‘Twas a wild second week on my pediatric rotation. I’m in the clinic this week and I dealt with pink eye(questionable), my COVID booster, and a bunch of kiddos. Excited for you to watch :)
How was your week?
Pushing through pre-med lol
pretty good :) i posted my first vlog which was really exciting! I was actually inspired by you 🥰
Which booster did u take? I took pfizer and just had arm ache luckily. I start by paeds attachment this week too xx

My English teacher says, “making mistakes is the beginning of learning”. You got this Rachel!!! ❤️
Thank you!
That is a darn great English teacher. Thank them!
My pediatrics preceptor gave me advice that I tell myself every time I feel incompetent/bad about myself (which is totally normal by the way!❤️)- she told me “be kind to yourself, this is your first time doing this!” And it’s SO TRUE. 😊
Ah, so true.
I love pediatrics🥺 I got into medical school for the sole idea of becoming a pediatrist. Love you Rachel, you have no idea how much of an inspiration you are❤️
I’m so happy you love peds :) it’s great!
salam, ATU’da oxuyursunuz?:)
Hope you reach your goals!
Same here!! I’m gonna be studying for the next 5 months to pass the MCAT. I’m graduating next month. Pediatrics is my only reason I want to go to med school.
Great to hear you flip the script in the end , because I was like no Rachel you’re not incompetent! You’re learning!
RACHEL!!! I'm a hs senior right now planning to pursue developmental biology in college. I know it's not med school but your vlogs are so instrumental in assuring me that going through rough/challenging patches does not mean life is never gonna be good again. It's because of you that I am looking at college as an opportunity to grow as a future scientist and person as a whole rather than a daunting obstacle. love ya girl!!!
Thank you Rachel for being willing to be vulnerable on camera, it’s very cathartic and relatable when you share about your struggles and the mindsets you take towards overcoming them :”)
Absolutely. Thank you for your support ❤️
You'll watch an entire Netflix show even when the first episodes are slow and boring just because someone told you "it gets better." *But what if you looked at your goals like that and watched your life get better instead?*
Just wanted to say that your videos are such a highlight of my week. Being a first year med student it's really motivating to see that all the studying and sacrifise that I am doing is going to be worth it in the end. You are going to be an amazing doctor!
Your silver lining comment is so relatable and was something I had to tell myself as well recently with being placed on a different team than I had initially wanted! It's great if something works for you naturally, but even more rewarding when something wasn't working out the way you hoped at first but then with time, discipline and effort -- it becomes you, and those moments also reflect well on your adaptability and resilience. So silver linings all the way!
Absolutely. Reflecting is so important! Instead of saying “why me,” say “why not me.”
I felt so incompetent at the beginning of this past semester in my scanning electron microscopy lab…. I remember crying after a practical because my prof just pointed out every single thing I didn’t know and it was the worst feeling, but like you said, I really felt myself grow in those difficult moments!! Such a great feeling when your superior acknowledges your improvement☺️
Neonatal Nurse Practitioner here!! The NICU is the most amazing place to work. Yes it can be super difficult but most days there are so many celebrations in patient progress. Its incredibly watching the babies grow throughout their journey and then to watch them grow as young children
Hi Rachel, I’m a medical laboratory scientist student and your videos inspire me to keep going even when I’m feeling unmotivated throughout the semester. Seeing you on your rotations gets me so excited for mine next year! I think it would be awesome if you let the herd know of other medical field career options such as MLS, id love if the lab got a spotlight ❤️
I just started working in the NICU as a nurse and it is such a special place! It would be the best of both worlds for you because we also go to all the high risk deliveries and are involved in the birth!
Rachel just really has pediatrician energy to her, and it's so cool to see!
I am quite excited for obgyn vlogs!
The combo of sweet truth, relatability , and genuineness of this video and your whole page truly help encourage SO SO MANY people. Keep doing all the things❤️
Ahh! Thank you Alex 💝
this motivates me so much pls keep doing them!
You’re doing great! Love the vlogs as always 🙂
I loooove the real moments on these vlogs so much! Another great vlog Rachel! 😍😍
Loved the video! Thanks, Rachel!
You’ve come so far! Keep going! You’ll get there:) we are rooting for you💕
Rachel, your videos always make me feel so inspired when i'm feeling defeated to keep working hard on my studies. I always look forward to you uploading!!!
Love these videos!
Honestly I wait each week for one of your new videos Rachel
So cool 👍
Really really lovely 👍
Watching your videos to get some inspiration to finish out the last week of the semester
Thank you for your videos. I love watching them!
