4K CABVIEW: Sunny spring afternoon on the Bergen Line hauling freight

  • It's a sunny spring afternoon on the Bergen Line and today I'm hauling a freight train from the Terminal in Bergen to Ål, where it will be a crew change. The train will continue to Alnabru freight terminal in Oslo. Composition of the train is:
2x Bombardier TRAXX F160 AC3, 17 cars totalling 616m and 1343 tonns. Maximum speed allowed with this composition is 100km/h.
The shift starts at 5pm at the Terminal in Bergen where we assemble the tran and do the break testing before heading off. Departure time is 7:12pm and arrival at Ål is 11:08pm. This time of year it never gets really dark in Norway.
The big difference in this video compared to others I have done, is that you get to see the coupling between loco and cars and not to mention that I've swapped out the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K for a Sony FX3. A huge difference when it comes to noise and visibility in the tunnels. There shalt never be darkness again.

Wow simply wow. The image quality is spectacular. So good to see the route in better weather and, after so long with various amounts of lock down, with more people out and about. The time to record and edit this alone must have been substantial, without the problems getting this to upload. The scenery is as stunning as ever of course, but in even more detail. Thanks so much for doing this.

Yep. The passenger numbers on the line is still 10% lower than before the pandemic. But things are getting better. Now lets hope the spiraling inflation and interests don't destroys everything

Fantastic new quality ! I think I have now watched all your older videos, and enjoyed them immensely. Thank you for doing all this work.
I'm proud to be a new supporting member. My brother (just retired), father and grandfather all drove trains in Germany. Josef drove steam, Hans electric, and Wolfgang electric and diesel. No FLIRT, they seem to prefer the Siemens train in Germany.
Riding along next to the "number 1 seat" was always a great experience. Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof was tricky, it's like Oslo Sentralstasjon where you end up sitting right in front of all the people at the terminal, and the Railroad Police frown on ride-alongs. I had always bought a ticket beforehand, which kept me out of trouble with the Deutsche Bahn. Lots of similarities with VY in signaling and train operation. Not at all similar to Norfolk-Southern, which has trains passing near my house every day here in Georgia, USA.
    Ride safe always !(horn blow)

    Hey Christine
Thank you for your new story about the Bergen Railway. From the first to the last minute one could be with you and experience what your passion is. Details such as counting the turns on the screw coupling are anything but trivial when you have almost 1,500 tons. on the hook. Then the ascent from spring into the mountains where winter is at home. After Finse the liberation, now it goes downhill. The train pushes from behind. The incomparable landscape. She steals so much power. The wonderful lighting conditions. I envy and admire you. Stay the way you are and take care of yourself.

Both the BR187 and Eurodual has this capability.
The BR187 has this functionality for use to get to an from tracks without overhead wire, with a last mile battery unit to get out of the workshop without polluting the whole building with exhaust. The Last Mile Functionality is not made to pull whole trains for longer distances.
The Eurodual on the other hand has a full diesel engine as well that we can use when needed. :)

Just a perfect day for photography and video, that late afternoon and evening warm sunlight is just the best. Also the angle of the sun brings out just enough shadows so you really get the feeling of depth. The landscape stuff can be tricky, what the eye sees and what the camera sees can be a lot different.

Great to have another video from you, RCG! And it's cool to start with shunting. Funny, the very first time I heard this, strange to me then, term was in your video from 26 november 2017, "TRAIN DRIVER'S VIEW: Evening information run between Ål and Voss", which still is one of my favourite vids.

Splendid Film. 616 meter and 1343 ton thats quite a monstertrain at Bergensbana. That line is curvy and steep. Its no easy task to drive a train at that size on that line.
    Note:
The first yellow trailer behind the locomotives is a coffe trailer.
If RCG's train would have a breakdown, at least she will have plenty of coffe.
Thats the stoff that keep the railroad going.

Today’s view was fun watching your progress via google maps. When you show the upcoming station, I search for it in and look at where you are on the tracks then try to figure out what direction you are going. Looking for where you go into tunnels and where you come out is challenging. Sometimes I get lost until I see the next station.. lots of fun❣️thank you

Ooh, I love that elevation graph at the beginning. The steep climb from Voss to Myrdal also speaks to the climb from Flåm. I also did not realize that Gol is the point where the climb begins in earnest in the other direction. I had thought that past Ål was where the climb began. Cool! I will be more aware of how everything changes with elevation, now that I know where the sharp ascents and descents are.
The light inside the tunnels - woohoo! All this time you were not in the dark when going through tunnels. 😄

That is a fantastic cab view video, you obviously know how to use your camera equipment very well indeed. That is also an amazing line (Bergen to Oslo) to travel, now on my bucket list! I've travelled on the Flam line a long time ago so the scenery around Mydal was familiar. Bright sunshine in Bergen yard to a snowfield all in one run, and the tunnels were very interesting. Thank you for posting these videos, it was pure magic to watch.

It sure does. There is a huge difference from the BMPCC, both in sensor size and technology. The BMPCC has a Super 35 sized sensor with 6K resolution whilst the Sony FX3 has a 35mm full size sensor with 4K. With a bigger sensor and fewer pixels, more light hit's the pixels :D This gives you much better low light capabilities :D
