Charlie was a truly flawed character what with his womanizing, rampant alcoholism and refusal to acknowledge that he had a lot of issues, but he still cared about his family and friends deeply and did try to better himself when he found the right woman at times during the show. That made him a very relatable character for a lot of folks, seeing such a flawed human being trying to better himself And then there's Walden. His biggest issue was being kind of arrogant and an Oedipus complex, the latter of which is particularly difficult for folks to relate to, and I think that's why while Walden was a good character, he simply isn't as loved as Charlie is. You can't relate to Walden as much as you did Charlie
