2009 NF Sonata Gas Lid Button How it works

  • Hopefully an informative video on how to remove the gas lid trim housing, button, and diagnosing an issue with the power release not working.
Removing the housing is easy, I found it best to pry on the side and work my way towards the bottom. Do not try to pry it out from the top or it will probably break the retaining clip. Simply do as I do.
Next up you'll see me test the positive and negative on the switch, in which both passed. Moving beyond this, we have the actual contacts. One inside the button and one in the base of the switch. They create a momentary short when touched together, thus popping the gas lid as designed.
I initially thought the gunk on the contacts to be the culprit but that wasn't the case. Turns out the contacts weren't making contact with the button depressed. The contact that is in the button itself pulls out easily, no clips or worry of breaking anything. I attempted a quick fix by cutting the spring in two and putting one piece in front of that contact and the other on the back, sandwiching it and giving it extra space to come down and touch the base' contacts. It didn't work as I intended, or at all for that matter. Now I've got to scrounge up a small spring to replace the original one.
You'll see the concept here though, all that's needed is to space the contact a tad towards the other. A small washer would work but I didn't have any on hand. For now I've left the button out, snapping the base back into the housing so I can stick a screwdriver down to spark the two contacts to open the lid, temporarily.
Make sure to clean the contacts on both the base and the button, a smidge of dielectric grease wouldn't hurt either.
This is on my 2009 Hyundai Sonata Limited 4cyl. Filmed with my droid, sorry for the shakiness!

Thanks! - this saved me a TON of time just being able to see it was an electric switch rather than a cable. nice work!

joegq2 I'm glad it helped! As you can probably tell, I'm not exactly a RUclips sensation but I randomly get the urge to post random things 😅
I actually ended up doing away with the factory button and picked up a 'momentary' on/off button switch from a dieing Radioshack. It's been working flawlessly for since this vid (or around the time of it).
If you have any other issues or just questions in general, feel free to ask away ✌

Also! There should be a manual release for the gas lid in the trunk. By the driver side brake light you should see a pull-handle 👍

For people still confused on how to fix it more, the bronze piece on the button with two silver pieces on it as well, take that off and either jerry-rig something on it so that it stays higher or just pull it up higher. The problem is that when you push the button they don’t connect to each other, which is what you will need to fix

OMFG there's a video for everything! Thank you Lord and thank you video uploader guy cause I'm having the EXACT same problem right down to you pressing on that gas release button inside the car like a desperate maniac. And what the hell is up with these cars and their gas cover release buttons anyways?
Opening it up the good old-fashioned way, manually, would have been just as good but noooo they had to make it complicated for our lazy asses.

A thin rubber band solved the problem with the gas door release. Do you have a video for the trunk release button? I opened it by mistake thinking it was the gas door release. I put the trunk release button back together and now it automatically releases when I’m driving, it’s annoying

What's the solution? I never heard the lid open after cleaning. Mine doesn't open after repeated cleanings, but the lid opens when the terminals below the button are crossed.

try turning the little copper plate on the actual switch around. they make contact with the bottom plate in different areas. did that and mine as worked since.

That's exactly how the switch works, in the video when I jump those connections with the pliers it sparks for a moment and opens the gas lid. The same thing happens underneath a good switch, but I think the little copper contact pads inside the switch wear out because of it. (not sure, when I place a switch I tend to tie into a ground negative, not a hot wire)
I ended up taking the plastic button piece that you press, epoxied it in place where it would be normally, then I drilled out a small hole and fit a more durable momentary-off/on button switch in the middle of it. I had to do a minor amount of wiring but so far so good (since this video).
Until I did that, I just popped out the plastic button and used a screwdriver to stick down there and jump the contacts to when I needed gas, instead of popping the trunk.

Daniel Krzysiek Don't do it, it's a trap! that's the biggest thing about new and newish cars, everything's so expensive and they just want to replace instead of fix >:/
