This honestly isn't that bad. Not great, but not the usual shit. I could see this being a more serious game in 2005-2008 era, but it doesn't seem to quite hold up now. Maybe if they improved on it a bit more.
Fission Mailure Well - thats easy. Most of the other recent "things" he had the joy to handle werent technicaly games. Ripoffs, Techdemos, Scamware XDD are no games sir! ;)
Dejan Kober Yes this game actually looks like it was made by people who are at least capable of making a game, something we can't say about stuff like The Alien Wasteland, Botology, All is Dust and Second Warfare (to name a few).
Can I just say that the voice acting is actually really good use of the robot voice instead of half of the other indie games. This game is actually quiet better than the usual. this is actually rather decent. Sir I give you a tip of the hat.
You know, normally Jim's openings don't bother me but amuse me, but being called "Donald Trump Political Advisers" is something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.
Jonathon Carroll I just took it as being the person who advised him not to go into politics in the first place. I mean he obviously didn't listen, but you can't say we didn't try...
This game has serious potential as an indie shooter. I think all they really need to do is get the kinks with the enemies worked out, and they're good. Maybe add in a system for opposing objectives (getting that armory guy some medicine vs shooting him at the computer's request) that let's the player choose which they want to do instead of auto-replacing old with new, and they'd even have a memorable game that's worth investigating.
OK, they improved the enemies so that they aren't Benny Hill Zombie Bugs and Zombies Throwing Rocks, yes rocks. However, some stuff does... get my attention. For example, "You're infected I won't let you in, but if you get some anti-biotics I will know that I can trust you. Bring me some anti-biotics, my leg is infected." That crap made me go... but we're both infected sooo, OPEN THE DAMN DOOR!! Also, I saw some rigging issues when a few critters died. All and all, I think its slightly better, but definitely not ready for release.
***** I dunno, since all you're doing is hyper concentrating light where would the need for moving parts be? Why would you compromise the lazer weapon's accuracy, even with a cooling system? It's one thing I just never got in sci-fi.
Marquis Forneus I think you are mistaken. This game is titled ghostship, which means the ship itself is the ghost. So you are seeing the ghost the whole time.
Compared to the usual stuff you play, this is a f*cking masterpiece! A pearl of steam greenlight if you will. (This is not even sarcasm... well a little bit maybe but not totaly)
Hmm... strangely enough, steam reviews have this as mostly positive. I don't think it's a bad game, especially compared to some of the blatant asset flips.. but 17 dollars seems too high
Jim Sterling You asked about stock unreal assets. None of these are stock Unreal. The most likely is that they are stock Unity assets which have been brought into Unreal which is a common practice and often look considerably lower fidelity as the textures were not designed to be PBR compatible. I am fairly sure I've seen the jumping ticks aliens before as part of an alien pack that had a big hulking space orc on the Unity marketplace. Though there was certainly texture work done on the zombies as evidenced by their cohesive clothing for the setting. IN fact, I was surprised you mentioned that this was Unreal Engine. After working in the engine for 7 months I can easily say that the assets in general are way, way too sub par for standard Unreal assets. Which is why I believe they are Unity assets ported. Though now that I look at it, the assault rifle is definitely a white version of the tutorial assault rifle which is red and which was featured in another game on your channel.
Alaan Franklin All the assets are original. It is Unreal Engine 3 not UE4 so PBR textures wasn't ideally implemented and the mat editor wasn't as comprehensive. However this looks good enough for Unreal 3 considering the platforms it was designed for. You could do better with money but this was a zero budget development virtually.
Well, at least they've put some actual effort into making this game. Still, the overall quality is pretty much hobbyist-level and the asking price is too high.
CDF Ghostship looks far improved; props to the creators for working on it and pushing it to release in a better state. EDIT: Is this a different version of Ghostship Aftermath?
nateman742 Yes, but it sounds suspicious as to why the dev changed the name slightly. I don't expect stellar early access like darkest dungeon, rimworld or the forest suddenly changing the name to Darkening: the dungeon and so on.
This looks like it was made by an inexperienced team with a non existent budget. But unlike backwards running dog (and friends) It looks like they actually put effort into it. This is the kind of game that desperately needs constructive criticism. So here I go. 1. The tutorial lady talks way too much. Especially for a survival horror. Discovering stuff for yourself would give you a sense of loneliness and confusion. Stuff is scarier when you don't know what it is. The things she talked about were very basic and universal, if you introduced more complicated/weird mechanics then you can put in something to inform us. 2. Too many guns. Superman is a lot less threatening if you were born with cryptonite. The monsters need to be threatening. 3. This goes without saying and isn't so much the fault of the developer(s). Animations need drastic improvement. A horror game like this NEEDS immersion. Without it you can't take anything seriously. So higher quality assets. Solid concept though.
