American Eagle broke down and towed to Freightliner

- Опубликовано: 28 июл 2020
- We detail the towing of our 2018 American Eagle motorhome to Freightliner because it left us stranded. Second trip in a week for the same DEF problem!
Retired mechanic, 47 years. The world is short of mechanics. We hated working on RVs. So many things can get damaged. Every dealer in our area would charge double the hourly rate of a regular truck. I wish you the very best.
Normally, RV videos are glowing references to how wonderful it is to own one. Nothing ever goes wrong and the world is full of rainbows and unicorns. Thanks for your videos, I will definitely be following you. I will probably stick with hotels.
I must say just stumbled on you site and your calm reaction to all the disasters is Impressive , I’m sure when the camera’s are off there’s a few drinks and some words😂 especially when it scraps leaving with the two truck. You guys are awesome and really make me laugh.
Cheers to you both be safe out there
Good move having your wife ask for help. Amazing how nice those freightliner guys were.
Just found your videos-Wow! The 2 of you deserve an award for your calm collected demeanor! What an ordeal it seems you have had! I’ve had a zillion issues as well but with my jacks on my class a- even came down while driving on the 40! Shop that has it now I told them fix it or blow it up! It’s been there a month! Was at previous shop for 2.5 months! I’ll have to watch the rest of your videos and maybe learn how to take it in stride! Best of luck in your journey!
Lord, As much as I want to be a RV’er, the more horror stories I hear, the less likely I want to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on something that is in the shop all the time. Your 18K bill was a huge eye opener for us.
I can’t believe how calm you guys are. I guess it’s best for your health. You guys look great
How are there no comments in these videos?? They’re hilarious! It’s one nightmare after another. 😂😂
How can ya make this much shit up!🤣
You all probably dont care at all but does someone know of a trick to log back into an instagram account..?
I somehow lost my password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me
Thanks for sharing your experiences. Safe travels on next segment. Fingers crossed for you...
Mate that coach is a damn nightmare! I don’t know how you’ve kept your cool! 🇦🇺🍺🍺
What's really scary is they trade the POS in.. don't blame them... but the place they trade it in puts the POS on the market.. did the POS get fixed?? Doubt it. OMG!!!
God you guys are a damn sight calmer than I'd be.
You both seem like an intelligent articulate couple, you should have asked someone in the trucking business about the horrible reliability factor that accompanies most diesel engines equipped with DEF coaches 2007 and older are more dependable as they do not have this equipment , which has been a major failure point for big diesel trucks since 2008 ,you will notice that this is reflected in the resale value as it is common to see an older higher mileage Truck of similar specs ,selling for more than say a newer 2008 and up.Thankyou for sharing get a 2007 or older lightly used coach and you will be ahead of the game.
We read all the horror stories and were looking for a pre DEF Prevost at one point. We decided we were more concerned about buying an aging RV more than the DEF. Found out now that we can bypass the DEF sensor pretty easily. (not that we would do anything like that of course!)
I can't believe you bought a second American Eagle.
Almost - we got lucky!
Am learning vicariously through you. I feel like I owe you thousands in money saved!
I was just offered a 2021 American heritage coach at an incredible price with 7K miles. I told him, watch this couples videos and that should give you a good guess as to my answer.
Thank you for making these videos and saving us a lot of money and headaches.
Trying to make a deal for a 2017 newmar Essex
Just remember, American Coach/Fleetwood, doesn’t make the engine or def system. A Newmar can have def problems too. Wish you the best of luck!
Sounds like to me Freightliner is a pain to work with! Something I will have to look into when it's my time to make the plunge! You two are cool, so level headed! I hope to meet you guys one of these days!
Yes freight are not for long haul and I'm a truck driver I have a kenworth
Just took American Eagle off my list. Hope things get better for you guys and Thank you for the video. I think you may have just saved us a ton of money and even more important some peace of mind!
This channel makes me never want to own an RV.
Angel & Mike...Good Luck! LOL
Noone should ever have to experience this with a new RV. If that was mine i would have torched it along the side of the road. You have more patience then me thats for sure!
They are spectacular.
And also happy travels this is what I want to do when I retire
Love your videos. Just started watching them.
Angie @ 5:19 is the best part of this video🥰🥰🥰
So sorry about all the problems you guys have had with motorhomes. Although one expects to have bugs that need to be worked out with any new unit, this is just crazy. We bought a new Fleetwood Southwind back in the mid 90's and it was a complete lemon. Our next new motorhome was a Tiffin Phaeton and it was a very good unit. It was a nice diesel motorhome that was not overly expensive. Tiffin is a good manufacturer and has fantastic customer service, but prices for their units have gotten more and more expensive and what was once a very good reasonably priced unit (Phaeton) is now too expensive for us. We are in the market for another motorhome and had considered a late model American Eagle, but now, we're not too sure about that either. I've noticed that many dealers and manufacturers are all customer oriented until after the sale. Then, it's like they never knew you. One of these days, that sort of thinking as well as sub par workmanship is going to backfire and customers are going to insist on better. As it is now, it's hit or miss. There is good and bad out there. If and when you buy another motorhome, think about a Tiffin or a Newmar. Both have great reputations. Newmar was recently bought by Winnebago but hopefully the great customer service will continue there also.
