You didn't have to send the engine to the machine shop?

Thank you! This is an excellent video. After much searching to no avail, I finally find the TU engine's cylinder block timing hole, clearly shown, thanks to you. For this alone you receive my 10/10. :-)

The square tool for the timing belt tensioner...
It's actually the same size as the sump plug, so the same tool can be used.
The bolts tying the exhaust manifold to the downtube tends to be a rusted mess, so spraying them with penetrating oil of some sort a few times the day before you start the job is a good idea.
On my Berlingo, I removed the coil pack first, then removed the throttle wire and bracket holding it afterwards. No need to mess with counting the grooves.
(A lot of the wires and tubing you remove on the car in the video can be left in place on the Berlingo)
When lifting the top lid, be careful about the two spacers that goes between the lid and the 'splash guard'. They have a distressing habit of either ending up between the rockers, or on the floor, directly under the car.
I wish I knew about the oven cleaner trick when I did this on my Berlingo...
As you write, bolts can be reused if they're not too stretched, but new bolts are cheap, and comes with most good kits. (If only one bolt is stretched too much, all needs to be replaced) Why risk a bolt shearing off in the block? Or thrashing the threads...
I notice this engine is a 'pre 2003' model. They introduced revision with an auto-tensioner in 2003. (the belt and water pumps are different on the revised model. Just a note to people to check this before ordering)
I can't see any mention of the fuel injectors or the High-Pressure reservoir?
Quick tips for anyone doing this job: Leave them in place!
Only unhook the fuel line(s) from the reservoir. The green plug 'under' the inlet manifold(3 prongs) is the only cable needed to disconnect the injectors from the wiring loom. If you do remove the reservoir(the long plastic tube across the injectors), you have to replace the seals. So leave them well enough alone.
Your torque angle gauge is better than mine... Can we get a brand/model name?
TU3 JP engines are notoriously difficult when it comes to bleeding the coolant system for trapped air. It REALLY helps to jack up the front lefthand corner...
Jack it high, then a bit higher still... The top of the cavity around the cylinders is slightly higher than the connecting passage to the thermostat housing where the bleed screw is situated.

Thanks for taking the time to explain this problem, only small thing missing was how to bleed the system after you re-fill as the expansion bottle is not highest point in engine and I think there is a technique you must know about. 5 stars!!

Hello Sir.My 206 1.4 2003 was in Head Gasket repair 2 months ago and imo it was the 1st time when HG blowned in this Car and it's been driven 227k Km atm.My question is that what u think, should new the HG,new Timing belt and new Water Pump last with a carefully driving n regular oil changing etc next 5 years cos like ya say,Head Gasket blownings are well known issues in 206 1.4?Ill like my car in overall but i think it's better to sold asap if HG will blown again soon so that's why ill ask this question cos im not a expert for fixing cars 🤔 When over heating etc started,i thought that i just need to change new Thermostat and took the extra Air out of cooler but the reason was ofc my biggest fear,HG fked up and i could not fix it myself so a local garage fix it and it wasnt a cheap one 😤 Btw ur video for changing HG is best what i have seen in YT and i learn more about this difficult and much work repair than i learn all the others videos in total so keep up the good work Mate 👍👌 Sorry for a crappy English ✌

Hi, the video is from 2014 and now we have 2019. I just come back from holidays in Greece, 7500 km to drive. The gasket is still fine. The reason that there are no new 206 videos is easy, there wasn't something to do on the car. Greetings Jürgen

@@irina25661 Ok thanks for a reply mate and good that ur H&G is still working fine 👍 But my question was that should a new H&G after a professional repair, last like 5 years from now with a every year oil changing etc regular repairs or is it a normal that H&G will blown again, without my own fould cos it's kinda normal issue in 206 1.4? 🤔 Sorry for asking this question again Sir but ur a very skilled guy for fixing cars and im kinda noob atm but im trying to get in a Car Repair education School what starts in January 2020 and ill hope that i will be even close that skilled for fixing cars what you are in the future but it's gonna take a long long time for learning how to do big operations like a Head Gasket fixing etc 🤔 Greetings from Finland ✌👍

Interesting thing is that you used old bolts when tightening the cylinder head. I saw various mechanics doing gasket replacement and they usually use new bolts, because the engine was overheated and the bolts might be damaged, over tensioned and might not work properly. I also noticed, that the head was not resurfaced, but just cleaned mechanically with scraper or some kind of tool and it might also be the thing, that head surface was affected by temperature and it might not be smooth.

