It's like walking in from the dust and putting your bag of troubles down for a while. Someone pours you a drink and you hear a song that goes to your bones so deep that it makes you remember how we all carry only what we asked for. Man, this is darn fine music.
Some of the finest music produced. Gripping in all lyrical quality, subject matter and musical composition. A true American classic. A classic Americana song
A vocal blend that matches that of Simon and Garfunkel in their heyday, and instrumental harmony to match. They put so much into so little that their music could fill a heart or a stadium.
These two. So great. Gillian is one of the greatest singer/songwriters of her generation, and David Rawlings is the greatest acoustic guitar player of his.
THE greatest and most unique voicing guitar player I’ve ever seen in person, and in 69 years I’ve seen plenty of v good ones. The fn Truth. Dave Rawlings.
She has got to be one of the best songwriters coming out of the states right now. This song and 'everything is free' absolutely blow me away. She has that gift that Hank Williams had for making simple lyrics very deep and meaningful.
I first heard Miranda Lamberts version.. So of course I had to find the original. While Miranda does it justice.. the original is just jaw-droppingly perfect..
the way they slow down towards the end of the song is very tasteful. congratulations Dave and Gillian on your academy award for Ballad of Buster Scruggs! Essential American artists.
The performance is truly awesome, wish I had been there, I would like to give kudos to the BBC though. Set and lighting are great, camera work is great and most of all the audio is perfect. As balanced and clean sounding one would expect from a top studio but this is in a hall with a live audience.
Wow, wow, wowwawawa Sweet, cool, timely, great voices, great harmony, great accompaniment, saw them on PBS, outdoor concert San Francisco, gives, me goose bumps, I play and sing and do this song.........
Totally in love with these two. They are a couple too. What a duo. Unreal. And the average Joe never even gets to see or hear about artists like this. Criminal
Lucky enough to have seen them at Music Millennium. They stayed to talk personally with everyone and sign albums and such. Two of the warmest people ever. I'll never forget them and the time they took with fans.❤
my fav song they have right now has got to be throw me a rope. But what an absolute GEM of a tallent they are. This in my humble opinion some of the best music you will find anywhere right now. And i can,t wait for thier next cd. I bought one cd of thiers after hearin a song on the radio. Within a couple of days i had every cd they have made to date. Now thats gotta tell ya something!
They are the best duo around, and please note: they do not find the need to mess up the sound of their acoustic guitars by putting pickups in them. They play them through mics they way good acoustics deserve to be played.
I very much like this, but in my 75 years, I've learned to be less judgmental of people that have different tastes than me. I think people have the right to say they don't like it without being tromped on.
It's one thing to venture an opinion. For that you should be listened to with respect. The annoyance is others with not one ounce of humility proclaiming that their pompous opinion requires everyone else to fsll in line to be considered in good taste. The world will never suffer a shortage of such fools.
I remember reading an article in some magazine that if you blocked the hearing in the right ear you could hear the words better & if you blocked the left ear you could hear the musical pieces better -
A stunning piece of work. Why does RUclips not send me more of Gillian Welch alone, or she and David Rawlings together? I am blown away by the way their two voices harmonize, sometimes on the same note, or sometimes one octave below or above. It gives me goosebumps. I have never heard voices harmonize so well, at least in the modern era. This is musical perfection.
Damn Straight !! I've been listening to this for about a year. I've got Gillian's guitar part down now, easy enough... Now all I need is someone who looks and sings like her and plays lead like David and I'll have a great cover band , that er, won't need me... DAMN ! This plan needs more work.
I love this so much! I think both of these artists are quite talented and would not exist in this realm without one another. The harmonies are exquisite and the songwriting is incendiary. I grew up andD l
I love this song Gillian and David! I saw you live in CO once and it made my month. Just woke up signing this song this morning and was able to find you here on RUclips signing it. Thanks for being so awesome!
Really? It comes off that way to you Brooks? Well music's subjective as art, but to me it's pure in the way she captures how this Miss Ohio, contestant who won the title, is out there with her hair blowing in the wind with the top down, doing everything they told her not to lol. I love this song, it's funny and honest.
This song makes me feel nostalgic for something that never happened, in a place I have never been.
I came across a word for that once-- I think it is spelled 'saudade'. It's a Portuguese word.
Definition of Americana
Yeah man, I wasn't there too, and it's all cool. A magical unhappening yet still pregnant with a good potential.
❤
@@theredtomatoin English there’s a term called anemoia which means the same.
David Rawling's guitar work could not possibly be any more perfect in this performance.
That f-hole never fails to amaze with its sound, doesn't it?
Man can you imagine playing with the same person you’re whole life with an instrument in your hands. I love them
@@Firstthunder You mean like the Monroe Brothers or the Stanley Brothers? Whoops... those didn't work out, did they?
Most criminally underrecognized guitar player ever, dude is MIND BLOWING
*most if not all performances tbh
It's like walking in from the dust and putting your bag of troubles down for a while. Someone pours you a drink and you hear a song that goes to your bones so deep that it makes you remember how we all carry only what we asked for. Man, this is darn fine music.
The song was too short, so I played it three times.
Every Gillian Welch song is too short. The best songs always leave you wanting more.
Word
Me too
So glad someone else does this!!!
I wonder how anybody can dislike this.
"I wanna do right , but not right now"
Great Line
The best!
Some of the finest music produced. Gripping in all lyrical quality, subject matter and musical composition. A true American classic. A classic Americana song
yes indeed
wonderful lead solo by David Rawlings at the end, here!
''Wanna do right, but not right now.....'' The Human Condition?
St. Augustine: "Grant me chastity and continence, but not yet."
Yeah, what a great line. I'm very familiar with this attitude.
IB Student? Same, over here.
A vocal blend that matches that of Simon and Garfunkel in their heyday, and instrumental harmony to match. They put so much into so little that their music could fill a heart or a stadium.
+Kristy West Oh you are soo right.
Well put.
These two. So great. Gillian is one of the greatest singer/songwriters of her generation, and David Rawlings is the greatest acoustic guitar player of his.

