Charlie is a very good brother and his family takes advantage of him. . People got this unrealistic idea that anyone would let a grown man and his son live with them for years even it is was there brother. That rarely happens in real life. I'm surprised it never occurred to Alen to appeal the terms of his divorce. I'd say that a pretty good case could be made that Judith's lawyer should have recused herself from the case, due to being too emotionally involved... seeing as how Alen only got screwed because she was pissed that Charlie dumped her. Arent there rules and such about that?
Clayton in theory, yes. Attorneys and judges in particular are supposed to be impartial, acting only in their clients interest due to being payed. In practice however, since the attorney needs to be in the side of their client, there is no better motivation than non-financial.

"so she wont stop complaining to quicken the process". yet had he started complaining he would not have gotten more money, he had gotten less as punishment. thats how it works. germany btw, should be the same for the US