I’m loving the pediatric rotation vlogs as your enthusiasm for it is contagious. 😉 I’m super stoked to see your OB rotation.
Absolutely LOVE your attitude about learning, and your ability to consciously shit your attitude to a more productive, positive, and growth oriented mindset. You're really inspirational. Thank you for sharing!
I remember thinking the same during my paeds rotation, I had a patient who had a febrile seizure and diarrhea. I remember thinking I had a perfect history and perfect examination for that patient 😂 the Reg came back and she was like you failed already you missed his sunken eyes. I went back home and went through my dehydration notes and I never forgot again. So definitely keep on practicing and definitely mess up because it's better to be corrected than thinking you know everything.
Loved the ending so much and it was exactly what I needed to hear ! I've been feeling the same way in nursing school and had MAJOR imposter syndrome. Thank you for always sharing the ups and downs studying medicine!!
Hey Rachel I think you are doing such a good job! You inspire me and while sharing tough moments is bad its the reality but what I really like about you is how you show those tough moments but you also kind of reflect on those moments. It helps to see how those tough moments turn into something positive. Your such an inspiration to so many of us! Your amazing you got it!
Such an inspiration!❤️ Thank you Rachel! Greats from Poland ✨
love your video, your point of view on life and how you try to take every experience that you live positively !!
love your videos, you literally motivate me so much- i'm a senior in undergrad and now i'm contemplating going into medicine. thank you for all you do!!
Hey Rachel, been following your journey from its beginning since I swapped to pre-med myself (I'm two years behind you) and your honesty through everything is seriously what gets me through sometimes. This sh*t is hard, lol.
I have my first OSCE tomorrow and I'm freaking out. I thought you had a video where you did one and everything went well, but I can't seem to find it. It could have been another exam. Seeing the real anxiety beforehand and then the relief after really helps me. Thank you so much for continuing to provide these insights into the med school life. Happy holidays!
So amazing to see you saying positives about what you're experiencing!! We need you Rachel you WILL save people's lives ❤ Love u!!!
I watch your vlogs every morning for inspo as I study for the MCAT, thanks for all you do
You can do this Rachel !!
I am really enjoying these videos of your placements, Rachel and I love the way you embraced the challenge this week. Never think of yourself as a failure - you so clearly are not. You work so hard 24/7 and you're clearly so committed to doing your best and learning all the time. Go girl! 🙂
I’ve been feeling incompetent too these days, thank you for sharing your experience it really helps. Good luck in your rotation🤍
Hang in there Rachel! Always fun to see a new video, and I’m proud of you for getting the booster :)
You'll do fine. Keep up the great work. Love these videos.
Thank you for sharing this video with us!!!!! I’m glad your eye situation and symptoms issues from the vaccine got better!!!!!! And I’m also so glad that you realized to take it easier on yourself for those reasons and since it’s still your first year and first semester in clinical!! I’m really glad you shared more with us at the end so we knew you were okay, thank you for that too!!! ❤️
So good to watch you going over that feeling on the same video. Good luck, girl, thank you for the example❤️❤️
I think you’re doing great! It will vent easier :) sending you positive vibes and hugs ❤️
It’s wonderful how much you care 😊😊 and how you push yourself, woo let’s go Rachel!
I love you dear Rachel. You got this. ❤️❤️
You're doing a great job Rachel! Your are smart, giving, kimd, and like hour said Learning. Hope this nest week goes well! 😁 You got this girl!

Love from a belgian medical student, you’re so inspiring ❤️
So excited!! Been watching your vids since the beginning❤️
Thank you Love!
@@RachelSouthard ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for sharing this story about your pediatrics rotation. You are so pretty. You will do better with your next schedule day on your pediatrics rotation.
I love pediatrics 💜🌸
During my internship, I was posted in NICU and Labor room and yeah to ward too. It was lot of work. But I really loved it.💕
cant wait for the obgyn rotation!!!!!
Rachel don’t beat your self up it come with practice!!!!! 🥰🥰🥰
Do not worry Rachel we must make mistakes to learn and you are learning that s why you go to rotations , keep going ❤️
Hi Rachel !
Sending you lots of love ❤❤❤
You can be so proud of what you've achieved already ! I know you already know it, but please don't forget to look at everything you've already achieved. Unbelievable 😍😍 You're the best !
Take care ❤
woo great vlog! i always watch your vlogs and like them a lot. I still haven't got a chance to enter in clinic but i hope that will change soon. loved the dr Glaucomflecken shout-out!
I also got my booster recently, and felt terrible for about 2 days, with fever and incredibly sore arm. it was heavenly to sleep well again.
