I just ordered an M17, coming from a Futaba 4PL which I had for years. It was a difficult choice between Sanwa and Futaba, especially as I'm used to the feel of my Futaba and got plenty of Futaba receivers. I really like your video, could you also give us your opinion on the feeling once you've tried it on the track ?
I still have a Spektrum DX3S from 2008ish lol, and I race and bash with it. I will probably make it my bash only unit for the trucks, but I have been looking for something like this or the Futaba 4PL/PK for 1/10 on road, so thanks for the video, this radio looks great!
Hey Ryan! Thinking about making the switch from Sanwa MT44 to Futaba 7PX. I’m still considering the M17 but the interface just doesn’t look as slick as the 7PX....... Why didn’t you go to a 7PX if I may ask?
R-Mode is actually a setting that lets your change multiple settings at once during a race. For example- I use it in onroad to adjust my dual rate in steps of 5, but at the same time I also have it set to adjust the speed of the servo so that the overall feel of the steering over travel remains the same. You could do the same thing with the throttle on a 1/8 scale buggy. As the tires wear over a long main, you could use different R-Modes to adjust the various ALB or throttle settings to help manage the car. It's a very useful feature that carried over from the M12.
The M12 has 5 programmable R-modes R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5. Each R-mode allows you change one or many settings with just one click. For example my R1 is my normal settings (everything linear/no driver aids). One click on a button/toggle will switch to R2 which I have programmed for -5% throttle curve. Another click on the button/toggle will switch to R3 which I have programmed for -10% throttle curve. My other R-modes have been set to progressively more curve. It's similar to the switch moto gp bikes have when their tyres are worn and they need to switch to a milder engine map whilst still racing. It's very helpful if you just need to adjust something on the fly without really having to scroll through the menu. It just requires programming in advance.
Ryan I think you've got the best video quality of an RC channel out there....all I can think at the end of every video is "more more more!!!!" keep it up big guy, loving each and every vid from up north :)
Nice to see you finally came around to Sanwa. I personally came from a long line of Futaba Magnums. I urge all Futaba fan boys to give Sanwa a try or at least a look / see.
I have a 7px and tried the m17 at the track with a similar setup car. Wheel and trigger feel is the same for both as i was making same lap times after 2 test laps on the m17. What i did like was the lighter weight on the m17. What turned me off was the interface between the 2. Futabas have a better layout and easier to navigate. I do not think you could go wrong with either.
I hope they solved all the issues which they had with the M17 at the beginning. I am using Sanwa since the M11x and bought a few months ago a brand new M12S. If you want to save money and don’t need the touchpad I also recommend the MT44 which is great for the price.
I made the same switch to the M17 from Futaba. I am not disappointed at all it definitely feels great. With some spring switches and tension adjustments to the wheel and throttle it’s dialed 👌🏻👊🏻
You will love going to Sanwa. Been Sanwa for a few year now. Used trigger for years but recently had to change to stick as I have shoulder issue which holding a trigger was activating to the point the next day after racing I would be in chronic pain. Just as quick with sticks just I feel a little less consistent. Find I have better throttle and brake control with a trigger set. But health has to come first.
I love your vids bubba, can't wait to run into you at some FL tracks! Good video, wish it was more of a comparison video than a solicitation video. But keep up the great high production RC vids!
Ryan, R-mode, I believe, is to store a set of common parameters on the same model to adapt quickly to the condition of the track. For instance in the past, I used it to program on my 2wd mod buggy a softer exponential curve, change steering speed, D/R and brakes, for when the track looses grip. With one click, your radio setup will go from aggressive for high bite to softer, if you realize you put the wrong tires on, or track got very dusty in between rounds, etc.. So if your radio was setup for aggressive driving with high bite, you can get different R-Mode to adapt quickly to changing track conditions for instance, etc... Hope it makes sense.
I have run one for a few races now, coming from Futaba (4px...) too. The model naming menu is totally unnerving as you pointed out. The switchgear quality is lower than my old futaba. The "on-track feeling" though is unmatched and absolutely superb, the car does feel like it reacts quicker and this is not a view of the mind but it actually is very obvious. This is what matters.
Why is there not a radio that uses an external mobile phone for the screen? How often do you use the screen while racing? You could have a strap ion your arm with the screen on. This would make radios way cheaper. This would then pave the way for a communications standard which would allow multiple implementation of software. I mean I can connect to my car and change loads of stuff using the OBDII standard.
Screw that - Futaba 4 Life! 🤟 LOL. I swear, if I could find a digital Tx module for my old 3PJ Super, I would... but it would be nice to see what Futaba offers today... you know - in case I should get the bug to get back into RC after a little more than 20 years. Your videos certainly inspire me to think about it!
