder and time-consuming than anything I've ever done and you need to focus on that first!

OMG RACHEL! Don’t feel bad about your videos! Even though you feel like you’re not connecting with us, I promise you you’re still making a huge impact on so SO many of us. Watching you go through medical school and grow stronger and more confident in your abilities has been such a beautiful journey, and you are my absolute biggest inspiration and role model. I know it sounds cheesy, but your videos have gotten me through a bulk of my premed journey and I wouldn’t want it any other way (you’re kind of like the older sister I never had hehe). You have grown so much throughout med school, and you’re entering a new season in your life and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that! You’ve learned how to handle all the difficult obstacles that come with being a med student, and you’re now ready to enter into residency and kick butt as a doctor. I know I can speak for all of the Herd when I say that we’re all so proud of you and excited to continue along with you on your journey. And I promise you are still impacting us, just in a different way! Seeing you thriving makes us all so happy for you and makes the journey seem worth it, even though it may be very difficult at times. We are all so happy for you and proud of you! Sending you a huge virtual hug ❤️❤️❤️

Rachel you always ask us to chat with you about how everything is going. Recently I had to take in my baby sister (15 y/o) because she wasn’t in a safe situation 😕 she moved in with me and it took a few months to address all the issues and make the reports, and it ended up eating into my study time a ton… I ended up failing my first block of MS2 because I was so busy helping my family. Unfortunately the situation was out of my hands, but I’m still proud of how I handled it because my family comes first and I couldn’t leave my siblings in a dangerous situation. I’m hoping my med school will be willing to work with me to remediate the course, and I’m trusting God that it will all work out in the end. On a more positive note, I just started my neuro block and it is SO COOL. I love neuro and it has renewed my motivation and excitement about being in med school and having the honor of becoming a physician ☺️

Your “happy videos” have been helping me learn to have a more positive outlook and to look at treating patients as exciting rather than daunting. You don’t have to be going through a massive struggle for us to relate to you!
Suggestion about videos since you’ve been feeling a little lost… what about sharing some videos of you teaching us about ob? I’d love to learn how to suture better, how you can handle wiling night shifts… but also just the straight science and all the cool crazy things that happen during pregnancy. You could also share about your other big skills like surgery, psychiatry and how that factors into other specialties, etc. I know you’ve got this and I actually loved this video. Remember you are your worst critic. I’m cheering for you ☺️

However, I have watched pretty well every one of your videos since I discovered your channel a couple of years ago and, although I sometimes have a tendency to skip bits of videos I'm watching, I can honestly say, with yours I never do. I absolutely love watching them and I really don't mind what the content is, I still enjoy them. I have a daughter who is a doctor and I have always been interested in things medical but my career has been in teaching. As regards content of your videos, I would say do what feels right for you and don't agonise about it too much because I would say that, whatever the content, 99.9% of your followers will be enjoying it or benefiting from it. 😊

I can tell you that as a 28 year old woman who has absolutely no plans of becoming a doctor or going into the medical field, you are an inspiration. You have opened my eyes to what goes into becoming a doctor. It’s because of you that I have a better appreciation for doctors and also higher expectations. Because I see how passionate you are about providing the best care to your patients so now I expect that same passion and care for myself. We’ve seen you through your struggles and so that only makes it that much more rewarding to see you where you are now. If anything you’re probably showing many people that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that hard work pays off. I am not a confident person and I can very hard on myself and my abilities to do certain things as I’m currently trying to switch my career from childcare to office work. You made the concept of being a “struggling first year medical student” a normal thing and that’s something I needed more than ever when I started med school. I tried my best to assimilate to the culture and fit in with my friends but there’s things that they’ll just never understand about coming from a true URM background and I don’t expect them to cause it’s not their lived experience but seeing you be so successful while living your own struggles has been extremely reassuring to me that I’ll make it and be where I want to be one day. I started watching you the year before I started med school and now I’m in my second rotation of 3rd year and I’m loving it! Thank you for everything you do