Can’t wait to apply to med school next cycle, these videos are such a great insight into what parts of med school are like. Honestly though, pediatrics is the rotation that scares me the most, I’m not great with kids yet 😅
You're exceptional Rachel and doing absolutely amazing! Your herd is so proud of you! It'll all get better and be worth it in the end. ❤️
Thank you Morgan 😭🙏🏼
Your videos help me so much
I am not even a minute in and I've decided that I will be going to Panera today! I love you Rachel, keep killing it! :)
Great Video! It’s really admirable how you turned an upsetting situation into a learning lesson. Sending positive vibes!
❤️
Well done Rachel on improving your skills and knowledge! Sorry to see and hear you felt defeated at first but how wonderful that your hard work to improve paid off. And for your choice between pediatrics and ob gyn: indeed wait until you have experienced both. I always thought I would go into pediatrics but in the end I chose cardiology instead.
Great content… Tnx for all the good stuff 😁✌️
I'm also a 3rd yr medical student and can I just say thankyouuu for the silver lining part! So nice to relate with someone on constantly receiving feedback and where you need to improve.
You're such an inspiration Rachel! I'm just super jealous of all your future patients because I know you will be an amazing doctor! You got this!
😭😭😭 wow thank you
Hey Rachel! I'm a med student in Brazil and I'm passing through the same problem! Talking to patients and forgetting to do one specific question is EXTREMELY frustrating! Having to tell the professors we didn't do our job well enough is the worst part of the routine in the hospital. Our realities and school systems are very different, but at the same time, we feel "incompetent" the same way. We're going to pass through this, for sure! Lot's of love
Silver lining! I loved everything about this week's vlog. 🥺❤️
Thank you 🥺
favorite med school vlogger + my dream specialty = best videos ever!! i always appreciate how real you are as you share your journey in medicine, you inspire me so much Rachel :,)
Yay! So happy you’re enjoying the vlogs :)
🐻 can't find the emoji you used lol! Your silver lining pep talk was amazing! Love how you pick yourself back up after reflecting on your feelings. Definitely something I need to work on🥴💘
Incoming M1. Can you do a video on Clinical rotations specifically do you still have normal lectures, is studying 100% studying independent, how does the whole preceptor situation work/how do you pick which rotations you want to do, and how get studying in between rotating??
Don't be so hard on yourself. I am just a nurse but I tend to push myself over the limits. You are amazing and incredible in every way. God loves you and we are cheering for you. You will become a great doctor when you graduate because you have the desire and the willpower.
Dear Rachel, your videos are very informative. Yes, you are learning so remember every encounter with your patients, attendings and presentations are "teachable moments". One suggestion with the repeated eye irritations may be dry eye? Mascara/ makeup can sometimes cause irritation. You got this and will make a great physician.
I bet if you were to ask many doctors when they were going thru exactly what you are now they would tell you they had those exact feelings. Another reason you will b a great dr is that you care so much and you want to do your best, so as you say tomm is always a new day and you are strong and will b fine!!! Luv ya
Japanese Cherry Blossom sanitizer is my favourite ❤️✨
🧸🧸🧸
Love what you do, Rachel! Keep it up! ❤️
❤️❤️❤️
Love that you took that defeated feeling and changed your mindset to a focused challenge
Thank you Tina :)
I would just like to say that I feel very validated by the fact that you also feel that imposter syndrome! I'm a recent graduate in nursing and have not written my NCLEX (licensing exam). I'm struggling to study for it as there's so much content, but also because I have so much anxiety about making a mistake at the cost of someone else's health! Imposter syndrome is so real and post grad depression is definitely valid! Ever since grad, I've constantly circled the drain about if I really want to do nursing anymore....
Ahhh so excited!
I love your content! Realistic but always encouraging nonetheless. I love wearing my Herd hoodie 😄
Yay! I’m sure it looks great on you!
Could you mention an example of questions you were supposed to ask? just curious of what that sounds like! Sending you so much love ♥️
I'm not a medical student but I really enjoy watching and learning from you how to navigate through what feels like a failure and to reflect on it after 🙌🏽 keep it up :)
Thank you 😭
looks like you're having a blast, for the most part!
I definitely am!
Awww you're such a caring Medic 🥺 I feel touched, seeing you talk about how incompetent you feel... 🥺 which is normal... It shows you care🤗
❤️🙏🏼
Loving all the coffee appearances in this vid haha. All the feels for me at the moment #finalsweek
So much coffee haha
Okay! 23 mins of non stop focusing intel this video drops! ☺️☺️
Hahah thank you Ashley!