I dont know, Jim. To me this looks better than half the stuff you play. the sound design is good. the premise, albeit cliché is interesting. the enemies are hilarious, yes. but overall, not complete shit
I laugh my ass off every time I see that ‘Johann stole my pistol!’ because that’s a fucking grudge. In the game somebody actually wrote that in blood. It puts me in mind of a roommate who keeps leaving notes. ‘I won’t name names but you know who you are and the mayonnaise in the fridge was clearly marked in my name.’ I’m almost expecting to find several notes in blood written like a forum.
Just curious, but does anyone know of they call it the Colonial Defense Force (CDF) because of John Scalzi's novels of the Old Man's War series? The military force was called the CDF Colonial Defense Force in that series.
Ok clearly in this version the AI was fixed and the path the enemies take is way better. This definitely looks like a game I could play. Jim you say it is a delightful romp through a bug-infested spaceship and I saw that in the video but for you to say not a great deal has changed are you kidding? Do you remember the AI in your first go at this? Do you remember the way the enemies spazzed out? Also the enemies look way better than the way they were before. Things have changed. The only problems I saw here were the iron sights no animation deal and the audio that still lingered on after an enemy was dead. I wonder if after release these things were fixed. Anyone know? Oh and btw it would have been nice to see you try other modes Jim. I like your videos but every once in awhile you are going to tick me off and you did here.
Why can none of these developers match up the movement with the animations? It's not hard, speed up the animation or slow down the movement. I was testing out some animations I made, and it only took like 5 minutes of trial and error to learn how to do this.
Just thought I'd confirm for you, good sir; that you are correct when you say the assets aren't originally designed as far as I am aware. The zombie-like fellow you encountered at 10:13 appears to be the same, or at least strikingly similar to the Plagued Villager in Reign of Kings. To the point where one of it's attacks (ducking down then springing at you with it's arms raised) is pretty much identical to the aforementioned creature in the aforementioned game, Someone please help confirm if my suspicions are correct?
still better than most, but when there is much better out there for free or very little, why buy these games? How are enemies that just walk straight towards you with the smarts of a monster from gauntlet fun?
And loved it, but that drives itself from it humour, not trying to be anything else. Plus it like that because it came from a earlier age. I remember when Halo came out and it was such a shock when the enemies seemed to used actual tactics and try to dodge, flank and stay alive in general, even then they followed ( eventually) predicable patterns.
This is that game Yahtzee & Gabe did a "Lets Drown Out" vid on right? Seems like it's come a long way. ...And lost it's way, it seemed more like a tense survival horror game before, now it's just run and gun all the way? Did Capcom get their hands on this?
I agree with you man, like the idea of it is super cool. Even the landing scene and first step into the hanger I was a bit 'It's not polished but it looks like it could be really cool'.. aaand then the hilarious enemies came, and I saw the gun mechanics and just.. such disappointment.
Some of the concepts are really interesting, but they need to be in a better made game. I think less of a focus on combat and more on exploration and mystery solving would have helped...wouldn't have been enough to make it a good game, though.
Can you play this game using the Occulus Rift? Pretty sure I played this (Or something that looked JUST like this) awhile back at Play Blackpool. Game itself didn't have much in terms of "fun" or even stuff to do, but DAMN was it scary with VR and a good headset!
I love how people basically wrote entire paragraphs in their own blood before being devoured completely, pretty neatly also. The thought of such a scenario is just morbidly funny to me.
These are the same developers who messaged me saying that because I wasn't using the most recent patch by the time I uploaded the video, my criticisms were invalid because it was a whole new experience or something a week later.
I have Given you a year to beat my Ghostship Game Jim, Do you have what it takes to beat Starfighter origins Origins which releases Next Tuesday? Or will you make the game look as bad as you skill level :)
Paddy Meehan I actually really like the idea of a Doom-like randomly generated horror survival game. Though this isn't really horror, just crumby shooter.
It's still got a lot of cultists chanting its praise but I personally did not find it enjoyable as is. They map layout or mission objectives/events isn't even random, just the enemies that spawn.
djhart25 Must be some voice system that you can purchase for cheap or something. You should try out Oolite now that we're talking about it, it's a slightly modernized free version of the space sim classic Elite, with mod support. Fully free to play, meaning there's no paid content whatsoever.