You motive & inspire me while also making me feel like I’m watching one of my favorite comfort shows. It’s the best of both worlds. You DO NOT have to be going through certain struggles to be relatable bc you are relatable in so many other ways. When I see you now I feel so happy & proud & excited for you + it makes me wanna do better for myself too!
I love the videos you’re putting out now so pls don’t stop making them, but if you want ideas for other videos I would love more “study tips/thoughts” videos, but with a twist - I would love to know your preferred methodology for approaching your study content (Do you memorize basics first and then conceptualize? Is it all one process or is it broken up in certain parts? Do you have any tips on how to prioritize lecture content (I.e. what will be on exams/most necessary to know)? Even if your answers are personal and completely related to your own area of study, it’s still so interesting & helpful.
Also, when you feel unmotivated what do you do? Do you journal? Do you have a certain affirmation? How do you get in the “zone” to study?
Honestly I think you can post anything and I’d love it😂🤍🥹 I would even love videos showing your workout routine!! 😂 you can also make videos about your fitness journey during med school and how you balanced your health/fitness with school / any tips on how to fit mental/physical health activities during school & if it’s not possible to fit it in at times, what was that adjustment like for you? (if you feel comfortable of course)

I’d love to hear more about your experience navigating your field of choice, especially a surgical field (maybe more on the competitiveness associated with that field, making yourself a solid candidate and how you stay kind through it all). I’d love to hear about your involvements in school that have led you to OB. My struggle sometimes as a new first-gen med student is allowing myself to be like “hey, if I’m interested in a more “competitive” speciality, I have just as much a right as anyone to explore it” (side note I dislike the word competitive but can’t think of a synonym at the moment). I know it seems like you are not using your platform in the way you initially sought out to, but part of the brilliance of it is seeing the evolution from you taking the MCAT to developing your confidence as a prepared, truly passionate future OBGYN. It shows me that even though a lot of us first-gen/URM students may struggle at the beginning to get a seat at the table, we still all have the potential to make it to the end with hard work and passion.

Rachel, I have always admired you and your tenacity. I’ve been here since you chose your med school - I’ve been quietly cheering you on from this little corner of the internet, as have countless others.
I appreciate the gravity of applying to residencies and having such a public platform. I can’t begin to comprehend what kind of pressure you’re dealing with. But I want to share with you that the more authentic you are, about things you see you may not like, things you disagree with, things you hear and realize “I’m never gonna be like that as a physician” .. the more we are drawn to you. Most of us here have always been drawn to your candor and how unapologetically you’ve lived your life as a premed and now successful med student.
    And I miss that.
I don’t want to tell you how to do ANYTHING, but you asked, and I am simply sharing my two sense on the matter.
Just a side note - I believe if you filter yourself in hopes of not disappointing a residency admissions team - you run the risk of attracting the kind of residency that would otherwise not want the opinionated and unapologetic Rachel. The Rachel we love.
ALLLL that’s to say - you do you, boo. Proud of you!

I can't of course speak for everyone, but the content i connect with the most, is seeing you work hard. Even if you are happier, especially when you are happier. Because that means you're choosing to work hard/hustle even when you don't need to/don't have this fear looming over you. You just work hard because there is always room for improvement, and that you're passionate about what you're doing, and you want to be the best at it. And this is what inspires me too.
So just seeing more of that, watching you balance out everything in terms of clinical postings and studying and bettering your skills while navigating your emotions.
Don't worry about putting out content that makes you look weak/vulnerable. Because that is the message that you should stand for. That you do stand for. That you also go through these highs and lows but still manage to come out the other end victorious. And that is inspirational. Thankss so much.

Rachel, I started watching you in undergrad, as a biology major who thought she wanted to go to veterinary school and then made the decision to decide on going to PA school.(long story) Living with strict parents, I had a new-found freedom where social life and academics didn’t necessarily mix well and my gpa showed that. When I found your channel and saw how hard you worked, it gave me so much motivation and inspiration to not only graduate with honors, but also make the deans list as well! Currently I work at a Chiropractors office as a chiropractic assistant and weight loss coach. I’ve been there for almost 2 years but my path to PA school has taken a turn as my husband and I are expecting our first child very soon 🥰. I still watch your videos all the time as it still gives me the motivation to keep moving forward with my dreams and goals. Rachel, you will be a PHENOMENAL OB/GYN!!!! Your channel will help so many future/current healthcare providers not only keep the enthusiasm throughout their careers but also to enjoy the process as well. We all love you and are so happy to see you enjoy what you were called to do !