Rachel, I love your videos so much. You may not know this, but you are making such an impact on your viewers life. I believe everyone has struggled with feeling like their not good enough including me. However, we will get through it. We did not get this far to just get this far!!
🥺🥺🥺 thank you so much Marisela
In the building waiting 😎
Hey Rachel! waiting for the exciting new video! Hope you’re doing well! 😁😁
I just purchased your shirt on your website!
Awh thank you for your support :)
The silver lining part is really relatable. I also had this mantra since my uni days to "Just fail fast". I used to always get frustrated when I don't get something right the first time especially when I was on my last year of Uni. I think I had that expectation that I should be familiar with all the practice sets since I was already at the peak of uni years yet I still continuously got practice sets wrong. Ever since then, I always tell myself to "just fail fast", repeat the practice set, fail again, repeat until I got it right.
I still apply the same method now that I'm working to avoid overthinking the outcome of my decisions. Let's just fail this fast and learn from it. Sometimes, it surprises me when I get things right the first time. But I always tell myself that me getting it right the first time is an accumulated result of all my previous failures.
So yeah, your "wrongs/failures" are actually stepping stones. Keep making them lol
Also, please learn to practice not to talk down to yourself. Even small sarcastic remarks (even if they're funny). These things pile up and they slowly become part of your personality. Eventually, these tiny ones will overwhelm you and put you in a situation where the only thing you'll be hearing is you talking down about you. It's really hard to unlearn them (even I am still in the process of doing so) but this will really change a lot about the way you'll view life and view yourself.
Stay safe ol. Let's all get through this.
Fail fast, I like that.
Yeah, my little downward spiral moment was a rare one. It was a down day. ☹️
That whole defeated and feeling like you didn't know enough is such a new job feeling. But that's just it, you're new at that and learning. And the fact that you were so worried about it shows to me that you truly care about giving your patients the best care possible. If you had been nonchalant about missing a lot of questions to ask, I would have worried about what kind of doctor you would be. But you seem passionate about learning and wanting to make a difference so that's already a plus. I appreciate a doctor being honest about needing to look into something and getting back to me more than one acting overly confident and jumping to a diagnosis even though they're actually unsure. I'm glad you had a supportive attending who also recognized your hard work.
Glad your eye got better so suddenly. Maybe it was really bad seasonal allergies? I have been struggling with my allergies for about two weeks now. Sometimes I get earaches caused by my allergies and of course the sinus pain and tenderness, super itchy eyes that get so watery it looks like I'm crying, and so on.
Awh wow. Thank you for that comment. ❤️ means a lot.
Yeah, the eye things are weird. Everything started suddenly happening when I was studying for my boards in June. Haven’t been the same since.
I'm a psychologist that works in pediatrics! My first time getting pink eye as an adult was when I started working in peds haha
Keep up the amazing work! Your patients are lucky to have you!
Haha gotta love those kids.
Thanks for your support ❤️
Love your videos! So raw, real, and encouraging! You’ll be an excellent physician! Can I ask, where is your necklace from!?
Thank you!!
Ana Luisa!
@@RachelSouthard thank you! I bought their croissant ring recently, and now thanks to you, I’ll be buying their necklace! :)
I think if you’re feeling defeated it’s the first sign that you want to grow around something. It shows you care about it and have drive for it. It is an awful feeling. I hate it too. There are times you can’t win but this isn’t one of those and it’ going to feel really good when you win. I totally get being in that learning experience where all you do is apologize and feel like you’re making things hard for people, but remember the good people are there to help you learn and to carry the torch. All good teachers are understanding about mistakes. Just like you. I think a little energy from your environment or people after days like that is a good thing. Whatever charges you up if you can get it. Personally there are days where I really just need a hug. A mission for anyone out there would be to go hug a friend that might need it if you can. I promise people always need it. One or two can’t hurt, right? Also, baby’s love you for you. What else could they be loving you for? Your money? Your glamorous lifestyle? Anyway, I’ve heard that over time people end up wanting to change specialty, but I think you still seem made for what you’re drawn to and I bet every baby falls in love with you. Everybody out there getting into the struggle, know you’ll come out on top once it’s done. Just wait, it’s going to be beautiful.
ah I also had a stretch where I had eye problems, a stye turned chalazion, conjunctivitis, and back and forth. I think the worst part is that you can only do warm compresses and a round of abx. I hope it’s been better since!! I think stress is a huge factor /:
Definitely agree with stress being a HUGE factor. Hope you’re better now ):
@@RachelSouthard thank youu same to you!
ayyy japanese cherry blossom was my shit in high school too lol
Whenever I am craving for coffee
I watch your videos😂