+Erikas Grigorjevas Hi, where from you got the idea that I used the old bolts? At 17:12 you see the package with the new bolts. By the way, Peugeot allows to reuse the bolts as long their length hasn't increased by more than 1 mm. I measured all bolts, all have been within this limit. Where from you got the idea, that the engine has been overheatet? The head has to be machined only when it isn't anymore in the limits.

Think I can rule out a head gasket failure. My rocker gasket has perished and leaks all over. There is a hissing, so the vacuum is suffering loss. I'm guessing this is drawing in cold moist air into my rocker cover and causing slightly milky oil (sump oil is clean, no engine overheat and coolant isn't going down). Wondering if the TU3 engine has a PCV valve somewhere as it might need testing to make sure it didn't cause the rocker seal to blow?

Hello Irina, congratulations for ur tutorial, but one question please : according to all procedures, the tightening torque for the cylinder head should be 240° for the TU3JP. But... the gasket from Erling and the notice says 120°.... I'm lost with these 2 informations. Can you contact me please ? I just did it yesterday, and I put 20 Nm + 120° like you... but I'm afraid to mistake... Thanks for ur help.

Very good and informative video! A mechanic found a small amount of oil in the cooling systems expansion tank of my 206 (with the same engine), but the oil is still perfectly clean, with no trace of coolant. Would you say the car is safe to drive, as long as I regularly monitor the quality and level of the oil? I will have the head gasket done eventually, But I'd like to wait until I get the car MOT tested a cpl of months from now, and then have all the possible faults fixed at the same time.

Hi, hard to say. At the head gasket, the exhaust, the water and the oil comes together. The symptoms depend on the place where the gasket is broken. For example when the rings at the cylinder wall have a leak you observe exhaust bubbles in the reservoir of the cooling liquid.
Tyoically the gasket of the 1.4l engine breaks between the oil and the water system. The oil pressure is most time higher when the pressure in water, thus the oil flows in the water, but when the engine is coolig down after stopping it, there is still pressure in the water system but the oil has no pressure at all. Now the water flows in the oil! A little water in the oil will evaporate when the oil remperature comes over 100°C, while the oil in the water will accummulate. If you drive long distances you'll find always more oil in the water when vice versa. If you drive short distances the water in the oil has no chance to evaporate.
Anyhow the leak wiill become soon larger and when you find water in the oil you start to kill the engine. Some weeks you may wait and observe. At the moment you'll find the water in the oil, you must change the gasket.
      Greetings Jürgen

      Dear Jurgen,
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions! From you answer I understand, that if I want to be safe, I should have the head gasket changed rather sooner than later, and if/when I find traces of coolant in the oil, I must get it done immediately. I think I also will use the car as little as possible, until I get it done.
You're being very helpful with your videos and comments. Cheers!
      best regards,
      Axel

What do you think about replacing old head bolts with a new ones one by one (Unscrew old one (starting from the middle (with the same sequence as on the video)), screw new one with 20 Nm -> 120 angle -> 120 angle) and do the same to the rest 9 bolts? Maybe it will stop the leak. My head is leaking and I could screw head bolts by couple of mm using 85 Nm torque (it means that bolts are loosen! I'm sure there should be more than 100 Nm). Maybe head gasket is OK, but bolts are loosen. It's an old car and I just want to stop the leak with the cheapest option. If it won't work, then it's going to be sold to scrap. I'm waiting for your reply!

Is the valve clearance adjustment necessary when changing the head gasket & timing belt? If so, why?
Some posts have suggested it shouldn't be necessary. However, is it just a case of they are easily accessible therefore you might as well check them.

hello, i've watched several of your videos, and i enjoy seeing how you learn us other doing the stuff ourself :) the headgasket on our TU3JP got to leak, a little oil in the cooling liquid and a bit more out on the block, it will get fixed in a month or 2. would you say its safw to drive with it? i got told the current leak wont make it fail M.O.T.

Hi, I would drive as less as possible. The oil in the cooling liquid isn't the problem, but when the water comes in the oil, you kill the engine. Killing the engine is no problem for the M.O.T., but for you. Greetings, Jürgen

Which one should I pick ?
Reinz 1.3 mm thick head gasket
Reinz 1.5 mm thick head gasket
Ajusa 1.25 mm thick head gasket
Ajusa 1.6 mm thick head gasket

Hi, unfortunatelly I don't know the thickness of the orignal gasket. For me the 1,3 and the 1,25 are identical let's call them the thin gasket. The same for the 1,5 and 1.6 mm gaskets, let 's call them the thick gasket. If the engine is not machined (milling or grinding) you should use the thin one. If the head is machined you may use the thick gasket. Greetings, Jürgen