I wish you guys the best and hopefully you will be able to get out there and enjoy a motorhome relatively free of defects...soon.
OMG! You guys really should write book on your travels.
Newell coach makers are the top dogs in the RV industry but expensive. From what I gathered, Newell has a good track record on fixing their rigs, even old ones.
Prevost conversions too. In fact, as Prevosts are built as commercial busses on their "million mile" chassis, I would choose one of them over a Newell. JMO
If my wife and I ever pull the trigger, I would opt for a simpler build, without slides, and with the famous Detroit Diesel Series 60 engine.
Ahhhh. You guys are so calm and cool.
Sorry to hear of your trials and tribulations with yet another motorcoach.....You guys might take it over to REV in Alvarado Texas as they are a well regarded American (and other) Coach service center..good luck!
Alvarado...the city built around RV dealerships lol
I have watched all of your videos now. You guys do really awesomely calm. If it has happened to me, I probably screaming and kicking some tires. I am looking forward to see on Tiffin's.
As my Grandma would say...if you didn't have bad luck you wouldn't have any luck at all. Wow.
OMG! In the freaking mountains too!
Wow ! You’re having such bad luck. Hopefully things go smoothly from now on
have the wiring checked from the DEF tank sensor level to the main computer hook up, we have found frayed wiring in the system that causes incorrect level readings, so it will be usually at bends in the loom
So sorry that you have to deal with this I work for a company called old dominion freight lines we are all over the United States and we have the same issues as you We have to frequently go through a regeneration process and that cleans the filters out if the filters are to far gone your sol and have to be towed this is one of the issues with def and their are more alot of drivers that own their trucks bypass the def system something to think about once your warranty expires
Dang it , break downs roadside are dangerous , maybe just trade it in , I'm sure it has everything but if it don't work ,😔 Be Safe Best Wishes 🙏
Dang I live 30 min from Gatlinburg and peigon forge I would have love to meet you guys.
Sorry to say it, but trouble you have with a diesel pusher. I don’t know how you can handle all of it the trouble with it all.
Sorry to hear you’re having so much trouble!
I tow plenty of freightliners and had a peterbuilt wrecker the level gauge went bad had to flash the computer to ignore the def level.
Good luck! I would have had freaking out already... it is unbelievable how all those companies just rekt people. They have been making too much money... and don’t care about a single client... it’s all wrong, but I do believe in action and reaction... they will eventually pay for that.
I have never had a tow show up quicker then 8 hours and my last tow I waited 11 hours. So yours is way faster service. Mine was in Arizona. 3 tows one 6 hours one 8 hours and one 11 hours.
I feel so sorry for you guys and your coach, are you allowed to park it near a main Rd with a big sign saying lemon 🍋
So the bottom line...... Don’t buy an American Eagle coach? Reliability is everything for me - especially given the price point for such a bus. Thanks for sharing. $1500 dollars for a tow? I’m out.
1500 tow is typical for any truck that's gonna happen no matter what truck you are in
This is an alarming eye opener. What about those AAA outfits for RVs?. Pay membership & they take care of your road trip RV breakdowns.
As a heavy tow truck company owner and also a x trucker for almost 20 years, I been around semi truck engines for most my adult life.
So I have some experience with diesel truck engines , which is what you have in your pusher.
So when I say this I mean it.
I feel sorry for anyone who buys a modern diesel pusher with def and regen.
It will be the biggest disaster you ever owned.
There is a reason truckers will pay more for a pre emissions truck then a modern emissions engine.
Sell it as fast as you can and never buy another one.
Should have found the company that makes the Engine and have them check seeing it's the engine.
Did you actually run out of DEF? It will do that if you do. If your DEF tank level sensor is bad then it's basically the same thing. Refilling slowly and cycling the key usually does the trick. Normally a laptop with the (I assume you have a Cummins) software can reset the error in 2 seconds. I used to do this with Hino trucks at 250.00 per (and I'm not a professional mechanic).
Make sure the DEF purchased is itself fresh. DEF has an effective shelf life. Just because it's new to you doesn't mean the container was just well dusted.
I’m gonna by a Bentley Convertible and stay at The Ritz.. to save money 😂😂😂. No way I would do what you two are doing! Not just unknown expense but more importantly is lost time and extra stress.
What RV...
Are they towable with wheels on ground hard-on transmission I could be wrong
Have to pull at least one axle or driveline just like any automatic transmission, even tractor trailers
I own trucks DEF is a big deal. Generally its the DEF filter needs cleaning . I would say in your case the DEF got low .
I own a 2017 Entegra Cornerstone i have my DEF filter cleaned yearly the normal charge is $500.00
I get it done at Petro Travel Center
While I do appreciate the amenities and, to some, the luxury that they offer, I was never in the market for these types of vehicles. Just not in the level where I can afford the one that I would actually like to have (like the one in this video). And I realize they are probably the exception, but with all those possible headaches including costs of (non) repair by the actual dealer or manufacturer, who’d want to get one now?