Other than the animation clearly being a bit janky it's hard to be against this im assuming this is a small dev team? and there first game? yeah its not too bad
This game doesn't even look too bad. If the developer(s) ever read this, here's my take: Pros: -Other than the enemies and the intro being a little off, it genuinely looks solid visually. -Difficulty certainly looks okay, those leapy spider thingies remind me of Natural Selection. -Love the screen distortion on low health. It's not bothersome. Others could disagree with this though. -I liked the voice acting for Elliot (the survivor guy) more than that of NPCs in most triple A games... Cons: -Gun models are probably a little too big. -The robot voice is being overused. -The way the enemies look really needs work. Their sound could use some work too. It's the biggest issue the game has, really. It kills the immersion bigtime. One of the reasons Dead Space was so cool is because the enemies were so cool, and judging by the leapy spiders this game can be very cool if they didn't make the same noise all the time and looked so out of place.
Is there a script of some sort? What makes scifi horror games like system shock 2 and dead space 1 really awesome is because partly of their storytelling
This honestly isn't that bad. Not great, but not the usual shit.
I could see this being a more serious game in 2005-2008 era, but it doesn't seem to quite hold up now. Maybe if they improved on it a bit more.
Comparing to rest of stuff review by Jim, this actually looks quite decently. I might even try it out.
Dejan Kober Yeah, it's not a game I'd play, but it's definitely a cut above most of the games he plays.
Fission Mailure Well - thats easy. Most of the other recent "things" he had the joy to handle werent technicaly games. Ripoffs, Techdemos, Scamware XDD are no games sir! ;)
Dejan Kober Yes this game actually looks like it was made by people who are at least capable of making a game, something we can't say about stuff like The Alien Wasteland, Botology, All is Dust and Second Warfare (to name a few).
tominatorxx Actually, it was made by single guy, so that just extra plus for it.
Dejan Kober Then I think it's actually pretty impressive. If that's the work of just one guy.
Damn Jim, that was by far the worst insult you've hurled at us yet
Sentinalh How dare I be referenced in the same breath as DT! I feel a need to take a shower now.
***** Definitely not Donald Trump's campaign manager
Sentinalh um k 0/10
Exactly. This shit WILL. NOT. STAND.
Giggling clitoris? Fine.
DONALD TRUMP ADVISOR?
I AM AN EX-NAVY SEAL...

Thank god it's not louder better than the usual.
Star Sloth sick meme you clever memer
"Donald trump political advisors" is probably the most offensive thing you've called us in the intro
Who is that?
Danni de Vylder Google it.
PyroSquirtle Right up there with "tea party republicans"
***** Mexicans are like the American version of wildlings?
Skyrim Guard No more like white walkers. Republicans are scared that if they come over they will turn states to the left wing.
honestly the dev put some honest to goodness effort into this. I might even check it out to support them
You know, normally Jim's openings don't bother me but amuse me, but being called "Donald Trump Political Advisers" is something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.
Let's go buy some Mexican piñatas.
An Croí na hÉireann the heart of Ireland ehhh?
Evan Young That's me mate.
An Croí na hÉireann Well, just fill it with teabags and chips and you'll make it irish.
Jonathon Carroll

so, uh... why do lazer rifles have recoil?
Karelwolfpup Could be a cooling mechanism.
*****
recoil as a cooling mechanism?
Karelwolfpup No I mean the recoil is the result of a cooling mechanism. Like a pump or heatsink or something.
*****
I dunno, since all you're doing is hyper concentrating light where would the need for moving parts be? Why would you compromise the lazer weapon's accuracy, even with a cooling system?
It's one thing I just never got in sci-fi.
Karelwolfpup Because if you don't cool it your weapon melts. And I think we can agree that melting weapons are not useful.
1:19 and there's planet Greenlight, a place shrouded in the ever-growing storms that rain acid upon its inhabitants!
Lack of ghosts is disappointing I wanted to see space ghosts. 0/10
Marquis Forneus Maybe those are insect ghosts though...OR...there's a twist that you were a ghost all along.....shyamalanwhatatwist.gif
Marquis Forneus space ghosts too busy hosting fictional talk shows
Marquis Forneus I mean, if it's a weird zombies and giant leech game they should call it CDF Weirdzombieandgiantleechship.
Oh they're there! Didn't you see all of them!?
