Whoa, you're 6' 7" !?! Curtis, that changes everything. Thanks for the great look into the sausage making. Humble, thoughtful, insightful. And enormously tall. Each video I watch reveals something new and valuable. Thanks.
It means I don't have to bring an apple box to set as often. 😉
wohoo, dream bags and stuff. All the best and perfect sound at your shoots!
Thanks Florian! Went well. 👍
Wow nice kit Curtis I loved seeing your setup.
Thanks! 👍
this was very cool to see. thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the feedback!
I've always wondered what your prep looked like for a shoot/job. Very impressive...not only the equipment, but your discipline....backups for the backup. Curtis, thank you for the inside look. I hope you continue to create a lot of content. I'm sure that you hear this a lot form others...but, anytime I have any type of audio-related question (gear/technique), your are my first search online...and typically my only search.
Keep up the great work, man!
PS It's awesome to see that you're still actively involved in the comments section of these videos. There's always so many golden nuggets in the comment section. Responding to the numerous comments must be time-consuming. Can't thank you enough...
Thanks much, Southpaw Autoworks! The shoot for Orange County Choppers went well and glad to hear that looking over the packing list was helpful. Keep making great sound!
Wow! That’s a lot of stuff to charge, manage and know how to use. Love to hear about your experience of working on a live reality show. You’ve got a lot of guts. 😁
It was nuts. Plan on that story soon.
I love this so much!!
👍
Nice looking kit Curtis, Have a great shoot!
Thanks Michael, went well and gave me a new appreciation for mixers who work reality TV jobs. 🥵
Great list!
🙏
Really nice video Curtis, show how complicated and expensive sound can be
All the best with you job tomorrow dude.
Thanks! The shoot went reasonably well - will have another update as a debrief.
very helpful,thanks curtis!
Thanks Leonard!
Great video Curtis! I doesn't matter if you shoot from your phone, its the content that counts.
👍
Wow, hello Curtis from 4 years ago. Still a great video of what to expect to pack for an in the field sound work. Good to see you.
Hi Vincent! Thanks for stopping by!
Hey Curtis, I get pretty nervous night before any gig. My last one was brutal. Lots of booming, in the sun for hours. Best to you, and hope you have a successful gig
I do as well, but preparation helps quell the nerves. The shoot went well - thanks for the best wishes!
Hi Curtis,
I remember watching your Aperture Light Reviews, and you would end your videos saying something like "...Lighting and Sound for Video"; or in other videos you would say that you, "Care a lot about sound". I just thought you were a video guy that understood that sound was important. Years later, (just a few months ago), I learned that you were a professional sound guy. That puts you in a whole different league from a video guy that cares a lot about sound! That's also why I bought your courses; I wanted to learn sound from a professional sound guy!
Talk to you later.
Mathew
At my day job, I work with a group of video producers. A few times a year, I freelance for location sound jobs.
What a pro. 2x field mixers!!!
Just trying to deliver what the client needs. :)
That's how I do it too: Lay it all out into a pile the night before. In some cases, I even run through setting up and taking down to make sure no pieces are missing. When you're certain it's all there, pack it up.
Good idea to add the setup step.
@@curtisjudd Almost every time, I notice something that will make for a better shoot or something almost forgotten. I don't do it for everything a=and every shoot, but for anything new I will be trying, anything I rarely use, etc. Piecing it together the night before makes me slicker on set.
loved the sandals a lot
🩴
@@curtisjudd just joking … great video as usual
Nice brother!
👍
Thanks for all these videos.
First, I'm surprised to learn you're not living in Hollywood. Thought you would have been in Hollywood working with all the big directors.
Are you able to reveal what show you were recording for in this video, and how your experience went?
Hi Sean, this was for American Chopper. I grew up about 30 miles from Hollywood but now live near Park City, Utah.
YOU GOT A SCORPIO!! What were you thinking 😂🤑. OH, you’re borrowing it... never mind.
Haha haha! Just borrowing it my friend. 🙃
@@LearnLightAndSoundSessions was going to say the same thing "you got the Scorpio" were you able to test the sound from it vs your 633. i own the 664 but thinking about the Scorpio vs the 688.
@@xenesy4472 It is really close. I don't have any complaints about the sound of the 633 and the Scorpio sounded just as good, maybe better? So hard to tell. Micheal Wynn said he was able to hear a little bit of a difference: ruclips.net/video/cLxzgdzm7v8/видео.html
They’re paying you to reliably deliver sound. You could not say it better!
👍
I don’t know if I’m Bias but,... I get defensive seeing dislikes on Curtis HELPFUL TIPS OR VIEW ON PRODUCT. Like, did you hit dislike because you have none of the gear in the video? did you hit dislike because you searched PURSE AND BAG FOR YOUR WIFE and Orca bag brought you here? Like what gives them energy to make their brain 🧠 waist muscle to press the dislike button? You are the beat Curtis!!!! Peace
Thanks Franklyn. Don't worry about the those people. In some cases they probably had different expectations about what the video would be. And in some cases, they're just angry for one reason or another. We'll just keep learning and getting better, regardless of what they do.