2:04 Oooof!
Oooh gosh….has to be hard to deal with…..plus the extra $$$$$$$$$$. Ouch 🤕
You both have the BEST attitude. One thing after another with these flakey dealers, etc. Was there a leak or something... why did you always have to add fluid? I realize this is behind you.. sure pitty the poor guy who pays thru the nose for this coach. I will avoid anything Freightliner in the future!!
Okay, this brings to mind the old saying...The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
"Heck yeah, we'll do it for ya". Ill give you two reasons why they offered that
thx for sharing. when they tow the class A do they disconnect the driveline?? yall way more chill than I.
Yes, they remove the rear drive axles. It's a pretty easy process.
Sure this is not a remake of Robbin Williams RV
This is what most all camper manufacturers do and dealers that take care of the equipment after the sale they suck we have been there good luck
Heck ya they said, "heck yes" lol
So there is a company Dpf in Columbia SC and they know what they are doing
That is very irritating looks like a fairly new RV what did you guys do with all your stuff inside when it has to go to a workshop for repair? I guess we South Africans would worry more about stuff like that as people steal more in this part of the world
What was the DEF problem all about. There were DEF heads going bad during this time period.
We purchased DEF from a truck stop pump and it was bad.
You have got to be kidding me!
When it comes to towing massive rigs, it is not like ordering an Uber. Nothing goes to schedule when hauling heavy stuff. That sucks that you didn't get the problem solved, but that's life. You can't fix something that doesn't show as broken. Let's not kid ourselves. Cute blonde walks in asking for help will get MUCH more help than a1 dude.
there is a good freightniner dealer in Lima Ohio if you want to try another one sounds like they are all crap shoots at this point
Needs more Angie
You may have a bad def pump.
Insurance does not cover towing?
We didn't take the towing coverage because we had good Sam roadside assistance - which turned out to be crap!
It way cheaper to get an Airbnb than waste time fu… with a motorhome. I know I have one.
So most likely a bad sensor for the def level has set you back thousands of dollars because some morons just reset it
It’s a one man job just super heavy bus bars I operate a heavy wrecker that guy is either old or inexperienced
DO NOT ever buy another coach on a Freightliner chassis!
Did I see you were driving at 75 mph, in an RV?
I would have told that Freightliner HQ guy to give me his personal cell phone number and the next breakdown you would call him direct and let him arrange to get it worked on. And then end the call by asking for the exact spelling of his full name and with the comment that "I know my lawyer is going to ask for that information".
Did they pull one of the axles??
Yes!
My god... That sound when it scraped.... Like nails on a chalk board.... Shit Mike... I would be pissed..
I am glad you can at least laugh about this, but should you show up at the dealer or the freightliner shop with a chainsaw, I for one would ever vote to convict. Hoping things are smoother going forward.
You need to get a lawyer
i can not believe how you guys put up with all the problem that rv, has I would sell it and get a Tesla, then travel the country staying in hotels. I bet it would be much more fun, and way cheaper.
In the big rig world freightliner are throw away trucks.
Why is every pusher on a Freightliner frame .
burn it!
Buy a 5th wheel and a good dually.
Super C are better for towing.
Try a new Rv ,maybe Mercedes Actros Varyo signature🙂😉
Freightliner?drive up and down the interstates of this country and 90 percent of the time its a Freightliner sitting disabled on the side of the road.
I have only seen three of your videos and don't know what your lives were before RVing but don't think you could have been worse off staying at home out of the three video's you have went through two rv,s been kicked out of at least two camps and broke down serval times just too much drama following you around
I would delete that thing.
JoeyT here WOW.....why do these things keep happening to you guys....this SUCKS
Diesels used to be the best. Diesel fuel was cheaper, breakdowns were few and far between and the engines lasted twice as long as a gas engine did. Now, fuel is far more expensive and they break down more than gas engines. And DEF? You can thank the 'greenies' in California for that crap.
If you guys break another one of my RVs I'm going to get mad and send that black guy over
sell sell it. and run dont look back
That tow truck driver absolutely sucked
Blue despair and agony on me deep dark depression excessive misery if it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all....seems to fit yall
Sorry
A free tip for you guys: Do NOT get DEF at the pump! Get it from Walmart, or whoever, in the box. I know it’s not as convenient, but trust me on this.
I’ve driven private-owned coaches (Prevost’s) for 20 years, and what we found is the DEF at the pump gets either diluted or stale, and will give you the issues you’re having.
Thanks - we learned that a little too late!
I operate a heavy wrecker and have a friend that owns a def shop and he refuses to use pump def.
This is BS i know companies like this what a pain guys i know how you must feel!
AC === POS😁
The RV industry is on its back they don't care they just sell them
Mike will you shut up and put the pretty girl in front of the camera nobody wants to hear anything from you. Just kidding hahaha Merry Christmas
Following your channel is like suffering a colonoscopy every day of the week. Are you masochists by chance?