The fn Truth. Dave Rawlings.
Monster guitar work by Rawlings, heart stopping voicing by Welch.
She has got to be one of the best songwriters coming out of the states right now. This song and 'everything is free' absolutely blow me away. She has that gift that Hank Williams had for making simple lyrics very deep and meaningful.
I wanna do right but not right now
100% PERFECTION!
Harmonies give me goose bumps!
Agreed. David's vocal range is astounding.
sublime ....... best cross country travel music in the history of sharps, flats, dotted lines.
crazy how much two instruments and voices can blend so well as one
This song is one of the most soulful I've ever heard. Top 5 all-time for me
They were made to play together. Their voices just melt together, sweet as honey.
The redeeming aspects of American culture: Vintage guitars and Gillian Welch.
dreamtimej she's a masterpiece
Thanks...I think.
I love this so much. what a skilled pair of miscreants
How two beings can find each other like this is beyond my fate.
It happens. Not often, and it rarely ever lasts long.
David and Gillian are a national treasure ......a real treat for the ears
Them sure are some heavenly notes bein strummed
I first heard Miranda Lamberts version.. So of course I had to find the original. While Miranda does it justice.. the original is just jaw-droppingly perfect..
Check out the version by Band of Heathens, its awesome too.
Don’t neglect the version by Sol Driven Train.
Then do yourself a favor and go down the rabbit hole of their fabulous music!
the way they slow down towards the end of the song is very tasteful. congratulations Dave and Gillian on your academy award for Ballad of Buster Scruggs! Essential American artists.
It's fucking sublime understatement , so soft gentle complex , and simply speaks straight to your ,my heart
This song is a gift free
"I wanna do right but not right now." Gawd!
Just fantastic -- can't get it out of my head. The way their voices blend -- so simple, so fundamental, so beautiful
This is the best version of this song i have heard
Simply beautiful.... Her singing, his playing.
I wanna hear this again and YES right now!!
The performance is truly awesome, wish I had been there, I would like to give kudos to the BBC though.
Set and lighting are great, camera work is great and most of all the audio is perfect. As balanced and clean sounding one would expect from a top studio but this is in a hall with a live audience.
My aural comfort food. I can be in the worst mood ever and get lifted by any version of this classic.
A thing of beauty.
I haven't been this in love with music in a long long time.
Once in a blue moon words fail me, and watching this is one of them, all I can say is THANK YOU , GILLIAN & DAVID. XXX.
These two are wonderful.
Wow, wow, wowwawawa
Sweet, cool, timely, great voices, great harmony, great accompaniment,

Says so much with so little words. Great, Great Song. One of the best. Performance is fantastic.
Rawlings playing freaking sublime.. That chromatic stuff is amazing
Totally in love with these two. They are a couple too. What a duo. Unreal. And the average Joe never even gets to see or hear about artists like this. Criminal
This song makes me want to write a long and epic novel about the American Dream...despite not actually being American...
Just preposterously good.
Makes me want to drive to Atlanta...
Lucky enough to have seen them at Music Millennium. They stayed to talk personally with everyone and sign albums and such. Two of the warmest people ever. I'll never forget them and the time they took with fans.❤
They are amazing. And this song is so simple and beautiful!

As they say across the pond in Britain, " Brilliant!"
I love the vision of Rust Belt America that this envokes.
finally got to see them perform live recently. was heartbreakingly beautiful
I saw her live last night with Dave. It was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life.
She is amazing!!! Dave Rawlings is to!!!
I have had this tune stuck in my head for the last 6 months not knowing how to find it since I didn't know the lyrics and now finally today I have!
Nothing finer than a lady who can sing the blues
Two ladies that can sing the blues?
That's not 'the blues'.
That song gives me goosebumps! Amazing talent! ❤
Great lyrics, voice and David's playing is simply sublime!
One of the songs of the century...in case we make it to the next one
holy fuck that is perfect...
I have lost track of how many times I have watched this GEM, and it gets better every time.
Oh how I love this song. Difficult to hold back the tears.
that is amazing
I will die a happy man when I am able to marry dear Gillian in the bosom of Dave Rawling''s guitar
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
Riveting performance! Pure peace & heart in her song. She is a direct- connector on the SUPER highway of FEELS!
A fine selection of Acoustic and Old Time Folk Songs played on Guitars, with Gillian Welch and some awesome flat-picking by maestro Dave Rawlings...
I'm hypnotized....lovely :-)
I very much like this, but in my 75 years, I've learned to be less judgmental of people that have different tastes than me. I think people have the right to say they don't like it without being tromped on.

Transfixed by this song, I've known a few Miss Ohio's in my time, this sums them up.
Fantastic, & deserve so much more recognition than they get, their talent is insane. ✌️
Dave Rawlings rocks in the most mellow sort of way.
The lead guitar in this is just God tier
Just fantastic. This is such a good song to just chill to.
I absolutely love these guys.
so much soul and expression in this music!!
I love this so much! I think both of these artists are quite talented and would not exist in this realm without one another. The harmonies are exquisite and the songwriting is incendiary. I grew up andD l