I have been with Airtronics since the Caliper 3P Came out so A LONG time. I changed over to Futaba (due to 3d heli sponsorship and me racing was a conflict so i was asked to run the 4PK type R) to the 4PK type R for about 1.5 years. Other then that i have ran Airtronics starting with the Caliber 3P then to the Caliper 3PS then M8 then M11 then M11X then M12 lol and now the M17. I will say this when running 12th scale mod and going back to the M12 from the 4PK it kicked my ass for a little while you don't notice just how quick Airtronics radios and ultra low latency is until you are running classes where absolute precision is required and you go from one brand to another running the same setups and you are catching pipes at the entrance of turns or hitting corner markers and going for a short flight and not knowing why then changing a receiver that slows the protocol down and running perfect again. Once i knew what was causing the issue and having very hard time getting back to tight lines and clean races that are a must in 12th scale. I really really love the M17, the M12 was fantastic and still is but the M17 is totally amazing with just how well it fits my little girl hands. I loved the M11 and M11x for sure but just how big it was caused issues for me the M8 was still kinda big but was ok the M11 was massive and it was so nice when they want to the smaller profile or the M12 and now M17 with how adjustable it is to your hand.
While I do not understand why not to change to a completely touch setting system by Sanwa. Feel and trigger/wheel position is just better IMHO. Feeling and speed (as available on M12) is really a feature, as full speed (less laggy connection) could be too mach at the beginning. I could actually quantify the difference in about 0.5s per lap when I switched from Futaba to Sanwa... With tons of backcompatibility.
I imagine the "feeling" setting is for someone who is dialed in on their remote and used to compensating for a delay. New remote, same or similar delay.
cool video. I was debating between the Futaba 7px but thanks to this video I'm making a switch. hey btw quick question does it also display receiver voltage?
Not sure of I can swing an M17... but looking for a better radio for my son, as he is becoming competitive.... I am wondering if you think the MT-5 that uses the same protocol as this one would be a decent step into a race radio for him, with a fast and stable connection to his cars... given I will need 3-5 recievers total to swap all his race cars, the radio budget is gonna have to be in the $400 or under range.... going to start with his 2 main race classes for outdoor first...
You didn't even mention how many channels it has.. Can someone use it on a crawler like a trx4 with the locking diffs 2nd speed switch, winch, lights and so?
On MT4 and M12 and more of the older Sanwa. you could check the voltage on the reciver battery, but have not been able to find how to do it on the M17? And of course I have telematry on.
I didn't like running a discontinued radio as people tend to see my product selection as a possible reference. After trying a Sanwa recently I figured I would try it out myself! No sponsorship or anything, just trying something new.
I’ve noticed some of the fastest guys on the track run a sanwa I have always used futaba (4px) wanted to know why the top guy us the sanwa and they all said the servos are the best.. can you do a review on the sanwa servos too. I saw some for like almost 200 bucks each.. why are they soo good ?
Might be because sanwa transmitters have a super responsive mode specifically for sanwa servos. Futaba has the same thing now too though, so no point changing imo
Pretty chintzy user interface and menu graphics quality versus Futaba that's for sure. Apparently the "feel" is different, and the programmable Sanwa servos are nice. I'll stick with the Futaba 10PX. I just wish Futaba would put out a more durable transmitter; some aluminum pieces etc to make it a bit more solid.
Hi Ryan, first off thanks for all the quality content you upload here on u2b and for having, quite possibly, the nicest demeanor and outlook in this corner of the internet. I did have one question and, as far as I saw, I don't think you've uploaded any updates since this video aside from the wireless charging. You kinda dodged the elephant in the room and skated neatly past the one thing I was really curious about...why? I'm not saying it's a good or bad move but, for all intents and purposes, the (T)7PX(R) is universally viewed as "The Egg Laying Wooly Milk Pig" as we Germans say of pistol grip remote controls. What were your reasons for making the switch to the M17? Were there deficiencies, niggles or foibles with the Futaba that made you want to stretch your proverbial suspension arms and switch it up? After sufficient time of use I imagine a remote becoming something very particular if for no other reason than the kind of intimate tactile interface your hands make with it (get your minds out of the gutter, thank you) that switching remotes would take a fair amount of time to, recalibrate your hands if you take my meaning. Cheers mate and godspeed, -Diem
I'd like to hear about the long term results of this so please keep us posted. I was about to get a Sanwa but the locals at the track said they were glitchy and nobody runs them so I got a Futaba 4PLS. This Sanwa here seems a lot more user friendly than the Futaba I have.
They probably just wanted to unload some stock. Nothing against the Futaba, but look at any pro-race. About everyone is using a Sanwa radio, unless someone is paying them to used something else.
@@alekss784 - Actually I got it wrong: Spectrum is what they said is glitchy. I was just at the track this weekend and it's basically a Futaba/Sanwa show with some high end KO Propo's here and there.
