    This was a car that deserved far better sales and recognition! For 1981 the W72 Trans Am 170 HP 301 4 BBL V8 was dropped along with the dual exhausts, 2.93 rear gears and firm shifting THM 350 transmission, replaced by the gutless 120 HP 265, 2.29 highway gearing, single exhaust and weaker 200 Metric transmission, a severe drop in performance with the elimination of the Grand Am model!

    My first car was a '70 Firebird, base V8 and not much else. It was a fun car that I used for five and a half years on all sorts of trips and as my high school and college daily driver. I also owned a 90's Bonneville when my fiancée got pregnant and we had a daughter. It wasn't the greatest car as it was already kind of worn but it gave us a four door sedan for the car seat. Ironically it was better than the 00 Chevy Impala that replaced it. GM should sell off Buick to the tasteless Chinese and resurrect Pontiac as the sporty division, as Buick will never make anything as cool as the 59 Electra 225, the 65 Riviera Grand Sport or the Grand National/GNX ever again.

    1978-1980 model year Pontiac Grand Ams in California were equipped with the Chevrolet 5.0 Liter V-8. Pontiac's 4.9 Liter V-8 had less horsepower and more emissions than Chevrolet's 5.0 Liter V-8

    • @Dr_Reason
      @Dr_Reason Год назад +1

      I like the 5.0 and you are correct that it was the choice in California, but the 4.9 made 170HP to the 140 in the 305 Chevy. It took TBI to get the 305 up to this power level. The 4.9 was also lighter. They dropped it because they made it on the same line as the 2.5 four cylinder and they needed to make more of these as it was the only four cylinder for the X and A cars. They could machine two 2.5 for each 4.9 they made. It have driven the ESC 4.9 Grand Am and they were a lot better than you might expect. Pontiac was never supposed to make the 4.9 but they slipped it under the corporate radar.

      @@Dr_Reason my dad had total loss 68 firebird 350 and was waiting on the insurance company after nyd 1979 to get back with him, He liked a white and black over red seats Grand Am but someone reminded him of the motor trend article and the CA emissions chevy engine and wasn't sure but dealer tried to bait and switch to newer in stock firebirds or grand prix models. After the wkend the Grand Am sold and had 3 people ask about it but went to gp or lay over 78 firebirds, my dad had Oldsmobiles and were ok with the olds 403 or 350 v8s[gas not diesel] in 77/8 cars but the motor trend article for a nova powered smog pump motor and the wait from insurance stopped him. He later bought an 81 phoenix with the 2.5 pontiac CA emissions engine and 4 spd instead with silver and trans am style wheels like a poster on the sales floor wall. My mom liked the grand am even though it was white and would always be dirty but it had good visibility and room and trunk that could fit a baby stroller and was fun to drive. after all the recalls on the phoenix and cold start stalling that took 2 dealers to fix , we felt the GA was a better choice. In the end, we needed the phoenix after water leak and resulting bathroom reno showed the strength of the phoenix hauling plywood sheets and floor joists and it was good at what it was designed for and could handle lake tahoe and other snow without chains but I think he wished he got the grand am- it was right for the time and easier to fix and fun to drive and they looked good inside and out too...
