    So, I shared this on another page I follow but thought it was appropriate to repeat! I went to a friends anniversary party and upon entering the venue, cited an extremely dry Thanksgiving cactus. Poor thing! At an opportune moment I slipped it into the ladies room to water! Returned to original placement! Ha ha, only a plant nerd would do something like that!

    I got my Thanksgiving Cactus as a birthday gift 16 years ago. Needless to say it got very large. So much so that I divided it into three plants a year and a half ago. The trio continues to bloom every November and some times in the spring as well. I keep them outside here in New Jersey from April 15th to November 1st in bright shade. Careful not to overwater or let sit in water. Cooler nighttime temperatures in September and October encourages them to set buds. When nighttime temperatures start to drop into the mid- 30s F I bring them inside. Usually that's around November 1st and they're in bloom 3 weeks later. I never experience any bud drop. They're tough and hardy plants.

    Love the orange one! I got one ( in fact three pots)! I bought that originally three years ago. It didn't bloom last year and due to over watering it was going to die , but I caught it on time and made three pots full of cuttings of it. They all took and now they all are in bloom! I love them! Thanks for sharing your tips. Happy thanksgiving!

    Thanks for the info on these plants, it’s always nice to hear how others grow them. I agree about the bud drop and try keep mine out of strong cold winds as you say sudden changes they hate . Mine live in my bathroom on the window sill all year and get watered when they are very dry, they seem to like that. Here in the UK it’s not so bright during the day so I have flowers in September and November into December which makes the bathroom look like summer on a cold wet day. Nice to have a midweek chat 😁

    My mom got me one last year as a present. I wasn’t really sure what I was doing for a while, but she’s blooming again this year! I didn’t even have to move it! I keep mine in an East window and she seems very happy.
    I just went to my local Home Depot two days ago and I saw several in hanging pots (6 or 8 inch) just like yours. They’re so big and beautiful. I don’t really have the space, but they were so lovely I might have to go back.

      Yours will grow in no time and be just as big and beautiful as the ones you saw at home depot. Often times those are just baskets stuffed full of cuttings in the winter and then come fall they look glorious!

    Finally! I know what to do with the bag of bonsai soil I got for free. Why didn't I think about potting up Christmas Cactus in it earlier?
    Okay, that was off tangent. Mine are taking their dear, sweet time producing buds again this year which means no blooms until after Christmas again.

    Yep, every Holiday Cactus I've bought suffers bud drop. I just accept it as part of the deal. I love this plant and I've been growing them for ten years. I like to try to collect every color. So far I have yellow, red, pink, peach, and fushia. I need white, maybe next year. The red and yellow seem to have a weeping thing going on and those are the easiest to bloom. The rest have sturdier stems and seem a little more upright, but people can argue the all are a little weeping. I keep mine in a west facing kitchen window during the winter spring and fall. In the summer they are still getting west facing sun but I move them back a little, out of the window because they will scorch. Weird thing I've noticed is my red one, which is a monster, and barely fits on the sill. Likes its one side pressed up against the freezing window at blooming time. All I have to do is rotate the plant 90 degrees and all the branches that were in pressed against the window will set buds and bloom beautifully. Then after its done I rotate it again and that side will give me a beautiful display. Sometimes I can turn it two or three times and it will continue to repeat bloom until growing season. The rest are hit and miss. Next Holiday season I'm going to try the dark place trick around the end of September, beginning of October. Oh I keep them in the kitchen and periodically I need to clean the leaves to get rid of the sticky kitchen residue. Clean it with water and a soft towel. I actually use a damp paper towel. Hey, are there any other colors that I'm missing? The pink is dark pink and the fushia is a true fushia with a lot of purple hue. Never ever saw that color before so I snatched it up and brought it home and it dropped all its blooms. Lol! I have yet to get it to rebloom so I hope the dark place does its magic next year.

    Not to challenge your expertise, but I'm pretty sure the main cause of any plant dropping it's buds or flowers is it becoming my plant.

    Hi Jeff! This was another fun and very informative video. I'm on the lookout for at least one of these. I had a large one years ago, but it got so woody and kept dropping groups of pads that I just threw it away because it wasn't at all pretty any more. I had propagated quite a few smaller pads by just sticking them in dirt as they fell off and they made a beautiful small plant that I gave to my daughter. Is there a trick to preventing the stems from getting so woody? Thank you, again, for sharing your knowledge on these beautiful plants!