@@powertothesheeple5422 Yep everyone knows Spectrum has had issues with glitching and no pro I've seen in person races with one. Actually almost every fast guy runs a Sanwa around here. I'm sure they'd be fast with a Futaba as well but if you're going to be into it as big as some are may as well run the fastest response radio.
I got the m12s and was wondering the same thing ...hownlap times work....you cannactually bind the 12s to another 12s and thenother personnset your setting while you drive...imnstill fonding stuff on my m12s
I’m in this exact position but switching from Sanwa to Futaba 7PX! Why didn’t you upgrade to the 7PX Ryan and are your new BK servos SSR/SR compatible to make use of the faster response modes?
Good overview. I see you set all channels to SHR mode but you didn't mention it. There is Normal, SHR, and SSR modes, and SSL features. Consider making a follow up video about those things (I know but others might not) Also, I'm curious to see if the touch panel response gets worse with the protector on. I really would have preferred M17 have physical buttons instead of that touch panel.
Thanks for pointing that out! It's all new to me. I also kinda agree about physical buttons... I like the feedback of pressing something. Old school at heart I suppose 😂
Why exactly did you switch? What features are on the M17 that weren't on your Futaba? Tbh...after using an RTR radio since always, a Futaba 4PL is pretty nice
hi have you tried the new Team Associated RC10B74 4wd buggy. I'm driving right now with tekno eb410 and it's not that good at Astroturf. will be running 40+ World in Denmark this year. so considering switching to associated.
The future of technology is now in our hands awesome radio man just wondering but have you shown off your stadium truck in other videos before you show off your buggy's more though just wondering?
Ryan, great vid dude, but one thing your video didn’t cover was why go Sanwa? I’m interested in your views as I’m lucky enough to choose between M17 and 7PX but would like your trusted opinion 👍🏻
On track feel! It's hard to explain in a technical sense, but I didn't believe it until I tried it in my own car. The inputs from radio to car felt way more natural. I can see why many of the big pro guys have turned down 100% deals with other brands and chose a 0% deal just to get the feel with Sanwa 👍
Hey Ryan, just discovered your channel recently. Really enjoying the videos and finding it really helpful. One thing I’m wondering about is the value of having telemetry on a radio. If you’re able, could you maybe explain how you use any telemetry functions please? Are they really useful?
I'm trying to switch from RTR radios to Futaba or Sanwa but not sure what to get. Everything looks really good. I'm only over a year into 8th scale nitros. I have a couple an want to move up to something better but not sure where to start. I'm more or less a basher have never raced but I'm willing to start once I find a track around me that races nitro. Any advice ? Can't wait to see you running that nitro rig of yours. I watch alot of your videos an have mad respect an love for ya. Keep up the great content.
Spektrum DX5C is a great radio for getting into higher end radios. Cheap receivers too, and you can run several different cars with the one radio. It's just not the best/worst looking/feeling one on the market.
NOOOOooooo!!!! Futaba is better! LOL... In all seriousness though, The debate has raged since the 80’s. Airtronics was always the radio that the Cool Kids ran (and KO Propo was what the COOL Cool Kids ran), but were never readily available to buy. Futaba for me was always reliable, and depending on your budget, always delivered with a great feature set. Not gonna knock the Sanwa, but whenever I decide to get back in the hobby, my next radio will definitely be a Futaba Gotta give props for that little Rx though - looks like a Novak from the 90’s!
As Always super nice video, but you did not say why the switch to Sanwa. I know the weight of this radio is amazing and also the signal quality and speed. Overall I don't want to start a Latency war but I know from trying a lot of radios at different tracks that Sanwa is really amazing and all the big racers where I go are still using their M12s but I think more and more will switch to the m17. For Me I am using an Sanwa MT-4S and a M12s and their are both amazing. Eager to have your opinion about your switch.
That's somewhat disappointing to hear. You seem to be on top of the game and have a great channel. It would be nice to see a guy like you get more recognition from the big companies with some sponsorship. You do a better job of tutorials than most - especially in the RC world. You could even reach out to some of these companies and offer to do a tutorial in exchange for a product.... just a thought.
As far as I heard Sanwa doesn’t sponsor so much drivers. There are also some top pro‘s which aren’t sponsored by them and buying the radios because they are the best.
Anyone else making the switch to a different radio?

Right! I always say that haha super clear picture and audio quality. I HATE when I hit a video and its horrible I dont even watch it lol

Also dude if you hold down the sw2 button and turn radio on it takes you straight to model select menu. I'm loving it, feels better than my M44 👍👍👍
I play with the Feeling setting in On Road. I use it when I need to tame my steering especially in high speed parts of the track.

Hi Ryan does the steering can be change side..i mean can steering be mount to the left side..?
How does the lap time function work, does interface with some of the mylaps transponders?
