This is REAL country music. Dave is one of my all time favorite guitarists - a real virtuoso. Gillian is an incredible songwriter and singer, and the two were meant to play together. Adding Amanda and Jason was a great touch to an already amazing song. Pop country sucks - this is what music is all about. Great performance!
You rarely if ever hear Gillian Welch's name mentioned by mainstream people when they talk about great female country artists, or just great country artists in general. That should tell you all you need to know about the state of music today. One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
@Ophelia I think it is in part her own choices though. She has let Dave's career take precedence and has not had a new album in years. Her last won a Grammy, and she got a lot of attention in independent music in the 2000s. No one in the Americana genre is going to have superstar status, but she would get the attention of Kacey Musgraves or Brandy Clark if she was more active.
Absolutely phenomenal! Dave Rawlings has a very unique approach to scales and modes, so nice to see Jason just fall right into it... Right there are 4 of my favorite musicians performing today. Thanx!
@@mjcrawfYep, took me a while but somewhere within the last third of 30yrs of playing I realized there aren't any wrong notes they are just just less interesting ones and ones you don't use well. Know the Root, 7 and 3rd as just the guide posts, a long with a few tricks. After that, scales and modes take care of themselves as long as you remember that you play music and not guitar.
Nope - Gillian and Dave are the stars! Love jason & Amanda - but man, Dave Rawlings is amazing playing that old, cheap, classic guitar! If you see Dave & Gillian, Gillian will occasionally try to play Dave's guitar. The result: It's not the guitar, it's Rawlings' talent!
so nice to see grey hair on a lady. been watching her since she first came out and it reminds me that we're all getting older but he she just gets better.
I didn't think this song could get any better, then I heard this version with that beautiful mournful fiddle tugging away at my heart. Just spectacular! Thank you.
I've always been in awe when watching David Rawlings seemingly paint himself into a corner when playing leads, but somehow coming out unscathed by it all. It's almost heroic to a guitar player, his sense of walking such a fine line...
Funny but I understand exactly what you’re talking about. It seems like his music/mind wander off somewhere else into another tune and then he falls right back into the melody so smoothly.
Just fabulous. In this world of throwaway stuff that just makes you switch off the system, this makes you sit straight up and pay attention. Beauty and grace, elegance and meaning, brought back to remind us what music was supposed to be about. And I'm not even North American! This has universal appeal.
Country is always alive, maybe the music media doesn't see it but it's there in someone's bedroom, barbecue's or anywhere people get together. Play some country tunes.
Im just a little obsessed with this song right now..listening to all recordings i find on youtube....it sticks with you.beautiful and just idk what makes this song to me so good..because it is?
It's wonderful to hear Amanda's violin, and how her voice seems to fit a perfect octave above Gillian Welch's. Four incredible musicians, playing an astounding song.
It's awfully tempting when collaborating like this to play a standard/classic song. I love it when musicians come together to play one of the artist's original songs. What a gem this is.
My God...I've never been quite sure what this song is about, but I always feel like Gillian is looking for a hug after this song....she is more beautiful than any beauty queen...this song destroys me....when I remember all the love I've lost cause I chose looks over love....I think that this song is about being picked over and I'm guilty...but her talent as a musician to me makes her as beautiful as any model.....honestly she doesn't need music either...lm hooked to her words
I recall a seeing a B&W picture of a late 50's era young beauty queen - on parade, in a convertible, waving to the spectators, Miss Ohio ribbon across her bathing suit- ya know...doing the job of being Miss Ohio back in the day when women were thrilled to do that kind of stuff. The pic mighta been on a Gillian t shirt or in the CD booklet or something. So, anyhow, late 50's Miss Ohio....with the winning comes the appearances, parties, fun, independence, travel... the running around. And that was when the right thing was to get a man and settle down to 50's era homemaker respectability. But alas, Miss Ohio just wants time to enjoy the win, her fame, opportunity. In my interpretation, she maybe does get in a little too deep with the fun. That line "I know all about it, you don't have to shout it" sounds like a response I mighta made at some point in my past when someone suggested I may have a little drinking problem or something.... So Momma, the aunties, the old folks are worried /not happy and keep harping on her to do right. Plenty of room for interpretation to modern day trials and tribulations. Anyhow....Thats my story and I'm sticking to it ! Gill and Dave are beautiful souls for sure and if I ever meet them I sure will want to give them a big hug. Thanks for posting grassflats2.
Gillians voice is so spare and natural sung with emotion conviction. The fancy noodling on the instruments never over powers her presence. Fortunately he sings harmony in a voice behind her
Yes, I got to see them twice in person. But, that is not enough. I look forward to seeing them post covid. Again! Praying for all the musicians that depend on live concerts for their income!!!!!! As a self employed photographer I know it's tough, but enjoying the gigs I do have right now.
I read somewhere that Jason sold his soul to the devil for 40 years with her. He claims he would have done it for 40 minutes with her. Sometimes you can actually have it all
I saw Amanda Shires at Eddie’s Attic about 3-4 years ago. What a sweet and gracious woman. We saw her on the balcony as we we were leaving and a drunk friend of mine told her how much I loved her husbands music and she just smiled and told us how much she appreciated us coming to her show. First class musician and female all the way.
I love how whenever you hear songs about Ohio, it just like perfectly encapsulates the depressed as fuck and still kicking, stuck here but trying the hardest we can vibe of living here. Like no one wants to be here but damn we’re just sticking it out and trying our best
What a shame it is in the selection of artists & songs that mainstream executives force through the radio. There isn’t a single song on the radio with substance like this. Willie Nelson once said “Three chords and the truth-that’s what a country song is”. If one were to use Willie’s criteria, it appears that radio hasn’t played country music in a very long time.
Well, Gillian and Dave are in a class of their own! Yes, it is in some genre...maybe Americana or some, I started to say Bluegrass but no. It is...Gillian and Dave. That is the genre...them.

In every genre, there are artists that bring their unique signature to their music and these four are part of that cadre of diverse voices that create something special when they perform.
It sucks he didnt mention Dave. Imagine being one of the best guitar players in the United States and nobody knows who you are or even your name. Conan should know better.
No other singer or band can cover this song and gillians songs in general.. this song was covered by miranda lambert also one my fave country singer but i dont like it. And my all time fave emmylou harris covers Orphan Girl but sad to say nothing compared to gillian
