Anyone notice at 7:04 how Chick mouths "ONE?" to Vinnie and Vinnie shows him where it is and Chick realizes how confused he's been and both Vinnie and John laugh with him. That's the power of Vinnie for you, damn genius... Rumor has it Vinnie filled in for Dave Weckl on this gig since Dave's father had just passed away and Dave got the call and had to cancel so Vinnie filled in. He apparently learned this whole set while on the plane to Japan and spent the last 2 hours of the flight looking over the charts and just showed up and killed it. You can tell how excited John is playing with him. One of a kind..
OMG!!! Tumba mixed with Jazz. Awesome. For those who don't know, Tumba is a genre originated from the Dutch Caribbean (mostly played in Curacao, but also played on Aruba, where im from). I was going through my research over Dutch Caribbean music, because i was looking for inspiration on mixing Jazz/Soul/R&B/Hip Hop (currently falling in love with Lo-Fi Hip Hop/ChillHop) with Dutch Caribbean music and lo and behold i stumbled to this video. Mind-blown at the moment.
I saw them in concert, in the early 1990s in France, on pure acoustic instruments with Dave Weckl on drums, and Bob Berg on tenor sax : what happiness !
You just might be onto something LJS. I've seen Vinnie live at least 10 times over the years, with FZ twice, several gigs with locals at the Baked Potato in N. Hollywood and the Flying Jib in Encino as well as with this band in LA. The only time he ever drops a beat is when he intends to do so. This band is a well oiled machine in which the sum is greater than the parts...but not by much.
only Chick Corea gets to flip the coin to choose Weckl or Coluita (and Novak) - tough call. This is some seriously fantastic playing by the whole band. The sum is even greater than the parts. Love the drumming, Vin on fire (with that cigarette!). Check at 4:35 the little piano fill, and then the immediate copy by Vinnie a second later - so quality. That Bruce Lee face Vinnie pulls as he sucks on the ciggie at 1:30, lol .
I wonder if there's a time when they didn't shine so brilliantly, either collectively or individually? I mean, they must've started somewhere. But their playing in this concert comes as close to the definition of 'mastery' as any performance i can conceive of. Same goes for John Scofield, Bill Frisell, Joe Henderson, McCoy Tyner, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Wayne Shorter. Numerous other jazz musos
I apologize for hitting 'dislike' instead of 'like' for this video. It was accidental. I intended 'like' obviously. I love seeing and hearing masters at their craft! Vinnie's a drummer's drummer. Zappa, Corea, Jeff Beck and many others sought out Vinnie.
Wow !! .. Vinnie can fill in Dave's seat ... perfectly ... how great he is ... Gadd,Vinnie and Dave are the great jazz drummers ...really ( despite Vinnie has wider range of career fields.. to rock or... any )
If i have to pick one between Weckl and Colaiuta, i'll pick the second one. Dont get me wrong, Weckl is a monster, but in my opinion Vinnie sticks better with my feeling about music, i feel him more organic and intuitive genius, weckl style is more clockwork brain genius
Would love to seen Weckl play this song and he would approach! I prefer Vinnies playing over Weckl personally allday long but love Weckls sound and touch with Chick!
It can, and will. Your classical ear isn't betraying you. Cores is classically trained. Internalize all music, you wonderful musical mind and don't give up the things you feel you don't understand yet.
@Andrew Sykes Lol... I haven't had any training and despise music theory and of course I can play over this any day of the week, I mean it's just a basic 4/4 groove.