Hope you had a good shoot and didn't have to use the scorpio with wireless go! BTW, can you exploit the rtn of the 633 and record 8 channels that way?
Hahaha! Did not end up falling back to the Wireless GOs. I don't see a way to "arm" the camera return. I might be missing that.
Hi There! You've got a really nice Channel. Could you please make a revue about new sony UWP-D series?
Thanks! Yes, if somebody will send me one, I'll definitely review it.
Hey Curtis! I think this is called 'Knolling', I didn't hear you mention it in the video, but I might have missed it. Theres a great subreddit where people just lay out entire packs like this, from camera gear to climbing gear to food. Great video!
I just got a great deal on 2x Lectro 200 series.. Obviously I'm working on a budget. Do you think I could get by on Tram Tr50's for a while? Until I find steady work to upgrade?
Thanks Terence - good to know on "Knolling"! Congrats on the Lectrosonics and yes, Tram TR50s should do nicely. They're voiced for hiding under clothing so should work well if that's your plan.
Curtis Judd Audio “Knolling”! There’s a great subreddit with examples! I’ll either being doing Interviews or Short Films, so I think the TR50s are a great place to start. Thanks again for all your awesome content! I assembled my kit with guidance from your videos! Zoom F8n/RodeNTG2/lectro200’s wireless. It’s old and cheap, but it’s quality stuff!
Would my mic pre 3 fit correctly in that blue bag? I ordered the K-tec bag for mic pre 3 but im not sure it has shoulder straps where I can wear the bag down low in the middle like most.
Hi Jeff, the Orca bag here is too big for the MixPre-3. You might look at this one instead: bhpho.to/2nJIypl

Hi Curtis, could you share with us what brand of rechargeable AA batteries you recommend for your wireless mics? Thanks
Hi Jose, in the past I used eneloop and envelop pro but recently added some Ikea AA rechargeables and they've been great - last a little bit longer. We'll see how long they hold up but so far, so good.
Is the OR-30 wide enough for mixpre 10 with xlr cables coming in both sides ? Would you recommend getting the bigger bag OR-32 . Thanks,
Yes, I ended up using the OR-30 and the MixPre-10T for this shoot. It is a good fit with just enough room on the sides for the cables and to access the headphone volume/menu encoder knob.
Dear Judd. Please advice: Which would be the low budget audio equipment that a blogger or a youtuber may have? Mic an recorder, or mic connected to cam... Thanks!
For vlogging, audio quality is generally not as critical and mobility is so I'd just use a RODE VideoMic Pro or something similar.
for a reality show is there enough time to fine tune things like which mic? or is it jump in the car, jump out the car, run into firehydrent
Not usually, but I knew that one of the talent was going to be Paul Teutel Sr. of American Chopper who has a deep, dark voice. So I opted to use the DPA 4160 on him. Then I could assess the sound of the others voices for about 10 seconds while I was prepping to wire them up. So no, you don't generally get time to try different mics, but if you know the characteristics of each mic, you can at least try to make an educated choice when wiring them up.
Hey Curtis, i recently started to watch your videos, and they are the best. Do you recommend owning more than one boompole?
Hi Hector, if you're doing location or production sound full time, eventually, yes. I own a few so that I can put them on c-stands for multi person interviews.
@Curtis Judd thanks, it makes sense. Thanks Curtis ive learned so much from you. I love what im doing, and your videos have helped a lot.
Hi Curtis, can you put in the description a list of all this equip? Thanks in advance. 👍🏻🔝
Yes, linked most everything there now. Thanks Warner.
Curtis Judd Audio thanks! 🔝
Great video! On a hired gig like this... how do they get the audio files? Do they provide memory cards? Or do they transfer files from yours? Also... when is the Zoom F6 shipping? I'm eagerly awaiting your review after seeing your preview a couple months ago!!! :)
Hi Michael, thanks! It depends on the job. Usually on small crew jobs like this, the producer or director offloads my card to their laptop after the shoot. On other occasions I've sent the files to them when I get home from the job that night via a large file transfer service or via Google Drive. On one occasion, I gave the producer my SD card.
I have heard that Zoom has run into an issue with one of the physical components so the new ship date will be later this year once they get the issue worked out and bring up production.
Curtis Judd Same workflow here for handing off files, but when a producer offers me a card I tell them I cannot use an unknown card in my recorder but I can copy my files to their card at end of day. Did that just last week. Takes maybe 15 minutes but worth it to not worry about if their card will screw up my recorder.
Curtis Judd I was asked exactly one time what gear I had. They were glad to hear I had Sound Devices. They said they had someone the week prior who had a Zoom something and things did not go well. More a reflection on the person’s experience than the gear is my guess.
@@RallenMan Good point. I've never had anyone give me a card to use, but that's a great point. Aside from the risk of the card damaging your mixer, I'd be worried that an untested card would be compatible. Even cards with very fast specs can sometimes have problems.
For myself I usually offload to their laptop if available, otherwise I'll upload to my Google Drive once home then email them a link.
I almost NEVER hand them my SD card. Too much hassle getting the card back
Have learned those lessons the hard way.