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  5 лет назад

      Hi sandy! Usually the woody stems are a good thing, they make the plants more stable when they start to trail. I know what you mean though, sometimes it just looks odd and bare. I think if you were to give them a 50% prune every few years and just plop the cut pieces back into the pot it would help keep them full. I'm unsure of anyways to stop the stems from getting woody though. I'm sorry!

    Great video. I was hoping you'd talk about leaf/pad dropping too.. I have an Easter cactus which dropped all its pads down to the hardened cork ones. I repotted it but I'm not sure if it'll survive. What makes them drop their pads?

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  5 лет назад

      Hi jessica! Usually pad drop is from either excess moisture or cold, or a combination of the two, possibly root rot. Was the soil wet for a long time?

    I have 7 of the Christmas and Thanksgiving cactus, and one Easter cactus, They are great plants, mine bloom every year, and I have never had one drop it's buds, my oldest is over 20 years old, one that is over 15 years old and the others more than 10 years old and the youngest is almost two years old. I water mine when they are dry and they seem to do just fine and have put on a bunch of new growth, I always wondered how I could get it to bush out, thanks for the info, I will be trying that with a couple of mine after they finish blooming.

      @@TropicalPlantParty The oldest was my mother's, and when she passed away I inherited it, I love it so much, the one that is over 15 years old came with the husband and I have been taking care of it ever since, then when we separated he left it with me and keeps saying he will come and get it, but that has been over a year and I may not let him have it. The other's I bought over the years. I guess I really just love the look of the Christmas and Thanksgiving cactus and of course the Easter one.

    Hi Jeff. I know this is counter intuitive but the past 2 years once mine had buds and I watered it it dropped all it's buds within days. So as much as I hate not to water my plant I think it needs to be treated differently when budding.

    Interesting information, however, I would never put any Schlumbergera into a closet. This just would not happen in Nature. Setting buds requires energy which requires photosynthesis. If you want to have the 12-14 hours of darkness for bud induction, drape a large black garbage bag over the plants from 6 PM to 8 AM. Also, temperature drop triggers the blooming cycle, so grow them in in a cooler room with no artificial lamp lights going on and off. I use a spare bedroom in the winter and a shady greenhouse in the spring/summer/fall. In the winter habitat, my room controlled electric heating temperature is set at 14 degrees C or lower and they have a large north facing window. If iyour room has a hot air furnace heating system, then close off the register in the fall and winter. Warm blowing air blowing on these plants will induce bud drop. This genus of cactus are epiphytic and grow on trees in their higher altitude coastal mountain Brazilian environment. They love coolish temperatures and filtered light. They also grow best if your media has good drainage. I prefer a blend of Fir bark, Orchiata Pine bark, pumice and zeolite (aquarium filtration medium for ammonia removal) plus some small hydration clay pellets (hydroponic clay pellets) and charcoal. Following blooming, plants would go into a dormant rest phase in their natural habitat. Watering needs to be reduced as roots are not functioning at full capacity and overwatering at this time is usually the cause of demise following the blooming season. Reduce watering to just minimal amounts and once daylight length starts to increase, then GRADUALLY increase the watering. Note: any media that will grow healthy epiphytic orchids will work for Schlumbergera and Rhipsalidopsis. For tips, I recommend the new website and registry for Schlumbergera and Rhipsalidopsis. It is worth checking out (www.schlumbergera.net).

    I'm not a plant-killer, but I had a mother Christmas cactus and her kids for years. They bloomed every other year (or in-between out of nowhere). It got huge, and I even propagated the babies. I just stopped taking care of them and neglected them to death. I actually felt "cactucide" remorse...three months after their murder. They were shriveled like raisins. I celebrate Thanksgiving but not because the pilgrims sat with the native. I am aware it was an invasion and massacre. This day is our family tradition, fall decor, togetherness, and food food food. I also celebrate Halloween but not because I worship the devil nor am I a pagan. Christmas is Jesus's bday. If people don't that is ok by me but let's keep the persecuting to, just don't.