@@jeffbabko834 love your Mondo trio album w/Vinnie & Jeff Coffin, mr. babko!😊👍 hope you can do a sequel.🙏🏻
Ohh and John realizes what's happening and plays the main melody to help out Chick.. lmao
this is on my top 3 list of the best things i've ever seen
Håkon Struve definitely one of the greatest live performances of ANY genre of music. it's perfect.
@@andresesqueda1424 Me toozy bro!
What are the two others
i totally agree
Vinnie Colaiuta playing the drums with a cigarette while Chick Corea and John Patitucci are in full on funk mode is absolutely badass.
Chick pianist composer. ahead.
Crazy how Vinnie just switches his hi hat pattern from down to up beat at 4:20. If I tried that my head still be spinning!
Vinnie putting his cigarette out is badass.
forkedtongue7
Vinnie is badass*
Fixed that for you friendo
Gary Novak is beter
Him still pulling the cig...whilst playing the first cpl measures.....is badass! Lol.
RIP CHICK. What a legend 💔

Tønichi cool lol I found this from an interview with Mudvayne’s bass player 😎
"Tumba francesa is a secular Afro-Cuban genre of dance, song, and drumming that emerged in Oriente, Cuba." It's also often just called "tumba".
wow nice 😎
Chick Corea has visited the Antillean Islands many times and has often jammed with local musicians.
Man that RHODES sounds awesome. What a band, Rest in Peace Chick.
I saw them in concert, in the early 1990s in France, on pure acoustic instruments with Dave Weckl on drums, and Bob Berg on tenor sax : what happiness !
I don't mean to be controversial or start a flame war or anything, but I'm beginning to think Vinnie Colaiuta's pretty good.

Vinny is the most beastly drummer I’ve ever seen
You are spot on. 😂
This is one of the greatest trio performances ever captured by 3 titans!

Vinnie so good he’s like” hold on lemme put this smoke out “ and never drop the beat!!!!
Vinnie grooves so hard he makes everything into the best 70's cop film you've seen.

@@JamesConley1234 yeah true. Shud not forget Novak also.
Novak is soooooo underappreciated!! I love them all
Magnifique ! Mille fois bravo pour cette version "hors du commun" !
29000 K views. What a time we live in, where less and less people understand Good music 😟

my favorite youtube video. too good !!
The energy is just crazy!
I think even my dad would have gone out on a limb and said "they dont make music like this anymore son".
Beauti-FULLY MASTERFUL AND everything else that is against EXCELLENCE-AND-ITS-BEYOND!
Man That Bass Player,Off The Chain
His solos ... maybe smarter than those many jazz guitarists ... ha ha The Great John !

Honestly, even in adolescence they were probably miles ahead of their peers
It's what Vinnie Colaiuta is doing with the cowbell that puts this over the top.
Alberti Bass :) MORE COWBELL!!
its what vinnie's doing with the HI-HAT. i mean wtf hes god

Rest in Peace Master Chic Corea...
If your last name ends in a vowel, you are half way there.
OK Chick and Vinnie are playing counter each other and Pat stays w/ V like a boss and a Chick almost looks surprised when it all began? Woof
Rest in Peace to a superhero

You can imagine Zawinul & Weather Report jamming to something like this with a colourful twist provided by Shorter 🎷 🎹 🥁
how is Colaiuta doing with his cancer ?
03:12 Vinnie
One of the best flipping grooves of all time Vinnie and Corea. Glad Vinnie is against all the woke nonsense!
Vinnie is the flipping best!
Holy shit Nikes
I know buddy, but it has not this great quality! Does this exist in DVD? Thank you :)
Vinnie's pretty good. I mean, he's quite alright.
I think l need to take Vinnie aside and explain to him how he'a crushing his fulcrum in his right hand... when is that boy EVER GONNA LEARN!??
1 deaf person dislikes this video.
2* ...
This shit's apple pie, that's what it is!
lost my shit at 10:35
A few of you might find this hard to believe, but Vinnie is better on drums than me. I was shocked when my sticks told me.
Los que son
my classically trained brain cannot understand this rhythm. :(
It can, and will. Your classical ear isn't betraying you. Cores is classically trained. Internalize all music, you wonderful musical mind and don't give up the things you feel you don't understand yet.
Tap your foot to the tempo, every 1/4 notes, and let everything going on in between the down and upbeat drive you
I posted this in another video but here's the groove pattern.
