The asking price was $1,000 (dealer/Jake). Charlie (the buyer) suggested $500. Alan (broker/negotiator) instructed the dealer to "split the difference" (500÷2= 250), that is to be added to the suggested price, for a total of $750.
The dealer (Jake) cost both of them $500, that Charlie was happy to save. After the broker's fee, Jake was lucky if he had $100 left.

In other words the official story is rarely the whole story and often it's a complete story front to back lacking anything based on truth at all.