The part where you said, "you're growing to better and bigger things & will probably no longer need me for what you first came for" literally made me shed tears. I came to your channel at the beginning of 11th Grade and would religiously watch your vlogs and wait every Friday to watch them.. Fast forward to a couple years now & I've passed my Foundation Year of Medicine (MBBS system) & now I am promoted to Year 1. I hope you know how great of an impact you personally had on me & how much I love your content & your genuine intentions. Your authenticity only made me sure I am ready to go into Medicine and endure whatever it takes. I love you, Rachel! And Keep shining. + I've loved Ob/Gyn for as long as I can remember & when I heard you're specializing in it I was over the moon. Would love to keep watching your journey through residency & beyond. 💗💗💗

Tbh I think I as well as others would like to just keep being privy to the ups and downs of your life and perspectives as a medical student! It’s a very real perspective that I for one am so so appreciative of! In a way you’re like a virtual mentor lol and I think you just have to give yourself more credit.

as a first gen med student and someone with few friends I did consider you a family, we both got to med school the same year and it was hard for me I did not have a fam member or a friend whom I can ask comfortably if my struggle is normal (did not want to upset my parents who thought I was smart to get into med schools nor did I. want to tell a friend that things are hard for me bc they looked like they got it unlike me) so I used to wait every week for you vlog to connect with and feel ok about myself and thro the week id re watch the video cuz It literally felt like I am on face time with a friend, but yeah as you said in Clinical year ur vids shifted to ummm I don't want to say less relatable but yeah they were all happy and full of enjoyment and excitement and positivity which is good and I am happy for u ofc but me in the other hand was facing some difficulties I kinda felt alone and it would actually make me feel bad about myself
I am definitely not blaming you on my lack of confidence 😂 no not at all but just thought Id be honest
+ it is very understandable that u r trying be careful. I agree it is not worth it risking ur passion for RUclips

Watching your videos have inspired me and a ton of people.
If you want more variety on your channel i would love to see more of those 'study with me' videos, those are so motivating and maybe some 'clean with me (real time') kind of things. Rachel I LOVE your channel! I'm pretty shy about commenting on videos, but you opening up compelled me to reach out! I am a college professor who interacts frequently with undergraduate students interested in medical school (I teach biochemistry and have a research lab). Because I have a Ph.D. and never went to medical school, your videos have been INVALUABLE for me to explain what medical school is like to my students. I frequently refer them to your videos so that they can learn not only about how to study for the MCAT, but also to get a realistic look at what the process of medical school is like. I think it's great for them to see the hard times and struggles that can come in the early years of medical school, but it's equally valuable for them to see the highs and joys of rotations when you are working as a doctor. I'm sorry I can't give you more feedback about specific content creation, but I just want to emphasize that just sharing the process is enough and it's really helpful. Thank you for all that you do!

Ok, so I think I’ ve been here since the beginning. I’ ve always loved your videos and the content you put out. I was so excited every single week to watch your new vlog because I knew that we are kinda in the same boat and that I can use your wisdom to ulter my mentality if I’ m feeling low or if something went bad that week for me. I always simpathized with you whenever you had a rough week or whatever. In my opinion the thing with less people watching your vlogs is because there is not a lot of thing we can identify ourselves with you anymore. Don’ t get me wrong but I believe there are some cool and interesting things you can share to make people interested for example what you are doing on a daily basis after rotations, how do you feel about certain things that include your future in medical school, how do you keep on grinding, do you do any hobbies, do you spend time with your familly/friends and soo much more. You used to include your familly and friends in vlogs, we saw your working out routines, you took us to a day in desert with your parents if I’ m not mistaken when you tought you had a bad test day, then to the beach and so much more. And now is mostly just you talking about your rotations we rarely get to literaly see something for real. You can ask that there were people watching you sitting on a chair for 2 years and now there are less of them when you show something else. It’ s because they don’ t identify themselves with you anymore because maybe medical school programs are not the same everywhere in the world(I was a dental studen and we had are exams till the end of uni) I’ m sorry if I’ ve hurt your feeling, I’ m telling you this because I care for you and know how much you’ ve helped me on my journey while studying. Trust me, if there is anything bothering you ever, all solutions are inside of you. If you think you are not inspired to do any content, trust me, go back to basics and remember who you are. You are just Rachel who started this to help people out and share your hardships and victories!! Go with the flow and everything will fall into it’ s place. Don’ t try to push it or rush it, it will be fine. All is well. Be brave and unapologetically who you are.
    Love,
    Anamaria xx