I got the m12s and was wondering the same thing ...hownlap times work....you cannactually bind the 12s to another 12s and thenother personnset your setting while you drive...imnstill fonding stuff on my m12s
No mention on where you got it?
What radio would u recommend for someone new into rc racing?
cool radio seems like an overly complicated Futaba 4px layout ?
Is there a option to get rid of the drop down wheel or is that the standard look of the radio?
Netcruzer you're vids are great too!!!! You two should do a vid together, and have a race!!!!
Are you going to make another video now that you have used it for a while?
Why exactly did you switch? What features are on the M17 that weren't on your Futaba? Tbh...after using an RTR radio since always, a Futaba 4PL is pretty nice
What do you like better ? Futaba or Sanwa
hi have you tried the new Team Associated RC10B74 4wd buggy.
I'm driving right now with tekno eb410 and it's not that good at Astroturf.
will be running 40+ World in Denmark this year. so considering switching to associated.
Futaba is a
Better radio overall but the down side
Of both is RX cost and battery life
The biggest thing for me is the triggers, i need a tight fit, it does come with extra triggers right?
The future of technology is now in our hands awesome radio man just wondering but have you shown off your stadium truck in other videos before you show off your buggy's more though just wondering?
I have a sanwa m12 s, it feel too heavy. Maybe m17 is lighter?
i notice that your battery level was 7.3 on the tx does this mean you can run a 2 s lipo instead of the 1 2 that comes with it Thanks
If you are racing out doors in the bright sun with your sunglasses on can you see the color screen?
Ryan, great vid dude, but one thing your video didn’t cover was why go Sanwa? I’m interested in your views as I’m lucky enough to choose between M17 and 7PX but would like your trusted opinion 👍🏻
On track feel! It's hard to explain in a technical sense, but I didn't believe it until I tried it in my own car. The inputs from radio to car felt way more natural. I can see why many of the big pro guys have turned down 100% deals with other brands and chose a 0% deal just to get the feel with Sanwa 👍
Ryan Harris - Wow! Thanks for explaining! Do you think servos have anything to do with it (SR mode etc)?
Hi Ryan, love your videos, if you know how to adjust trigger can you do a video, there's nothing on RUclips showing how to do it
Why r u giving up the Futaba? What was the reason? You’re the best, i love your reviews
Pretty sweet tx. Are you going to do a follow up once you get a few hours in??
Awesome brother,,like Always
Hi Ryan, appreciate the great video. Would you happen to know if the M17 has a timer function?
It does
Hey Ryan, just discovered your channel recently. Really enjoying the videos and finding it really helpful. One thing I’m wondering about is the value of having telemetry on a radio. If you’re able, could you maybe explain how you use any telemetry functions please? Are they really useful?
sto impazzendo dove si trova il manuale in italiano per sanwa mx6?
For drag racing you want steering to feel slow so it don’t right to left to fast
I'm planning to get back into RC racing, and trying to decide on MT-44 and new Futaba 4PM, hopefully your vid helps (even tho its not same radios)
@@edwinwx260 I have the Spektrum DX5C when your driving with other Sanwas your connction is getting lost so no High end Buy a Sanwa or Futaba
Why they didn't they tell everyone what temperature is safe for this Transmitter in cold weather?
NOOOOooooo!!!! Futaba is better! LOL... In all seriousness though, The debate has raged since the 80’s. Airtronics was always the radio that the Cool Kids ran (and KO Propo was what the COOL Cool Kids ran), but were never readily available to buy. Futaba for me was always reliable, and depending on your budget, always delivered with a great feature set. Not gonna knock the Sanwa, but whenever I decide to get back in the hobby, my next radio will definitely be a Futaba
Gotta give props for that little Rx though - looks like a Novak from the 90’s!
Nice Vid. Which Futaba do you have and how much do you want for it? ;) ;)
I had the 4pxr and it's already found a new home!
Always the best!!! Nice unit!
Hey sir do you run expo or mess with servo speed in the radio at all?
Know a ton of people run expo steering with f1/pan cars.
MOREEEE NITROOOOOOO!
You never mentioned why you switched brands.
I'm guessing sponsorship - but it's just a guess.
Tried one at the track! Sponsored by $529 of the Ryan Harris wallet lol
Hello it's not a good thing for me that you went from futaba to airtronics but a great information video good luck enjoy
Wow so gorgeous. I need a new transmitter.
Do you have a lipo battery review video, I can't find one if you do. Thank you for your time and effort
🤜🏻💥🤛🏻✌🏻
I was going to get a m17 but i got sick of waiting and got a m12 instead
In my case switch from futaba 3pks/2.4hgz (futaba module) to MT-4 sanwa :D made me quite quicker on same car/electronics :D
should try a noble.
Would be nice if they had A voice, talk back to you and let you know the status of the car ride like spectrum plane remotes. =)