They're just invisible, that's all!
Marquis Forneus I think you are mistaken. This game is titled ghostship, which means the ship itself is the ghost. So you are seeing the ghost the whole time.
Nice to see that Jim is still not sick of the "helps to have a map" joke lol.

I just got an L.A Noire ad on this video... if it's a sequel, wouldn't it be 2? I gotta look this up.
Ironically, "helps to have a map" has been true in just about every game EXCEPT Guise of the Wolf.
Still better than Aliens: Colonial Marines.
Well, at least they've put some actual effort into making this game. Still, the overall quality is pretty much hobbyist-level and the asking price is too high.
It doesn't look too terrible.
Atleast it seems like the dev put *SOME* effort into it.
16:16 That sounds exactly like one of the guys from Mega64

Fynxz77 two different games. Aftermath is a VR game and designed specifically for VR. Ghostship isn't.
4:26 Guise of the Wolf reference, I see what you did there Jim! :)
That laser gun acts an awful lot like a machine-gun.
This looks like it was made by an inexperienced team with a non existent budget.

It looks like they actually put effort into it. This is the kind of game that desperately needs constructive criticism. So here I go.

The definition of insanity.

Eric Larson IUnderstoodThatReference.gif
Lmao. He sadly did press als F and U -as well :p
Eric Larson Pickles.
0:48 (and thumb nail.) that ship ship looks awesome!
Using a plaster is always nice. You can patch things up with your enemies! Lol cheese, lots of cheese with this one sir!
I dont know, Jim. To me this looks better than half the stuff you play. the sound design is good. the premise, albeit cliché is interesting. the enemies are hilarious, yes. but overall, not complete shit
This is a Jim Sterling playthrough though. It's not Silent Hill 2 though, ergo, it's terrible.
You have to remember that this was done in 2015, back when a bad game on Steam was pretty ok compared to bad game on Steam these days.
genial el video
gracias por subirlo, haces un excelente trabajo, sigue asi
espero con ansias el ver mas
:3
Is that violin drone nicked from Bioshock?
I remember Yahtzee and Gabe playing this when was early access and called Ghostship Aftermath. It looks way better now than it did then.

Aliens 2? You mean that crappy video game sequel to Aliens?
Just thought I'd confirm for you, good sir; that you are correct when you say the assets aren't originally designed as far as I am aware.
The zombie-like fellow you encountered at 10:13 appears to be the same, or at least strikingly similar to the Plagued Villager in Reign of Kings. To the point where one of it's attacks (ducking down then springing at you with it's arms raised) is pretty much identical to the aforementioned creature in the aforementioned game,
Someone please help confirm if my suspicions are correct?
still better than most, but when there is much better out there for free or very little, why buy these games?
How are enemies that just walk straight towards you with the smarts of a monster from gauntlet fun?
captainlamppost It wasnt really bad.but it could of been better if the added better enemies and harder to kill
captainlamppost take a look at Starship troopers :D i used to love that game!
Gábor Négyesi Yeah. Too bad it only works on Windows XP.
captainlamppost Have you ever played Serious Sam?
And loved it, but that drives itself from it humour, not trying to be anything else. Plus it like that because it came from a earlier age. I remember when Halo came out and it was such a shock when the enemies seemed to used actual tactics and try to dodge, flank and stay alive in general, even then they followed ( eventually) predicable patterns.
Whenever these monsters attack the Benny Hill theme should be playing.
The music sounds like it's a cut above the usual stuff
The most heinous opening insult yet.
Some of the concepts are really interesting, but they need to be in a better made game. I think less of a focus on combat and more on exploration and mystery solving would have helped...wouldn't have been enough to make it a good game, though.
Makes me think back to Cold Fear on the PS2 where you have (limited) free roaming in a horror environment.
finally! AN INTRO THAT SUITS US THE WORST! GOD SAVE THE JIM-QUEEN!
Can you play this game using the Occulus Rift? Pretty sure I played this (Or something that looked JUST like this) awhile back at Play Blackpool. Game itself didn't have much in terms of "fun" or even stuff to do, but DAMN was it scary with VR and a good headset!
Alex Rowlinson Aftermath is for VR. This could be but the UDK doesn't support it properly.
I love how people basically wrote entire paragraphs in their own blood before being devoured completely, pretty neatly also. The thought of such a scenario is just morbidly funny to me.
That music at the start is actually great. Does anyone know if was licensed or something written for the game? Their website turns up nothing.