hay rachel here i something you can ponder upon (i’ve been watching from 2019) and i studied with you on zoom so i know what your channel was and the expectations i had when i subscribed. You were super inspirational to me when i was younger but over the years you’ve been educating us more on your life than on medicine. I know that’s the point of vlogs but at this point it’s more about what you do as a medical student rather than giving us more insights upon medicine and study techniques and giving us interesting opinions on medicine ect. Like we all have lifes all of us know what living looks like. Here’s my opinion you got too much influencery and the channel is about you now rather than medicine. See kharma medic’s channel is about medicine (80% then his personality 15% same with doctor mike but you’re is vise versa.) I hope this helps either way i still enjoy watching you. please ponder upon this opinion byeee red ant always : (basically make it more about medicine and less about you) im sorry this might be a bit harsh to hear but you do need to, you have a lot of potential and you’re doing very well BUT: the videos start to feel like a chore i think since lockdown it felt as if you only made videos to make a video it’s a chore for you. I could be wrong and again i’m saying tis so that you can improve and you have insane amount of potential i wouldn’t be watching you if i didn’t enjoy it ( 4 years 🙀) also maybe try something rather than vlogs it worked in the beginning but yes plan a nice script (if you want) come up with a cool idea and maybe just post that once a week like put more effort into editing and coming up with new stuff. hope this helps rachel! please contact me for any clearification on some points :)

I agree. Although I love what she talks and prefer her videos over that of Dr. Mike's and the rest. But, I know that most people favor the others and that the algorithm recommends channels that are entertainment based. So, I feel like if she incorporate entertainment(like walks on the beach- like sitting on grass and discussing everything she remembered studying that day) rather than show us her shoes, her bed, her making her hair. And I feel like the organization that was there a time ago in her editing has been missing. Like Day 1 of the week with the hour shown. Maybe she can even incorporate more of how she is working with other students. Maybe make videos sitting with some friends/1 or several whatever she is comfortable with and then they play a game like asking questions and trying to answer the fastest. Or do you know that:"..." and then the other/others has to say if what was said was the truth or a lie. I think variety=interest=more viewers. I still watch Rachel because she inspired me before and she keeps on doing that, but I do see why some may rather watch more medical content or entertaining ones. Since yes too many irrelevant details are present in these vods and I hate that she is feeling so upset about them because it does upset me. There are resources available such as youtubers who analyze the RUclips algorithm and maybe if Rachel learns more about it, it could help improve her content and attract more viewers and then she could really share her Journey to more people

Rachel, every person who has followed your journey from the beginning wants you to succeed! The Herd understands if you are more focused on real-life stuff as you transition to residency in earnest. I, for one, have really enjoyed the content following your audition residency and everything, because it's like being a proud mom watching you reach another milestone from afar :') And I love your sit-down videos (even though they are hard to film and might be difficult to do when you're an intern).
As far as videos I would like to see, I personally have enjoyed your vlogs focused on preparing for residency. I gently urge you to not be so hard on yourself/compare your new self to your "old" self. You new self is doing such cool things that your old self probably didn't even think were possible! And for those of us that have followed you, it's really exciting to see your maturity/confidence as a (future) physician emerge/become more evident. I would honestly just keep doing what you're doing -- vlogging your residency journey, do a couple sit-down "coffee chats" where you provide advice for those who want to become doctors and/or chat about general stuff. I'm here for all of it! I'm not even a doctor/trying to become a doctor, but I find the process so fascinating and MOTIVATING! And your presence is so warm and soothing for me. So, I'll watch whatever what you put out.

I love your content. I’ve been here since you were a first year medical student, and watching you grow and seeing the obstacles change has been an amazing experience to watch. You always seem so passionate about what you’re learning and what you’re doing, and just seeing that is always so fun. Keep your head up and keep doing what you’re doing!
