Old towns like this call me home so much. I left home for the Marines in 2003 and life has kept me away ever since. Some day I will go back to my old home in Georgia. Thank you for the nostalgia.
9:45 This is a gorgeous old house; sad to see it rotting away; though hopefully it won't end up being demolished. The Pendleton-Graves house was built in 1820; a plantation-plain built on a high basement. In 1853 it was purchased and eventually expanded by Edmund Pendleton. The house would be converted to its current Victorian style by R. A. Graves in 1880, when he purchased it.
Old little towns like this remind me of all the criminal Desperado police you will encounter soon as you go to them. I live in Georgia trust me I know what I'm talking about
I live near sparta and you sir are totally wrong. You must be a criminal. Only they would say that. Really good officers on that force. Good down home family men. But we don't like thugs n criminals in our town
My whole family is from there ,I’m researching them now !!!! 5 of my ancestors are in Holsey cemetery #1 in Sparta ; with my 3x great grandfather Henry Clay born 1820 being the eldest. thanks for the video and I can’t wait to visit these sites!!! I’m from a group right now proving how we were Indians turned into negroes and blacks !!!!My Grandmother told me first but My great aunt told me last before she died at 101 this past year “we were and are Creek/ Cherokee Indians before we couldn’t claim it”!she was a baby when they moved from Sparta to Chicago hence where my mom and I was born!!!! I’m visiting this fall and can’t wait ❤
Something told me to watch this video, and I’m glad I did! My grandmother’s family is from Sparta, as well, and I’ve been on a journey to trace our genealogy and oral histories. At this stage, I understand my family wasn’t enslaved and were landowners before migrating North. I’d love information/to join the group researching. I believe my grandmother’s side has indigenous heritage, but haven’t confirmed it yet. However, my grandfather, from Alabama, was adamant about himself being Indian (Cherokee/Blackfoot/Chahtah) and nothing else, but of course classified as Negro/Colored 🪶🔥🙌🏾
Just found your channel. Poor Sparta & all the great cities of yesteryear. Did notice there is no video of Historic Brunswick, Georgia. They have some homes dating back to the 1800’s. Beautiful old homes & a very beautiful old vibrant downtown. Might want to visit & film there. Also, movies have been made in old downtown & Historic Jeykll Island. Also, St Simons Island is near by. Just a thought.
Sparta Georgia is the hometown of former NBA players twin brothers Horace and Harvey Grant. They played at Hancock Central High School in the early and mid eighties.
Love Sparta. Another one you should check out is Lexington, GA, county seat of Oglethorpe County with a population of about 200-300. Many homes there date to the late 18th/early 19th century.
Back in the late 70's and early 80's, I worked for Atlanta News Agency delivering magazines and paper back books and Sparta was one of my stops. Back then it was a bustling little town that had a lot of nice people. Sad to see it in the shape it is in now.
On the way gas is where my oldest sun works at. The Court house was rebuilt about 8 years ago after it burned down. It is mainly new. I live behind the court house. Most folks here in Sparta work out of town I believe like I do. Work here is scarce. Down town is mostly Ghost. Shalom
I tried to share your video on my Facebook page, and I got a message that it doesn't meet Facebook community standards. Then I tried your Rutledge, Georgia, and got the same message. Frustrating! I've never had trouble sharing your videos before now.
@@PastorDanWhite that is so strange! Must be something new with Facebook?? I’m going to try with my Facebook and see what happens! Probably the same lol
I drive through Sparta to get to our lake house and once at about 3 am I was driving through and saw a man walking in front of that gas station at the beginning of the video. I pulled in only to realize the gas station was not open. He asked me if I was lost. I told him no, just passing through and needed gas. Ended up giving him a ride down one of the side streets. He was pretty intoxicated at 3 in the morning and he told me I’m the first white person he has seen in a long time. Hope he is doing well today. The conversation I had with that man has stuck with me and every time I drive through I think about that guy. Wish I knew his name. Would like to invite him fishing some time.
This guy who is driving to fast, this is totally unprofessional, this is actually where In the Heat of the Night was filmed , background noise horrible,

If anybody remembers Sparta beauty supply, my mom owned the store in the 90s. I miss that small town charm.

Thank you for watching! Sorry about the audio, we didn’t realize how much wind noise would pick up on the video

The Hancock County courthouse was gutted by fire about 10-15 years ago and completely restored.