Does working on the tentacle sync ever run into any trouble if your cam crew works off mirrorless cameras that don't have a dedicated timecode input? I know not a lot of houses in my area have the tentacle software so I'm worried they can't work with my information fed into Sony a7s
Hi Timothy, I just bring those along to give the director the option to use them. For the jobs I do, I'd say we end up using thing 1 out of 5 times and usually when I'm part of the post team for the exact reason you state.
@@LearnLightAndSoundSessions on times you're not using the tentacle sync, how then would you work it out? A camera hop and leaving it to softwares like plural eyes to sync?
I bring a slate and the post team syncs using pluraleyes or just the sync feature in the editing app they use. On yesterday's shoot, we finished the day with about 30 clips. The production team opted not to use timecode so the post team will probably just use Premiere to sync the clips one by one.
@@LearnLightAndSoundSessions Thank you so much for sharing :)
Resolve (free) and Avid can read audio TC, so that's an option as well. Resolve requires to restart after updating the TC before syncing the clips (or else the TC will be wrong) and strips the metadata on aaf export unfortunately.
Which bag in that 10T in?
That's the Orca OR-30: bhpho.to/2BfQ3Wh
Perhaps a dumb question but, do you charge a "rent" fee for the equipment used/brought to set?
Or do you charge a standard rate and take whatever gear you deem necessary for the job?
Also, how do you deal with insurance? -- Does production always take care of it, or do you have to include it in your rate and contract it by yourself?
>>Perhaps a dumb question but, do you charge a "rent" fee for the equipment used/brought to set?
Definitely charge for the kit for every job. For small location jobs, it ranges from $100 - $300 per day. It is more expensive when I need to rent additional equipment, usually wireless.
@@curtisjudd errr... $100/day isn't even close to the kit fee professional sound mixers in the USA are meant to be charging
@@SoundSpeeding From your perspective, what should I charge in Utah (not a lot of union jobs here) for a one-day job with a boom and two wireless lavs, no timecode, no IFB?
@@curtisjudd from the zillions of hours I've spent hanging out on the sound forums then what the Americans seem to charge as their usual full rates are $600 to $650 per day (for a 10hr day that is, obviously a 12 or 14hr day is more. And often enough charged as Portal to Portal) plus $250 to $350 / day rental for a basic sound package of mixer/recorder + boom + 2x lavs. (obviously camera hops, TC, Comteks, etc all would significantly increase that)
Have you not used RF antenas in that reality shoot?
We were in close proximity the entire time as I worked from a bag for this shoot. On my cart setup, I have an LPDA and di-pole.
howdo u set focus in the 4k , ur subjects dont move?
I'm not operating camera, I'm recording sound. 👍
Hmmm..... you said none of your other recorders had EQ, but I thought for a moment that your 633 had EQ options? (I know the 664 doesn't! But thought the newer 6 series can with the CL-12)
Went to go double check my theory.... and, NOPE! You're right the 633 can't. Only the 688 :-(
My Zaxcom Maxx though can do EQ within the recorder itself (doesn't need a CL-12 equivalent like the 688 does, as the 688 can't do EQ without the CL-12 attached. But I believe the standalone Scorpio can do EQ itself? Progress!).
The Scorpio can indeed!
Did u buy the Scorpio Curtis!? Hehehe
Not cheap!
No, not yet at least. 😀
According to Siri, 6'7" is approximately 2metres 1cm tall. Yes. That's tall. Very tall.
200.66 cm to be more precise. But at one point Curtis “only” claimed to be 6’6”, so maybe he's still growing? (Or wearing thicker soles these days?)
Anyway, 2m is very tall, of course, but not freakishly so, I think. I've personally met men up to 230cm (7’7”).
One was a young man working as a bouncer at festivals, and he was VERY broad shouldered and extremely muscular and sturdily built and also somewhat overweight, so next to him one felt like a small child! But sadly people of such extreme size often die young.
A less extreme was the internationally acclaimed bass singer Ulrik Cold, with whom I talked a few times. In spite of his name he had a very warm personality. He was 208cm or about 6’10” (still too tall imo). He sang the part of Sarastro in Ingmar Bergman's famous 1975 film version of Mozart's opera The Magic Flute, or “Trollflöjten” in Swedish.
Perfect for operating a boom mic. 😉
@@skakdosmer It depends on how compressed my spine is at the time of measurement. Most say 6'7". One time two years ago, a "medical professional" claimed 6'7" and 4/10ths. 😀
Wow! Yes, we’re normally at our tallest just when we get out of bed after a long night of good sleep, and at our shortest just before bedtime after a long hard day. The difference could be over an inch.
@@LearnLightAndSoundSessions I'm "only" 1.9m (6' 3") and yet today there was on scene which I was too short for :-( And I used an apple box for it.
"How do you get jobs? Well, you need to have a Sound Devices recorder"
That hasn't been my experience, but for some, it has been.
Perhaps the people you work with know you well enough to have confidence you will show up with Sound Devices...
dang at 6'7"...
Since I don't really play basketball, at least it is an advantage for booming a mic. 😉