Joey Groves yep. original.
those messages scrawled in blood on the walls are a little too calm and sensical if you ask me.
HASEnoncorperated it was written by emos. They are well practiced.
tehf00n
i guess that makes sense.
The aliens look almost like giant fleas, strange.
20:30 is that what this infection does to people?
i spotted 3 types of enemies that resemble enemies in the Halo franchise, to be exact: enemies among -> The Flood
This brought back memories of system shock 2.
Why is the healthbar shaking?
Cause it was scared
These are the same developers who messaged me saying that because I wasn't using the most recent patch by the time I uploaded the video, my criticisms were invalid because it was a whole new experience or something a week later.
Hey Jim, Did you manage beat my game yet?
I have Given you a year to beat my Ghostship Game Jim, Do you have what it takes to beat Starfighter origins Origins which releases Next Tuesday? Or will you make the game look as bad as you skill level :)
give it up dude
This ones pretty good as these things go
I don't know if I should be offended by being called "Donald Trump's political adviser".
Well... not anymore!
You'd be in the white house hahahahahah
Wait, what are eggs from the movie Aliens doing here?
Why is a Death Glider landing on a Battlestar?
4:10 - If you look to the left, you will see the result of Bob's late night curry...
The aliens look like giant fleas
That beginning voiceover sounded a hell of a lot like Tom Cruise.
I feel like this isn't as bad as it could be. At least they tried, unlike most of the shit Jim is forced to review.
5:13 - Is it weird that I was beatboxing over the sound of the laser gun: I don't even listen to rap or techno... O.o
I mean, it looks a lot more competent than most of what you show on this channel :P
What's the point of buying this over Natural Selection 2? NS2 is also 5 bucks last I checked
I've certainly seen a lot worse....... But I've also seen a lot better....... at least the environment and objects and such look decent.
So Dr. Polito is waiting for you on deck 2?
Why does the footage look sped up like that?
You were just in the armory and got pretty much every weapon and you pull out a pistol at the end?
Was that voice in the intro recorded in another room?
Is it just me, or is the space bug movement really glitchy?
A great deal has changed, looks way way better, about 10x better by my estimation
still looks like shit though
Paddy Meehan in a year or two this could be decent
Paddy Meehan I actually really like the idea of a Doom-like randomly generated horror survival game.
Though this isn't really horror, just crumby shooter.
Paddy Meehan You can only polish a turd so much.
It's still got a lot of cultists chanting its praise but I personally did not find it enjoyable as is. They map layout or mission objectives/events isn't even random, just the enemies that spawn.
This requires some polish, but other than that it is a really nice breath of fresh air considering the other indies we are getting recently.
You'd think they'd send the soldiers in *with* weapons.
"Time is of the essence" what is this, Master Chef, known from TV, and Cortana, known from windows 10?!?
the shooting at around 5:20 sounds likea dubstep song
This is kind of interesting. It's like Bioshock meets system shock meets Alien Isolation. I might give it a try.
Seems like they really want to be Dead Space and Alien Isolation without understanding what made either of them good
Much better than most games he reviews, at least~~~
Is it just me or does the computer's voice sound exactly the same as the voice in Oolite?
***** I recognize the voice too, but I've never heard of or played Oolite. lol
djhart25 Must be some voice system that you can purchase for cheap or something. You should try out Oolite now that we're talking about it, it's a slightly modernized free version of the space sim classic Elite, with mod support. Fully free to play, meaning there's no paid content whatsoever.
***** ooohh I will definitely do that, been a fan of Elite for a while, but haven't been able to dish out full price for E:D. Thanks for the heads up!
Jim, I've put up with a lot of your intro insults, I've actually even laughed often, but this time you've gone too far, buddy!
This isn't too bad. Unless it's all assets, this looks like a decently solid game. Of course it needs work, but it actually has some potential.
When is this game going to include a real objective, or one at all?
Other than the animation clearly being a bit janky it's hard to be against this
im assuming this is a small dev team? and there first game?
yeah its not too bad
Duckboy Jacob Yeah just 1 guy :)
that is a lot of kickback for a laser weapon
This game just makes me want to play dead space again
So basically, this is a remake of this dev's 1st game that came out a year earlier which uses pretty much identical assets.
This game doesn't even look too bad. If the developer(s) ever read this, here's my take:
Pros:
-Other than the enemies and the intro being a little off, it genuinely looks solid visually.
Cons:
-Gun models are probably a little too big.
